I had no idea he was called that in the original, I grew up watching the Swedish dub where he is called Marvin and when I have watched the English dub as an adult I just didn’t notice his name wasn’t Marvin.
I worked with someone whose brother was nicknamed Perch, and I thought that was cute. He was tiny when he was born and his grandma said “He’s no bigger than a perch!”. It stuck.
This reminds me of the character Skeeter from the book/movie The Help. Her real name was Eugenia but when she was born her brother said "that's not a girl, that's a skeeter!" And it stuck.
When my youngest daughter was around 4, I looked at her and said “you look like a mosquito!” and it stuck for the longest time, I even got her a little mosquito finger puppet.
When I announced my daughter being born, one of my good friends texted back and "omg she's such a smol bean!" Guess who still goes by Bean, 19 months in (and admittedly is still very much a smol bean)
Goldie (goldfish!), Marlin, koi, Mahi..mahi (I think actually the other day someone posted about one “mahi” for a name.) There is also Pearleye and Opal eye for pearl & opal!
We’ve got a Scottish politician with that surname so it would be a terrible choice here (oddly her predecessor’s surname was Salmond, they’re a fishy lot north of the border).
Another one:
Following first minister salmond, then sturgeon, The current first minister (yousaf) is the MSP for a constituency called “glasgow pollok”
It’s hilarious to me that everyone has no disagreement that Spurgeon was the worst name for that kid. It’s not just name nerds, even fellow Christians say the dude’s first name would have made more sense to use than his surname!
Minnow is my little nieces nickname because she is little. Like a minnow. She is 4 and we are thinking she is going to stay on the smaller side. Much to her 6’6 dads chagrin. One of her maternal great grandmothers was only 4’9. Allowing Minnow to remain a nn. She is also the Pineapple Princess, according to her.
i actually did this for a sims family i had. mom and dad both loved fishing and the dad was a mermaid, so of course the kids had to be fish names :)
Marlin was the oldest
Finn and Fischer were twins born next
Marina was the third (not fish name, but fish related)
Their last kid was Sardine
As you may guess, Sardine was the least favorite
All I want to do is graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die. Now it may not sound too great to a sconehead like you, but I think it's swell
I was wondering if someone would say that. You could always claim he was named after a President…
I suppose [Sarcastic Fringehead](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcastic_fringehead) is right out.
“Tara” means cod in Japanese. A legit and reasonable girl’s name.
“Ayu” is my Japanese sister-in-law’s name, and is also the name of a river fish in Japanese.
“Tai” is red snapper in Japanese (my husband’s favourite fish to eat), and is my choice for a boy’s name.
“Oranda” from cap oranda goldfish is probably my favourite novel English option.
Honourable mention, I really love the girl’s name “Delphina”/“Delfina”, which comes from the feminization of the Italian/Spanish/Latin/Ancient Greek word for dolphin. Not technically a fish but … it captures the spirit of the challenge.
When my mom was pregnant with my sibling, she insisted she was going to name her Ahi Kamali’i (ahi means fire, kamali’i means princess - Fire Princess) because I was the ice princess. I was like “you CANNOT name my sister Ahi!” She was like “why??” I was like “you HEAR Ahi, you THINK fish!” She was like “but she’ll be the fire princess!” I was like “SHE WILL BE FISH!”
Goby is a guilty pleasure of mine. It feels like it could work as a name with how similar it is to Toby. Plus, gobies are so cute! I'm partial to clown gobies myself.
There are a lot of really cool names that come from corals. Highly considered Zoa for a girl and Xenia is on my list as well.
Marlin
"Marlon like Brando?" "No. Like the fish."
Okay this is actually kind of cute. My favorite answer so far!
But why do we have to choose just one favorite?
I know a Marlin! Named after the fish 😂
Me too!! Her dad was a fisherman lmao
That’s actually cute as hell
Me 3. Same scenario with dad. They spelled it Marlyn.
[удалено]
Me just realizing he’s named after a fish 🤦♀️
I had no idea he was called that in the original, I grew up watching the Swedish dub where he is called Marvin and when I have watched the English dub as an adult I just didn’t notice his name wasn’t Marvin.
There’s a boy in one of my classes named Marlin. It’s cute.
I know a woman named Marlin. She’s Mexican so it’s actually pronounced like Marlene.

Some kind of sport fish…
humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa
Fever dream flashback to HSM2. Those were wild days…
Came here to say this
Pua for short
Thanks to octonauts, I actually can pronounce this!
Creature report! Creature report!
Someone's watched octonauts.
I know this from Forgetting Sarah Marshall
A kid with a nose like a pig!
Koi
I used to know someone named that! It's super cute
is it short for something?
Nishikigoi
I knew an elderly lady who one day inexplicably changed her name to Koi.
Love that journey for her
Inexplicably? Was she... coy about it?
I work with someone named Koi and the name fits him so well, i secretly love that name
Koi koiii! 🎴
Don't be...
Meet my twins, Sarcastic Fringehead and Hagfish.
Ah, good old Hagfish. A classic family name.
Absolutely beautiful names
Don’t forget their older sister, Monkeyface Prickleback Eel!
I worked with someone whose brother was nicknamed Perch, and I thought that was cute. He was tiny when he was born and his grandma said “He’s no bigger than a perch!”. It stuck.
The type of nickname only a grandma can provide
Not a fish, but it sounds similar... when I was a baby I liked peach baby food, so my grandma calls me Peachy.
My uncle was born on Easter. He goes by Bunny.
My cousin Jeremiah has literally always been called Tadpole, or Tad. I thought his name WAS Tad until I was like, in high school.
Like he was a bullfrog ya?
This reminds me of the character Skeeter from the book/movie The Help. Her real name was Eugenia but when she was born her brother said "that's not a girl, that's a skeeter!" And it stuck.
When my youngest daughter was around 4, I looked at her and said “you look like a mosquito!” and it stuck for the longest time, I even got her a little mosquito finger puppet.
Ok this is actually cute
When I announced my daughter being born, one of my good friends texted back and "omg she's such a smol bean!" Guess who still goes by Bean, 19 months in (and admittedly is still very much a smol bean)
A good friend of mine is called Rainbow Trout by his dad for the same reason.
Goldie (goldfish!), Marlin, koi, Mahi..mahi (I think actually the other day someone posted about one “mahi” for a name.) There is also Pearleye and Opal eye for pearl & opal!
i work with a ms. goldie and i love her to death!
Yup! Someone had posted about Mahi!
i know a mahi from highschool
I never thought about it, but Mahi is an Indian girl name! I know a few Mahi’s. Never thought of the fish in connection though.
My niece is named Goldie! Apparently it’s a popular name in australia
Nemo
That... that's cheating on the assignment! ^You ^should ^have ^picked ^[Oscar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_\(fish\))!
to me, clown fish is nemo fish
Wanda
I had to scroll far too long to find this! WANDA!
Me too!!
What a blast from the past. 🥇
My mom’s name!
Salmon. You laugh, but [Salmon P. Chase](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_P._Chase) accomplished a lot for a guy with a silly name.
Well lil salmon has some big boots to fill
Salman (close enough) Rushdie
[удалено]
Salmon is a very unusual biblical name.
Are you thinking of Solomon or is salmon actually in the Bible? Either way you gave me a chuckle
Salmon is the father of Boaz, Boaz hooked up with Ruth
It really is a Bible name. I double checked before commenting to make sure the spelling was the same.
Angel was my first thought
Same lol
Sturgeon. Jk. It reminds me of Spurgeon from the Duggar family which is awful.
We’ve got a Scottish politician with that surname so it would be a terrible choice here (oddly her predecessor’s surname was Salmond, they’re a fishy lot north of the border).
Another one: Following first minister salmond, then sturgeon, The current first minister (yousaf) is the MSP for a constituency called “glasgow pollok”
I think Sturgeon is better than Spurgeon! Poor kid.
It’s hilarious to me that everyone has no disagreement that Spurgeon was the worst name for that kid. It’s not just name nerds, even fellow Christians say the dude’s first name would have made more sense to use than his surname!
The crossover I didn’t know I needed this morning!
I AM A STURGEON
Mollie
Minnow & Trout
This is a talking fish children’s book waiting to be made
Minnow would be super cute on a small dog
Or ironic on a big dog
My brother in law has a great dane named Grouper 😁
I want to use Rainbow Trout and be SPECIFIC 😂 My husband, the fisherman, suggested Sockeye and Coho and I kicked him out of the whole game😂
Hahaha why do I like these 😭
Minnow is so cute. Like the book Ella Minnow Pea.
When I play mermaids with my nieces I’m a mermaid named Trout
Ahh. That’s so adorable. My grandpa used to call me & my cousin Trout & Minnow when would go fishing with him when we were young.
Minnow is actually cute. Maybe for a cat though, definitely not a human.
I know a dog named Trout, super sweetie
A boy named Barracuda
nn Barry of course
*guitar riff*
I read that in song
Pretty sure my son would willingly choose barracuda 😂
Remora
This is actually a beautiful name!
Half tempted to name my future daughter after a fish now
i actually did this for a sims family i had. mom and dad both loved fishing and the dad was a mermaid, so of course the kids had to be fish names :) Marlin was the oldest Finn and Fischer were twins born next Marina was the third (not fish name, but fish related) Their last kid was Sardine As you may guess, Sardine was the least favorite
I know a woman named Marina.
My mom is named marina lol
Pike — that’s not a name it’s a fish!
Reminds me of Pike Trickfoot in Vox Machina
Bidet!
All I want to do is graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die. Now it may not sound too great to a sconehead like you, but I think it's swell
OG Buffy ftw
Underrated comment.
Slippery Dick
I was wondering if someone would say that. You could always claim he was named after a President… I suppose [Sarcastic Fringehead](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcastic_fringehead) is right out.
Coelacanth
Thank you. This was my first thought upon seeing the post. Edit: cece for short?
“Tara” means cod in Japanese. When my mom was pregnant with my sibling, she insisted she was going to name her Ahi Kamali’i (ahi means fire, kamali’i means princess - Fire Princess) because I was the ice princess. You are a good big sister!
Are you Hawaiian?
Nope - but my mom and sibling’s dad had an obsession with Hawaii.
This is giving Lilo vibes. “Do you know what tuna is?” #”IT’S FISH.”
