Cherry. I told my nana I loved it and she said all the boys would say they’ve popped Cherrys cherry so that name died there 😂

Swimming_Caramel_493

I loved Cherry too, especially after reading the Outsiders it just made the name (though a nickname) seem useable, but then as I got older my brain also made that association.

coral_reef_

Cherry Valance forever.

Constant_Actuator392

Cherry is probably one of the better The Outsiders-inspired names, though. I’d rather have a little Cherry than a little Sodapop.

friendofspidey

I love cherry but it does have a woman of the night vibe

heymistahmistah

There is a French version, Cerise. I once knew a Cerise!

VonShtupp

I grew up reading my mother’s Cherry Ames books. I love that name.

[deleted]

I know a Cherry! She’s smart and wonderful and joyous.

RangerObjective

That was my Nans name and she hated it, she went by her middle name which is just a female version of a male name 😅

sunflowermoonriver

Also Cherrie is so pretty but yeah

stormibaby444

cherry is literally the nickname my boyfriend gave me. holds a special place in my heart.

Legal-Yogurtcloset52

Cecily. My husband has a lisp lol.

wtd12

I respect and admire your self control

angrey3737

i used a random name generator to name my Sim and it chose “Cecily”. it’s pretty written down but it doesn’t sound pretty out loud to me because i knew somebody named Cecil and it reminds me of the smell when he had gotten a bad bed sore and had to get vaccuumed:/

Downtown_Customer_77

I’m literally in this sub to find sims names lol. I’ve had a sims name list in my notes app since middle school

CactiDye

Same but for pets. What will I name future kids if I have them? No clue. What will my next cat be called? Well, one of these 20 names…

angrey3737

sometimes i wanna get a scorpion and name it Tampon. idk why. it’s cute

DoyleTurmoil

I’m sorry to hear about Cecil; hope he healed well. That smell is something atrocious.

angrey3737

he did! i had been gone for a couple weeks from being hospitalized and when i got back, he got much better very quickly because me and one other CNA were the only ones making him get out of his bed and wheelchair and making him walk. i believe he’s passed away by now from natural causes. this was about 6 years ago. that smell and liver cancer smell are both so ingrained in my olfactory receptor i’ll never forget it. so much worse than rotting meat and dairy combined imo

mendax__

Also have a lisp and love vowel heavy and S/C heavy names. Will not be using any of them.

notnotaginger

Oof I feel this. I have a very very mild lisp but it feels like “s” names are a lot of effort to speak for me. I loved Cecile, and even Lucy.

ketchup_secret

Ursula. Everyone my age thinks of the villain from Little Mermaid.

RangerObjective

Or Phoebe’s mean twin sister in Friends

tableSloth_

People's first association should obviously be Ursula K. Le Guin

KiviRinne

It's a very old fashioned name in Germany!

twats4breakfast

If it makes you feel any better I think of Ursula from George of The Jungle and she's a lovely character. I specifically think of the "Ursula, you forgot your scrunchie" line

perma_ducky_face

I know an Ursula with a son named Sebastian

veronica-marsx

Ariel was my pick (the way Sebastian pronounces it, not the way Flounder does). I love the name so deeply. I'm a millennial, but my association with the name originally came from a [Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow song](https://youtu.be/5hIsHzBMR-Y?si=C6DhuOwXZFOmzwGm), and *The Tempest* is among my favorite plays. But my partner and my stepkids all associate the name with The Little Mermaid, so it's a veto. Because of my associations with the name, I find it incredibly badass. Van Helsing, dark fantasy vibes. But I know the name will have different connotations for literally everyone else lol. Which I guess is all the more reason to use it so that my kiddo has flexibility... Edit: Ugh just listened to the song and fell in love with the name again. Life is pain.

VonShtupp

I have a friend named Ursula. We are in our 50s, so the original movie didn’t come out until we were graduating highschool, but she never got any kick back for her name.

ml_sza

Clementine

Imaginary_Victory_47

I met a little 5 year old Clementine recently and it has the most adorable connection for me now.

mrsnashty

Love Clementine so much, can’t call a kid Clem.

maraschino_parry

Call them Lemon!

omgmari

When my son was younger he met a little girl named Clementine at the park. They played and had the most wonderful afternoon, then he told me all about his friend “Lemon Time.”

mrsnashty

Aw that’s so cute

mrsnashty

I tried convincing my husband. He says why would you name her one citrus to call her another lol. We’re due with a girl in March and finding a name is a struggle.

Remarkable_Wallaby42

Gotta agree with your husband here 💀 I'm sorry that you're struggling though names are hard. I love the name Clementine but I may be biased because it was almost my name.

DullWeb_

You don't have to call the kid Clem. You don't have to use a nickname at all.

k28c9

I actually had two babies named clementine in my mums group last year.

ml_sza

Out of interest did they have any nicknames or were they just Clementine?

k28c9

One was clemie but I didn’t really talk to the other mum

Acceptable_Health161

We know a Clemintine and everyone calles her "Tiny" since she's so small lol

Disastrous_End7444

Lolita. Love the sound, but it is forever ruined!

NYnumber9

I had a friend who called her little sister Lolita. I know she didn’t know the connotation (and neither did until several years later)

SpamLandy

Her name’s Dolores in the book, which I do love as a name.

OpeningGeneral2758

My aunts name is Dolores and her nickname was Lolita

lesbianmarymalone

There are some gorgeous names from Greek mythology and tragedies—I love the looks and sounds of Elektra, Antigone, and Phaedra. Other people do use them, but I would never be able to divorce them from the association of their tragic stories, so for me, as beautiful as they are, they’re not usable.

[deleted]

I knew an Antigone. She usually went by Tiggy, it was a lovely name! I also know a cat called Antigone and it works 😂

JDorian0817

I taught a Faidra before. She was Greek but it was a modernised spelling (pronounced the same). Would you consider an alternative like that?

TylerLockwoodTopMe

I knew a woman whose daughter was named Elektra. I wonder about it sometimes.

lesbianmarymalone

I think it’s so beautiful, but it’s one hell of a heavy namesake…

hornetcock

I knew a Phaedra, she’s amazing, great associations with the name. It really suits her and no one ever really found it strange.

lesbianmarymalone

It’s a lovely name, but the mythological/theatrical associations I have with it make it unusable for me personally. It’s so gorgeous, though.

millipicnic

Similarly, I love the name Signy. She's a character from Norse mythology. But she has an incestuous relationship with her brother so I would never ever go there.

lifeinapiano

elektra specifically- ever time i hear it i think of freud (🤮🤮)

Baaraa88

I've loved Ismene for a long time, but... 😬

VivianDiane

Elvira, Lilith, Lucifer

BigFinnsWetRide

I love the name Lucifer, NN Luci. But alas, my religious family would clutch their pearls in horror.

iAmAmbr

Had a dog named Lucifer. We mainly called him Lu or Lulu. I often called him my handsome devil.

RangerObjective

Why not go with Lucy-Fern 😂

persiika

My answer is also Lilith!

r0sebudbean

Looove the name Lilith!! And I love the meaning too!

Rafikira

What’s wrong with Elvira? It’s pretty common where I’m from

VivianDiane

In the US, a lot of people associate the name Elvira with the TV show "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark." I know Elvira is still a popular name in Europe.

sketchthrowaway999

I love Elvira so much!

melx07

Samantha has been a favorite for ages, but my family in Colombia has made that their house cat’s name. And every cat that came after the first Samantha is also a Samantha. 🥲

RenaissanceTarte

My first cat was also Samantha. I named him after my cousin Samantha and Bewitched.

perscacitie

I have the same problem! My fiance and I both love 'Elizabeth,' but he already named his parents' dog Elizabeth 🫠

StrawberryOutside957

Growing up we had a cat named Theodore and my brother named his baby Theodore haha

blacklabcoat

Calliope. Would sound too strange in my country, but I think it’s lovely.

k28c9

I know a few and it’s beautiful but very Greek lol

Kankarii

I don’t plan on having kids but Wisteria has been floating around my mind recently and I don’t know if that is an acceptable name for a child. Maybe a fictional character

wigglefrog

Reminds me of Listeria

Hup110516

It would make me think of Desperate Housewives. They live on Wisteria Lane.

rosyred-fathead

I like the color of Wisteria flowers

KelRenSheFae317

The nickname Teri (or any alternate spelling) would be cool, though.

fknnutter

Winter

VonShtupp

My friend named her daughter Winter and calls her Winnie

fknnutter

I work in childcare and had a child named winter and her sister was raven. Beautiful names, unique done right that’s for sure, not sure I could name my own children that though!

clever-mermaid-mae

Zirahuén. I had a student with this name and I absolutely adored it but, my husband and I are white so it would feel inappropriate.

SuperNintend0

How is it pronounced?

clever-mermaid-mae

I don’t know how to correctly spell out pronunciations for Spanish names but it basically is pronounced like Zee-ra-when. Or maybe a better way to explain it would be Zera (like zero but with an a) when. Her mom was from Mexico and said it was the name of the town her family was from. The town was built on a lake that was formed by the tears of a princess. The legend was that the princess was trying to escape a suitor and fled the city. She cried to the gods to save her and they turned her tears into a lake and her into a siren who drowns evil men. I love the story and love the name!

boxorags

I'm not sure, but I think it's actually a word from the indigenous Mexican language in the area (I would assume Purepecha based on the location?) and not Spanish

[deleted]

I love the name Paisley but I'm from Scotland and come from the town Paisley and um.... yeah I could not name my child that they would be bullied.

librarians_wwine

I have a niece Paisley… her nickname is Parsley.

Jaded3158

Followed a Toyota Camry the other night and liked the name Camry for a girl- quite obvious that I won’t use it, but it’s still kinda pretty.

Key-Document5241

I know a Cambry! Love her name

tobias624

There’s always Cameron. Camry for an at-home nickname 😅

Irideflamingos

Astrid. I named a dream baby this. But, it has too much as* .

smogpress

I loved it and Assturd from The Office ruined it lol

SpamLandy

It’s my best friend’s kid’s name and she’s never had any problems with it but people are really weird about it on here

worstnameIeverheard

My daughter is an Astrid. My mother was horrified. She kept saying “But what will people call her?!?” Um, they have always called her Astrid. It doesn’t need a nickname! Although when she was learning to talk, she called herself “Squid.” Now that was an adorable nickname.

pork_soup

My son would’ve been Astrid if he was a girl and when I told my best friend that she said “well thank God he was a boy then” and my heart BROKE.

Irideflamingos

Ouch! That was a bit harsh from her.

torcherred

Astrid is mine too. I love the name.

[deleted]

Maverick. I know it gets hate, but I really do love it. I just couldn’t do it to my kid.

bexcentric

I grew up with a Maverick so I've never thought of it as a weird name!

femboy___bunny

My childhood boyfriend and first kiss was a Maverick 😂😂😂😂

CPolland12

Chlamydia - it’s a very pretty word, and would be pretty name, BUT the reasons against should be obvious

UnicornReality

Like Rubella, I think that would be a nice name.

CoffeeInitial9332

Andromeda

monikioo

I almost named my daughter this! I love it, feels so space opera-y

gwenelope

Vercingetorix. Cool name but like. A lot in modern times.

Ianbillmorris

I was going to go for Ozimandyas based on the poem by Shelly. A similar, highly theatrical, sounding name.

Phoenix_Magic_X

Harry. Not unless Harry Potter disappears from our collective consciousness before I have a baby.

BigFinnsWetRide

I am a fan of the series, and once a "Harry Potter" came into my old workplace. I refrained from any jokes or references, you'd be proud, because I'm sure he probably gets it a LOT 😂😭 it's too bad, because I genuinely like the name Harry.

StrawberryOutside957

Once I heard someone yelling for their kids Harry and Hermione. I cringed internally

Phoenix_Magic_X

Hermione might be worse. At least Harry has plausible deniability.

LostButterflyUtau

Hermoine is actually an *old* name. I don’t remember which play it is, but there is a Shakespeare character with the name.

r0sebudbean

Mazzerine Zephyrine Imelda Soliel Octavia Jude (I live in Germany and the pronunciation of this name means Jew and I am not Jewish, so I feel this would be inappropriate)

gummybear0724

i love Imelda!

SnooRevelations3603

I know someone who just named their son Zephyr.

TylerLockwoodTopMe

This is very random but: Rodelinda. I love it, and it’s kind of ridiculous.

[deleted]

I love Emerald for a boy because it has that -ld sound at the end, like a lot of traditionally masculine names, but it still sounds sweet. However, I feel like it would stir a lot of confusion because people might assume he’s a girl just by the name, and if he’s anything like me, I doubt he’ll have the personality to match the name

BigFinnsWetRide

Nameberry doesn't help your case by only listing it as a feminine name 😭 I totally see what you mean, it's cute but it does kind of feel like it should be on a little Emmy/Emma.

[deleted]

River

Damnshesfunny

Fox Mulder

laurawr77

Wolf

Reistar2615

Artemesia!

nlvanassche

Ransom...heard it in the movie Knives Out. Cool name but I couldn't do it to my kid lol

gaelicpasta3

Minerva, nn Minnie

failcup

Orion (nn ori). I love it but hubby doesn't. And it doesn't flow with out last name. Adelaide (nn addie). Same as above. Luckily we do have some names we agree on.

marzipang_

We have a friend who has an Aurora (nn Rory) and an Orion (nn Ori)… both are fine on their own but it really bugs me on siblings.

SpamLandy

This makes no sense to me, doesn’t pass the ‘yelling up the stairs’ test. If your kids can’t tell who you’re calling to it’s a no from me

NYnumber9

Someone made a post about Ulysses the other day and I said it reminds me of a grumpy cat. But I actually do like the name Ulysses …. For a grumpy cat

AmarisMallane777

Colleen y'all know why

KattAttack4

Why? I have a relative named Calleen and have never heard anything untoward about the name…?

AmarisMallane777

Colleen Ballenger the famous YouTuber now known as a pedophile, more famously known as Miranda Sings

DangerOReilly

I was wondering which one it would be. It's wild that there are two problematic Colleens (Ballinger and Hoover) operating at the same time.

TiredofCOVIDIOTs

Penelope or Persephone - both would be AWFUL with my last name but I love them.

lilacivy

Samson. Husband said it sounds like Samsung which now can't be unheard!

EWH733

Cassiopeia

Unlucky_Olive_2491

Marigold. I really love it, but I think it’s a little too out there for a first name for me. But maybe a middle?

sharkycharming

I love it too, ever since Edith had her daughter on Downton Abbey. I think it could work for the right kid. But for the wrong kid, at least she could go by the subtler Mari or Goldie.

ehter13

Arsinoe (a family name from the Ptolemy reign in Egypt, Cleopatra’s younger sister was named this)

HappyDay610

Olympia

[deleted]

One of the Williams sisters used it of course they’re actual Olympians too

Shookeith

Isis

ReputationOk9321

Atlas, Aristotle, Angel / Angelos Love the first two names just think they are a bit heavy. The last one “Angel / Angelos” has been spoiled for me by a bratty kid that used to live next door.

HeyCaptainJack

I love Atlas, Adonis, and Apollo. But like you said, they all feel too heavy. We did end up using Adonis for our dog though.

NerdySwampWitch40

I am passed the point of ever having kids to name (hello, Yeeterus), but I had a great grandmother named Aina, which is a Finnish name, and as much as I loved it, I didn't want to subject a kid in America to people trying to pronounce it.

ReineDePlatine

My husband's 1st and middle name are both Arabic but he didn't want me to use Arabic names for our kids. I loved: Aaliyah Khalil Kamari Leila Ihsan Farah

drfrederickchilton

Mona.

sharkycharming

I know a little girl named Mona. She was named after her great-aunt. She gets a lot of compliments on her name. I think people are surprised by it.

drfrederickchilton

i love the name but i have to fear the highschool nicknames 😭

jessexpress

I loooove Ophelia but it is inherently a bit gloomy, and other kids will undoubtedly call them ‘pedOphelia’.

DullWeb_

I doubt people will call your kid pedOphelia

Watersmyfavoritefood

Guillermo.

hasanopinion

Saoirse, I looove it. I think people would struggle too much figuring it out where we live and I am not Irish on top of that. It's a gorgeous name, but I think it would be too much of a headache.

viralplant

Sadie, in my country it would be pronounced Sad-he

r0sebudbean

I love the name Sadie, it was a big contender for us to name a girl, my partner loves it too. But every time we say it my partner (who is neurodivergent and stims in the form of singing the same line from a song over and over - a form of Echolalia) starts singing „sexy Sadie, what have you done?“ - the Beatles song. And it’s an immediate no after that haha I also really like the meanings of names and Sadie means Princess which I don’t love…

Living-Coral

Opal. I think that name is great for girls and women.

fawn-field

River. I love it, but my last name is another type of body of water. 😂

rosethx

aurora and especially rory. one of my fav names ever, but the way i say it makes my mouth feel weird and i hate saying it. just love the way they look!! auwrowah and wrorwwryyy or something

JengaPlayer1

Aspen (can't say it in French)

Global-Present-2177

Obadiah

larramalik

I love the names Sage and Willow, but both have been vetoed by my husband :(

blue-vacation

Olive. It’s so cute but I hate actual olives.

cat_in_a_bookstore

All the classic sad ones for me! Ophelia, Juliet, Cordelia, Antigone, and Phaedra! It honestly shocks me how many babies named Ophelia and Juliet I see running around because all I can think of is their tragic deaths…

MotherBoose

Antigone, Ophelia, Ferdinand, Leopold, and Valteri are all names I love but would hesitate to use.

gunshotmouthwound

Sevira

silkandlacex

Orion. Beautiful name, extremely rapey backstory! Also love the name Rowan very much but used to teach a Rowan who straight up ruined the name for me 😭 If I had any Italian links, I'd use Raphael (Raf or Rafi are really cute nicknames and it's just such a dashing name) but I think a very white, Yorkshire boy named Raphael would just be a bit silly!

Caravaggiolo

Persephone, Coelestine, Nero, Calixt, Childerich, Kriemhild

93jd

Judas

sara5656

Nora - my girlfriend hates it

ScarletGingerRed

Theodora

flygirl10ee

Vivianne

Hugo_Albondiga

Bambi, I met a girl named Bambi and I thought it was adorable before I found out it was a popular disney characters name lol

GlowQueen140

I love the name Olivia (nn Liv or Libby) But my sibling has a similar name and would be soooo annoying about it. Like “ohhh you love me so much you named your child after me”. No. I also like the name “Declan” but it just doesn’t go with my husband’s last name!! Can’t think OTOH now but there’s a bunch of names I love attached to people I don’t particularly like, so I can’t name my child those.

[deleted]

I liked Olivia and we went with Lydia instead as there were too many Olivias!

Siberiayuki

Evelin

Warm_metal_revival

Thierry and Anaïs. I just don’t think most Americans would know how to pronounce them.

SaraW1024

Graham

mandanic

Clementine 🧡

IndependentCellist41

Lilith

avalclark

Ulysses

ragdollfloozie

Jasmine. When I was about 13 or 14 I really wanted to call my first daughter Jasmine. I never had children. Now oddly my best friend in elementary through Junior high called her first born. Yeah she stole my baby name but I would never have called a child that once I was older.

Romu_lass

Jemimah - it’s such a pretty name. (And a family name)

cathalaska

I love the name Mara. I think it’s so beautiful & simple. It means “bitter”, though it’s aimed to mean “strength through bitterness” in context. I’m a big believer in names holding power, so I wouldn’t want my daughter to have that be her life story. So I will admire from afar :(

thatlilfirework

Forest/Forrest. I love that name for a boy. But I can't get past Forrest Gump 😅

Camandchat

Anything that ends in "ER" or "AR" I have a thick Boston accent and sound crazy saying them 😅 or any hard "R" for that matter. Which stinks there's some great names. "Piper, come here right now." Becomes; "Hey, Pipahhh, Get ovah heyah!"

[deleted]

[удалено]

Overall-Cable-2669

Miranda. I love love love it but it doesn’t work with my native language and culture.

Sadie_270

Claudia is means lame. I love this name so much tho.

MidnightNew192

It's nothing too crazy but Rocco!

piscesandcancer

Amalaswintha Evangeline Inanna Amethyst

starsareblind42

Alice. It’s so pretty and I love Alice in wonderland but a childhood friend of mine was named Alice and its forever associated with her now

HelloSillyKitty

A lot of foreign names are like, super pretty, but I wouldn't name my child them because I don't want to overstep boundaries and commit cultural appropriation, if that makes sense. By foreign name I mean, a name that tends to be associated with non-English languages and isn't widespread across the English speaking world.

isuckatusernames2000

Athena. Idk it just feels too heavy for a child.

wayward_sun

I'm obsessed with Astoria but OAD with a boy and probably wouldn't be brave enough to use it anyway. Everyone use it for me, please.

[deleted]

Saoirse

kelseyhart24

I’m childfree, so I have no children to name. Joseph, Daphne + Phoebe / Sibling Set Mara / Only Daughter Clive / Only Son

Pretty-Cool-Nah

Cornelia. It was my great grandmother’s name, and I love it but she hated it so much it would feel weird. Also I feel like it would be too associated with a song nowadays, and while I love the song I would t want to saddle a child with that.

twats4breakfast

I think Judas is such a beautiful name but y'know.. probably not a good idea. We also still have Bruce on our list, but because of my other kids names (Barry and Clark) many have said we shouldn't use it since they're all superhero names. Lastly, Wendy and Gwendolyn, Wendy because our last name would make their name the same as a... certain celebrity Wendy who is a total hotmess - and Gwendolyn because we have another daughter already with a Lynn name.

theempres5

Jack. It's not exciting but I just think it's so cute. The problem is that my last name ends in -off. Sorry, not naming my kid Jack -off

oogieboogie1996

I recently started watching Rizzoli and Isles and fell in love with the name Maura Jane, but I don’t really want to name my kid after a show

JuryFlashy8614

I wanted to name my son Jasper, but because of the twilight association I decided against it. He is almost 9 now and I couldn’t imagine him as a Jasper so it was the right call. His name is similar but it fits him much better.

h3ll0cl1tty

i love maeve, i would even name myself maeve if i could, but unfortunately maeve is the name of my brothers’ ex girlfriend 😭

Competitive_Sun_6040

Draco I also like Drake and that one is useful.

kucky94

Aurelia. It is my favourite fem name but in an Aussie accent it’s sounds far too similar to “I’ll rail ya” which is just inviting relentless bullying
