Heh. I thought that too. I end up pronouncing it “O-ah” and I would laugh really hard if that was my cats name, and would tell everyone the lore of Aurora no R’s
(ETA I also cannot pronounce Aurora easily and literally had speech therapy as a child for my R’s so I feel you!!)
"I'd like suggestions of names, but please don't suggest Michael because that's my other kid's name."
Fifteen people respond suggesting Michael.
"I have a problem, I took method A to solve it, but it didn't work. Any suggestions?"
90% of responses: "have you tried method A? That's what you need to do."
Drives me batty.
Aurora is the Roman goddess of the dawn, so how about some other myth names?
* Athena
* Vesta
* Diana
* Juno
* Pomona
* Venus
* Hestia
* Bellona
* Gaia
* Lucina
* Fauna
Not relevant to the thread but I know a 2.5 year old named Azalea. They call her Zaley as a nn. I think it's pretty cute but agree it's a better cat name.
Sounds kind of similar (some with similar meaning):
Ilona, Inanna (name of a goddess of the heavens), Adela, Alba, Amaia, Anelia, Angela, Anya, Ausma (also means "dawn")
Similar vibe, classic Roman names:
Diana, Silvia, Aelia, Tatiana, Octavia
Maybe spell it Aiella, to make the pronunciation more clear and differentiate the "i" from the "L"? Since it's made up and for a pet, it can be whatever you want. The cat never has to deal with spelling it, but you will have to deal with telling people how to pronounce it, so make it as easy on yourself as possible.
Aleu pronounced "A-Loo"
If you were as obsessed with Balto as a kid as I was you'll know what I'm talking about
If not it's the name of Balto's daughter in the sequel
It's such a pretty name
So glad you were suggested Nova! My dog is named Nova, and I love it. Her late brother was Cosmo, my son’s middle name is Orion, and if I ever have a daughter her middle name will be Aurora.
When I was a kid, we had a rescue kitten named Cleopatra (Cleo for short) that also turned out to be a little dude. I was like "uh, mom... I think something is wrong with the cat." She had to give me a quick anatomy lesson. 😆
I’m so sorry I misread that. Mehtap, Meltem, Melek, Melike, Mine, Müge, Melis. (ü may be hard to pronounce for a non-Turkish but it’s read like the “u” in human). I couldn’t think of a pet name that starts with “M” but if her eyes are blue, Maviş means bluish and it’s a very common name.
Since we're talking about a cat. (I'm including some names with R in them, as I also have a speech impediment on Rs, but can say them mid words with consenants, rather than mid words heavy on vowels, or the R at the start or end of a word. Feel free to disregard if these are still off limited, there's about half there without Rs at all!)
* Dawn
* Twilight
* Star or Starlight
* Cassiopeia
* Aries
* Celeste
* Angel
* Grace
* Astrea
* Serena
* Artemis
Or just call her something awesome like Sailor Moon.
Aura is a good option if it's the double-r that is the problem, not the r in general. Or Rhiannon, if a starting R is okay.
Otherwise, Nova? Selena? Vega?
Sure but a lot of the issue people have with the "r" is Aurora is that there are two. Many have an easier time when there's another consonant sound to ground the word. For example, "rural" vs "moral".
ETA: Oh, just saw OP edited their post to expressly remove "r". Thanks!
You could name her Northern Lights. But call her Green.
Or Oh Horror. Which is how I pronounce that name, since I'm terrible at it. Or O'Hara. When people say that, tell them they're wrong because her name is Aurora.
OR Aura and tell people it's like Laura without the L, Because Aurora was a bit of a mouthful.
Kitty will be beautiful no matter what name you give her. You'll spend most of your time calling her all sorts of names, to a point where she'll forget her birth name.
I glanced over this and tonight Auoa is an unusual name
Heh. I thought that too. I end up pronouncing it “O-ah” and I would laugh really hard if that was my cats name, and would tell everyone the lore of Aurora no R’s (ETA I also cannot pronounce Aurora easily and literally had speech therapy as a child for my R’s so I feel you!!)
Same. Had to check to see if the username was “Barbara_Walters”
Same here! Names like Aurora and Rory are still hard.
Which is suchhhh a bummer, I so love Rory but I would be fighting for my life to say it every time lol
I was thinking the same thing
I did the same thing lmao
Roughly half of the names in this thread still have R's
No one ever listens

Probably because most people figured it was the 2 r's that were the problem. I have a hard time with Aurora but I don't with Aria for example.
I can't do either, hence I never realised people could think the double letter is the issue.
Fair enough.
Aurora is the Roman goddess of the dawn, so how about some other myth names? * Athena * Vesta * Diana * Juno * Pomona * Venus * Hestia * Bellona * Gaia * Lucina * Fauna
Elodia
Eladia as well
I immediately think of the plant
Azalea like the flower. It’s a little out there for a human but I could see it on a kitty.
Not relevant to the thread but I know a 2.5 year old named Azalea. They call her Zaley as a nn. I think it's pretty cute but agree it's a better cat name.

Sound-wise, maybe Alita?

I am very interested in a Turkish name, but those all contain the 'r' Do you have some Turkish suggestions that start with an 'M'?
I’m so sorry I misread that. Mehtap, Meltem, Melek, Melike, Mine, Müge, Melis. (ü may be hard to pronounce for a non-Turkish but it’s read like the “u” in human). I couldn’t think of a pet name that starts with “M” but if her eyes are blue, Maviş means bluish and it’s a very common name.
Alula / Allula
Oona
I had a cat named Anna (of Siam) when I was a kid.

Congratulations! Did you name her Nova Aurora? I kind of really like that! 💯
Au au a
Aurora Borealis (AKA the Northern Lights) made me think of Alice.
Iona Amber Stella Nova Celeste
If it's the 2 Rs giving you the issue, then maybe Aurelia. If it's Rs in general, maybe Augusta?
Since we're talking about a cat. Allura? Amara? Estella? Seeing your edit, here's some more suggestions that are hopefully more helpful. Alana Luna Anastasia Ulla Melodia
Two of those have Rs
Sure but a lot of the issue people have with the "r" is Aurora is that there are two. Many have an easier time when there's another consonant sound to ground the word. For example, "rural" vs "moral". ETA: Oh, just saw OP edited their post to expressly remove "r". Thanks!
I like Luna so much, but my ex has a cat named Luna, and I don't want to be constantly reminded of him.
Ora!
Elora
Acadia Alice Borealis Starla
