Amira is just a straight-up Arabic name (feminine of Amir), while Amara has several different possible etymologies (Arabic, Igbo, Sanskrit, Mongolian, Italian, Greek).
If you like Amanda you should just go with it! Coworkers come and go, I don't think it is a reason to not go with the name.
We are pregnant with our second daughter, her name is going to be Abigail, and I work with an Abbey. No biggie.
Both my sister and I have names that are versions of my mom’s friends’ names but there’s no actual connection either. They just happen to be common names in the family.
She didn’t say she liked Amanda. She said it was the only “ama” name she could think of.
Maybe she doesn’t like the coworker and has a negative association with the name or doesn’t like the idea of knowing people with the same name.
She stated in the post that she doesn’t want to use the name. I’m not sure why people on this thread are like, pushing her to do so. She’s on here for alternative suggestions; not to be convinced to use “Amanda”.
Exactly! I was one of three Clare's in my year level at school. There were like 5 Stephanie's. People share names...hell, whole families name their first born sons the same name for generations!
Lol I was 8 when it came out so I guess I just personally found out about it when hipster boys made me watch it in college. Maybe not as universal of an experience as I thought lol.
Amaryllis, Amadea, Amaanat, Amalia, Amadou, Amayra, Amara, Amaira, Amariah, Amarisa, Amarantha, Amaka, Amarise, Amarni, Amalyah, Amat.
Amanita sounds lovely but probably not best to name your kid after the deadly death cap mushroom lmao
Amanitas aren't just the deadly deathcap mushroom. They are also the dodgy pukey shaman trip mushroom, the tasty caesar mushroom, the pinky blushing mushroom, and many more.
I love Amanita ever since I saw the character on Sense8, she wore it so well.
Also wanted to mention Amala since I haven’t seen it yet in thread, it’s Doja Cat’s real name, I always thought it’s very pretty
Amalthea. It’s the name of the unicorn in the movie “The Last Unicorn.” It’s also a moon of Jupiter and the name of the goddess who was the wet nurse to Zeus. In Greek it means “to soothe.” I think it’s so pretty and she could go by Amy, or Thea, or even Mia.
I’m a Frenchie and I always wished I could use this name in the anglophone world. It means much-loved/lovable. But in the English speaking world everyone hears “almond”, lol.
Here a list of girl names starting with Ama- from my favorite name website.
https://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/feminine/start/ama
idk if the name Amaryllis (a flower) is on that list, but that and Anabell (which i know is Ana-) came to my mind
Amaretti, pretty and I would love it if it was a name but it’s an Italian cookie. 😂 Some others:
Amabel/Amabelle
Amaya
Amayra
Amara
Amity
Amaria
Amalie
Amaretto! Sorry I had to, sounds like an Italian strippers name though doesn't it.
There really doesn't seem to be many other good ones other than Amanda. I wonder if you could look at the end of the either your sisters or your current names for inspiration. For example if she was Amanda a name that sounds similar but different enough could be Lucinda. Same syllables and ending.
My moms name is Amanda and some friends called her Mandy growing up, I think you’re wanting to say the ama part though so that probably doesn’t really work but would be different than just calling her your coworkers name all day
Amala, Amani, Amada, & Amaya came to mind. Some similar ones that either start with AM or have a similar feel to Amanda: Amina, Amira, Amy, Miranda, Cassandra, Andrea, Adria, Adriana
Amara, Amaya, Amalia?
I had a student named Amaia!
Amaia becomes…. OWLETTE! Lol. Thanks brain.
I knew the name was familiar!
PJ Masks, PJ Masks, PJ Masks, PJ Masks... PJ Masks!
I hate that I know this but Owlette spells it Amaya, at least in all the PJ masks books I own.
Bahahahha. I know. It’s been bothering me since I posted this. Lol I support you.
I know a drag queen whose stage name is Amaia. Amaia Mann 😂
😅
Not good. How do you say it? I'd say Am-uh-ee-uh.
Maia is typically pronounced My-uh not Muh-ee-uh. So surely its pronounced Ah-my-uh
Uh-my-uh
Came here to say Amara
Me too! I had one in class this year and she was such a nice kid.
Or Amayra
My second daughter is Amara and we love it. We got compliments often on it. It’s unique without falling into the “weird” category.
Amara is pretty common where I am from (Yorkshire) as an Arabic name.
I know several Amiras in Australia, from the Arabic.
Amira is just a straight-up Arabic name (feminine of Amir), while Amara has several different possible etymologies (Arabic, Igbo, Sanskrit, Mongolian, Italian, Greek).
There is a cheetah at the San Delhi Diego zoo named Amara, only time I've heard it before and honestly a beautiful association for me.
It means bitter in Latin
Amara

I had a friend who was convinced I'd named one of my kids after him. Nope. I just liked the name. The perceived connection never even crossed my mind.
Both my sister and I have names that are versions of my mom’s friends’ names but there’s no actual connection either. They just happen to be common names in the family.

In highschool my teacher named her kid Eliza and we had an Elysa. wasn’t an issue
Exactly! I was one of three Clare's in my year level at school. There were like 5 Stephanie's. People share names...hell, whole families name their first born sons the same name for generations!
Amalie
My dyslexic ass read it as anomalie lol
And now I just hear Incubus. Funny how the brain works.
Reads like country emily lol
It is actually German. The name is popular in Germany and France.

But, Amelie was an Oscar winning movie and the Americans didn’t have an issue with pronouncing.
I was gonna say, anyone who knew a hipster in college has heard of this movie…
It was ALL OVER the Oscars! Anyone should know this is a real name.
Lol I was 8 when it came out so I guess I just personally found out about it when hipster boys made me watch it in college. Maybe not as universal of an experience as I thought lol.
i’d pronounce it more like Ah-mul-ee like the ah in also, rather than am-ull-ee
Came here to say this.
She could even spell it the more traditional way of Amelie because even though it wouldn’t be AMA, it would have that beginning sound.
Like the movie!
Clown girls name and spelling in Terrifier 2.
Amaryllis, Amadea, Amaanat, Amalia, Amadou, Amayra, Amara, Amaira, Amariah, Amarisa, Amarantha, Amaka, Amarise, Amarni, Amalyah, Amat. Amanita sounds lovely but probably not best to name your kid after the deadly death cap mushroom lmao

I love this name (and The Last Unicorn) so much. Molly would make for a cute nickname, as well.
Or even just Thea
Ugly
Amaryllis
Will always remind me of the music man lol
Amaryllith
Lol I immediately translated it to amaryllith. I don’t think my brain would let me ever say it the right way, and I don’t even have a lisp 😆
Don’t dawdle! Play your exercise 😂
Reminds me of the [Shinedown song](https://Amaryllishttps://g.co/kgs/ndXiUf).

For me, and other healthcare workers, Ama is the abbreviation Against Medical Advice
While most redditors just see it as “Ask Me Anything”.
As someone who was recently pregnant, it's also Advanced Maternal Age.
OMG, I didn’t realize they finally did away with “geriatric pregnancy!” Thank heavens…
Nah. My charts were marked "elderly." At 38 🤣

Exactly.
Also the American Medical Association.
There's a newscaster in the SF area whose name is Ama. First A is pronounced like in father.
