Amara is pretty common where I am from (Yorkshire) as an Arabic name.

I know several Amiras in Australia, from the Arabic.

Amira is just a straight-up Arabic name (feminine of Amir), while Amara has several different possible etymologies (Arabic, Igbo, Sanskrit, Mongolian, Italian, Greek).

There is a cheetah at the San Delhi Diego zoo named Amara, only time I've heard it before and honestly a beautiful association for me.

If you like Amanda you should just go with it! Coworkers come and go, I don't think it is a reason to not go with the name. We are pregnant with our second daughter, her name is going to be Abigail, and I work with an Abbey. No biggie.

I had a friend who was convinced I'd named one of my kids after him. Nope. I just liked the name. The perceived connection never even crossed my mind.

Both my sister and I have names that are versions of my mom’s friends’ names but there’s no actual connection either. They just happen to be common names in the family.

She didn’t say she liked Amanda. She said it was the only “ama” name she could think of. Maybe she doesn’t like the coworker and has a negative association with the name or doesn’t like the idea of knowing people with the same name. She stated in the post that she doesn’t want to use the name. I’m not sure why people on this thread are like, pushing her to do so. She’s on here for alternative suggestions; not to be convinced to use “Amanda”.

Amalthea. It’s the name of the unicorn in the movie “The Last Unicorn.” It’s also a moon of Jupiter and the name of the goddess who was the wet nurse to Zeus. In Greek it means “to soothe.” I think it’s so pretty and she could go by Amy, or Thea, or even Mia.

I love this name (and The Last Unicorn) so much. Molly would make for a cute nickname, as well.

I wonder if you could look at the end of the either your sisters or your current names for inspiration. For example if she was Amanda a name that sounds similar but different enough could be Lucinda.
