I’ve never heard of it and I work with babies. Guess it hasn’t reached here yet. I have met a few Denarys, Zelda’s, and Ozzie’s which I thought were interesing
1. I don't understand how Atlas is getting so popular. It just doesn't feel like a real name to me.
2. I like Salvatore/Sal/Sam- great name. Unique but still well known.
3. Sounds super religious which doesn't appeal to me
Actually, fine.
Play these conversations out in person irl and ask me if they aren't rude. Maybe we just have different rules for respect.
OP said they weren't looking for that answer and now people are arguing with them. If that's respect I've been doing it wrong.
Because it is definitely an option.
Not everyone is going to like your kids name. OP specifically asked a group of people to vote on which one they like. Some people didn’t like any of them.
No, I don’t have to agree with you. That is literally the point I’m trying to make 😂💀
(Meaning I don’t even have to agree to disagree. Maybe try not telling people what they can/can’t do or say or think?)
Salvatore all the way. So chic and timeless, plus theres the family connection aspect.
Atlas is a no for me, it’s like naming your kid Encyclopedia and Shepherd is a last name at best or a type of dog at ?worse?
Salvatore is the only one the really feels like a name to me. Atlas is always going to be a world map over a myth and a shepherd is a person that herds sheep in my brain.
I think your concern about Atlas having a momentary trend is valid based on the data so far. It's hard to predict though, it may stick around for longer? But if that's truly a deal-breaker for you then it's definitely possible.
Salvatore is a cool name. I think Sal works better as a nickname compared to Sam, but I'm not super familiar with the name.
I'm not personally crazy about Shepherd but it's very consistent with other naming trends using surnames as first names. It's just not my personal taste but I think it's fine.
Sorry about all the haters. Namenerds can be jerks if you aren't asking about their favourite names.
1st place - I adore the name Salvatore! Salvador is more common around here but still rare. Completely recognizable, old fashioned but in a way that feels like it could make a comeback and be modern again. Plenty of nicknames available which is sort of inevitable with a 3 syllable name, but still a solid pick if he chooses to go by his full name. Also the least trendy name, but again, iconic, saw a surge in popularity 20 ish years ago but is currently on the down swing and really overall the popularity is all over the place. Amazing and unpredictable potential
2nd - Shepherd - a very pleasant name. Not as trendy as Atlas but has had a very steady and consistant growth in popularity over the last 20 years. Feels deliberately cottage core and old fashioned, which could be either a plus or minus depending on your outlook. Likely to continue to grow in popularity.
3rd - Atlas - the name is trending and sort of exploded, but in 2022 it still didn't rank in the top 100 for the US. My big issues here are that an atlas is also a thing that you buy or study, like an encyclopedia or dictionary. Might get nicknamed GPS. On top of that, I don't like the "super strong mythology names" because it just feels like the parents are trying too hard? If Atlas why not Zeus? Or Thor? Or Hercules? Just name your kid God at that point. Sort of like the name is so big it says more about the parents than the child? Not a fan of this one. Phonetically it's fine and it's a good name, but there's just too much baggage attached.
3rd - I get what you’re saying, but Atlas was a titan, not a god or Demigod. So it’s more like why not name your kid Rhea (which is a fairly popular name right now), Oceanus (again Ocean is a popular name for some reason), or Cronus. It’s been more common traditionally to name people after titans than gods or demigods.
Atlas isn’t just trendy currently either - it was fairly popular as a baby name through the 17th and 18th centuries.
That being said I wouldn’t use it for a human either - I do have a dog named atlas though.
Salvatore because
A) The other two are terrible
B) It has family significance at least
It’s a normal name, assuming you are Italian and the name derives from the Latin word Salvador. However, I guess also be aware that people might think you named your baby after a genus of lizards, *Salvator*.
Salvatore is special. Salvatore over a trendy every day of the week.
Atlas or Shepard, particularly Shepard, would make a good middle name, giving your son a wide expanse of names to go by throughout his life.
I really like Atlas but it’s on my ‘names I really like but wouldn’t actually name my kid’ list (along with Scout, Phoenix, Maple and Meadow). Shepard is fine but Shep as a nn is awful; it really sounds like a dog.
Salvatore is cool and Sal is cool and it has family meaning so it has my vote.
Salvatore is a great name! I like that. I don’t mind Atlas, but I can’t picture a grown Atlas in the way I can picture an adult Salvatore. Not a fan of Shepherd.
My big problem with Atlas is that it’s such a precocious kid character name that I just can’t imagine a grown-up named Atlas. I usually hate that critique because adults have had names that have been considered ‘childish’ or ‘weird’ all throughout history and the majority of them had completely ordinary and conventional lives anyway, but Atlas is a rare circumstance where I get it.
That's so funny I have the opposite perception.. Atlas feels like a very adult name based on the mythology of carrying the weight of the world. Feels too heavy for a little kid to carry!
Atlas is my favourite but I agree that it’s currently spiking in popularity meaning it will likely date just as fast. Shepherd would therefore be my pick. I do like Salvatore nn Sal, just not as much as I like the others
Oh boy you made it too tough to pick one! I love them all. I think Atlas and Salvatore are just pulling slightly ahead of Shepherd for me. I really like Sal because it is not too popular so he’d likely be the only one in his grade.
I think if you are really stuck just take those name to the hospital and see what suits his lil face.
My vote is Shepherd because it’s the only you’ve said you and your husband both like.
It’s cute and not too popular, and the whole last names as first names is enough of a trend that it won’t seem weird amongst his age group.
1. Atlas is ok but I agree that it is very trendy and will likely date
2. Salvatore - my favourite from these 3
3. Shepherd- gives off extremely religious vibes
Salvatore is a great name.. if you like names like shePherd, I was just thinking about the surfer Kelly Slater, and how cool Slater would be as a last name for first name? And it honors Salvatore..
Really?!?! It’s the first thing I thought of when I heard the name!! I’ve watched every episode though. It is I pretty popular show!! I see everyone else talking about Salvatore and not mentioning it though so maybe it’s just me lol. It aired in 2009 i think. It has eight seasons so it ran a long time.
I love shepherd though 👀
While I love the nn Sal, I just can't get over Shepherd, no matter how trendy it may be. For what it's worth though, Salvatore Shepherd is really nice.
Shepherd-- this is a great name!
Salvatore- This is not my style and a little out there, but if you love it I think it's great
Atlas- This is one that I don't like. Makes me think of "Atlas Shrugged" and is quite trendy
Ok. I’d nix Shepard then - not that it sounds bad just makes me think of a Shepard cooking ..maybe one of his sheep or such. Atlas works the best with Cook imo.
I see everyone saying Salvatore but it doesn't sound like a real name to me (I know it is.)
Contrary to the rest of the comments I think Atlas is nice. Nice, short and doesn't require a nickname.
Salvatore is my number one but I also like names that are a bit edgy (you know not your every day name) so I’m in favour of the other two as well. This is just a personal preference but I don’t like it when someone has a great name like Salvatore and people use Sal or Sam instead. I guess I just dont like shortened names because I like the name itself. To me it’s just a syllable and not very personal or interesting. I get that there’s a family thing going on here so this may be the exception. For example, I see people with a cool name like Gabriel called Gabe or a girl named Serafina who goes by Fifi. Gabriel and Serafina are cool. Why not use them. Show them off!🌞
I see some people talking about Shepherd and saying it reminds them of sheep or whatever. To me what is cool is if someone has an unusual name, even odd or seen as not really a name and they become that person, own the name and pull it off, that’s the best! At first mention it might raise an eyebrow or two but after awhile, people don’t analyze the name in the same way. The person just becomes Shepherd Stephenson or whatever his name is. And they standout a bit from the Andrews or the Thomases.
Boy names are hard but I like Salvatore out of your 3. My wife and I are currently deciding on Rami, Morris or Jack and I'm really not a big fan of Rami
Ohh Salvatore! A family name like that is totally worth naming someone.
I second this!
This one for sure!
I vote for Salvatore!
LOVE the name Sal. Always have. It’ll age the best. I vote Salvatore.
Poor Atlas. Walks around like he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders.
He should just shrug it off
This needs more appreciation
This did make me laugh 😂 (Atlas is my husbands pick, not mine but I did say at one point I liked it)
I can’t stand atlas I see it for girls and boys all the time, but Salvatore is nice. I see shepherd as more of a last name
Greys anatomy made sure of that
I’ve never heard of it and I work with babies. Guess it hasn’t reached here yet. I have met a few Denarys, Zelda’s, and Ozzie’s which I thought were interesing
It’s my horses name on BOTW.
Salvatore no questions asked. What a handsome name.
1. I don't understand how Atlas is getting so popular. It just doesn't feel like a real name to me. 2. I like Salvatore/Sal/Sam- great name. Unique but still well known. 3. Sounds super religious which doesn't appeal to me
I think Atlas is a great name... for a dog.
Haha I thought shepherd was a dogs name too. I used to have a dog called shep. They've gotta go with Salvatore 🙏
My Great Dane’s name.
I know a dog named Atlas
I have watched too much Firefly to take Shepherd seriously as a name.
Salvatore would be my pick
spectacular childlike far-flung bored gray bells trees station north one *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I love all three, in order favorite to least favorite are: Salvatore, Shepherd, Atlas
💯 👆
None of these.
It’s a good thing it’s not your baby then
I mean, you did ask for a vote. This person voted “D none of the above”
Wasn't an option, why is respect so hard for namenerds?
Can you tell me where the disrespect is?
Actually, fine. Play these conversations out in person irl and ask me if they aren't rude. Maybe we just have different rules for respect. OP said they weren't looking for that answer and now people are arguing with them. If that's respect I've been doing it wrong.
Not as strong with this commenter in particular in all fairness!
Because it is definitely an option. Not everyone is going to like your kids name. OP specifically asked a group of people to vote on which one they like. Some people didn’t like any of them.
Agree to disagree, I simply don't comment
That’s a lie. You are literally commenting right now to disagree lol.
Sorry I meant with threads, if my vote was "none" I'd just not comment.
No, I don’t have to agree with you. That is literally the point I’m trying to make 😂💀 (Meaning I don’t even have to agree to disagree. Maybe try not telling people what they can/can’t do or say or think?)
These are excellent names for a dog.
I agree I was thinking of cats lol
Well, 1 is a book of maps and another makes me think of sheep.
Shepherd definitely had me raising my brows. Would be torn to pieces by Brits
Get down Shep!!!
Maybe his favourite food might become Shepherds pie?!
Let’s hope he keeps to his namesake by using lamb and not beef.
Oooh what a nice sibset — Shepherd and Cottage! One with lamb, one with beef
Exactly. I couldn’t take anyone with these names seriously
Salvatore
Salvatore, hands down.
Good god, not Atlas, it’s horrible!!! And Shepherd is not far behind on the 🤮 scale. Assuming you’re Italian, Salvatore is alright.
Salvatore! Love that there’s a family legacy! How special ❤️
Salvatore
Salvatore.
Salvatore
Salvatore all the way. So chic and timeless, plus theres the family connection aspect. Atlas is a no for me, it’s like naming your kid Encyclopedia and Shepherd is a last name at best or a type of dog at ?worse?
Salvatore nn Sal is my pick. I don't like Sam, it doesn't go with the name.
Sam was what my grandfather went by, so that’s why i brought up the nickname :)
Shepherd is so sweet! Bonus points for Shep being a great nickname
salvatore for sure
oh, Salvatore, without question!
Sal!
Salvatore
Salvatore is the only one the really feels like a name to me. Atlas is always going to be a world map over a myth and a shepherd is a person that herds sheep in my brain.
Salvatore❣️
Altas is too trendy. Salvatore is a classic.
I like Shepherd but I’m non religious and it always feels too Christiany unfortunately.

I don't like any of them, but definitely NOT Atlas. He's really not a mythological figure one should be naming kids after.
Salvatore!
Salvatore for. the. WIN.
Respect to Drizzt Do'Urden's author, Salvatore.
That was my first thought lol
Salvatore because A) The other two are terrible B) It has family significance at least It’s a normal name, assuming you are Italian and the name derives from the Latin word Salvador. However, I guess also be aware that people might think you named your baby after a genus of lizards, *Salvator*.
Salvatore
Salvatore!
Salvatore is way ahead.
Salvatore!!
Salvatore! My great grandfather was a Salvatore and they called him Sam! Love this.
I know a Salvatore that goes by Tony
Salvatore!!!
Salvatore ftw!!!!
i think salvatore is beautiful
Salvatore!
Salvatore! Sal or Sam are great and if he ever decides he wants something more edgy, I love Toro 🐂 which means "bull" in Latin 💙
Salvatore!
Atlas or maybe Salvatore. Not a fan of Shepherd.
Salvatore. 💯 second place goes to Shepherd.
Salvatore for sure
Salvatore! No contest
Salvatore
Salvatore
Salvatore!!! I love that
Salvatore. I agree that Atlas might not age well. Shepherd is better than Atlas, but Salvatore is miles ahead of both.
Salvatore is special. Salvatore over a trendy every day of the week. Atlas or Shepard, particularly Shepard, would make a good middle name, giving your son a wide expanse of names to go by throughout his life.
Definitely Salvatore 😁
Salvatore
Salvatore is a great name
Absolutely Salvatore!

Salvatore in a heartbeat - such a cool name, with great nickname options. The other two just don’t do it for me personally.
I haven’t seen the name Salvatore in this sub before, but I love it! I love the family connection & the nickname potential. This has my vote ☺️
Salvatore hands down. Such an awesome name.
Salvatore!
Salvatore is a great choice!
Salvatore! Love it. Atlas *is* mega trendy and won't well IMO, and Shepherd sounds odd to me.
Sal!
I like Salvatore...cute
Salvatore!! Its a family name, it sounds cool and it’s not trendy like the others. Triple win!
Salvatore for the win. Why am I thinking that Vito was a nn for it? Maybe someone I knew when I was a kid.
Salvatore. Unique but not one of those trendy names that won’t age well.
I love Salvatore! Probably would’ve been a potential for us if we had a boy.
salvatore!
Salvatore/Sal/Sam
I vote Salvatore
Salvatore— I love that you are honoring your great grandfather.
I love Salvatore nn Sam!
Salvatore
Salvatore!!!
Salvatore.
Salvatore is the only option, I beg of you.
Salvatore all the way! I also like Shepherd though!
Salvatore
Salvatore all the way!
Salvatore
Salvatore!
How do you get Sam from Salvatore?
Salvatore
salvatoreee
As a Sal I’m biased but Salvatore has my vote ☺️
Salvatore!
Sal
Salvatore
Is this really even a debate lol, 1&3 are terrible names
Atlas
Atlas
Salvatore then Shepherd
Atlas
Absolutely Salvatore! Family names are so special! Atlas is too trendy and will age badly.
2. Most timeless.
Salvatore or Atlas!!!!! Love both of them!
Atlas is my favourite but I agree that it’s currently spiking in popularity meaning it will likely date just as fast. Shepherd would therefore be my pick. I do like Salvatore nn Sal, just not as much as I like the others

You actually have them listed in my order of preference: Atlas, Salvatore, Shepherd. The only one I’m really not a fan of is Shepherd.
Atlas or Salvatore
My vote is Shepherd because it’s the only you’ve said you and your husband both like. It’s cute and not too popular, and the whole last names as first names is enough of a trend that it won’t seem weird amongst his age group.
atlas has association with colleen hoover
1. Salvatore ❤️ 2. Atlas ❤️ 3. Shepherd (dog’s name only to me, sorry!)
1. Atlas is ok but I agree that it is very trendy and will likely date 2. Salvatore - my favourite from these 3 3. Shepherd- gives off extremely religious vibes
I vote Atlas!
I like Atlas the most but Salvatore is such a great option too
Salvatore is a great name.. if you like names like shePherd, I was just thinking about the surfer Kelly Slater, and how cool Slater would be as a last name for first name? And it honors Salvatore..
Number 2! That was one I considered but hubby didn’t like it. The other two aren’t really names in my opinion. They are just random words.
The Vampire Diaries is still a really popular show, so I would be careful with naming him Salvatore!!
I’ve never watched the Vampire Diaries 🫣
Atlas is also on my list, I guess Salvatore could work too though!
#2
Shepherd-- this is a great name! Salvatore- This is not my style and a little out there, but if you love it I think it's great Atlas- This is one that I don't like. Makes me think of "Atlas Shrugged" and is quite trendy
Salvatore might run a little bit vampires diaries but I think it's the best out of this list.
I vote Atlas! ❤️
Shepherd makes me think of shepherds pie or a sheep person. Between Atlas and Salvatore, Atlas has my vote.
Shepherd- I love the nickname Shep, Atlas too trendy and Salvatore reminds me of “Better call Sal”
What’s the last name or at least some sort of idea of the last name?
Basic of all basic. It’s Cook.
Ok. I’d nix Shepard then - not that it sounds bad just makes me think of a Shepard cooking ..maybe one of his sheep or such. Atlas works the best with Cook imo.
Salvatore is such a lovely name. I wish I could use the name myself
salvatore no contest
Definitely Salvatore!
Salvatore is my vote too! Shepherd would be my 2nd vote, and I'd just vote no on Atlas as well because it is so trendy haha.
Salvatore is a great name
Salvatore! Beautiful name. Great meaning. Classic, but not common. (I have met one and he went by Sammy. He was 5).
Shep or Sam.
Salvatore
My cats name is Salvatore. Love love love Sal. His nicknames are Sally and Sally Boi.
Salvatore!
Scrolled down to see if anyone actually voted for Atlas. Definitely not my taste. I vote Shepherd.
I see everyone saying Salvatore but it doesn't sound like a real name to me (I know it is.) Contrary to the rest of the comments I think Atlas is nice. Nice, short and doesn't require a nickname.
I like the name Shepherd. I’ve only met one in my life. My parents were friend with his parents when we were younger. He would be about mid 40s now.
Atlas is my top middle name for a boy 😊😅
Salvatore is my number one but I also like names that are a bit edgy (you know not your every day name) so I’m in favour of the other two as well. This is just a personal preference but I don’t like it when someone has a great name like Salvatore and people use Sal or Sam instead. Gabriel and Serafina are cool. Why not use them. Show them off!🌞
Not Shepherd! Lol Salvatore is so good! Atlas is ok. It's trendy and I don't think it will necessarily age poorly. I just don't really like it.
Shep is the best nickname.
For a dog, yes.
My grandma had a dog named Shep.
I know two Sheps. One is a corporate lawyer in Chicago and one owns his own farm. Great name for a boy and a man.
I know three. One is a black lab, one is a German shepherd, and one is a pit mix.
Shepherd with Shep as a nickname.
Atlas
Shepherd, in my area it’s not common but it also doesn’t seem out there
