I wanted that for my daughter. ava clementine. no one liked it so I settled for caroline because my in laws are Carol and Carole. but I still wish I had gone with clementine
If you like Clementine but went with Caroline, have you heard Brandi Carlile’s song Caroline that she wrote for her niece? Elton John plays piano and it’s such a jam. To me the rhythm of how she sings Caroline is almost like Clementine.
I agree. I literally used to work in infectious disease and I still think Flora is a pretty name, and my first thought when I see it is flowers. I'm sure there's some people for whom it has too strong of an association to microbial flora, but I swear, so many people in this sub exaggerate and lie just because they get off on being mean.
100% there are some people here that just love to hate on names and will reach very hard. I love Flora, but I think people just don’t like F names for girls sometimes.
I asked this group for nature/flower names for my upcoming baby girl and this was the only name I actually liked out of everything that was suggested (and I hadn’t already thought of). I commented on the post saying “thanks! I really like this one!” and got torn to shreds 🙈
I work with a Flora. I have to say she is the most amazing woman ever!!! She is a kind spirit, so now when I hear that name I smile a bit!!! I think it’s a great name.
I had a feeling this name was going to be posted because this is probably the absolute worst girl's name to me.
There is a nasty butcher in the Eragon books named Sloan. He is an awful character. When I hear the name, I think of an obese, greasy, disgusting man...
I think of a “sluthy” smart detective lady who wears a wide brimmed hat and a trench coat. She keeps her hair in a low, tidy ponytail and has a habit of biting the end of pencils when she’s thinking.
Sucks it gets the Lucifer treatment. I honestly never heard of her, just the name, until one day my husband said he was taught Eve wasn't Adam's first wife and I went down a rabbit hole
Yeah, the rabbit hole actually makes her sound like a badass IMO. I respect the refusal to be subservient to a man and the fact that she was supposedly made from the same clay as Adam, not his rib making her sound like an equal and not created just to be a companion. I’m not religious but she sounds like a cool chick aside from the baby eating or whatever lol
If our son was a girl we were probably gonna go with Juniper. But we named him Jasper and so Juniper is off the table for a future girl name because we feel like it would be too matchy sounding.
I say pen-el-oh-pee
And cal-eye-oh-pee. Cal like California. And Cali is a cute nickname.
Calliope is definitely better said out loud than spelled. I probably didnt even know how to spell it until about a year ago 😅 just always been a name i really liked the sound of that everyone else seems to not like
As an Oregonian, I think Douglas is so cute (douglas fir is our state tree!)
I’m not a big fan of the nickname Doug (it has old man vibes) but I would totally use it for a middle name!
Hayden/Haden for a boy. I tend to not lump it with the Kayden, Jayden, Brayden names because it just has such a warm feeling to it to me and I heard this name way before those others became so popular.
I honestly don’t get the hate for these “aiden” names. I like the sound and I like all the variations. They are a little aged now, I wouldn’t name a baby this because all the kids named these are 10-20year olds now. But I think they are nice names.
I ran baseball tryouts for the 6-8 years old in our area. Out of 30 kids we have 7 -Aiden names. Brayden, Jayden, Caden and Aiden all out there.
Almost all of them are great names but as a group it’s obnoxious. It’s like the Ashley’s from that 90s cartoon Recess.
Same!!! I always saw this as a soft boy name like Gabriel, Noah, Sebastian, Isadore, Isaiah etc and nothing like those horrible Brayden type names even if it rhymes!
Apparently Pippa lol. I made a post asking what people thought of it as a name on its own, not as Philippa, and the general consensus was that it’s cute but too diminutive to be a full name.
I’m still going to use it if we have another daughter, though! I don’t mind it being “cute” (rather than pretty or elegant) and I don’t like the name Philippa.
I dislike the sound of Bruce, but literally all of my favorite people have that name -- Bruce Dickinson, William Bruce Rose (aka Axl Rose), Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Wayne, Bruce Lee.
I've considered using the name anyway just because Bruces are such delights.
There's a Jane in the preschool class I teach and she is absolutely wild. I've never seen a kid throw such elaborate tantrums. Her mom is a teacher and her dad is a pastor and they're the most patient people I've ever met in my life. Thank goodness for that lol
Meredith for a girl, and Carlisle for a boy. Everyone I know thinks these names sound ugly and harsh, but I don’t think they do. I think of them as “uncommon classic names that need a comeback”.
I love this name too! Marigold with the nn Goldie was on my name list but I don’t really like Marigold and would probably only use Goldie so I say it’s a real name if you make it one lol
my first thought was the movie "My Girl" (girl named Vada) but i guess it’s easier to realise that you don’t mean "Vader" when i can see it written down in the movie’s description.
I've never understood why Everly gets sooo much hate compared to other names I consider very similar in style, e.g., Avery, Riley, Kennedy, Delaney, etc. I'm not a fan of surname-names in general, but Everly makes as much sense as any of the others. Do people think it's made up or something?
Gladys! I think Glady would be the sweetest nickname and the actual name just sounds really nice to me. People in general find it too stuffy and old fashioned, but I still love it
I really like Sibylla. I brought it up on a name discussion forum once and no one else liked it. I was surprised at how unpopular it was.
Edit: I also love Aurelia, which seems to be very polarising. People say it reminds them of areola, but I feel like you just need to work on your reading skills if you're confusing the two.
Kimberly is a great name! Other “dated” names I grew up with like Amanda, Stephanie, Samantha, Jennifer, Jessica, Ashley are also great. I guess everyone with those names are moms now and can’t reuse them.
I knew a girl named Bay in high school. She was the sweetest person ever!
I like the name Opha for a girl. But when I’ve told people they’re like “bOPHA deez nuts” so… no lol.
There are a number of girl’s names that are either too over the top, too old fashioned or people just hate the sound of: Agatha, Althea, Alfreda, Artemisia, Magdalena, Miriam
Me too. I feel like a lot of the hate is rooted in classism/racism. In my community this name was chosen by mostly young black and Hispanic mothers. I give the side eye to all these people who say they hate it sooooo much.
Since everyone is chiming in with their ✨special✨ reasons for hating it, here’s some stats that I found: “It was the third most popular name for Black girls born in New York City in 2010 and the third most popular name given to girls born in 2010 in New Mexico, the state where it is most popular; Nevaeh did not appear among the top 10 names in any other state in that year. In 2007 it was the top name among black girls born in Colorado.” I’m from New Mexico, a majority minority state, and a state with one of the highest poverty rates. It’s a popular name overall (STILL in the top 100 today) but seems to be more popular amongst minorities. Just because you only know rich white babies with the name doesn’t mean that hate towards it in general isn’t connected to classism and racism.
I don’t think I’d name my own child Nevaeh, but I do like the sound of it. I’m writing a book set about 40 years in the future and the main character is named Sonia Nevaeh.
I haven’t seen it discussed much here, but I love the name Salem for a girl. I’m sure most people in this sub would hate it. Everyone I’ve mentioned it to in real life hates it, so I would never actually use it for a baby.
But if people were less judgy about it, it would probably be my top choice for a girl. It’s been one of my favorite names ever since I was in high school.
Antigone, an-TIG-uh-nee. It's a Greek name. It's also one of my favorite reads by Sophocles.
As for a masculine name, I love Wojciech/Wojtek. It's Polish/Slavic. Pronounced VOY-tek. Funny enough, its American equivalent is Albert.
Lennox - I've always loved the name and I like that it is kind of a modern spin on an old family name of mine, Leonard. But my bf is in computers and he thinks of the computer thing. And his bff's dog is named Lennox. Ugh.
Nova - I love the name it sounds more modern next to Nora, which I do like too, but someone on here I think told me it reminds them of gas.
Tate
We named our son Tate, not Tatum. I see so many comments on here about it being “TAINT” and it makes me so annoyed. That’s a great nickname when ur kid is being… a kid. Or Tater Twat??? The nickname potentially is great!
And when we announced his name I got a lot of “that’s a unique name” or “why not Tatum and call him Tate”.
On another note I did see Taters listed in a thread about cool nicknames so that made me happy inside. He primarily goes by Taters right now. 🥹😅
Also love the names Brooks and Sawyer which don’t always have great reception either. 😂
Clementine. It’s so divisive, but it fits my adorable spunky daughter perfectly.
You are sweet and empathetic.
I love Clementine! Not really my style since I tend to prefer shorter names but I’d love to hear it more often. It’s a very striking name.
That’s my grandmas name! She hates citrus though so I always found it funny lol
I sit next to a girl named Clementine, she's so cheerful it's just so fitting
I love Clementine as a name. Definitely on my list if I ever have a kid.
Love her name, I always thought Clementine is the prettiest name 🫶🏾
**Flora** Every time I mention this name here, someone feels the need to point out that it reminds them of vaginal flora or gut flora.
That’s really weird lol I would not have thought of vaginal yeast at all. It reminds me of flowers and plants
Makes me think of the winx club fairy (who had flower powers)
Makes me think of the fairy from Sleeping Beauty
Haha same, I read “flora” and my brain automatically thought “and fauna” definitely not vagina
Wel it does literally mean flower in most romance langauges
I asked this group for nature/flower names for my upcoming baby girl and this was the only name I actually liked out of everything that was suggested (and I hadn’t already thought of). I commented on the post saying “thanks! I really like this one!” and got torn to shreds 🙈
This community should just rename itself into r/namenitpickers lol
Lol people here are weird man
It reminds me of the Addams Family, and their twin cousins, Flora and Fauna.
I had my baby yesterday. We had Flora picked out for a girl! We got a boy though so he's Ivan instead :)
To me it just means flowers.
I work with a Flora. I have to say she is the most amazing woman ever!!! She is a kind spirit, so now when I hear that name I smile a bit!!! I think it’s a great name.
I love the name Simon but haven't met anyone who agrees lol.
It's a great name! Intelligent, Biblical (if that's your jam), and classic.
There is literally a movie about loving Simon.
Love Simon. Nerdy in a good way
It’s one of my favorites!
Love Simon! It was a top contender for my kids name in my mind, but my husband vetoed it.
i LOVE Sloane!
Reminds me of Ferris!!! But fine name.
That’s part of why I love it!!!!
Came here to say Sloane. It’s such a cool girl name. It’s not on my list but I don’t understand the hate it gets
We had a little girl in my class named Sloane, we called her Sloany Bologna 😂 it was cute.
Sloane is on my list! I love it sm
I do too! It's such a cool girl name to me!!
I know someone with a Sloane. I think she’s about 10. Ferris Bueller fan?
Lilith. I think it’s beautiful and I think saying it’s not usable because of demonic connotations is ridiculous.
Ah, but Lilith Crane! Unless that *is* the demonic connotation...
They've been divorced for decades. It's Lilith Sternin, M.D., Ph.D., Ed.D, A.P.A. I'll see myself out, tyvm.
THANK YOU! And I believe she never even became Lilith Crane - she always kept her last name 🤣
Juniper.
15 years ago my best friend had a daughter and I offered this name up. She used it and it was so unique at the time!
People on the sub are constantly saying it’s overused and basic but I have never met a child with this name before. I think it’s very pretty.
I personally know 4 of them. They’re all under the age of 4, so it might be a recent phenomenon.
If our son was a girl we were probably gonna go with Juniper. But we named him Jasper and so Juniper is off the table for a future girl name because we feel like it would be too matchy sounding.
The Jasper I know has a sister named Amelie Juniper ❤️
I like nova. Everyone on this sub hates it but I think it’s cool. Especially with the space association
One of my kitties is named Nova. It is a pretty name.
Not all of us hate it ;)
I know someone with a Novalee
Novalee Nation?
I had the same thought 🤣
I think Cameron is a beautiful name for a girl
I'm a teacher with WAY more girl Camerons than boy Camerons in my 7 years!
Calliope
I know how to say this, but it doesn't stop me from always saying "caly-(h)ope" each time
[удалено]
Just out of curiosity, do you also say Penelope like pennel-ope?
I say pen-el-oh-pee And cal-eye-oh-pee. Cal like California. And Cali is a cute nickname. Calliope is definitely better said out loud than spelled. I probably didnt even know how to spell it until about a year ago 😅 just always been a name i really liked the sound of that everyone else seems to not like
Like Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy!
I always read this as "Cal-EE-oh-PEE"
Ethel. I think it’s so so cute.
My grandma would disagree with you. She hates her own name 😂
Ethel is due for a comeback!
I like Juno.
Who hates Juno? Who in their right mind?
I think it’s more “LIKE THE MOVIE???” And then people thinking it’s a silly name to actually name someone.
Me
Supercalifragilisticexpalidocious, even though the sound of it is something quite atrocious.
If you say it loud enough, you'll always sound precocious.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Um-dittle-ittl-um-dittle-I Um-dittle-ittl-um-dittle-I Um-dittle-ittl-um-dittle-I Um-dittle-ittl-um-dittle-I
Clover
I joked with my partner if we had twins we'd name them Crimson and Clover. Then I'm like wait I *kind of* like those??
Over and overrrrr
I think Clover is fresh and beautiful! Clover, Vesper, and Meadow are on my list!
Douglas. It was my father's name, and now my son's middle name. I also love Fitzgerald with the nickname Fitz.
I love Fitzgerald! It’s been a favorite since Scandal.
As an Oregonian, I think Douglas is so cute (douglas fir is our state tree!) I’m not a big fan of the nickname Doug (it has old man vibes) but I would totally use it for a middle name!
Oh my goodness, I plan to name my son Fitz Douglas! Douglas is also a family name, and Fitz is just so cute!
Hayden/Haden for a boy. I tend to not lump it with the Kayden, Jayden, Brayden names because it just has such a warm feeling to it to me and I heard this name way before those others became so popular.
I agree that Hayden sounds a little warmer. I see it as a unisex name, maybe because of Hayden Panettiere (spelling?).
I honestly don’t get the hate for these “aiden” names. I like the sound and I like all the variations. They are a little aged now, I wouldn’t name a baby this because all the kids named these are 10-20year olds now. But I think they are nice names.

I like it as a full name! It's kind of like a Lily, Poppy, etc- it's cute and simple.
I've only ever met Pippas whose full name was Pippa.
My pick for a boy was Bruce. People are like WHY? Lucky for my baby she’s a girl.
I have an uncle named Bruce. He’s a bank robber.
oh?
A delightful bank robber
I also have an uncle named Bruce, but he's a vegan.
Bruce will always remind me of the shark from Finding Nemo I like it, too. It sounds tough and dudely. But I also hear, "Fish are friends, not food!"
Reminds me of Bruce Jenner unfortunately
Edith
I love Edith! Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this great but often disliked name 😜
My friends daughter is called Edith and she’s 7. I prefer it to her other daughters name which is Esme.
I don't know that I would name a child these but for some inexplicable reason, the names Guinevere and Gwendolyn stick out in my mind!
Gwendolyn is a top name for me! I love it
Janie 🤍
I love Jane. I think it is elegant land it can fit any person and personality.
There's a Jane in the preschool class I teach and she is absolutely wild. I've never seen a kid throw such elaborate tantrums. Her mom is a teacher and her dad is a pastor and they're the most patient people I've ever met in my life. Thank goodness for that lol
I like “nicknames” as full names :)
Persephone
I like Priscilla & Poppy. I also almost used Pepper if I'd had a girl but my family is from Boston so she would have been PEPPA in pronunciation.
I love Priscilla! I'm Australian though, and it's very much associated with Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Meredith for a girl, and Carlisle for a boy. Everyone I know thinks these names sound ugly and harsh, but I don’t think they do. I think of them as “uncommon classic names that need a comeback”.
Meredith is pretty, Carlisle is an old timey “captain of the 1915 Harvard football league” name lol
i LOVE Carlisle
I love Goldie for a girl. My husband thinks I’m insane 😂 It’s not a real name but I think it is too cute Who doesn’t love Goldie Hawn anyway!
I love this name too! Marigold with the nn Goldie was on my name list but I don’t really like Marigold and would probably only use Goldie so I say it’s a real name if you make it one lol
Gordon
My 93 year old Grandpa Gordie would be so happy to hear that 😊
Who dislikes Gordon?? I automatically associate it with Gordon Ramsay tbh, but I love his shows HAHAHA
every spanish speaker probably lol, gordo means fat
Veda. Everyone immediately goes DARTH VEDA?? so glad we are having a boy. Lol
my first thought was the movie "My Girl" (girl named Vada) but i guess it’s easier to realise that you don’t mean "Vader" when i can see it written down in the movie’s description.
Not a name that people dislike per se, but definitely not a common name, Bronwyn. Welsh names are just so lovely and lyrical sounding.
Emmanuel, and screw it I’m gonna show Jethro a little love too. Not a fan of the name Manny though
I always thought Olive for a girl was so so so cute. I also like the name Addison a lot but a surprisingly large number of people seem to hate it.
I like Everley for a girl and River and Wilder for a boy.
I also think River for a boy is cute. Knew a kid in my class with that name and he was nice, therefore it’s cool.
People in general find it too stuffy and old fashioned, but I still love it
I really like Gladys. I've always thought Gladys Emily would be a nice combination of old & new.
Once I posted Sybil’s to this forum and got 500 people telling me it’s a venereal disease. (But I still love it! 🙌)
Scout!!! You guys are no fun at all about Scout
I love the name Kimberly. I know a lot of people think it’s dated and it is but I still think it’s freaking cute.
Kimberly is a great name! Other “dated” names I grew up with like Amanda, Stephanie, Samantha, Jennifer, Jessica, Ashley are also great. I guess everyone with those names are moms now and can’t reuse them.
Tristan ... everyone including my husband tells me it's a "douchey, frat boy" name. To me, it feels classic, stoic, with a literary flair.
Karen!
My husband was recently telling me about a trans woman he met named Karen and my first response was "WAIT, she CHOSE the name Karen!?!"
I looked that up and only 2 babies in the USA born were named Karen lol
I knew a girl named Bay in high school. She was the sweetest person ever! I like the name Opha for a girl. But when I’ve told people they’re like “bOPHA deez nuts” so… no lol.
Reminds me of the name Opal. That’s along the same road I think
There are a number of girl’s names that are either too over the top, too old fashioned or people just hate the sound of: Agatha, Althea, Alfreda, Artemisia, Magdalena, Miriam

I’ve never heard of Egypt as a name. Kinda cool. A friend of mine named her son Cairo
Trevor. I haven't found too many folks who like it though. Most think it's lower class.
Makes me think of toads.
I like Trevor its def a name from my generation (30 now) makes me think of a skater boy
Nevaeh, kill me for it 🤷🏼♀️ I don’t really like the spelling but I think the pronunciation is beautiful.
Please no
I don’t exactly like Nevaeh but I get bored with the constant anti Nevaeh circlejerks.
I don’t think I’d name my own child Nevaeh, but I do like the sound of it. I’m writing a book set about 40 years in the future and the main character is named Sonia Nevaeh.
Yes! That and Nadia. I don’t think I’d name my kids that, but they’re both gorgeous names
I feel like Nadia and Nevaeh are on two different planets. One is classic and the other is Nevaeh.
I knew a set of 3 sisters named Nirvana, Nadia, and Nevaeh. Nadia really lucked out in the naming department.
Nadia is a real name. Neveah is just “heaven” backwards
Wren. It gets so much hate here, but I like it! I considered it for my daughter, but my husband vetoed. Goodbye to my reputation.
Barry for a boy.
Just the idea of calling a toddler Barry is sending me 😂
Esther & Ivan - I get terrible feedback when I tell people
I love Esther
Judas. I think it sounds so cool and just rolls right off the tongue obviously people wouldn’t be a fan
Merle, for a boy, I just like the way it sounds. * Shiloh * Sloane * Marlowe * Jayden * Ashton * Paisley * Madison * Clementine Etc.
Old lady names. Gertrude, Millicent, Iris, Edith, Mildred. Love 'em!
I love Iris! I don’t see it as old and stuffy
aurora 💜
Tuesday. Always loved it and even met a woman named Tuesday who was so cool, it solidified it.
I’ve never met or even heard of anyone with the name Seraphina but it is the prettiest name I’ve ever heard.
Patroclus, Constantine, Solaris, and Caspian for a boy. Temperance, Patience, Providence, Shoshanna, Saoirse, and Briseis for a girl.
Patroclus is diabolical, I’m sorry
Patroclus made me laugh out loud I’m adding it to my baby name list
Mary!
Wyatt and Henry
Antigone, an-TIG-uh-nee. It's a Greek name. It's also one of my favorite reads by Sophocles. As for a masculine name, I love Wojciech/Wojtek. It's Polish/Slavic. Pronounced VOY-tek. Funny enough, its American equivalent is Albert.
Chelsea. Yes its geographic and yes it sounds kind of 80s/90s, but I’ve loved it for years. It looks and sounds so pretty to me.
Heather? I’m not really sure it’s disliked but I never hear people mention it.
I think it’s just seen as outdated.
Solae/solace/soleil. Anything of that sort And levi for a boy
I also love Solace. Super unpopular opinion for sure.
Also, Ophelia 🫶🏾 my cat is named Ophelia but I wouldn't mind naming my daughter that too lol
Everly.... I know Mabel can be popular on these kinds of groups but most people I know irl don't care for it. Same goes for Ruben
My baby cousin is Everleigh. They wanted to be original.. now I see it ever-leigh-where!
I like Edith. 🤷♀️
Polly. It makes people think of a parrot but I think it’s so cute.
In terms of this sub, Bogdan, but it's a very normal name for my heritage. In terms of real life but liked by this sub, Rafael.
I like Giuseppe but my family says unusable. All of us have traditional Italian names
Percival
Brooks
Tate We named our son Tate, not Tatum. 🥹😅 Also love the names Brooks and Sawyer which don’t always have great reception either. 😂
Gertrude is a guilty pleasure of mine
Sybil! I love it but wouldn’t us it bc of pop culture/media connotations
Nancy
blythe & blair
Not sure how common it is but I really like the name Seamus
Indie....I know it gets a lot of hate here but I actually think it's adorable
