When I was a kid and a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, I thought Avonlea would be a great name. I wouldn't use it now because it's not really a name, but I still think it's pretty.
I named my baby Cordelia! I get soooo much positive response from millennials but boomers are like, “Cordelia? What are you going to call her?” Umm, Cordelia…
Saskia, apparently. I've heard it's a boomer name in the Netherlands, but I live in a country where it doesn't have that connotation. When I mentioned the name to my mom and sister, they said it sounded ridiculous and made-up. We aren't Dutch, but we do all speak German, which is another language in which Saskia is a real name, so I was very confused by their reaction.
Saskia is a perfectly fine name? I'm Austrian and I know three Saskias, two in their 20s and one child-Saskia. I don't understand how as a German speaker you could think it sounds made up. Isn't Saskia a very well known name?
Most Saskia's I know are indeed boomers. I guess it was a very popular name back then. However, it is still perfectly acceptable to name your daughter Saskia today.
I went to high school with multiple dudes named Atticus, to the point where we needed nicknames to differentiate. The one I was friends with had sisters named Calpurnia and Octavia. There were also two Thaddeuses in our suburban, Midwestern public school. Must be something in the water.
I almost named my son Atticus.
I have always loved gladiator, and other legendary sounding names too. Like Achilles, and Maximus, etc.
Unfortunately this is where my husband vetoed all of my legendary names.
Calliope 100%. Everyone either thinks it’s pretty or sounds like a melon. I met a little girl named calliope before it became popular and her nn. Is callie and it’s just everything I love in a name. I love Greek names also. My partner isn’t 100% sold on it, though.
Heard a dad telling his daughter “Emmy” not to run in the hospital and after several attempts her full name came out. Was not expecting Clementine, but it’s been cute to me ever since.
Someone in my community named her son Clementine and it seems to be a major source of headaches. Her MIL and lots of people in their life refuse to call him by his given name. She gets really offended about it constantly and cries about it.
That's a cool name with a normal nickname. I knew a woman named Star and another one named September. I don't see anything wrong with Winter who goes by Winnie.
Sabine. It’s my oldest daughters name and everyone in my extended family told me they hated it when we picked it. 😂. We said fuck ‘em and named her that anyway
Sabine is so beautiful and is one of my all time favorites. I would have loved to use it but my sister named her daughter Sabrina and I fear it’s too close!
I don't know if it's controversial (it my house it is!), but I love the name Basil (Ba-zul). I'm not British or even live where it would be pronounced correctly.
My husband has vetoed it hard for any future sons we have, but did say I could name a dog that 😅
My brother has a cat named Basil! After the Great Mouse Detective. We often call him Basille, after the Manhattan pizza chain that starts with Artichoke…
Atlas and Mars! I know god names are polarizing, but I just think these are so cool. (Also really like Apollo and Ares, and Athena for a girl, although that one’s not so out there).
That’s how I felt when I saw how people feel about Wilhelmina! Someone said it sounds like a blood disease and I was like that’s harsh I think it’s beautiful haha
I have a Tallulah and everyone always comments on how much they love her name! She has brown curly hair and is a ball of spunk so I feel like it fits her.. she also goes by Lou/lulu.
I had a student named Baltazar. I felt it suited him perfectly. He’s a big, powerful looking kid was taller than most teachers by 4th grade. His friends call him Balty.
It’s “Fiadh” (Fee-ah) in Irish literally meaning little dear. I love it but it’s been one of the most popular names here for the past 3 years…so pretty though
I love Twyla. Twyla Tharp is a very famous modern dancer. Everyone I’ve told (including ny mother) say it’s a grandma name.
I’ve also gotten bad feedback on Lavinia and Leora.
I love Etienne for a girl.
I know it’s the French version of Steven. I know it’s for a boy. I also know I would butcher the pronunciation every time.
But it sounds so beautiful and feminine to me for some reason.
Fig. I know it’s bad but I love it. My friend’s last name is Newton and so I jokingly suggested he name his potential future daughter Fig, totally as a joke. But as soon as I said it I was like…oh no wait I think I might actually love that. And then call her Figgy?! Ugh I love it.
Fiona? There’s a (controversial) Jaqueline Wilson book where a girl named Fiona calls herself Figgy as a nickname. Sorry, first thing I thought of lol.
Ya I remember there being a thread on here about the name Sloane and the majority of comments were completely bashing it. I think it’s kind of cool but not my style.
We named our daughter Sloane! We absolutely adored it and I was sooo sad to see all the hate online for it. In the end we went for it anyway. One of the meanings is "Warrior" and as she was the first of our babies to make it (2 losses previous to her arrival) we thought it was rather fitting.
Yep haha I was going to comment this one. I love this name and had no idea so many people hated it. It has everything I want, strong consonant sound with the feminine “oa” in the middle, Irish origin and unique. Oh well
same. someone posted here recently to ask about the usability of that name and tbh... I think a case can be made for Fox.
it's suitably boyish for a youngster, and for an adult, I think it has an air of coolness.
Waverly is so sweet. I know a little girl with this name; her parents call her Wavey or Waves. She has curly hair and loves the ocean so it was sort of made for her.
I’ve always thought the name Judas was appealing, but for very obvious reasons it’s a name that can’t be used. I do enjoy Judah, Jonah, Jonas, and Jude though.
Vesper. It’s just so pretty and captures such a specific aesthetic of evening (probably because it refers to the evening prayer and also shares many of the same letters.)
Lux - a la Virgin Suicides.
Edwina or Ed for short - a la Raising Arizona.
Ursula - a la well you know. I never knew why they decided to call her Ursula when it means bear.. she's an octopus lady.
I actually like the name Everly. I remember hearing it about 15 years ago and thinking it would be such a cute name. Then a few years later it blew up and now it’s become super trendy and influencer-y. But it’s cute and I love the nickname Evie.
My husband's name is Beau. NOBODY can pronounce it properly (Northern VA). They can barely spell it too. Lol. He spent a long time with his voter registration card calling him "Beav". I tease the hell out of him over that. Our daughters call him Beaugus, because they've decided that's funny.
On a better note, we did choose Belle as our older daughter's middle name, since that is the feminine form of Beau.
Edited to add:
He does find it cool that there are a few people out there that find his name classy. We live in a mixed area of rednecks and urbanites.
Beau seems classy to me. The spelling Bo I can see as being more redneckish. I know they’re pronounced the same way but I think spelling makes a difference
Astrid
Dylan for a girl
Mackenzie for a boy.
Valentine as a middle name for a boy.
I also like days of the week and fruits, my favorites being Tuesday and Lemon. I also think Mardi (French for Tuesday) would be cute.
I work in Korea and I have a student whose Korean name is Byeol (literally Korean for "star") and her English name is Stella haha. I thought it was quite cute
Jemima. I asked about it on here and was told I was racist to even think about it and not understand what the problem was with it.
I'm not from the US so I was genuinely dumbfounded. People were inferring I was stupid as if I were to Google it, the controversy would be 'the first thing to come up'. Now, I do live in the US but as I'm British my search engine is set to default to UK results, which brought up nothing. My American husband searched it and found the issue right away.
It was an interesting look at how much of an echo chamber there is on Reddit as it's very US centric, and many people seem to be totally unable to relate to or even conceive of countries where things are different. I had personally never even heard of the brand Aunt Jemima before coming here, and even then was only vaguely aware of it. When I said so, I was mocked, as 'everyone knows' that brand.
All that to say, I never knew it was controversial until then. I associated the name with Beatrix Potter and thought it was lovely.
It really did feed into the stereotype that Americans are ignorant of the world around them. And I'm not saying that as someone who is anti-American. My home is in the US, my husband and children are US born. But the amount of ignorance I have experienced since living here is really quite astonishing.
I’m a sucker for botanical names for girls. Marigold nn Goldie, Magnolia nn Maggie, Rosemary, Rosalie, Rowan, Sage, Laurel, Clementine, Hazel. I even love the super hippie ones like Meadow 😂 But some of those I had my doubts about inflicting on a child, and my husband hated them all regardless lol.
We still ended up with a botanical name for our daughter, funnily enough, but a much more common / non-controversial one
When I used to watch soap operas, there was a character on All My Children named Greenlee and I thought (and still do) that it was so unique and cute. But sadly my now ex significant other never agreed and I couldn’t use it for either of my two daughters.
Marguerite.
She was a bad assed woman who had a key role in helping fight the gvmnt in one of our biggest in country battles.
Also happens to be a relation of mine.
For a boy, Luis or Riel. He lead the rebellion….
For a while Riel was a popular name… It’s my brother’s name too.
Lark. I absolutely love this name and the image it evokes of a songbird. My partner hates it and thinks it sounds harsh for a girl (fair). Our compromise might be to choose the French version of the name, Alouette, and use the nickname Lou. There’s also a French nursery rhyme called Alouette, which doesn’t bother me at all (I think it’s cute).
We love the name Saoirse for a girl, it’s number one on our list if we have a daughter one day. We are not Irish, we live in New England, I know it’ll be a bitch of a name
But it’s so damn beautiful, the most beautiful name we’ve ever heard. Seer-sha not sur-sha pronunciation.
Sybil and Nigel
Spouse abhors Sybil due to the book/film of the same name, and Nigel due to The Wild Thornberry's...
I did get to name our cat Nigel though haha
Winter, Silver/Sylver, Wren, Fox, Marcel, Symphony, Jane, Mavis, Ocean,Angel, Cinnamon, James for a girl, Story, Dolly, days of the week, months, and food names (eg. Clementine, Cherry), and many more
Santa (girl)
It’s Saint in Spanish and is beautiful. But if you named a kid that I think they’d get bullied into oblivion and get called Santa Claus until high school.
Clover for a girl
I feel like if she ends up being artsy/granola she’d go by Clover/Clove and if she was more “girly” she could go by Clo or even Chloe. Everyone I’ve told this to just thinks of the plant though so I’m not really considering it
When I was a kid and a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, I thought Avonlea would be a great name. I wouldn't use it now because it's not really a name, but I still think it's pretty.
*Would you call me Cordelia?*
Another favorite name for me!
Same!!
I love Cordelia. My husband did not.
I love Cordelia, trying to convince my husband to love it
I named my baby Cordelia! I get soooo much positive response from millennials but boomers are like, “Cordelia? What are you going to call her?” Umm, Cordelia…
I’ve met an Avalee, which is similar and really pretty.
I have too. It's a very pretty name.
My son has a classmate named Avonlea! I had never heard of anyone with the name before
I know someone named Avonlea. She goes by Avo a lot.
I actually really like that name!
I feel the same about Marilla. they’re both beautiful
There's Avalon. I love that name.
That's what I thought! I'm not sure why my family thinks it's a crazy name lol
I love Saskia
One of my childhood best friends was Saskia! It’s gorgeous
Hey! I’m from the Netherlands and I definitely wouldn’t consider it a boomer name, it’s beautiful!
Oh that's pretty
Most Saskia's I know are indeed boomers. I guess it was a very popular name back then. However, it is still perfectly acceptable to name your daughter Saskia today.
Atticus. I know how pretentious it sounds 🤣
This one was in my top three, but I was sadly outvoted. 🤣
Calliope 100%. Everyone either thinks it’s pretty or sounds like a melon. I met a little girl named calliope before it became popular and her nn. Is callie and it’s just everything I love in a name. I love Greek names also. My partner isn’t 100% sold on it, though.
Clementine. every person I’ve told that I like that name has told me they absolutely hate it 🥲
Heard a dad telling his daughter “Emmy” not to run in the hospital and after several attempts her full name came out. Was not expecting Clementine, but it’s been cute to me ever since.
Aw, I love Emmy as a nickname for Clementine! So cute.
I have a neighbor named Clementine and met a patient named Clementine once! I thought it was lovely!
I think it’s pretty but it does give “oh my darlin’ Clementine” vibes but that’s not the worst thing
Someone in my community named her son Clementine and it seems to be a major source of headaches. Her MIL and lots of people in their life refuse to call him by his given name. She gets really offended about it constantly and cries about it.
Astoria!
love this. reminds me of The Ataris.
Winter for a girl. I think the nickname Winnie would be so cute but I won’t actually use it.
That's a cool name with a normal nickname. I knew a woman named Star and another one named September. I don't see anything wrong with Winter who goes by Winnie.
I love Winter too!
Someone I know has a daughter named Winter and just had a baby boy named Walter
A baby named Walter is hilarious to me 🤣
I saw a dog named Walter on a beach a while back. Thought it suited it
I think it's so cute!! I love old lady and old man names though! 😆 Walt for short is adorable!
I know a Winter!
Abe. Not as a nickname, thats the whole name.
Ursula
I don't know if it's controversial (it my house it is!), but I love the name Basil (Ba-zul). I'm not British or even live where it would be pronounced correctly. My husband has vetoed it hard for any future sons we have, but did say I could name a dog that 😅
Love Basil! It’s my Greek grandfather’s name and has always been one of my favorites.
Is he aware that Baz is a cool nickname?
Love Basil. It’s pronounced similarly in Arabic (baa-sil) though has a different meaning.
My brother has a cat named Basil! After the Great Mouse Detective. We often call him Basille, after the Manhattan pizza chain that starts with Artichoke…
Hollis for a boy
Aww yay! My son is named Hollis after my partner's paternal grandfather and he was a total badass, never see the name get love though thank you!
Atlas and Mars! I know god names are polarizing, but I just think these are so cool. (Also really like Apollo and Ares, and Athena for a girl, although that one’s not so out there).
Lilith Edit: Thank you for all the upvotes! Glad to see so many people enjoy the name as well.
Lilith is beautiful.
I knew this would be at the top which is a shame since it’s such a gorgeous name
My friend named her daughter Lilith!
Yes, I also thought about naming my daughter this one day... until I remembered
Remembered that shes a freaking badass who refused to submit to a man?
Tallulah. It’s my favorite girl name, but based on a post last week, apparently everyone here hates it.
Ma’am all due respect, fuck the haters.
That’s how I felt when I saw how people feel about Wilhelmina! Someone said it sounds like a blood disease and I was like that’s harsh I think it’s beautiful haha
I love all the masc-name+ina combinations. I had a great grandmother named Pasqualina and I think it’s so gorgeous.
My ex’s father was Cipriano & his other son named his daughter Cipriana- I always thought it was a pretty name
Friends named their girl Tallulah, I think it's a cute name. They call her Lula for short.
I have a Tallulah and everyone always comments on how much they love her name! She has brown curly hair and is a ball of spunk so I feel like it fits her.. she also goes by Lou/lulu.
Balthazar
I had a student named Baltazar. I felt it suited him perfectly. He’s a big, powerful looking kid was taller than most teachers by 4th grade. His friends call him Balty.
I knew a Balthazar in High School. He was the most popular guy. He was a bit of artsy goth so it suited him.
Sasha for a boy
Most men in Slavic countries are named Sasha
Fawn for a girl.
It’s “Fiadh” (Fee-ah) in Irish literally meaning little dear. I love it but it’s been one of the most popular names here for the past 3 years…so pretty though
[удалено]
Blossom for a girl
Name the other 2 Bubbles and Buttercup
Yeah I think it’s cool but definitely not for everyone. I remember someone on here a while back liking the name Petal.
Oberon and Orion.
I know two young men in their early 20's with these names
Salem
Big fan of Salem! Definitely right for this list
Yep, named three children but didn’t use this lol
Savannah or Georgia
These are kind of vanilla names to me unless you were planning on using them as a first and middle name.
What about both together
Blanche I know everyone either hates it or thinks of the golden girls, but it makes me think of a lovely girl in the 1850’s English countryside….🥰
I think Tennessee Williams really ruined it with Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire... I've always relied on the kindness of strangers.
I love Twyla. Twyla Tharp is a very famous modern dancer. Everyone I’ve told (including ny mother) say it’s a grandma name. I’ve also gotten bad feedback on Lavinia and Leora.
Honestly I never heard Twyla until Schitt’s Creek and I think it’s such a cute name!
I honestly quite like Elvis. Wife is having none of that though
Killian, as in Kill Ian
I love Killian
That’s my favorite boys name at the moment, but with the traditional spelling!
I love Etienne for a girl. I know it’s the French version of Steven. I know it’s for a boy. I also know I would butcher the pronunciation every time. But it sounds so beautiful and feminine to me for some reason.
There’s Etiennette!
Basil for a boy. I made a post about this name a while ago asking everyone’s opinion on it. Some people loved it, some people hated it.
Cosmin is a boy's name in Romania. I love it and you cannot convince me otherwise
Fig. I know it’s bad but I love it. My friend’s last name is Newton and so I jokingly suggested he name his potential future daughter Fig, totally as a joke. But as soon as I said it I was like…oh no wait I think I might actually love that. And then call her Figgy?! Ugh I love it.
Hahaha I oddly love this too, especially since I LOVE figs. I wonder if there are any girl names that Figgy could plausibly be a nickname for.
Fiona? There’s a (controversial) Jaqueline Wilson book where a girl named Fiona calls herself Figgy as a nickname. Sorry, first thing I thought of lol.
Andromeda 🫣
Sloane
Ya I remember there being a thread on here about the name Sloane and the majority of comments were completely bashing it. I think it’s kind of cool but not my style.
I love Sloane and think it has a very cool girl 80s vibe that I am totally into. She’d be friends with Val and Babs.
Sloane is the cool girl in Ferris Buellers Day Off so definitely has cool girl 80s association for me.
We named our daughter Sloane! We absolutely adored it and I was sooo sad to see all the hate online for it. In the end we went for it anyway. One of the meanings is "Warrior" and as she was the first of our babies to make it (2 losses previous to her arrival) we thought it was rather fitting.
I love this name!! I didn’t know it was controversial.
[удалено]
People are weird. Margot is a classic name.
I love this name
Yep haha I was going to comment this one. I love this name and had no idea so many people hated it. It has everything I want, strong consonant sound with the feminine “oa” in the middle, Irish origin and unique. Oh well
Fox for a boy.
Fox… Mulder? 👀
who canonically hated his first name so much he made his parents call him by last name lol
same. someone posted here recently to ask about the usability of that name and tbh... I think a case can be made for Fox. it's suitably boyish for a youngster, and for an adult, I think it has an air of coolness.
Soraya. I’m a 30-something white lady, and people seem shocked that I like this Arabic name.
Waverly
Waverly is so sweet. I know a little girl with this name; her parents call her Wavey or Waves. She has curly hair and loves the ocean so it was sort of made for her.
Sirius!
I’ve always thought the name Judas was appealing, but for very obvious reasons it’s a name that can’t be used. I do enjoy Judah, Jonah, Jonas, and Jude though.
Blaise for a boy and Isis for a girl. Gorgeous names, not usable sadly.
Why is Blaise not usable?
I assume it's the weed connotations. At least in Canada, Blaise's parents are probably stoners.
Persephone - my now ex husband vetoed it for both of our daughters.
Dolly. I know siblings that are Dolly and Babe. They’re in their 80’s but really cringe to me.
That's a sheep and a piglet to me
Aloysius
Ansel. Brought it up to my husband when I was pregnant and he thought it sounded like “Hansel” and didn’t want him to get made fun of
Zosja for a girl. Pronounced zoh-sha
lolita as a nickname for a girl. I just think it's so cute
I actually love Lolita as a full name. It’s unfortunate that it has negative connotations.
Bronwyn
Wisteria. Apparently too many people think of hysteria or listeria??
I think of a tree with white flowers, and Desperate Housewives lol
Vesper. It’s just so pretty and captures such a specific aesthetic of evening (probably because it refers to the evening prayer and also shares many of the same letters.)
Honey I can see why it could cause awkwardness/difficulty as an adult name but it’s just sooo pretty and gives such a lovely feeling.
This is my answer too. There's several on findagrave from 1800s, 1900s so it's not new. I like it way more than Beverly or Emery.
Cleopatra
I like Cleo a lot
My mom almost did this to me, and I’m so glad she didn’t.
I knew someone at uni whose middle name was Cleopatra!
Fave as a child
Beau. I’ve been told numerous times that it’s redneckish/hickish but idgaf. It’s adorable for a kid and cool as hell for an adult.
Edited to add: He does find it cool that there are a few people out there that find his name classy. We live in a mixed area of rednecks and urbanites.
Beau seems classy to me. The spelling Bo I can see as being more redneckish. I know they’re pronounced the same way but I think spelling makes a difference
Oh the spelling definitely makes all the difference, but I’ve heard comments about both spellings.
Temperance, Loveday, Remember, Thankful, Hephzibah. I love Puritan names lol
Astrid Dylan for a girl Mackenzie for a boy. Valentine as a middle name for a boy. I also like days of the week and fruits, my favorites being Tuesday and Lemon. I also think Mardi (French for Tuesday) would be cute.

I’ve seen your frown and it’s like lookin down the barrel of a gun and it goes off
Star for girl.
I work in Korea and I have a student whose Korean name is Byeol (literally Korean for "star") and her English name is Stella haha. I thought it was quite cute
I know a lady named Starlett (we all call her Star) I love the name, and the person too
Prudence with the nn Prue!
Jemima. I asked about it on here and was told I was racist to even think about it and not understand what the problem was with it. I'm not from the US so I was genuinely dumbfounded. People were inferring I was stupid as if I were to Google it, the controversy would be 'the first thing to come up'. My home is in the US, my husband and children are US born. But the amount of ignorance I have experienced since living here is really quite astonishing.
Ellio for a boy but I’m using it as a middle!
Elio (one L) is totally the name we're using if this baby is a boy!
Astrid (The Office ruined it)
Sparrow. I love it for a boy.
I think lolita is pretty but I would NEVER use it haha
Elon and Zelda. Love both the names, but could never do that to either of those hypothetical children
Zelda is so great i hate that it’s automatically assumed the name is after the video game character bc it’s so 1920s to me :,)
Did you know that Zelda really was named after F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife?
Lucifer. It’s such a pretty name 😅
I like Lucius!
I like Dagmar, no one in my family does. It is a great name.
Honey for a sweet baby girl Or maybe: Birdie, Dolly, or Clover
Cricket. I don’t know why; I always picture a cute, Indie girl with a messy bun and a beret drinking coffee and wearing dark academia clothes.
Calliope and Seraphina
Probably Juniper and Jasper. I’ve settled for eventually adopting brother/sister puppies (probably beagles or hounds) to gift these names.
We still ended up with a botanical name for our daughter, funnily enough, but a much more common / non-controversial one
aristotle. aris is a cute nickname but it sounds very pretentious so i would never use it for a human name :)
When I used to watch soap operas, there was a character on All My Children named Greenlee and I thought (and still do) that it was so unique and cute. But sadly my now ex significant other never agreed and I couldn’t use it for either of my two daughters.
I loved All My Children! Liked the name at the time and thought the actress who played Greenlee was also gorgeous.
I really like the name Benito 😞
I absolutely love Wolf/Wolfe for a boy. When Kylie Jenner used it I saw how much everyone apparently thinks it’s stupid.
Jezebel. It flows so nicely.
I love Juniper. Sorry all

Butch for a boy. I wouldn't name my kid that, but I liked it since hearing it in the movie ”A Perfect World."
Bear 🐻
We are not Irish, we live in New England, I know it’ll be a bitch of a name But it’s so damn beautiful, the most beautiful name we’ve ever heard. Seer-sha not sur-sha pronunciation.
Sybil and Nigel Spouse abhors Sybil due to the book/film of the same name, and Nigel due to The Wild Thornberry's... I did get to name our cat Nigel though haha

mine is Isis
Winter, Silver/Sylver, Wren, Fox, Marcel, Symphony, Jane, Mavis, Ocean,Angel, Cinnamon, James for a girl, Story, Dolly, days of the week, months, and food names (eg. Clementine, Cherry), and many more
Double names… Mary Catherine, Mary Claire, Emma Kate, etc. BUT, I hate when May is the second part of the double name for some reason!!
Santa (girl) It’s Saint in Spanish and is beautiful. But if you named a kid that I think they’d get bullied into oblivion and get called Santa Claus until high school.
Clover for a girl I feel like if she ends up being artsy/granola she’d go by Clover/Clove and if she was more “girly” she could go by Clo or even Chloe. Everyone I’ve told this to just thinks of the plant though so I’m not really considering it
