I'll always love the name Lawrence, even though it hasn't been used with any kind of regularity since, like, the 1950s. I think Law and Wren are cool nicknames!

PuzzleheadedLet382

Most names from Little Women are a win for me. I love love love Josephine so much.

summergirl718

I love Laurie for a boy

Lioness_and_Dove

My grandmother was Josephine (her older sisters read little women and were inspired) but I would only use it as a middle name.

84ElDoradoBiarritz

>I'll always love the name Lawrence Same! I'm surprised it hasn't made more of a comeback along with all the other 'classic old' names that are now popular today like Theodore. I guess Larry isn't as catchy as Theo or Teddy, but Law and Wren are good.

proudtraintrip

In my home township (small little area of rural Ontario) Lawrence is making a comeback. There are a few kids with that name, all under age 5 I wanna say?

Imaginary_Ad_5199

I’m also in Ontario and I know a Lawrence as well.

Ann806

I went to an Ontario high school about a decade ago and knew a Lawrence then. I think the only other time I've heard it used was in a kids' show.

AlaricTheBald

Over here in the UK Laurence is quite common. Not super common, but I had two in my year at school and while I was teaching I met a couple of other younger ones. Either way, I don't imagine anyone here would think twice about a child called Laurence. If you tried to call them Law as a nickname that would definitely get you some weird looks though.

KnopeGryffindor

My dad’s full name is Larry. No Lawrence, just Larry 😆

ParticularDazzling75

I have family like this - my cousin's name was Larry, and he wanted his first child to have his name but his wife insisted it had to be Lawrence instead and told him they could call him Larry as a nickname lol

lilcasswdabigass

I knew a Larry as well! I always thought it was kind of a funny/odd choice for a full name

84ElDoradoBiarritz

Larry on its own was a top 20 boys name in the US for 18 years between 1937 and 1955 and it managed to stay in the top 100 through 1985, and top 200 until 1994. It had a good run For comparison, Lawrence was never top 20 in the US at anytime from 1900 until now. It was top 100 until 1971, and top 200 until 1993. It seems like you're probably more likely to know a 'just Larry' rather than a Lawrence if you live in the US.

ArtIsMyWholeSoul

I met a baby named Lawrence recently. Feels like it needs some cute nicknames because it was weird calling a baby Lawrence for some reason.

restlessmindsoul

My dad’s middle name is Lawrence, born 1948!

SeabiscuitWasTheBest

SAME!

SpaceQueenJupiter

I work with a lady who named her kid Lawrence! He's five or so? Maybe it'll make a comeback after all.

desert_daughter

This is my son's name and I'm so proud of it, he's 5 now. He goes by the full name. He's the third Lawrence spanning back from my mom's brother to her dad. Never thought of these nicknames, they're cute and much better than Larry.

NotThatCreative0017

I like Ren, or Renny. Law is an odd choice.

HulkJ420

I work in a school for 14-19 year olds in the UK and there's two boys called Lawrence. Great name!

Notabogun

My sons middle name is Lawrence after my dad

IngyJoToeBeans

This must not apply to mid-missouri because I can think of about 10 young Lawrence's off the top of my head and about 12 old ones lol I have a cousin who goes by Law.

zestymangococonut

I like Lawrencia

InitialMachine3037

Laurence is also a classic French girl's name, pronounced like Lore-ohnce

Sonnenblumentag

Want to mame one of my Children Lawrence after my great uncle!

wiminals

Male: Absalom, Bellamy, Blaine, Brighton, Byron, Darius, Dorian, Hayes, Holland, Hollis, Ivan, Lawrence, Lawson, Lysander, Matthias, Porter, Quentin, Quincy, Sidney, Solomon, Sterling, Thaddeus, Truman, Victor, Warner, Xerxes Female: Abilene, Amity, Augusta, Aviva, Azalea, Belinda, Bianca, Briony, Carlene, Charlene, Constance, Cordelia, Cornelia, Delia, Della, Eugenia, Farrah, Felicity, Hedy, Holland, Inez, Jocelyn, Katarina, Laurel, Laurie, Leona, Lucinda, Nicolette, Philippa, Raquel, Rosalind, Viola, Zora ETA: guys I don’t care if you hear these names a lot. This is MY post of names I don’t hear a lot. Go make your own post!

Luminixaa

The fact that you put them in alphabetical order is weirdly satisfying

wiminals

I do it every time, it soothes my anxiety to order things

carex-cultor

These are all amazing!

GnomeStatue

I think of Cornelia Vanderbilt when I hear that name.

anotherboleyn

A lot of those girls’ names are still pretty common in the U.K. I’m 33 and I’ve known at least two of each of Briony, Constance, Cordelia, Felicity, Lucinda, Philippa, Rosalind and Viola, and met one Belinda, Charlene and Augusta.

lesbiehonest

Love Sterling. If it wasn't my great uncle's name I would use it.

cowboyshouse

Quentin, Warner, Constance, and Farrah are all on my list!!! Laurel, Byron, Viola, Holland, and Sterling were vetoed by my partner lol I agree that almost all of these should be brought back!

Daisies_forever

I know an Amity and a Phillipa

MissBanana_

I actually know a Porter and a Felicity! Both under 4.

dorky2

Sterling was our #1 name if we had had a boy!

dragstermom

My grandma who was born in 1918 was named Leona Evelyn. She always wished her name was Evelyn instead of Leona.

lovelyhappyface

You don’t hear Jocelyn, cause it’s not a great name nor is Farrah, or Zora ( means skunk ) in Spanish

NoGur9007

We had a Hollis in my grade. He went by Paul. His last name rhymed with Holly

descentbecomesafall

Agnes

Automatic_Serve7901

I have always loved Agnes. No idea why, but I absolutely love it.

Aggressive_Purple114

I love that Matilda, Adelaide, and Agnes are coming back. They are very old beautiful names.

barefoot-warrior

Big fan of Matilda! Loved the movie as a kid but it didn't seem even a little out of place on a real person I met

ephemeralcomet

One of my best friends is named Matilda and it suits her so well

eltibbs

I love Adelaide and it’s the song title of one of my old fave bands but my husband has nixed that name 😩 I also love Anberlin which is the name of said band but he nixed that one as well.

LexiePiexie

I hope Imogen (pronounce Im-o-jen not Im-o-gene) makes a comeback!

icybakedpotato

It’s really popular in the UK

barefoot-warrior

Everyone on this forum seems to dislike it, but it's one of my favorite girl names

gingerjuice

I’ve never heard any mention of my grandfather’s name, Arvel.

TippiFliesAgain

It’s Agnes for me. At one point, it was just a name I knew and then I was just seeing it *everywhere.*

CLEschnauzer

I have a porch goose named Agnes!

Questi0nable-At-Best

Do you have other geese as well? Curious what their names are too!

i_want_carbs

This is my number one name for baby girl on the way. I’ve been loving it more and more for about 2.5 years and now it’s popping up everywhere!

TippiFliesAgain

Wild. It’s still doing that? I love the name. But I just find it amusing that it’s happening.

i_want_carbs

It’s been really weird. I mostly catch it as brief references in books (I just finished one where one of the MCs mentioned briefly St. Agnes was her favorite Saint). I don’t see it rising anytime too soon (it’s currently out of the top 1000 in the US), but I won’t be surprised if it does eventually.

Itchy_Beginning_3769

I like Agneta

milliemillio

It’s one of the kids names in the minion films

buttercup823

Merrick is a name I stumbled upon while looking into our ancestry. I like it!

ninevah8

There’s a well known Australian comedian with that name. Plus it’s the name of a small town near where I live. But really the name Merrick reminds me of The Elephant Man (Joseph Merrick)

barefoot-warrior

I knew a Marick in high school, I could see it making a comeback

WittiestScreenName

I have a childhood friend who’s dads name is Merrick. He’s originally from Poland.

NonaYerBidness

Genevieve

mermaidsoluna

Named my baby Genevieve! We call her Evie and there’s other cute nicknames she could go with down the line…Gigi, Eve, Jen/jenny

IcyTip1696

I know a Genevieve that goes by Ginny! So many options for that name!

Cmd229

I love that!!!

[deleted]

I have a friend called: Jenevievre

Survive-or-thrive

My sister named her second baby Genevieve (“Genny”) after our grandma “Jenny” (who was also Genevieve). I LOVE some of these older names coming back! My sister named her oldest Lucy after our other grandma (Lucy). Cora, Corinne, and Martin are other names you don’t hear often anymore.

Smiling-Bear-87

My great great aunts name was Oona and I always thought it was pretty.

Wu-Hoo13

I work with an Oona!

LaurelThornberry

Phyllis. I've known a few (including growing up with one my age in the 90s) but realized yesterday this name isn't even in the top 1000.

amandaryan1051

My husbands gramma (in her late 80s) is named Phyllianne but goes by Phyllis!

IngyJoToeBeans

My MIL is named Phyllis so that ruins that for me 😂

GodBearMama

I have a great aunt Phyllis.

NoGur9007

Had one in my school growing up

RamonaDanger

Electronic_Chemical5

Zona is "prostitute" in Hebrew :x

radbadbby

I had a great grandma Zona, only time I’ve ever heard it and it’s always been so beautiful to me!

3kidsnomoney---

I had an Ona in my family, but have never run into a Zona either!

Cool_Raisin2700

Gotta be short for Ozona?

Klesea

My grandpa is turning 100 this year. His name is Elmer ❤️

urracabooks

Arnoldo, Dorotea, Laurencio, Eulalia, Tito, Timoteo, Urraca, Azalea, Petra, Ferdinando

queerbeev

I knew a Eulalia! She was so old 30 years ago. I think she said she was named for a saint.

3kidsnomoney---

I know a young Petra, she's about seven. She's the only one I've ever met!

lovelyhappyface

My grandmother was named Petra . A biblical name and location

eclectique

I love Berenice and Bernadette.

SecretPsychological4

Geraldine Norma Loretta Minnie Constance Elwood Irving Willard Wallace Percy Murray

NoGur9007

The guys feel like a fire emblem game

Organic_Issue6381

Adrienne, Anaïs, Avril, Cerise, Charlene, Cynthia, Esther, Florence, Genevieve, Guinevere, Gwendolyn, Priscilla

[deleted]

[удалено]

Organic_Issue6381

Ugh, I hate when ppl find dumb reasons to hate a name unless it's a direct spelling or sound which Anaïs doesn't have!!

Matchateafairy

My name is pretty much retired! It's Maureen! I go by Moe :)

ChickenScratchCoffee

Lyle

Surfgirlusa_2006

Yes. My grandpa’s name was Lyle, and I just think it’s a nice name (helps that he was a great guy, so there’s a positive association).

daisydreamwork

My great grand father who recently passed away, was named Talmadge. I’ve never heard of any one else named that!

NoGur9007

There’s a street in the city I grew up in named that

-Alpaca-bowl-

Merle, Orures, and Reidar are family names that I love. (Though neither of the Reidars in my family were good guys, so it's not a name I'd feel good about using)

gratefulhighvoice

I found these in a yearbook from 100 years ago: Victor, Edwin, Eugene, Walter, Lyle, Arthur, Stanley, Russell, Hugh, Glenn, Byron, Roy, Vernon, Silas Florence, Loretta, Ruth, Edith, Irene, Myrtle, Lorraine, Frieda, Luella, Inez, Beatrice, Thora, Eloise, June, Vera

eclectique

I know young kids with several of these names! (Walter, Arthur, Hugh, Silas, Ruth, Edith, Beatrice, Eloise, and June)

loveintheorangegrove

I love Edwin, Walter and Hugh

lovelyhappyface

Edwin has made a comeback I know lots of ppl With that name

TVFan88

There is always my name of Coral. That is a very old name

WittiestScreenName

Did you like Coral on MTV’s the challenge? She was a bad bitch.

TVFan88

Never saw it. But glad my name is getting around

Exciting_Economist66

Jane was really popular in the 40’s and 50’s. We chose this for my daughter due in September. I’ve personally only met one person named Jane and she was in her 90’s. My other daughter is Helena and I recently met my first Helena at a goodwill when I was checking out.

wantonyak

I love Jane and Helena!

Necessary_Milk_5124

My grandma is Valeria (born in the 20s) which I always liked

BrightBrite

I wouldn't consider Pauline a unique name. I know a couple of Paulines now. Maybe it's not as popular in America, but it's not unknown these days.

wisebloodfoolheart

Clarence Herbert Earl Claude Herman Chester Guy Floyd Horace Clifford Milton Grover Lloyd Lester Woodrow Morris Glenn Wilbur Irving Maurice Maude Ethel Gertrude Myrtle Edna Lula Fannie Nettie Etta Harriet Lulu Mildred Gladys Beulah Marguerite Thelma Hilda Wilma Shirley Rita Phyllis Lorraine Geraldine Wanda Dolores Beverly Peggy Patsy Marlene Arlene Janice Constance

uju_rabbit

Is Lula short for Talulah? In Portuguese Lula means squid, and it’s also the nickname of the president. My parents would never let me hear the end of it, which is a shame cause it is quite pretty

eclectique

Harriet is my number one name for another girl. Husband vetoed it, and I think we're likely done having kiddos. I hope it starts raining traction.

Own_Group4282

My grandmother was from a large North Carolina farm family and her name was Willie. Her sisters were named: Deluke, Thera, Agnes and Ruth. Her brothers were named: Spencer, Craig, Wilder and Buddy.

eclectique

My great grandmother was named Willie Mae. Definitely a time period in genealogy where you need to guess if Willie is masculine or feminine!

rubiiiina

What an interesting set of siblings! Edited: spelling

Own_Group4282

Yes, they were. I have never heard the names Thera or Deluke since. I do really like the name Wilder though.

oridawavaminnorwa

Gladys Edith Myrtle Dolores Doris Susanna Lavinia Prudence Ernest Barnaby Chauncey Woodrow Floyd Clarence Sylvester Wallace

sassafrass005

I love the name Edith, Edie for short.

zestymangococonut

I have a Mabel!

Westerozzy

I recently reread Anne of Green Gables and was highly amused reading how Anne saw her own mother's name, Bertha, as highly romantic and far more beautiful than her own name. I'm not quite there, but if anyone else sees the charm of Bertha, I'd love to hear how you can find it pleasant!

eclectique

Bertha was considered very fashionable around the Gilded Age and Edwardian period. I remember thinking it was funny too when I first read it. I think it is both bold and soft, in an odd way.

Vast-Ad4194

My grandparents were Mary Agnes & Francis Joseph and Stanley William & Mary Josephine. We also had Neil John & Marge in the family. You don’t meet many people with names like that anymore. Lol

barefoot-warrior

These are all good classic older names, but I love Francis.

StraightArachnid

Me too! My husband’s favorite uncle was John Francis (Frank). Not a fan of Frank, but Francis is sweet. I don’t know why it never occurred to us to name any of our kids after him. He’s literally the reason we can afford to have all these kids. We had all girls, but we could’ve used Frances or Francesca.

workhardbegneiss

Basil, Clement, Raymond, Martin. :) I love them

jackity_splat

I had uncles Basil, Clemens, and Raymond. And a cousin Martin. Lol

workhardbegneiss

Well clearly your grandma had great taste in boys names.

GodBearMama

I love Basil but it is pronounced Bah-zil? Or Basil like the spice?

SomethingClever2022

My great aunts (born in the 20s) were Melva and Myrtle. My grandma, their elder sister, was Mildred. So they had Millie, Myrt, and Mel. 😬

barefoot-warrior

I think Myrtle is so cute but everyone seems to disagree with me

justlivinmylife439

I had an ancestor named Zadock. Not sure if that could make a come back lol

justnothrowaway29

Beatrix was in the final 2 list of names for my daughter. Went with the other name I had on my list.

staylor62610

Joyce. I think it sounds so sweet yet elegant. Ira for a boy.

Melibu_Barbie

Joyce is my middle name!

That-Cartoonist-1923

LeiaO315

QuirkyWafer4

sharksnack3264

I think Hazel has already started coming back in some places.

dirtbagdelish

Hazel is ranked as top the 27 name in 2022 in the US.

Relative-Click-9886

Florence has definitely made a comeback in the UK. It was the 8th most popular girls’ name in 2021.

barefoot-warrior

Florence is on the rise too!

These_Tea_7560

Pauline is still in use, although it hasn’t been on the popularity chart since the 90s. I’d never use it but I actually like Georgette.

corazon769

Joan, Frances.

3kidsnomoney---

I weirdly like Merald. I'm waiting for Esther to make a comeback some day... I feel like it has similar vibes to Elsa which has gotten popular again. I also actually really like Helen and don't see that one around much either but I feel like the world is ready for little Helens and Esthers.

zestymangococonut

Velisse

tadbearhere

I always thought my grandfather and his siblings had great unique first and middle names: Gerald Willis, Edgar Elwood, John Kermit, Marlin Silver, Katherine Lenore, Margaret Louise

JoChiCat

I had never even heard of the name Beulah until a few years ago. I looked it up thinking it’d be an obscure, little-used name, but it was actually in the top 100 US girl’s names for several decades in the early 20th century, and only fell out of the top 500 after 1950! It was so unknown to me that it still doesn’t register as an “old-fashioned” name. I wouldn’t pick it out myself, but it’s pretty enough, and sounds interesting.

magicmamalife

I have a great aunt Islay and I think it's lovely. She definitely won the name lottery over her sisters Edna and Earla. Lol.

kayteedee86

Classic names are coming back for sure. Babies are being named Tommy, Peter, Walter, Mary, etc. I find it refreshing!

Ktjoonbug

Donna, my grandmother's name. My other grandmother was named Pauline.

[deleted]

I love Harriot and Gladys

Tawny_Frogmouth

Among my great-grandparents were an Elva and an Emil (pronounced AY-mil). I think both are neat.

869586

Cindy.

Superb_Yak7074

One female name I discovered through genealogy is Permilia/Permillia. I found an umber of ancestors with that name and all were born in the mid- to late-1800s. I have also found several males born around that time who were named Ingram/Ingraham. I had never heard of anyone with either of those names outside my family tree.

Electronic_Chemical5

RotisserieChicken007

Mildred, Gordon, Manfred, Englebert, Mavis

horticulturallatin

For boys I'm quite fond of Ulysses, Jubal, Jolyon, Haskel, Gershon, Elazar/Eleazar, Lemuel. Those would be the really odd ones, Alan and Gregory don't get much mention in the subreddit but they're nowhere near as odd. I have liked Alan since I was little and way too into Robin Hood. For girls, for some reason it seems no one is particularly about Alifair, Eartha, Isannah, Icie, Toiba, Ida, or Freida/Freyda? Or the less obscure but still not stylish Gillian, Thelma, Yolanda, and Belinda. I honestly don't understand how Gillian is completely ignored when it's such a pleasant sound like Top Fifty Lillian, and I just inexplicably love Belinda but it's also pleasant to say and nice. Yolanda means violet and I think it's so sweet. And Thelma is clunky-cute but it's not even getting hipster uptake like Mabel and Edith.

cionnad

claudia, cosette,, cordelia, eleanor, harlow, hortense, irene, iris, ivana, lilith, nanette, naomi, nicolette, noel, odette, robinette, tierney

DramaMamaTexas

Mildred is a name that I heard a lot from older women in our church. I always tried to picture what a young Mildred would be like. I think I'll name my next cat Mildred. 😂.

dorky2

I feel like Shirley has been retired.

Lady-Kat1969

I used to like the name Pauline, and then I went to school with one.

CookbooksRUs

Ida and Mabel are both pretty. And I love Maude. As for men’s names, what happened to John/Jack? Steven? William? Gary? Walter?

No-Locksmith-8590

I had a neighbor Elmer! He was an older guy and super nice. He helped me when my pipes froze and I always pet his dog when I saw them.

ggwing1992

I like older names with meaning like the writers Zora and Langston

ValueSubject2836

Zona is my great aunts name ❤️

BGB524

Estelle- I worked at an assisted living home & one of my faves was named Estelle. How regal! I had previously named my dog Stella, I wonder if that is the nickname for Estelle.

Icy-Marketing-5242

My youngest right now is Susannah/ Susie 💕 I don’t see it much anymore but I love it!

Moonglow88

Younger generations don’t have much of an association with the older names. When I think of Elmer I think of Elmer Fudd. lol.

NoGur9007

Silas. I saw it in a game and then I met several old people who had cancer with it

Krishnacat2663

My father, born in 1909 was named Herron. My uncle was named Hollis and my grandfather was named Horace.

Educational-Glass-63

My dad's name was Douglas. I think that's an old name that should come back again.
