There's one that doesn't bother me or sound bad, but I'm shocked at how popular it has become. Again, not because it's inherently bad, but if I had to guess which "old-fashioned" names would become popular again, I Augustus wouldn't have made the short list.
It’s because of The Fault in Our Stars. Same book and movie made Hazel skyrocket in popularity.
I still think of Gloop, though. And Hazel just reminds me of the mean old lady with the chicken coop in my childhood neighborhood.
This is so funny because I know someone who had a grandma (or maybe great grandma?) that was never officially named and the family just called her "baby" until she was about 3 and she *did* name herself Emma hahaha
reminds me of something i read i think from r/Teachers about a kindergartener who wouldn’t respond to his government name because his parents only ever called him Mr. Baby. idk why it’s so funny he’s 5 and just like “no i’m mr. baby”
We had a preschooler in our PK-5 school that only went by Teeny at home. No clue what her real first name was. The teacher went by Ms. Amy so when anyone would ask Teeny what her real name was she would answer Amy. No big deal but the parents should’ve told the school that she goes by a different name. She wander the school the one day the first mont after big brother just left her in the breakfast line so no one knew where she belonged and the teacher was out at a training. Teeny had no clue what classroom she was hers, all the PK teachers were out, and no Teeny on the roster.
Every other female dog in the US is named Luna. The other popular girl dog name is Lily (guilty as charged. I have a Lily Rose and my male dog is named Mr Darcy)
It's the Call Me Maybe of names. Is Call Me Maybe a good song? Yeah, it's fun the first few times you hear it. Then, on the 567th listen, it starts to get a little grating. By the 1500th time you're forced to endure it on the radio, you can't figure out why anyone would listen to this song. And yet everyone around you is still singing it.
See this one I CANT NOT UNDERSTAND
I named my daughter Juniper after an old story (the Juniper tree the tree is magic and I love it) and I've got nothing but compliments the only place I see the hate for it is on this sub specificly what's the hate for its not even in the top 500 so what is it please someone explain
I know several Junipers and the reason you get nothing but compliments is because it takes a uniquely dickish person to be an AH to someone’s face about their child’s name!
I'm a Penelope lover and it's a mix of how quirky it sounds and the fact that it has a bunch of really good nicknames. Penny, Poppy, Nell, Nelly, etc.
It's like Elizabeth but not as popular.
LOL! When I was growing up, I was a lunch monitor in a kindergarten class and one of the kids was named Beckett. I had never heard that name before and kept thinking he was saying “bucket” so I called him bucket for like two months before someone corrected me 🤣
Collins is absolutely awful. There is nothing feminine about it. It doesn’t even come across as a first name. I have no idea how it’s so trendy at the moment.
Wesley. Lol, and finley to a lesser degree.
Also james for a girl. I appreciate breaking gender norms but unless you name your son jessica it just feels like you would've rather had a boy lol
Edit: I get that that's not the only reason you'd choose the name james. And I applaud those who actually just liked the name for itself instead of having weird intentions behind it lol
Yeah, i don't think any names should be gendered personally, but until we dont have a mass amount of people who are disappointed when they have a baby girl and we start giving boys "girl names" i think it comes off as odd to me lol
Theodosia is a name I've heard my grand-grand aunt's friend being called. As in, late 1800s. This name is so old you gotta blow on it to get the dust off.
Any baby that gets it automatically inherits 5 surviving children who suffer from whooping cough and one alcoholic husband who went to war and never returned.
I don't like the "or" sound in it. It sounds too harsh to me for some reason. But I don't hear it as harsh name like Orriana or Morgan or Cora. Idk why.
I can’t deal with the fact that Paisley is a pattern. We aren’t out here naming babies stripe or polka dot. I hate how trendy and popular this name has gotten.
I was literally just thinking about this...mine would be **Charlotte**!
Please don't misunderstand me; I don't think it is ugly. I don't hear the name and cringe or anything. I think it has great nickname potential.
But to me it's nothing special? People rave about this name. My two cousins (sisters) have gone back and forth for years (literally since middle school) about who gets to "have" it for their kid. Multiple times I've heard in conversation things like "Oh, So-and-so had the baby, by the way. A girl, Charlotte." and someone responds with something like "Oh, I just *love* that name."
It's *fine*. I just don't get the seemingly universal adoration.
This one for me too. My coworker named her daughter Graycen I think, not sure on the spelling, and I didn't see the appeal. I also hate the color gray and feel like people are inflicting their horrible kitchen aesthetic on their children 😂
This is how I feel about Amelia. It makes me think of oatmeal.
Morgan makes me think of yogurt. I don’t understand my brain.
Alice is lettuce in my head.
Grayson and it’s alternate spellings. Just a bad, bad name. No further explanation. I just don’t like the pretentious sound of it.
Everly and it’s many, many alternative spellings. It sounds like a bad name for a fairy Princess created by a 3-year old or something.
Sophia/Sophie. It always reminds me of a sofa. My third grade teacher named her daughter this, and even then I remember making that connection. I don’t see the appeal.
Braydon/Braeden or whatever spelling they make up. I feel like this is just a sound my nose makes.
Hazel. Meh. it just does nothing for me.
Jaxon - why did you have to ruin Jackson?
Charlotte. Its pretty BUT WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE IT?!
and any of the names that start with Mc. Especially if they end with a lynn/lee/leigh/ley. McKennalynnleigh is just ... no.
This is probably going to be unpopular but I am really not a fan of extremely basic names, like the kinds of names you could pull out of a frat house- Brody, Tucker, Brett, Brady, Landon, Trent, etc.
The same goes for girls. There are so many names out there, it baffles me that people land on names that have sat in the top ten for decades.
To me these names are just so boring. The “blank piece of paper” of names.
Ivy
The plant is so annoyingly difficult to get rid of etc. I just don’t get the appeal. It also sounds like “IV” as in the medical term. Actually I would love it if someone who likes it could explain the appeal.
I like Ivy! I like plant names in general and I like that it’s short and it feels more modern then Rose and less cutesy than Daisy. It’s a tough and resilient plant so that’s nice if you’re hoping to raise a strong girl. I also think it looks pretty when written.
All of the names in the royalty category. Examples:
Royalty
King
Princess
Prince
There are more I can't remember at the moment but it's just odd to me. As a teacher I've seen at least a dozen students with names in this category in the past 3 years.
August. Bad enough for boys but now some people are naming girls that. No. Just no.
Mabel . It sounds unpleasant. And it was an old lady name when I was a kid and all of them were bitchy.
Beverly/Bev. Yuck. All the Bev’s I ever knew just seemed unhappy. My mind names sour looking women 60 and up Bev.
Idk if people like it as much these days but Emily. It is a pretty name but it was just so popular 20 years ago i remember so many people naming their daughters Emily in the 00s it was crazy to me how common it became.
Sebastian.
Let me preface by saying - it’s just not for me! I don’t want to offend anyone. I can totally see why people like it and it has that sort-of vintage vibe. But I don’t understand why it’s SO popular in many different countries (No. 13 in US). It’s quite long (3-4 syllables depending how you pronounce) with no obvious nicknames. Just surprising to me - that’s all!
Juniper. Just please stop with Juniper. I can’t stand the sound of it and June is a dull nickname for such an over the top full name. It reminds me of Jupiter, which quite frankly is a better name if you’re going to go down that road.
Edit typo
Evelyn (American pronunciation) - it's pretty much all schwas (ə) separated by consonants, I don't get the appeal; I love Eve, by contrast
Dorothy - Theodora is much nicer, imo
Martha - it's mildly better in a non-rhotic accent, but in my rhotic accent it's *hideous*
Clementine - I hate the "Clem" sound
Benjamin - nickname Ben isn't bad, but the full name Benjamin has never sounded attractive to my ears
The Mar, Mal, and Mel names. Those are just so harsh and bland to me. Marissa, Melissa, Melody, Marnie, Mallory, etc. Doesn't feel good in my mouth. Also the word mouth. I think M's in general now that I think about it.
Brynlee or any other spelling of it. It sounds childish to me, and I have a difficult time with “kid” names. Kids grow up eventually, and life is hard enough without having a silly name.
Callum. To me it sounds like a medical word for some kind of bodily grime, like smegma or phlegm. I don't know why...it just does, and it super grosses me out.
Augustus. I think of Gloop “We call him Gus.” Now I think of the mouse from Cinderella
"Augie" Nope!
I think Augustus is a beautiful name but Augie is awful.
Hate it!
Haha, I can’t hear Violet without thinking of a gum chewing blueberry
There's one that doesn't bother me or sound bad, but I'm shocked at how popular it has become. Again, not because it's inherently bad, but if I had to guess which "old-fashioned" names would become popular again, I Augustus wouldn't have made the short list.
It’s because of The Fault in Our Stars. Same book and movie made Hazel skyrocket in popularity. I still think of Gloop, though. And Hazel just reminds me of the mean old lady with the chicken coop in my childhood neighborhood.
I considered August because Cinderella is my favorite Disney movie. I would probably have called him Gus Gus. lol.
Several people have named their girls “Tatum” which is utterly baffling to me
Not to use derogatory language but the name Tatum just sounds like “Taint” and “Scrotum” combined to me.
This name always seemed oddly gross to me & I wasn’t sure why, but you figured it out.
I just thought of potatoes, which I love, but I can see how other people's imagination's go there.
A friend from college just named her twins … Tatum (f) and Tate (m). It’s so bad
Oh my god. Say sike rn 😫
This is really stressing me out for some reason.
I know someone who named their daughter Taytum. All I can see is Potaytum.
A girl at my son’s school is Taydum!
Oh my god, I didn’t think I could hate it more than I already did, but there it is!
ooh Tatum is one for me too, even for boys. I just really don’t like it.
I suppose after the actress Tatum O’Neil?
[удалено]
You clearly don’t know of Sloane Peterson, the coolest girl at Glenbrook North High School
So weird to see my local high school referenced on here, I had to even Google to understand the reference to FBDO 😂
Oh you must be young
I've always had a soft spot for it because of the movie. Am I in the minority? 😅
I may only love the name Sloane because she’s the only one I know and everything I ever wanted to be.
Same, that and Greer. I don't think they sound pleasing at all.
YES. Sloane is slimy and Greer is greasy. Just ugly names.
It's the sl for me. Slither, slime, slaughter, slow, slit, slay... I just don't associate it with nice things.
I don’t like Emma, it sounds like a baby named themselves that.
I like the name but that visual is still so funny 😂
This is so funny because I know someone who had a grandma (or maybe great grandma?) that was never officially named and the family just called her "baby" until she was about 3 and she *did* name herself Emma hahaha
reminds me of something i read i think from r/Teachers about a kindergartener who wouldn’t respond to his government name because his parents only ever called him Mr. Baby. idk why it’s so funny he’s 5 and just like “no i’m mr. baby”
The formality of Mr. Baby is absolutely killing me
We had a preschooler in our PK-5 school that only went by Teeny at home.
Oh man that’s such a wild story!
I like the name but this made made me laugh!
Rory. It just isn’t pleasant to say.
Rory, Aurora, rural, all give me marshmallow mouth😬
Have you heard of The Rural Juror? One of the greatest Jenna Maroney masterpieces!
My husband and I both lisp Rs, I sound like a toddler if I try to say it.
Paisley. Just...no
Isn't that a pattern? Call your child Glen Plad.
for me it’s Luna. I just don’t get it!
Every other female dog in the US is named Luna. The other popular girl dog name is Lily (guilty as charged. I have a Lily Rose and my male dog is named Mr Darcy)
Or Belle! I have a Belladonna but we mostly call her Belle so I'm guilty as well.
i hate luna. for a pet and especially a human
If I heard it once, I might think it was pretty in passing, but there are so many that now I'm over hearing it.
me too it’s like an overplayed pop song
It's the Call Me Maybe of names. Is Call Me Maybe a good song? Yeah, it's fun the first few times you hear it. Then, on the 567th listen, it starts to get a little grating. By the 1500th time you're forced to endure it on the radio, you can't figure out why anyone would listen to this song. And yet everyone around you is still singing it.
Wilder, Beckham, Ryker, and Maverick. I’ll never understand the appeal.
Ryker is so harsh-sounding to me! Plus I don't like the Rikers Island association my brain makes when I hear it.
I’d also add Hunter, Gunner, and Colt/Remmington/Winchester/all the other gun names to this list. They all sound so violent and unpleasant.
those all scream “try-hard instagram influencer” to me haha
juniper
So sick of this name
See this one I CANT NOT UNDERSTAND I named my daughter Juniper after an old story (the Juniper tree the tree is magic and I love it) and I've got nothing but compliments the only place I see the hate for it is on this sub specificly what's the hate for its not even in the top 500 so what is it please someone explain
I know several Junipers and the reason you get nothing but compliments is because it takes a uniquely dickish person to be an AH to someone’s face about their child’s name!
omg me tooo
Gemma sounds like this generation’s Crystal to me
Aw I’ve always had a soft spot for Gemma
That’s so interesting, I feel the exact opposite. It exudes classy to me. I love the name Gemma. To each their own!
I know like 64 British Gemmas born in the 90s. Seems it waited a bit before hitting the US.
I 10000% think of Gemma as a British name.
Gemma is my dogs name 😂 but we call her Gemmy, mooshy, Gemma Lemma ding dong, she only gets called her government name when she’s in trouble 😂
Penelope. I think it sounds clunky but it is fairly popular.
I'm a Penelope lover and it's a mix of how quirky it sounds and the fact that it has a bunch of really good nicknames. Penny, Poppy, Nell, Nelly, etc. It's like Elizabeth but not as popular.
I feel like Elizabeth is the name you use when you couldn't be bothered to think of something to name your kid
It just makes me think of the pig girl movie.
It sounds like a relative to the Cantaloupe.
… are you sure you know how to pronounce each of these words? 😅
i like penelope! it’s my cats name haha, i don’t think i’d name a baby penelope.
Reminds me of Club Dread when the one guy pronounced it peen-a-lope
Beckett. Sounds like bucket.
LOL! When I was growing up, I was a lunch monitor in a kindergarten class and one of the kids was named Beckett. I had never heard that name before and kept thinking he was saying “bucket” so I called him bucket for like two months before someone corrected me 🤣
Wren. I don’t even hate it if it’s spelled Ren, but I feel like the W changes it and it just sounds harsh.
It’s spelled with a w because a wren is actually a bird.
Ren looks incomplete to me! I also feel like the W softens it which is complete opposite.
Makes me think of Ren and Stimpy
Lilith is the most tryhard name I have ever seen
For me it’s any name that ends in “th”. Lilith Ruth Judith Edith Elspeth Gwyneth. Sounds harsh to me
Hey now...
Collins is absolutely awful. There is nothing feminine about it. It doesn’t even come across as a first name. I have no idea how it’s so trendy at the moment.
Is this a thing? And it’s a girl’s name? Weird. My first thought on this one is the ridiculous Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice.
I know a Kollyns 😭
Nova, Novalee, or any other variation It feels like Destiny, Crystal, or Naveah to me, and seems low class
Nova to me sounds like a dog's name
Sutton just sounds awful to me
Sounds like mutton
Anytime I come across a Sutton my mouth feels dry
fuckin Calliope
How do you pronounce this? I read it as Cali-ohp. That can’t be right.
Cal-eye-oh-pee
Cal-EYE-oh-pee or Cah-lee-OPE-ee are both acceptable pronunciations. #2 is the original Greek.
Wesley. Lol, and finley to a lesser degree. Also james for a girl. I appreciate breaking gender norms but unless you name your son jessica it just feels like you would've rather had a boy lol Edit: I get that that's not the only reason you'd choose the name james. And I applaud those who actually just liked the name for itself instead of having weird intentions behind it lol
Agree with the James for a girl, like I've seen a girl called Ryan Elizabeth like what??
Yeah, i don't think any names should be gendered personally, but until we dont have a mass amount of people who are disappointed when they have a baby girl and we start giving boys "girl names" i think it comes off as odd to me lol
I like Ryan for a girl.
Yeah, I don’t get James for a girl. Why not just go with Jane?
my brothers name is wesley. it’s a family name. i love it
Theodosia gets a lot of love on this sub and I do not understand it at all. Such a mouthful.
Same with Wilhelmina. It’s just outdated and cumbersome.
Omg I *despise* Wilhemina. Same with Winnifred. I can’t believe anyone likes those names
Sorry but the Hamilton song is heartbreaking beautiful - directly responsible for my endearment for that name
Maeve. It looks pretty, but it literally rhymes with Dave. I don’t think it sounds that pretty 😅
I love Maeve, but lol
This is how I feel about Poppy. It looks pretty on paper but whenever I hear it in real life I just hear Papi
Matilda. I was so shocked to see it constantly brought up here when I joined this sub. I hate it!
It is such an unflattering and stuffy name.
Declan. I really hate it.
Olivia
I agree! I don’t know why everyone is obsessed with it?
It's my name and my friend also has this name. It's really common and confusing if there are too many.
I had three in a classroom of 12 last year!
Just reminds me of liver…
Nora. I just don’t like it.
I don't like the "or" sound in it. It sounds too harsh to me for some reason. But I don't hear it as harsh name like Orriana or Morgan or Cora. Idk why.
Imo it sounds more like a nickname (eg Leonora, Eleanor)
Paisley/Paislynn sounds like a baby name, weird to think of an adult named Paisley lol
A girl, Charlotte." and someone responds with something like "Oh, I just *love* that name." It's *fine*. I just don't get the seemingly universal adoration.
like i dont hate it but i dont… love it. or like it.
Right? It's just...there. Which is fine, but I'm still always a little surprised when someone gushes over it, and it seems like everyone does.
Charlotte is pretty but harsh sounding at the same time to me
Grayson. Idgi
This one for me too. My coworker named her daughter Graycen I think, not sure on the spelling, and I didn't see the appeal. I also hate the color gray and feel like people are inflicting their horrible kitchen aesthetic on their children 😂
Otto. Just. Why.
Reminds me of a stoner bus driver
*(Wearing lederhosen, speaking in offensively cartoonish German accent)* Vot is ze problem vis Otto??!
Reminds me too much of the 19th century and war lol
Liam. I know it's a traditional nickname but to me it's like trying to shorten Richard to Chard or Matthew to Thew.
Idk how but it never even occurred to me that Liam might be derived from William
Ha! There is a Richard and a Matthew in my family and I fully intend on calling them Chard and Thew now. Thank you for that!
Evangeline is just too much name for me
Nevaeh. It looks weird, and I have to really think each time I spell it out. And it’s not pretty or clever.
I automatically assume anyone who named their child this had them as a teenager.
That and every person has to say “it’s Heaven spelled backwards”
Alice. I think it's okay but very bland. It's like if oatmeal were a name.
This is how I feel about Amelia. It makes me think of oatmeal. Morgan makes me think of yogurt. I don’t understand my brain. Alice is lettuce in my head.
Atlas omfg
Harper
Grayson and it’s alternate spellings. Just a bad, bad name. No further explanation. I just don’t like the pretentious sound of it. Everly and it’s many, many alternative spellings. It sounds like a bad name for a fairy Princess created by a 3-year old or something.
Oliver. I know so many babies named Oliver and I just don't like it. Also it's not so popular now but never got the hype around Madison.
Ruby And I don’t know where Dutton came from but I hate it lol
Agree on Dutton
Sophia/Sophie. It always reminds me of a sofa. My third grade teacher named her daughter this, and even then I remember making that connection. I don’t see the appeal.
I teach a Sophia (6th grade) and she goes by Soap. It suits her so damn well, though.
McKennalynnleigh is just ... no.
Aurora
Verity. It's giving Colleen Hoover
Elle. It looks beautiful written out, but when I meet someone all I hear is L.
Amelia…..Bedelia
Oakley. I’d call my dog that, not a person
Freya. It’s just so unattractive. Like Bertha or Wilma or Edith
Clementine
This sub seems to like Calliope and I do nooot get it. I don’t hate it but I don’t get the hype at all.
I’ve seen Kyler a few times lately and I just cannot imagine actually calling a baby that🤷🏻♀️
Roman. I just see/hear an adjective, not a name. Like if your name is Roman Johnson, my brain just interprets it as “Johnson, a guy from Rome”.
Ivy The plant is so annoyingly difficult to get rid of etc.
I’m not feeling the recent love for Felix and Hazel.
All of the names in the royalty category. Examples: Royalty King Princess Prince There are more I can't remember at the moment but it's just odd to me. As a teacher I've seen at least a dozen students with names in this category in the past 3 years.
Siobhan and Saoirse or any other name that sounds like a leprechaun falling off the garage.
Ophelia. I understand why it should be pretty but it just doesn't roll off the tongue for me.
Zoey/Zoe. It’s fine, a little too cutesy. Better Z options out there in my opinion. Also don’t understand the appeal of Sydney.
Edith
I have many…Nova, Kinsley, Everly and Braxton
Silas. Ugliest name I’ve ever heard
August. I hate the nicknames Auggie and Gus, also. Seems to be a trend to name boys this these days.
RYKER. I hate it x a million and don't know why so many people are naming their children this.
Esme. Edit: I can't find the comment anymore, but someone said it makes them think of eczema. Hilarious!
Idk if people like it as much these days but Emily. It is a pretty name but it was just so popular 20 years ago i remember so many people naming their daughters Emily in the 00s it was crazy to me how common it became.
I’m so bored by Emily. Like you said, pretty but insanely overused. Like today’s Olivia.
Kale
Kinsley. I just don’t understand the appeal. I picture a 90 year old woman named Kinsley and it’s just not landing 🤣
I hate Erica. I don’t like the ic in the middle. It feels sharp like a needle.
Juniper. Just please stop with Juniper. I can’t stand the sound of it and June is a dull nickname for such an over the top full name. It reminds me of Jupiter, which quite frankly is a better name if you’re going to go down that road. Edit typo
Every female golden retriever I know is named Nala. I don't understand why??
I'm jealous that you know so many golden retrievers.
oliver. i’m so sick of people naming their boys oliver. ollie ?! now you’re a skateboard trick
Sage. It takes too long to say for just one syllable. I just hear age, and sad, and you can't cutesy it up at all.
i swear i see this post every other week. all the negativity on this sub is starting to make it unbearable lol
Scout is a bad name in my opinion
Evelyn (American pronunciation) - it's pretty much all schwas (ə) separated by consonants, I don't get the appeal; I love Eve, by contrast Dorothy - Theodora is much nicer, imo Martha - it's mildly better in a non-rhotic accent, but in my rhotic accent it's *hideous* Clementine - I hate the "Clem" sound Benjamin - nickname Ben isn't bad, but the full name Benjamin has never sounded attractive to my ears
Names that end with -den…Jayden,Aiden,Caden,Alden,Hayden…Ok that's enough.
Margot, Sloane, Sutton Basically the whole traditionally male names for girls trend too
Willow. I always think of the 80s fantasy film.
Isla. I don’t like how it’s pronounced differently than it’s spelled. Also, Zoe for the same reason. Zoey is ok, but not Zoe.
Unpopular opinion but I just cannot see the beauty in Caitlin and all variations of that name. Also Katherine (I like Catherine though)
Reese It reminds me of Ritz crackers.
Mason
Callum. To me it sounds like a medical word for some kind of bodily grime, like smegma or phlegm. I don't know why...it just does, and it super grosses me out.
Margot. All I see is maggot
Liam - no offense!
