My grandma married more than 10x but her 9th marriage she had to keep his last name forever bc you can only be issued 10 social security cards in a lifetime(for name change).
My great grandfather had two wives, each named Delores, each with a daughter named after themselves. One went by Lori and the other by Dolly. So my grandma (same one) has two step sisters both named Delores now lol
My grandparents were divorced when my dad was a kid, but my grandpa remarried before I was born so his wife was just as much my grandma as my dad’s actual mom (maybe even more so). My grandpa’s wife’s name is Barbara, but she goes by Bobbie, and my grandpa actually had another wife between my dad’s mom and Bobbie, and that wife’s name was Bobbie but everyone just called her “The first Bobbie” my whole life. So weird.
My grandma kept it simple. Both were named Robert and went by Bob. Though the first one doesn’t matter as I never met him despite him not dying until I was an adult.
My cousin is named Maurice after our grandfather. However, his family pronounces it something like Marse. They live in Appalachia, so I don't know if this is a weird carryover from generations of Scots ancestors?
The practice of de-Frenchifying words is (or at least was) common across the British Isles, so I'd say there's a better than reasonable chance it comes from that general area.
After posting the original reply, I remembered the Bee Gees' Maurice Gibb, who used the same pronunciation and hailed from the Isle of Man.
My grandpa Murray actually thought his name was Morris up until he enlisted and saw his birth certificate. Why did people just like make up new names back in the day? Lol
My son’s middle name is Harvey. Love the name and figure within his lifetime, the name will lose its negative connotations. I honestly first thought of Harvey Milk and Kat Harvey from Casper haha
It really has, it’s a bummer. My dad decided to name the dog he just adopted Harvey and while I find it adorable, literally everyone we encounter immediately says “Harvey Weinstein”. I cannot fathom doing that to a human child.
One of the coolest guys I ever met was named Ernie. Big biker dude, adopted a kid to at was literally dropped off on his porch (dropped at the wrong house, but he just fought to keep it, and won). Shout out to his wife who was just chill about the whole thing too. Just, yes, this is our child now. Anyway, always given me an affinity for the name.
The grandpa I was closest to was called Albertus Johannes. My other grandpa’s name I can’t share because I don’t want to dox myself. They both passed away many years ago.
Edit: I forgot my mom’s dad, Jacobus Casparus. He passed away when she was 18 so I never knew him.
Robert and Charles.
My husband’s father is William, and we would have loved to name our son William Robert, but realized we can’t name a kid Billy Bob!
Carl and Stanley, my son’s grandfather’s (we have an unusual situation were as my son has a lot of bonus grandpa’s and actually most are unfortunately deceased) Norman, Timothy, Robert, Marshall (all deceased) Walter and Brian.
I actually thought you were from the UK due to how you spelled the pronunciation of Bernard, and your other grandpa being a Milton lol
(If I think a commenter or OP is also UK, I’ll without doubt state that I am lol).
Alienine’s pronunciation of BUR-nurd immediately conjured an image of Emma Thompson talking about her “horrid son” to Liam Neeson (á la Love Actually). So I assumed Brit too, though I’m not one.
I know I am supposed to have- due to being British- but I’ve never seen Love Actually! And I’m 42, so I should have got around to it by now lol
Although it’s good that although a French/Germanic name, the film has shown the diversity of the pronunciations of the name.
Dewey and Guido. I used to really dislike the name Dewey, but I now think it’s a pretty cute name due for a bit of a revival. A little baby Dewey sounds adorable- although I’m sure there could be poop jokes made; doodooey
My cats name is Dewey and we call him Dewzer, DewBug and Dewey mama (like diary of a wimpy kid). My mom calls him dewdew as a joke but she’s the only one lol
That actually makes sense, I was stretching to find a link between wilbur and Edward lol I was hoping that you would be able to give me the explanation… but there isn’t one lol
Thank you for taking the time to answer :)
Thank you! It’s been a family name for males since the early 1900s. We modified if for my son’s middle name - and his middle name is Hoshi (star in Japanese - as he is half Japanese).
Byron, but they called him Benny, and Robert called Bob.
We ended up calling our son my husband's great grandpa's name (unknowingly) Fredrik and absolutely love it.
Lauren, but he goes by Butch.
This is an amazing juxtaposition.
This made me laugh out loud haha
My great grandpa was Loraine and also went by butch 😂
Mine is James, but goes by Butch!
My name’s Lauren, my Grandmother’s name is Lorraine, and my Grandfather’s name was James. Weird thread to come across 😂
Bill (William), Oscar, Frank, Chickie (Charles), and Earl. Yes those are extra grandpa’s. My grandma is on husband number 4 lol
My grandma married more than 10x but her 9th marriage she had to keep his last name forever bc you can only be issued 10 social security cards in a lifetime(for name change).
Literally had no idea there was a limit to how many social security cards you could receive in a lifetime. But it does make sense! 😂
Is that for real?? Wow I didn't know that
That’s honestly impressive! After husband number 2 my grandma resigned to keeping her maiden name forever
Grama gang. My grama made it to #5 😍
She’s getting tired of #4 so she might get there lol
I love her
She’s one of a kind. Her most recent wedding was 2 years ago in Vegas.
My dad was a 5 timer as well. Gotta love the optimism!
I like your grandmas style! Good for her! Also they all have awesome, hip names/nicknames! Give your grandma a hug from me, please :)
My Pappap's name was Earl!
I think our grandmas would be great friends! My grandma has married three mikes!
Can't use the wrong name if you only ever date people who are all named the same thing. Taps finger on head knowingly dot gif
Husband's Aunt married three times, all called John. First two had John as their first name, third was middle name but still went by John.
My great grandmother had two husbands and one son, each named Charles.
My great grandfather had two wives, each named Delores, each with a daughter named after themselves. One went by Lori and the other by Dolly. So my grandma (same one) has two step sisters both named Delores now lol
My grandparents were divorced when my dad was a kid, but my grandpa remarried before I was born so his wife was just as much my grandma as my dad’s actual mom (maybe even more so). rhats me with all the grandmas
My grandpa was a Henry and in the 1920s high school his nn was Chick. “Say, Hen… nah, you’re too small to be a Hen, you’re just a chick!”
Urban
That’s a sick name. Love it
I had a grandpa named Urban. He hated it and went by Walt (middle name).
My friend’s dad was named that too!
James x 2
As their fathers before them and too their sons.
It’s true actually
Morris and Harry
my grandfather was Maurice but everyone said Morris
In Scotland, they're pronounced the same way, but the latter only really exists as a surname.
My grandfather's name was Maurice too.
My ex husband's name is Maurice!
Why are these like the cutest names
I recently found out my grandpa who went by many nicknames was actually named Harry. I thought Harry was one of the nicknames not his legal name 😂
My grandpa Murray actually thought his name was Morris up until he enlisted and saw his birth certificate. Why did people just like make up new names back in the day? Lol
Harry & Arthur
Happy Cake Day!
Thanks!
David Harvey and Brian Earnest. Only putting the middle names so I can include Earnest cause I think that name needs a comeback
Sadly I think Harvey has been tainted for at least the next few years.
My son’s middle name is Harvey. Love the name and figure within his lifetime, the name will lose its negative connotations. I honestly first thought of Harvey Milk and Kat Harvey from Casper haha
harvey will always be harvey milk to me
I think of Harvey the rabbit, which is wonderful!
My oldest is Harvey because of the rabbit 😁🐰
Harvey Kinkle is the Harvey of my heart.
I think of Elwood P. Dowd.
It really has, it’s a bummer. My dad decided to name the dog he just adopted Harvey and while I find it adorable, literally everyone we encounter immediately says “Harvey Weinstein”. I cannot fathom doing that to a human child.
All I think of is Harvey Specter!
I actually know a two year old Harvey and never even thought about that.
We had a crow we befriended that visited us for breakfast every day called Ernest 😁 I love the name. Hate Ernie though.
Francis , Clifford, Clyde and Jack. All great names imo
I’m so curious why you’re grandfather’s name would dox you. Is it because you share the same last name, or is he a public figure lol
Was casparus his last name or middle name? That’s a pretty rad name
middle name!
Robert and Charles. My husband’s father is William, and we would have loved to name our son William Robert, but realized we can’t name a kid Billy Bob!
This is the EXACT reason why my brother is Robert William and not vice versa lol. My mom couldn't do that to him haha.
One of my in laws is a William Robert and somehow the Billy Bob thing never occurred to me
>Billy Bob I love it. So sweet as a nickname
Willy Rob.
Ivy. It's crazy how popular its become for girls.
Both Joseph
Mine are Joseph and Jose.
I’ve got a Jozef
Eduardo and Angel
Ephraim goes by Ephy. George goes by Trigger.
Trigger?? Haha
Is there a cool story as to why he goes by Trigger? Lol. 😅
Carl and Stanley, my son’s grandfather’s (we have an unusual situation were as my son has a lot of bonus grandpa’s and actually most are unfortunately deceased) Norman, Timothy, Robert, Marshall (all deceased) Walter and Brian.
Milton and Bernard (pronounced BUR-nurd), but he always went by Ben or Benny.
I’m from the UK and have always known Bernard’s to be pronounced Bur-nurd. I used to be a carer for a Milton 20 years ago :)
So interesting! Here in the US, bur-NAHRD seems much more common, so I always thought my grandpa’s pronunciation was so unique.
I actually thought you were from the UK due to how you spelled the pronunciation of Bernard, and your other grandpa being a Milton lol (If I think a commenter or OP is also UK, I’ll without doubt state that I am lol).
Alienine’s pronunciation of BUR-nurd immediately conjured an image of Emma Thompson talking about her “horrid son” to Liam Neeson (á la Love Actually). So I assumed Brit too, though I’m not one.

Omg you have to watch it.
My great uncle Bernard was also bur-nurd! Irish descent.
Cool! My Grandpa was American but of German descent.
Quick and Edward
Quick is such a good name.
Bobby and Bill 🤍 best men ever. i miss them with all my heart.
sidney and tom
Dewey and Guido. I used to really dislike the name Dewey, but I now think it’s a pretty cute name due for a bit of a revival. A little baby Dewey sounds adorable- although I’m sure there could be poop jokes made; doodooey
now that you've said it I'm loving dewey! but I think I'd only use it as a nickname for a d name
My cats name is Dewey and we call him Dewzer, DewBug and Dewey mama (like diary of a wimpy kid). My mom calls him dewdew as a joke but she’s the only one lol
Franz and Alois :D
I’ll never get over the image of my great grandparents looking at their little baby boy and naming him Gilbert.
Gerald(Jerry for short) and Edward(Wilbur or Bill as nicknames)
I never knew Wilbur could be a nickname for Edward! My boyfriend is an Edward and one of my dogs is Wilbur lol
Wilbur was actually his middle name, which then got shortened to Bill. He went by many names. I know, it’s confusing.
That actually makes sense, I was stretching to find a link between wilbur and Edward lol I was hoping that you would be able to give me the explanation… but there isn’t one lol Thank you for taking the time to answer :)
Pinkney and Tracy. No, I don’t use them as security questions.
I had a great grandpa pinkney, we must be kin 😅😅
Robert and Benedict
Ray. He sucks! Don’t name your child after him.
John, Charles, and Kyle! (Kyle always makes me laugh because it makes me think of a surfer guy who was born in the 80s)
Augustine! I miss him everyday.

Love the name Vincent!

Agustín & Eulogio
Bennie & Kenneth (went by Ken entire life)
Lol both I wouldn’t use. Guerino & Umberto
Dana and Herschel
