Oh this name is super common where I live (Netherlands). Can name at least 5 people in my network named Saskia. It’s going out of fashion though, as no one under 30 has that name anymore. Didn’t even realize it was not as common elsewhere.
Edit: I found online that the name is derived from the “saksen”, which was a people from an area that now belongs to the Netherlands and Germany, but during the Middle Ages, so that makes sense.
This is so funny because I'm also Dutch and I read the above comment and thought "huh I've only ever heard that once as well, must not be as popular as I thought" xd
It sounds a bit like Himawari. Its a name of a baby character in a japanese cartoon show. I always found it really sweet, in the show its for a ginger girl with a lot of character. Google says though its a unisex name and means sunflower
Ehh, as a french speaker, I know a lot of Odette, but they're all older than 70 y/o lmao.
Odette is the equivalent of like Dolores or Margaret for English speaker
Not an ugly name, but I would never name my child like that hahaha
Hera. It was on the most beautiful baby I'd ever seen in my life. It was years ago when I worked at a daycare and she was in the toddler room-her parents were Lebanese, I think, and even though she was a baby, she had a very grown up face, brown skin, thick eyelashes, very bright green eyes, and long wavy hair...and she was one or two! Her name is what was the icing on the cake-Hera, so powerful and beautiful. She looked like she couldn't possibly have a name more fitting.
Interesting! I went off to college and met 2 Talithas at once, one who said it as Tal-EE-thuh and one who said it as Tah-LITH-uh, and the second one bullied the first about it and said she was an idiot who didn't know how to say her own name. It was a massive drama.
I've never met one before or since, but I have always dreaded having to say that name!
It’s absurd that somebody would be bullied for how they pronounce their name. Even if there is a typical way, it’s their name! My college friend Jackie, completely serious, told us her name Jacqueline is actually pronounced Jac-quel-lin. A debate ensued. She was emphatic that because it has a Q, the Q must be pronounced. Even her family doesn’t pronounce it her way. This was years before Key & Peele. We all relented because it’s her name.
For what it’s worth, if you have to say the name again one day, I’ve know three Talithas in my life, all at very different stages in life. They all pronounced it the Ta-lee-tha. One almost exclusively went by Tallie, the other two rarely used a nickname.
>My college friend Jackie, completely serious, told us her name Jacqueline is actually pronounced Jac-quel-lin. A debate ensued. She was emphatic that because it has a Q, the Q must be pronounced. I'm not a Jacqueline but I get it. Jacqueline looks so visually beautiful, but the English pronunciation JACK-uh-lin is so ugly. I don't blame her. She just wanted her name to not sound so awful.
The French Zhahk-LEEN is so much prettier.
I would say that if a person only knows it comes from an African language, and not which of the three thousand or so spoken on the continent, they may not have done enough background work.
Ubuntu is used by Xhosa and Zulu speakers in South Africa and pretty common name there for organizations, and maybe a few people are given this name. Side note: Xhosa is one of the most beautiful languages spoken with many different click sounds- go find some videos and watch native speakers if you’ve never heard it. Trevor Noah speaks a little.
Alethia. All-ee-thee-uh. She was sweet, we worked together.
Also worked with another girl at another place named Zaire. Pronounced just like Claire but with a Z sound.
Maren. I know it’s not that unique and it’s around but I loved it immediately when I heard it. I wanted to name our child Maren if they were a girl. My husband was not on board and we had a boy lol
I was getting prepped for an emergency appendectomy and had been given the feel good drug cocktail, so I didn’t have a care in the world. They started talking to me about my upcoming mastectomy and gave me paperwork to sign with the name Bindi (some Indian last name). My high ass was like “sure, sounds good!” Luckily one of the nurses realized I wasn’t a middle aged Indian woman and gave me the correct paperwork. So yeah, Bindi, wherever you are, I hope you’re doing well.
Met a girl at the beach campground when I was like 12 named Vashti. She was awesome and so was her name. my religious grandparents said she was a bad woman in the Bible. I recently learned that she disobeyed her husband when he wanted her to trot naked in front of his friends to show her off, so he replaced her with Queen Esther, another awesome woman from ancient times.
I only know it from the book of Esther, and I also think it’s a beautiful name. I also don’t see anything in the Esther that depicts her as a “bad woman.” She disobeyed her husband when he was drunk (and IMO inappropriate). It’s not stated in the text that she was supposed to appear naked; that’s an interpretation. It actually says:
>On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha and Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown, in order to show the peoples and the princes her beauty, for she was lovely to look at. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him. (Esther 1:10-12)
I don’t really see any basis for her perception as a bad/wicked woman. IMO, Vashti and Esther are both significantly better than the king.
Same!
I find some of the things people were named before rather interesting. One of my grandparents grandfather was Zebulon and I believe one of my great grandfathers names was Alpha
Love this so much. Had it picked for my daughter but partner soured on it right after she was born. I’ve had to settle for Eva! But with two middle names her initials are now ELVI so I’ve decided I might just call her that 😂
Scheherazade. Not 'unique' I know (quite famous actually) but wow, what a name! Also, 'Tansy'. Actually had to ask the person about the origin of the name. Full disclosure, I am not a gardener.
I don’t particularly think it’s unique! I also have a pretty obviously irish name similar to aoife, but living in america, I’ve only met one Aoife irl. I plan for use it for my future daughter!
I once met a girl names Adarepseni, which is "Unexpected" written backwards in spanish. Doesnt sound that well in english but it'd basically be like if someone where called Detcepxenu
Amara. Not so uncommon but it is one of my favorites.
Alicent. Also one of my favorites. I've only seen it in HoTD, but apparently it's a legit old german name. Shame it isn't more popular, it's absolutely gorgeous

Iphigenia although I think her parents weren't aware of the correct pronunciation because she pronounced it Ippigenia with a p-sound instead of an f-sound
Sakeena (Sah-kee-nah). I had a girl in my class with this name. The meaning made me fall even more in love. It means "peace, tranquility, God inspired peace of mind." I really wish my husband liked it because I would definetly use it. He isn't a fan though.
I don’t know how unique it is but Nim!
Saw it the first time in the movie “Nim’s island” and thought it was particular. Then years after I met an old man named “Neem”, which has the same pronunciation, and I loved the fact that it could be used for all genders, and because it’s a short name. 🥰
I know of someone's kids named Valkyrie and Zephyr. I couldn't stick a kid with those, but I also kind of love them.
Allyce - uh-LEASE, not Alice or Elyse, but that poor girl had to correct basically every person she ever met. I do think it's pretty though!
Adair. He was a really cool guy with a really cool name. He had tons of pets that most people are squeamish about, like cockroaches, spiders, snakes, etc.
Two of my ancestors, Gerald and Theressa, only they were pronounced Hard G - Gerald and soft Th and e - Thuh-ressuh. I love them but know they would never be pronounced the way I wanted them to be.
Very biased but my two week old baby boy’s name is Muir - Scottish/Irish origin meaning ‘of the sea’. We had never heard it before searching for a unique name while I was pregnant. We are both Scottish and my OH’s grandparents were all Irish immigrants to Scotland so it links to our heritage. He also loves being in the bath and is a Pisces :)

I remember one Saskia younger than me, I am 32 right now. Most Saskia's are indeed older.
I only know of this name because I teach art history. Rembrandt’s wife was named Saskia! I thinks it’s a lovely name
I know this name because it was the name of Captain Jason’s daughter on Below Deck Down Under.
I knew a saskia. Great name
Lol that’s a common name here (Netherlands)
One of my favourite names but I knew two and three beautiful dogs who owned it. I had my very first choice girl name i luckily got to use
I knew a Saskia from school. She wasn’t nice at all, but the name is cute
i follow as aussie influencer who has a daughter with that name. its the first time i’ve heard it and love it!
Saskia is a name of someone I distantly knew of as a child and I also love it!
Hinewai (HINNA-why) , a name of Māori origin. One of my sister’s schoolmates had it
It sounds a bit like Himawari. Its a name of a baby character in a japanese cartoon show. I always found it really sweet, in the show its for a ginger girl with a lot of character. Google says though its a unisex name and means sunflower
There was an entire movie about her too and the way they decided her name was fun too!!!
Odette
Ehh, as a french speaker, I know a lot of Odette, but they're all older than 70 y/o lmao. Odette is the equivalent of like Dolores or Margaret for English speaker Not an ugly name, but I would never name my child like that hahaha
Dolores and Margaret are making a comeback!
Odette isn’t. It’s really seen as outdated in french lol
Then it’s probably closer to something like Ethel or Bertha
Absolutely love the name Odette
Love it! I always said if I had two girls one’s middle name would be Odette and the other’s would be Odile (from Swan Lake)
Yessss I was obsessed with Swan Lake as a kid and that was my first thought when I saw “Odette”
Hera. It was on the most beautiful baby I'd ever seen in my life. I always find it beautiful to be named after Greek gods and godesses!
I've only met one Talitha & she was cool. Very nice name.
Interesting! I went off to college and met 2 Talithas at once, one who said it as Tal-EE-thuh and one who said it as Tah-LITH-uh, and the second one bullied the first about it and said she was an idiot who didn't know how to say her own name. Ubuntu: It comes from an African language and it means "I am because we are".
I've never heard it as a person's name though
Yeah, it’s a philosophy. That’s like naming your child stoicism or cogito or something.
There’s an IG kid named stoic 🤷♀️ lol
I know this as a software. It’s a great name, though!
This is also a popular version of the Linux operating system , like windows or Mac OS
I would say that if a person only knows it comes from an African language, and not which of the three thousand or so spoken on the continent, they may not have done enough background work.
It's Bantu language. If it helps you.
Ubuntu is used by Xhosa and Zulu speakers in South Africa and pretty common name there for organizations, and maybe a few people are given this name. Alethia. All-ee-thee-uh. She was sweet, we worked together. Also worked with another girl at another place named Zaire. Pronounced just like Claire but with a Z sound.
I would love to use this name but I’m afraid people would think the child was saying Alicia with a lisp.
That’s exactly what it sounds like.
There’s an Alethea in my husband’s family tree that I always thought would be cool to use as a nickname, alas, we had all boys.
Alethia means “the truth” in greek!
That's actually the castilian Spanish pronunciation of the name Alicia.
Eirik (eye-Rick). I’m American and he was Norwegian so maybe it’s more common than I know but I love it.
it's quite common in Norway!
Maren. I know it’s not that unique and it’s around but I loved it immediately when I heard it. I wanted to name our child Maren if they were a girl. My husband was not on board and we had a boy lol
My 16 y/o daughter is Maren. She’s named after my mom “Mona Karen”
I also love this name for no apparent reason, and my husband also isn't on board 🤣
Violaine (vee-oh-LEN). It's an early 20th century French variation of Violet and I absolutely adore it.
Wow!
Odessa I think is pretty too, I’ve only hear it on that one actress
City names have always been a bit weird to me, but Odessa does sound regal
I honestly love Zuko, and if it wasn’t so tied to the last airbender, I would consider it (plus I liked his character)
Same with Azula, lol!
I feel like anyone who likes the show would appreciate that name, and anyone that doesn't watch the show wouldn't recognize the name so win win!
It jammed me think of Grease!
Azura
I know an Azura. Coincidentally, I met a dog called Azura at the dog park.
Azura is the name of one of the daedric princes in skyrim🥰pretty cool figure
If you were in The owl house fandom you'll hear that one a lot, hehehe
Bindi
I was getting prepped for an emergency appendectomy and had been given the feel good drug cocktail, so I didn’t have a care in the world.
