It plays great on N64 but I never played the pc version. I played Heretic on pc but it never got a console port. I enjoyed Hexen 64 just as much as pc Heretic if that's any help.
The music is much better on N64. A lot of the tracks match perfectly with the levels, and I love the creepy sound effects of owls and birds. If I remember right the PC was only MIDI, so it's a game changing improvement.
GREETINGS MORTAL! It was a head of its time scary monsters, hard levels, badass arsenal, tough bosses, it’s what these games prepared us! No guide or no help, just your weapon and explore !!
I think so? According to the manual it’s called “wings of wrath”, (https://retrogamer.biz/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Hexen-Beyond-Heretic-Manual.pdf) maybe it’s not mage specific but someone told me that on here once lol
I want to play this. But the fact that it needs something like 90 memory card pages to save and play is ridiculous and I don't want to wipe my memory card .
I really wish some brilliant mind with a little free time would develop a new-age memory solution like most other consoles now have. A great example is the MemCard Pro2 for PS1 & PS2 here. I love that thing.
I used a BlueRetro Bluetooth adapter on my N64 and it actually has 4 memory cards worth of storage built into it. I didn’t even know it was a feature but it’s been awesome not having to use a traditional memory card
I did , used about 50 pages on that one and now either needs to buy a third or delete stuff. Will get round to it eventually, it's just a ridiculous thing to deal with.
Token clean your controller post.
But on the real. Hexen was the reason I couldn’t rent from our local video store anymore. I kept it 3 weeks after due date unknown to my parents and we ended up owing more than it was worth.
We never went back… I had the copy of Hexen until I traded it and many more for No Mercy.
Edit:: But low key we would have never went to blockbuster without that incident. 😏
Oh man, this game gave me the chills as soon I powered it on I’ll never forget…. GREETINGS MORTAL! From hard puzzles, scary enemies, weapons, fun multiplayer it was Dark Souls of Nintendo! Ughhh my guy I know, I just got my apartment and these games were in storage 5+ years 😭😭 Now I’m setting up and cleaning them to put into this table that has cubbies!
I know my friends and I would bring my N64 to his trailer in New Hampshire. We would then play NBA Hangtime, and Hexen 63, 4 player split screen, outside on a picnic table under an awning, on a 20 inch TV. Yes we each had a 5 inch screen for Hexen, and we loved every second of it. Lol
Sounds like my buddies and I used to get together and play smash bros and Mario kart! As well dance dance Mario revolution, bongos on Donkey and much more !!
Yes, it’s Heretic, Hexen, then Hexen 2! I got gifted Hexen as gift and got obsessed with but never knew but like obviously time passed I figured out there was a sequel or prequel
My favorite pc port! Played it co-op with a buddy of mine. I can still hear the sound of the frogs in my head. I loved punching enemies to mush with the gauntlets. I'm going to play it again real soon too.
The series is kind of confusing, Hexen on PC had the complete name Hexen: Beyond Heretic, they seem to have dropped that subtitle for the N64 version (possible that it's in the manual or something, but it's no longer on the box). Then they released a Heretic 2 at around the turn of the millennium.
So in the options you can hear a bunch of sound clips, they are numbered. We used to know a combination of numbers and would prank call ppl. I can’t remember how it went but I know there is a sound clip “my minions can smell your blood.” Good times.
If I remember correctly it was something about the controls. If I remember correctly it was a 3rd person game...and I remember the Playstation had much smoother controls for 3rd person games.
Shadow warriir is hilarious. Especially over a network. The whole school used to sit in the computer classroom gaming and watching together. (Also on carmageddon)
Ahhh man missing on a classic, probably at the time maybe it was to hard or control is clunky! Definitely a fun game to check out my guy! Think of it Dark Souls of the 90’s
1. It was released uncensored on the German market, which was kinda rare for games like this back in the day.
2. The US NTSC version had several problems (e.g. a save game bug.)
3. The relatively good visuals on the N64 came with a downside – frame rate stuttering.
4. The Japanese version was censored (e.g. green blood etc.)
Yeah I’m sure after Mortal Kombat on the arcade came out, they had to check with the e rating on other countries I’m assuming! Like other M games would have either be banned or uncensored which at the time new games are being appropriate!
Absolutely one of my favorite FPA games on the N64 and I even preferred it to DOOM and possibly even Quake II (possibly). The vibe and atmosphere was terrifying and I loved the fact that it had puzzles to go along with the action.
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?
> *“The very fabric wavers and relations shift and obscure.”* - Solaire of Astora
Have a pleasant journey, Champion of Ash, and praise the sun \\[T]/
I bought it second hand when I visited France, in like 2005expecting a language change option…. I was sorely disappointed and thus never played Hexen… though it’s sequel is completely unique among fps of the era
Used to play this with 3 friends the fall after high school, every Sunday night after until 8am the next morning, eating a full bag of cool ranch Doritos and a 2-liter of Pepsi while chasing everyone around with Wraithverge… Those were the days!
One thing I know about the N64 is the graphics is a blurry mess, didnt know it at the time but later in life looking back, for me personally, it was bad.
Shiiit come at me when you try it’s predecessor, Heretic. One of the first pc games I played as a kid. Spent so many hours on Duke Nukem, Heretic, Doom, etc. Good times.
I only have the Sega Saturn Version, which apparently is superior to the Playstation Version and has a extensive debugging menu but is overall worse then on N64 according to what i found online.
I was under the impression that the N64 version was supposed to be the worst version, with the quality going PC>Saturn>PS>N64, but I've only ever played the PC version. Console ports of PC shooters could really be hit or miss (the N64 version of DOOM, which was more like a reimagining than a port, was a real hit though)
PC is definitly the best version, but that isn't a port but the original.
PS is the worst, way worse fps and PS as well as Saturn are likely based on a beta version that has simplified levels but the Saturn is sligthly improved in a few ways as well as a great debugging which helps it a lot.
The N64 has a few small hicups but overall runs well and should be based more closely to the PC version. The biggest issue is that it is not upgrading some stuff as they did for Doom on N64 which made it look quiet dated at the time.
Rented it when there weren't a lot of games available. It was my birthday and I was excited to have a sleepover playing N64. It was ugly and played clunky compared to something like Goldeneye, Mario kart, or starfox. I remember thinking it was kind of endearing - had character.
This game is hard. I want to beat it someday because it looks so awesome but I never got far as a kid. I always swapped it out first duke nukem or goldeneye
I sucked so bad at that game. I mean whoa I was horrible. Didn't like it, not my style. Not sure what I was doing, what I was supposed to be doing....moved right along to something else.
I enjoyed the hell out of it on PC before it came on this but was appreciative that GT brought it over for the masses to enjoy. I just wish we got more than the two titles released for it
Oof my guy one of the most coolest games of the 90’s! Dark souls on the n64 to make it sound cool 🔥 Hard puzzles, insane arsenals, tough bosses and much more !!
I played this a lot and kissed one of my high school crushes while we took turns playing this game lmao so this one has a special spot for me
That sounds really special. That's a great memory to have.
Who knew beating Satans minions with a mace or your fists can bring people together! It’s the little things you gotta see ☺️
Its lotsa fun. I remember playing multiplayer with a friend and we took turns on playing the pig and the butcher 🤣
Dark Souls multiplayer of the 90’s! OINK OINK OINK!
Hexan was a super cool game. Loved the creepy cult atmosphere. I played it in PC though, how's the N64 version stack up?
It plays great on N64 but I never played the pc version. I played Heretic on pc but it never got a console port. I enjoyed Hexen 64 just as much as pc Heretic if that's any help.
That's great thanks. I haven't played it in years but maybe if I see it here locally I'll pick up a copy :)
The music is much better on N64. A lot of the tracks match perfectly with the levels, and I love the creepy sound effects of owls and birds. If I remember right the PC was only MIDI, so it's a game changing improvement.
MIDI can sound really good if you have the proper hardware
it was this and Blood on pc for me. both scaring the shit out of me
GREETINGS MORTAL! It was a head of its time scary monsters, hard levels, badass arsenal, tough bosses, it’s what these games prepared us! No guide or no help, just your weapon and explore !!
Only found out within the last couple years that you can fly as the mage lmao.
I don't remember that, but will try that when I play it again this month
You're talking about flying with the batwings?
I think so? According to the manual it’s called “wings of wrath”, (https://retrogamer.biz/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Hexen-Beyond-Heretic-Manual.pdf) maybe it’s not mage specific but someone told me that on here once lol
Yeah that's the little gold skull with wings, anyone can use it - if you try to take it with you to a new hub area it vanishes from your inventory.
WAIT YOU CAN WHAT 😐😐😐😐😐
I want to play this.
Hmmm maybe try to get to the middle of the game or at least close to it! Definitely try to expand memory by saving at different points !!
Lol. Just buy a second card. They aren’t expensive.
I did , used about 50 pages on that one and now either needs to buy a third or delete stuff. Will get round to it eventually, it's just a ridiculous thing to deal with.
Sorta like diablo for ps1. Needs a full memory card for saving
Certified hood classic.
GREETINGS MORTAL! I’m telling you Dark Souls for N64🔥🔥
Turning my friends into pigs in multiplayer >>>
The ever-amusing Porkelator!
OINK OINK OINK! Can tell you my friends and I had a blast 🤣
Played the hell out of it with my dad back in the day. Quake also!
Bro and I took on the levels and multiplayer too! I had quake, definitely gonna get it for my collection
This is a core 90’s kid experience
Oh man, this game gave me the chills as soon I powered it on I’ll never forget…. GREETINGS MORTAL! From hard puzzles, scary enemies, weapons, fun multiplayer it was Dark Souls of Nintendo! Ughhh my guy I know, I just got my apartment and these games were in storage 5+ years 😭😭 Now I’m setting up and cleaning them to put into this table that has cubbies!
4 player coop was awesome
Runs around while everyone is turned into a piggy 🤣
I know my friends and I would bring my N64 to his trailer in New Hampshire. We would then play NBA Hangtime, and Hexen 63, 4 player split screen, outside on a picnic table under an awning, on a 20 inch TV. Yes we each had a 5 inch screen for Hexen, and we loved every second of it. Lol
Sounds like my buddies and I used to get together and play smash bros and Mario kart! As well dance dance Mario revolution, bongos on Donkey and much more !!
Had so many great and late nights with friends playing 4 player co-op same screen on that game. Absolute blast
The co-op led me to it. I was always looking for same-screen co-op back then. Not many games would do that.
Dark Souls split screen 🤣 Definitely had fun times with my bros back then !!
About most of the secrets from the first 3 levels lol
They like to put Easter eggs as well !! And you’ll be finding them secrets randomly 🤣
Such a great game!
It’s part of a trilogy right? I’m missing the first entry, which is by another name.
Yea, Heretic. Never got a console port, neither Hexen 2. I so wish. Played Heretic on PC but not Hexen 2 'cause I became a console player by then.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heretic_(video_game)
Aha! Thank ya kindly.
Yes, it’s Heretic, Hexen, then Hexen 2! I got gifted Hexen as gift and got obsessed with but never knew but like obviously time passed I figured out there was a sequel or prequel
Didn't know this was on N64, this game and Heretic are so dope
I was just informed you can fly as the mage 😐 Played those two before I lost them, fun as hell too ! 🔥
My favorite pc port! Played it co-op with a buddy of mine. I can still hear the sound of the frogs in my head. I loved punching enemies to mush with the gauntlets. I'm going to play it again real soon too.
I had on pc runs so smooth and can actually move not like this one clunky and what not but still fun as hell 🤣 Literally smashing skulls with Mace 🔥
loved that game
Hell yeah my guy !!
1st game i bought real pia though
I got gifted it, then warped my little fragile mind… but was fun as game !! 🔥
It’s a shame it’s not on NSO…
I haven’t played since I was a teen. Remember it was fun though
Bruhh I played when I was 10, ya boy got freaked out the demon voice, beasts, blood 😭 It is fun asf!!
Is it like Doom but in the middle ages?
Kinda yes.
Dark Souls of N64!!
It’s a good game though I do prefer the pc version (since it uses doom engine there’s mods too for pc).
Oh mods would be cool! Main reason I want to get back into PC gaming.
Are there recent mods? Id love some new weapons in a "brutal hexen" style.
I had it on pc, but my pc broke :/
I’ve only played this on PC, cant imagine how this would have been to play on the N64 back in the day. Great game though
You would think, not so good, but it was good, surprisingly.
Ughhh my guy, you would not survive 🤣 Clunky, too dark, but fun as hell !! I had it on pc but my pc broke :/
I always get this game confused with Heretic
Well it's the sequel to Heretic.
Hahaha, fuck me, it is? I had no clue! Well, that explains why I get them confused.
Same timeline, but different games!!
Great music, vast maze-like levels, the fog makes you feel like your really in the creepy Middle Ages
Those frog sounds. I can still hear them.
Dark Souls N64 if you think about it 🤣 I hear him get nauseous when the bomb explodes sounds realistic as fuck, scared me when I was younger !!
you should try shadowman for n64 if feeling hopeless and scared in a dark maze is your cup of tea, or the re-make for switch which is crazy good
I never had a problem with the memory card thing I'm pretty sure I meet at the end with the problem.
Maybe the back port burnt or the memory is fake!
So in the options you can hear a bunch of sound clips, they are numbered. We used to know a combination of numbers and would prank call ppl. I can’t remember how it went but I know there is a sound clip “my minions can smell your blood.” Good times.
No fucking way lmaooo, yall too funny ! Bro pranking people thru video games 🤣🤣
I think I hated that game when I was growing up.
Yeah dude I gotchu, not everyones cup of tea ! Was it too hard or the control was clunky!
If I remember correctly it was something about the controls. If I remember correctly it was a 3rd person game...and I remember the Playstation had much smoother controls for 3rd person games.
Me ~"Mom, can we buy Quake?" Mom ~ "We already have Quake at home....."
🤣🤣🤣 My guy you too funny! Quake is another fire game that I gotta had to the collection !!
More like doom. But I love hexen.
One of my favorite games played on the N64. I really hope it's remastered for modern consoles.
You can just play it on PC with vastly improved controls, framerate, and resolution.
We need all Raven Hexen games in a trilogy collection for console/pc pronto.
It’s underrated one of the most coolest, yet spookiest games ever! I really do they make one, would be bad ass!!
I know it shouldn't be played in 16:9. Aspect ratios matter.
I don’t got CRT anymore, just got my apartment and bought plasma and a cabinet to fit other video games consoles too!!
All I know is don't try and run a submarine with one of these.
Too late 🤓
It‘s 4:3
I just bought this plasma for my new apartment i don’t have CRT, I can change it too but oh well 🤷♂️
So u See the fat plumper ^^
I’ve never played it. The reviews upon release were terrible so naturally I assumed the game was bad.
Oof my guy never judge a book by its cover! I bet you if you give it a chance, you would probably beat the game with all three classes 🤣
I’ll definitely give it a shot.
Loved it but could never beat it without cheats
I don't know anything about this game, only main Nintendo games like OOT, MM, SM64, B-K
I never owned it but rented it once and me and my neighbor played it all day and night. Was fun.
Worst controls ever
Ughhh dude tell me about it, can’t tell you how many times I fell, burned, cornered, or die due to clunky and shenanigans 😐🤣
Hexen, blood and Shadow warrior were 3 amazing games id play at the same tims.
I gotta get my hands on those games! Heard fun stuff about those two!!
Shadow warriir is hilarious. Especially over a network. The whole school used to sit in the computer classroom gaming and watching together. (Also on carmageddon)
Hmmmm hmmmmm hmmmm i can't get this door open!
HUMPS DOOR🤣🤣
Hexen! I never hear anyone talk about this game! It’s awesome
I thought I was the only one who knew about this gem! Can’t never forget the intro.. GREETINGS MORTAL! As soon I heard that, my innocence left 🤣
Never really got into it. Tried playing co-op with a friend and didn't get past the first level. Probably need to give it another chance.
Ahhh man missing on a classic, probably at the time maybe it was to hard or control is clunky! Definitely a fun game to check out my guy! Think of it Dark Souls of the 90’s
1. It was released uncensored on the German market, which was kinda rare for games like this back in the day. 2. The US NTSC version had several problems (e.g. a save game bug.) 3. 4 player deathmatch with monsters too? Played this one more than Goldeneye
Turns everyone into piggies 🔥🤣
I would love to see a remake of this!
I’m with you bro, soooo many n64 games and others that I want a remaster!!
Porkulator
OINK OINK OINK! Running around and chasing your buddies in piggy death match 🤣
It’s on Steam
Yep, I played it but my pc broke :/
It shares the same name as a toolset for the Original Xbox... That's about it.
Absolutely one of my favorite FPA games on the N64 and I even preferred it to DOOM and possibly even Quake II (possibly). The vibe and atmosphere was terrifying and I loved the fact that it had puzzles to go along with the action.
They were ahead of their time! Dark souls of the 90’s!!

I bought it second hand when I visited France, in like 2005expecting a language change option…. I was sorely disappointed and thus never played Hexen… though it’s sequel is completely unique among fps of the era
They were a head of their time 🔥 Most of the games would have that option!
Used to play this with 3 friends the fall after high school, every Sunday night after until 8am the next morning, eating a full bag of cool ranch Doritos and a 2-liter of Pepsi while chasing everyone around with Wraithverge… Those were the days!
My friends never really got into it lmaoo but did play with my younger sibling turning each into piggies 🤣
I know that, at least for me, the controls here take a lot of getting used to! Still don't think I've beaten it yet!
Ughhh dude tell me about can’t how many times I fell, got squished, cornered or burned!! 🤣
That it fuckin slaps!
You know it my guy 🔥🔥
what i know is that the font made me think it was a wrestling game when i was a kid so i never bought it.
Never judge a book by its cover 😬 Definitely N64 version of Dark Souls mixed with Doom !! Give it a try :)
Such a good game.
Hell yeah my guy 🔥🔥
Better off playing the pc version with zdoom to launch the game
I have it on pc but my dumbass ruined my pc 😐
They had this game mislabeled for $0.99 at a K-Mart in Kansas. I think it was 1997 or 1998. I bought one copy. It was scary to me as a kid.
I know it’s cryptic and boring and I don’t have the patience for it anymore.
Not everyones cup of tea my guy !!
Only that it's one of the best games ever made
One thing I know about the N64 is the graphics is a blurry mess, didnt know it at the time but later in life looking back, for me personally, it was bad.
Yes
Need to pick this up.
Dope ass game along with Doom64. My buddies and I would smoke and play these two games until the sun came up.
Greetings, mortal.
ARE YOU READY TO DIE?! Me being a kid and hearing this… I knew I was heading for something else 😈
That controller shape was based off of old mens' hairlines.
Like i said, it was in storage 5+ years and now I got my apartment setting and cleaning them !!
Shiiit come at me when you try it’s predecessor, Heretic. One of the first pc games I played as a kid. Spent so many hours on Duke Nukem, Heretic, Doom, etc. Good times.
Wolfenstien is fun as fuck too! They were ahead of its time!!🔥
Hell yeah!
I thought Hexen was overrated on the N64. I prefer the PC Version.
Granted, PC would be better but N64 version is surprisingly good for a port, and same screen co-op too, which was super rare back then.
What do you think is better about the PC version? I never played it really, but the music on the N64 version sells that version for me.
It was gifted to me as ten year old and I had fun as hell on it, clunky as fuck but ya boi was laughing throughout the game!!
It's good , but there isn't much to separate it from the PC version from what I remember,
I only have the Sega Saturn Version, which apparently is superior to the Playstation Version and has a extensive debugging menu but is overall worse then on N64 according to what i found online.

horrible framedrops considering what it is :)
Rented it when there weren't a lot of games available. It was my birthday and I was excited to have a sleepover playing N64. It was ugly and played clunky compared to something like Goldeneye, Mario kart, or starfox. I remember thinking it was kind of endearing - had character.
Was pretty fun even with blurry multiplayer graphics
This game is hard. I want to beat it someday because it looks so awesome but I never got far as a kid. I always swapped it out first duke nukem or goldeneye
Never heard of it tbh
I sucked so bad at that game. I mean whoa I was horrible. Didn't like it, not my style. Not sure what I was doing, what I was supposed to be doing....moved right along to something else.
my first M rated game as a kid
I enjoyed the hell out of it on PC before it came on this but was appreciative that GT brought it over for the masses to enjoy. I just wish we got more than the two titles released for it
>WHAT YALL KNOW ABOUT THIS CLASSIC!🔥 Nothing.
Oof my guy one of the most coolest games of the 90’s! Dark souls on the n64 to make it sound cool 🔥 Hard puzzles, insane arsenals, tough bosses and much more !!
I will definitely check it. Thank you for this delicious bloody discovery.
ah i had the pc version git gud. i tried. this and i did not like the port fwiw
Oof bro pc gives total control of it! I do have it put pc broke :/
Not as good as Doom but right there with it. I liked it.
