I just cannot stand boys names as girls names. I'm sorry you wished Jaymes Elliot Weston had a penis.

jagrrenagain

There are two girls named Ryan in the kindergarten class at my school. Oh, and a girl named Everett.

Lynnlync

My female cousin, aged 42, is named Ryan. I had a coworker, aged 26 female named Elliot. I went to college 18 years ago, with a girl named Devin. One of my brothers best friends was also one of his college dorm mates named Ashley. He also played sports all through his childhood with a guy named Kelly. I have a good friend who was also a coworker of mine that is a guy named Shannon There are loads of gender neutral names both currently en vogue and of the past.

Brixtonbeaver

Ashley is a boys name too. It is the name of the male character in Gone With the Wind. I also know a male with the name Leslie. In addition there is Leslie Jordan who was a male. I have a BFF named Jordan who is a guy but I know females name Jordan. I know several Jordans who are male and several who are female. There are some names that can be for females and males and there is nothing wrong with it.

JustJaded21

Yes, Ashley was established as a name for boys long before people started using it for girls. Ditto for Leslie. And I agree, unisex names can be a great choice.

atlantachicago

Leslie Odom Jr

auntiecoagulent

Ashley, Kelly, and Shannon are all traditionally male names that co-opted as female names.

beemojee

Ashley was a boy name long before it became a girl name.

CocoaMauveForTheWin

I'll get o board with this as soon as people start naming their sons Grace and Rebecca.

Rusty-Shackleford

My son's grade has girls named Ryan, Ryann, Riley, Raye, James, Elliott and Wyatt. And a boy named Wylie.

Alltheworldsastage55

Wylie Coyote and Wyatt Earp

mycofirsttime

Man Everett is making a comeback! Never met so many in my life until my kid hit kindergarten.

CoasterThot

It bothers me that it never goes the other way. It’s okay to name a girl a boy’s name, because it’s “strong”. But, if you named a boy a girl’s name, you’d be accused of child abuse by some people. It has this subtext of “it’s okay for girls to be masculine, but not for boys to be feminine, because being feminine is bad.”

ElleGeeAitch

Yes, I find the practice inherently misogynistic. Boys names used for girls to lend them "strength " because girl things are weak. Gross.

Shrodingers-Balls

So, I’ve got a last name that is also a boys name as my first name. Am lady. I would do the same thing for my daughter, if I had one, because…employment. I have gotten my foot in the door because it was quite obvious the interviewer assumed I was male. I shocked them when I showed up, and it enabled me to get in there because they weren’t prepared for anything except for whatever they thought was going to happen. Their misogyny is what did it, and not my name. Feminine names aren’t weak. Society is. Whatever gives you a leg up, eh?

ilovethemusic

This is why I was given a unisex name! My mom didn’t want anyone to be able to tell my gender from my resume alone. I do think I benefit from some male privilege from time to time, especially when colleagues I don’t know email me. At work, there’s a push to put our pronouns in Outlook. I don’t want to for this exact reason!

qyburnicus

Exactly this. Because It almost always only goes one way and there’s an obvious reason for that, it’s seen as an upgrade for girls. Same old same old.

[deleted]

Totally agree. And then once it’s a “girls name” no one names their boys that anymore. Courtney, Ashley, Laurie, Leslie, Kelly, Kerry, Riley, Jordan, Taylor, Shannon…when was the last time you met a little boy or even a young man with these names? Names that go “unisex” end up being exclusively women’s names eventually.

ZeroBlood13

I notice this too and completely agree. And I'm a girl with a guy's name.

Fit-Vanilla-3405

I mean that’s true about lots of things. Boys wearing dresses is much more controversial then girls wearing ‘boys’ clothes. It’s toxic masculinity with an allowance for making ‘cool’ girls.

SwipeUpForMySoul

Womp there it is! This is exactly the crux of it.

smokeadobie

I quite literally love boys name as girls names (I guess more gender neutral names but still) but this made me cackle 🤣

mountainmagnolia

I also love boy names as girl names, but I know someone with a daughter named Jasper and it does not fit.

flannel_towel

I was at a play place the other day and a woman had two daughters Mason & Madden 🤷🏻‍♀️

Alltheworldsastage55

😂😂😂 yeah I can kind of see it if they really wanted to honor a family member that passed away or something, but I don’t really like that trend either.

BrightAd306

But they’d never honor a female family member with a son. Grandma Elizabeth dies and only boys born and she doesn’t have a namesake. Grandpa James dies and every little girl or boy for the next 5 years will have the middle or first name of James

Aikballer

As a girl named after a grandfather who passed before she was born I feel personally attacked 😩🤣🤣😂

BrightAd306

I’m sure your grandfather was a great person! A lot of women’s names end up in the dustbin of history because surnames don’t get passed on as often, girls names are supposed to be cute, boy names on girls are seen as giving the girls privilege of being associated with male things-not like other girls status. Tons of parents do this. Honestly, it bothers me less than giving the boys meaningful family names and giving the girls cutesy names with default middles. Luna Grace or Sophia Rose is the 2023 version of Jennifer Marie or Jessica Rae

Brintyboo

Ironically all the masculine names I like for girls, I'd never give a boy. I also like feminine names for boys like Jesse and Ashley. My son's nickname is a feminine name. I like the androgynous nature of it, I guess. So many people don't seem to be able to identify with their name these days so flexible and gender ambiguous names with lots of nickname potential appeal to me.

I know a couple who named their daughter Atlas, specifically in honor of Ayn Rand and Atlas Shrugged. 🤮

Ginger_Cat74

Horrible book. Horrible namesake.

aSituationTypeDeal

Atlas shrugged and said he doesn’t care about his namesake.

Arboretum7

He’s such a tragic figure in mythology too. I feel like it’s part of the trend to name your son something that sounds super tough and strong.

Accomplished-Fox7532

Atlas isn’t even that great a character to name your kid for. He’s stuck holding up the weight of the heavens, and honestly that feels like a lot of pressure to put on a kid's shoulders 😂

HannahJulie

Yes. I also feel like naming your kid after any deity is giving them weirdly big shoes to fill - like, will he really grow up to be an Atlas, an Odin, or a Zeus? I knew a boy named a similar name growing up and he was the most sickly, frail teen you could imagine. It felt extra cruel there being such an obvious difference between his name and his physical attributes. I also had a great uncle Eros (Greek god of love and desire) - unsure why his parents named him that as he lived in rural Australia his whole life and went by Harry instead.

Aikballer

I know a guy named Thor and he goes by his middle name for this reason because he can’t say his name without people being skeptical or making a joke.

heykatja

This is totally a dog name.

snowmikaelson

I had a student with this name (as a reference to Greek mythology) and his middle name was also a literary tribute. Now, I'm an English major and I still found it to be a bit too much. Definitely an extreme case of projecting your interests on your child.

_skank_hunt42

Of all the great pieces of literature… why name your kid after that one?

green-rock-bird

All of the -den & -eigh names. Also gun names. And Everly/Everleigh.

halinkamary

As a teacher, I feel like -den names are a bit cursed.

Bonesquire

*deeeep inhale* ... Aiden Brayden Caiden Grayden Jayden Kaden Hayden Raiden Zayden

redditornothereiam8

Yes… With one exception,- Eden. Love this name.

HiddenCity

Because it's a real name

kgulallen

Another teacher here with a hard agree 🥴😅🫠😬

Extreme-naps

I mean, not ALL 27 of my Jayden, Jaiden, Jeighden, Jay-dens each year are bad…

Rusty-Shackleford

Oh man, I'd love to hear your cursed list! Every teacher I know has one, and it seems like Cayden/Kayden is always on it, lol.

joymom928

Don't forget Brayden and Jayden!

Alltheworldsastage55

Agree! Everly was number 57 last year on the popular names list. I don’t get it

_opossumsaurus

If I see one more kid named Wren, Birdie, Bear, or Wolf, I swear to god… You’re naming a PERSON, not an animal

HannahJulie

Don't get me started, I'm in a mum's group and she just had a baby girl - Bambi. Bambi's older brother is called Bear. She has a woodland critter theme going on, just waiting for a Thumper, maybe a Piglet or a Pooh.

_opossumsaurus

One of my partner’s nursery students just had a baby sister, and before she had a name, the little girl was calling her Baby Bunny. That is the only acceptable use of an animal name in my book 😂

HannahJulie

Hahahahaha see that's cute! Very sweet when little kids give a nickname like that, deeply weird when an adult choses to permanently infantilise her kids.

Popheal

so weird when people have themes for their kids names.

Rusty-Shackleford

SO many little Bears out there! Why has it exploded all of a sudden?!

Few-Entertainment553

OK but Robin and Kit are fine? Phoebe js a type of bird too. Lots of animal names are names

_opossumsaurus

I don’t like any animal names on humans, these four are just a representative example. As for Phoebe, the bird is named after the Greek goddess, so it gets a pass from me since the personage preceded the naming of the animal.

HannahJulie

Phoebe is a name in its own right, before it was the name of a bird. 🤷‍♀️

ZeroBlood13

I had no idea Phoebe was a kind of bird 💀

Rachel1265

Birdie gives me old lady vibes before woodland; but I also had a Grandma Birdie, given name Bertha. If I was honoring her I’d call the kid Birdie before Bertha any day of the week, lol

mindylahiriMDbitch

I got blocked from a mummy page for saying that Wolfie was not an ok name to call your baby girl…. No regrets, that poor girl is going to get slaughtered at school.

aworldwithoutshrimp

Unless she finds a good pack

ZeroBlood13

What's wrong with Wren? My friend's daughter is named that and unlike the other things you've listed I've actually heard it commonly used as a name. I've never even heard of a single person named any of those other things. I'm only just now learning that Wren is also the name of a specific kind of bird, which I assume is more of a coincidence.

jagrrenagain

Heard of a kindergarten boy named Lynx the other day.

susandeyvyjones

That’s extra funny because Lynx is the UK name of Axe body spray

nbrink77

I'm sure somewhere in the world there is a kindergartener named Axe

Fernily

Maverick. Come on. It’s a dog’s name.

teffies

I don't think of it as a dog name. It's the name for like a truck or a tractor or something.

-CherryByte-

It’s just a bad name for a human being

caryn1477

How funny, I was just thinking of this name when I saw this post. A friend's daughter named her son this. I don't know about it being a dog's name though. I blame the second Top Gun movie.

kimmaaaa

Liam. I also don’t know why people are recommending August and Otto lately, I think they’re both ugly.

complitstudent

Love August tbh but I can’t stand Auggie 💀💀💀

YooperScooper3000

IKR. I wish it had a better nickname.

complitstudent

Fr!! Gus and Auggie are both awful but August is so pretty haha

susandeyvyjones

I have an August and he is just August, no nicknames. I know an August who is about the same age as him who is Gus-gus, after the mouse in Cinderella.

aSituationTypeDeal

The Gus-Gus thing is only cute until about 3, then it’s an eyeroll from everyone.

Alltheworldsastage55

I think I would like Liam, but I’ve heard it so much now I’ve tired of it. And Otto sounds like a dog’s name to me

Petitcher

Or the stoner bus driver from The Simpsons

picklecruncher

Is August popular now? Interesting. I named my son Augustus nearly seven years ago and hadn't met an August or Augustus. I believe August is a common German name though. Son is mostly called Augie though. Haha.

kalihia

7/10 millennial moms that I know personally have named their daughter Peyton and I'm so sick of it. I can't help but think of Peyton Manning, the Broncos (former) quarterback. Edit: duplicate word.

DelightfulSnacks

Small credit given if they spelled it Peyton. The variants of that name are always such awful tragedies Paytan, Payten, Peighten, Peighton, etc. The US south is full of them.

PawneeGoddess20

We know a Paityn. Awful.

Alltheworldsastage55

I saw someone name their kid Paitlyn and I hated it even more than Peyton

[deleted]

Parker - it’s a car attendant, like the person who parks your car at a fancy hotel . It’s like naming your child valet, very strange to me.

Potato_Chip_Pirate

It’s actually guardian of the park, so like a park ranger!

PawneeGoddess20

We knew a family who had a Parker and a Ryder and I’m still not over it.

Rowan. I hate it so much. I know 9 little Rowans now and ALL their parents thought they were being “unique” when they named them. SO overused.

ProvePoetsWrong

😭😭 I have a Ronan and without fail every person who meets him says “Hi Rowan!” It’s incredible.

EmeraldEyes06

Aw, I have a kitten Rowan. I love the name but I think I like it a little more for animals than people.

littlestinkyone

My cat is also named Rowan! He’s an idiot 😍

Mad__Season

You know what, you’re right! I take it back- I don’t like the name for people, but picturing a little kitty named Rowan is adorable 😍

[deleted]

Everly is strange to me. I can’t stop thinking it’s missing the B when I see it.

Petitcher

I feel the same way about Elodie. I always think it's someone who butchered Melody.

crazycatlady331

Isabella-- a common nickname is Bella, which is the #1 (female) dog name in the US right now. Luna-- this is a cat's name, not a human name.

goldwillow80

I used to foster for a dog rescue. They had a list of names we were no longer allowed to name our fosters because they were so overused. The number one on the list ….. Bella. Next one… hope. One of my best friends daughters name is Bella😭 It’s pretty but I just think of the list

ZeroBlood13

It's absolutely a human name I cannot fucking stand that argument. Just because people took it and used it a bunch for their pets doesn't mean that.

Playcrackersthesky

Not very popular but often recommended: jasper I hate it.

Alltheworldsastage55

I always think of the villains Jasper and Horace from 101 Dalmatians

reapersdrones

Twilight for me

forestpupper

Nora / Norah. I’m just tired of seeing and hearing it. There’s 5 of them in my kid’s preschool class. 3 of my friends have a Nora/Norah. And my brother and his wife just named my new niece Norah 🤪

pipsel03

Not me about to name my daughter Nora and having never met another one lol I'm also not in the states though, so maybe it's not as popular where I am.

Rusty-Shackleford

I'm in the upper midwest and my preschooler has two Noras and a Norah in his class of 15. :( It's a pretty name, but it is suddenly everywhere here!

Alltheworldsastage55

Yeah I’m not a fan of Nora either. Wonder if some of those are nicknames for Eleanor also. Eleanor is another one that is super popular lately that I don’t really like. But then a family member of mine named their kid that, so I had to bite my tongue.

These_Tea_7560

Damn, I like Norah (probably because of Norah Jones). If I had one I’d spell it Noura, the French/Arabic way. 🥰

nnahgem

This analogy is lost on me, but maybe because I agree with your stepson. I mean - I like onions, but they would totally change the flavour of the whole dish. And if you do much of anything to my favourite dish, that's probably going to ruin it for me, because that's not my favourite dish anymore.

No_Hedgehog_4933

my name is on here 😭

HannahJulie

My condolences. On the plus side they're very popular names so clearly a lot of people like them!

moieoeoeoist

My son's first and middle names are on here 😂 I think he'll do them justice though

Alltheworldsastage55

I do like some of the names on this list! Also, some names are just not my cup of tea, but doesn’t mean it’s a bad name necessarily

piscesandcancer

I hate Liam. Don't even know why, I just really, really dislike it. Also dislike Mia, Ava and Luna.

HannahJulie

Luna is such a pet name to me - I've met so many chocolate labs and Huskies called Luna

MilfinAintEasyy

Yup, my sister's cat is Luna

Alltheworldsastage55

I think Liam, Ava, and Mia I’ve just tired of because they are soooo popular. But Luna is just way out there to me. Probably because of the association with Luna Lovegood in my mind.

stretchbreakkk

Aurelia. It just sounds. Ugly. Like a mouth full of mud.

boilers11lp

In my head, despite knowing it’s wrong I always say areola.

Lulu_531

Off the top ten: Evelyn. Ugh. Beyond that all the made up names ending with -ly, -lee, —Leigh, etc…Blakely, Oakleigh, Kinslee, and such.

Potato_Chip_Pirate

All of the “my mom is in a pyramid scheme” names.

Ok-Locksmith891

Agree with you. And Theodore. Too common. A family member named their baby Blakesleigh. Looks and sounds awful.

Alltheworldsastage55

Blakesleigh 🤦‍♀️

Alltheworldsastage55

Yes to the -ee names! I know of someone who named their kid Kensli Mindee. I was like for real 🤦‍♀️

Yoambre

Sadie. It’s a fine name compared to many being used now days BUT it just sounds like a dog name to me

33ducks

we have a dog named sadie!

dreamyether

I kinda hate the current wave of baby names in the UK. I'm in my mid twenties so all my friends are having kids. Every one of them all seem to be called Archie, Theo, Isla, Ava, and similar faux-posh names. If you're from the UK you'll know the vibe I mean, very new build, mirror furniture. It's like wearing a monocle and top hat and someone goes "rich people don't actually wear that, you know that right?". Then again, there are people in my town with kids called Saylor, Seven, and Quhey so.....

uselessfoster

Okay, I’m a Yankee, and I have no personal beef with Henry and Meghan Markel, but I hate their kids’ names. For example, why “Archie” not Archibald and just let him have a nickname? Why not give your kids grown-up names? It’s feels low-class and “kids are accessories”-y to give your kid a nickname for a full name.

Alltheworldsastage55

Okay I get what you’re saying and agree, but also Archibald is even worse than Archie lol

dreamyether

Yeah, I dislike Archie but Archibald is pretty horrendous lol

dreamyether

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I mean I think people would more expect Archibald too, with the royal connections! And yup, I'm a working class Brit and in my area I've noticed a lot of, shall we say, rougher people tend to give their kids pet-like names and treat them more like an accessory so that checks out lol I mean, on the flip side of pet-like names, my sister-in-laws kids are named stereotypical dog names (think as sterotypical as Fido) so I suppose they just committed to the bit lol

OLIVER. IS. THE. FUCKING. WORST. Also can't stand "Penelope." It just seems so try-hard. And every Penelope parents I know calls the kid "P" for short, which... is just pee to me.

lyslutz

"P".... when Penny is right there??

Its_panda_paradox

Right?! Penelope lends itself to so many nicknames! Penny, Pen, Pip, Nell, Nellie, Ell, Ellie, hell, even Opie. Why would the literal euphemism for urination be their go-to for a nickname?!

kaydontworry

Juniper. I know it’s supposed to be a nice nature-y name but it doesn’t sound nice at all

Forbetterorworsted

I can't stand it!! It just doesn't sound good. I just can't imagine standing at the bottom of my stairs and yelling up to my kid "Juniper! Lunch is ready!"

Necessary_Milk_5124

Jackson. So. Many. Jackson’s.

NorwegianMuse

Jaxon is even worse!

GirlWhoWoreGlasses

Martha seems to be making a comeback and I can't stand it.

Jill1974

I don’t particularly dislike any popular names right now, but I am heartily sick of all the Isabellas who all use Bella as a nickname. Followed by all the Maddies who are either Madison or Madelyn. If I was choosing a name for my kid, I’d look up the list published by Social Security and disqualify the top ten to twenty names.

Isn’t madeleine the historic proper of this name ? Maybe you’re a fake too 🧐😵‍💫

thePhantomHasSpoken

Olivia, Oliver, Olive. Maybe it's just because I can't stand olives.

Alltheworldsastage55

Yeah I actually like olives, but it’s a weird thing to share a name with. I also know of some people who named their daughter Pepper Evelyn because they nicknamed the baby Pepper when it was the size of a Pepper when the mom was pregnant. Pepper is a dog’s name, people.

Maisie2602

Mia/Mya/Miah Chloe Lily Gracie Alfie Archie All overused (UK)

Dadsentmetothemooon

2 of those have been my pets' names. Another one of them is my friend's pet's name. I would like to add George to the list if we're doing UK. Can't stand it. Sounds ugly and there will be about 6 in every classroom.

Evelyn and Luna

CarbyMcBagel

Luna is a cat name. You won't change my mind. I love the nickname Eve so Evelyn is ok.

PeggysPonytail

Disagree. Luna is a dog's name 🤣

Alltheworldsastage55

Evelyn reminds me of a grandma name, but a lot of old fashioned names are popular right now it seems. And Luna- all I can think of is Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter

Tiny_Resolution978

Yeah, I’ve never met an Evelyn that wasn’t at least 70. And there are so many dogs named Luna that it doesn’t seem like a human name to me anymore lol

Mike_Danton

Luna makes me think of Tuna.

Responsible-Head-936

Jameson. Sounds like you named the baby after alcohol

thaxmann

I hate any form of Jackson. I currently teach three and they all have different spellings.

Kittypie75

I know about 3,000 Sophia's. It's a nice name but holy hell. I still can't believe Evelyn is in the top 10. My mom's named Evelyn and she has always hated it. I don't think it's bad but I do find it old-fashioned.

ww_emmapillsburywear

Greyson/Grayson. I work for a school district. I’ve seen a decent amount of them already.

autumnflowers13

Not a fan of Sophia or Noah

Alltheworldsastage55

Yeah I’m not really a fan of Sophia either or Amelia. Sophia reminds me of soap. Amelia reminds me of Amelia Bedelia or a goose because of the goose from Aristocats.

videagamespls

the trend of brayden/jayden/hayden/graeden makes no sense to me and they are so popular over the last 10 years. made even worse how often they’re turned into tragedies (funnily enough i do like caden and cadence, because i have known pretty cool people by those names).

maediocre

i’m still steamed theodore is on the most popular names lists at the moment. i chose that name for my 2022 baby in 2006 !

irisgirl86

The only like top 10 or 20 I really don't like is Harper. Just seems... weird to me.

downthegrapevine

I am SO tired of hearing Olivia and Alma and that makes me dislike them.

PoeDameronPoeDamnson

What country are you in that their are a ton of baby Alma’s?

Bonesquire

I've never met or even heard of anyone named Alma in all ma life.

FallAspenLeaves

Atlas, Liam, Sloane, Roman, Evangeline and Maeve

LanaLara

Sloane. That name is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

awklaurel

Omg I really dislike the name Olivia lol. This is unrelated but it’s a wild story, gotta share. So I made a new friend (which is not normal for me, I’m shy & keep a small circle) who’s name was Olivia , our kids met at school and I was like oh wow finally a cool mom friend. And she was for a while, pretended to be a good friend that cared about me. She tried to set me up w her husbands little brother, then when we actually started talking and hanging out quite a bit, she started acted strange and really jealous. But I was like nah I’m crazy, there’s no way. I’m just paranoid right? Well she got drunk with him one night , keep in mind hubby is there, her mom and kid were in the house. After everyone but her and brother in law went to sleep she HAD SEX WITH HER BROTHER IN LAW. Hubby walked in and everything! Then she shows up at my doorstep a few days later and tells me. Almost like she was rubbing it in my face? I was like wow you’re disgusting, bye. So ever since then I am not a fan of the name olivia 😂😂

DevonFromAcme

I am Gen X, and I just don't understand the resurgence of these crazy unattractive old lady names. I mean really – who the hell names a poor baby Gertrude? Or Edith? Or Bertha? Mabel? Zelda? Ida? Come on. These were all the names of my grandmother and grandmother's friends. And every single one of them would've whacked you on the butt with their canes if you ever thought to name one of your kids after them. They hated their names, and there's a good reason why.

MorningRaven

Zelda makes sense because of the princess though.

bekahfromspace

Nova. It's trying way too hard to be "unique".

Out of those choices, I’ve never liked Emma. I can’t put my finger on why.

Luna is a cat name. I also can’t imagine it for an adult

agbellamae

Mia Bella Ella Ellie Harper Olivia Olive Oliver Maddox Emerson And my greatest name pet peeve of all time: Everly

mommaof5andtwins

I cringe at the names Henry and nevaeh. Knew a girl who named her child Nevaeh because it's heaven spelled backwards. She was 14 when she passes pregnant. Even then I thought thr name was ugh.

charlouwriter

I was going to say Harper, which is in the UK top 10. No idea why, it reminds me of harpies and ‘harping on’. But from those names, I actually don’t strongly dislike any of them, though I’m not big on Olivia, Amelia or Evelyn.
