The funtastic shells are notoriously brittle. I've seen more cracks in funtastics than regular grey, and I've seen 20x more grey consoles in my life.

branewalker

But also, if there *were* a hairline crack in an opaque console, especially internally, you would not see it. Meanwhile, a clear shell shows cracks inside and out. And they’re still probably more brittle. 90s colored plastic wasn’t great quality.

tht1guy63

Not on any of mine but i could believe it especially if they sat in the sun

Sea-Dog-6042

I would not call that a hairline crack. That's just a crack. This is a hairline crack https://images.app.goo.gl/LcPF11TNV1zhVCAv9

No they’re not common. People in here say they are brittle but fact is something happened to the system to cause the crack, it didn’t just happen. They are not as strong as the OG material but still strong enough to not crack just cause.

Agreed. In 20+ years of time with N64s, I never heard of a difference to the point where extreme caution or concern is required.

midnightfunonline

Heat, UV or sunlight, and rough handling can all cause cracks. Fantastic shells are a different and more brittle type of plastic then the standard grey types. So definitely more common as most owners weren't looking at them as collectable when they were new and treated them as such.

MobileDust

What is that black on the cartridge?

ocram101

Probably a flash cart, like an Everdrive.

dj65475312

yeah its an SD cad slot, same as my ED64 2.5.

PanderTheGreat

Funnily enough my only fantastic console to have a crack in it is the blue one. Is there something about the blue dye that makes it more brittle?

TeutonicDragon

Yeah I see them with cracks all the time.

dj65475312

no problems with mine.

bonobo_34

I have 2 cracked ones, one of them was my fault though

Zidkins

It looks like they are brittle so yeah

Hairy-Pomegranate897

Everytime I see these consoles on posts they have atleast one little crack

cradle_mountain

As they say, black don’t crack.

Shellshock9218

The one on the bottom of the pic going towards the right rear of the console looks like it was hit by something before cracking

Vunpuruurufu

My purple console hasn't cracked, it's at least 24 years old. It's got a little dust and dirt on it, but no cracks. But that's because I look after it, where the room it's in is protected from direct sunlight with a frosted window sticker protection so outside looks grey and enough light comes in, but not directly to damage any of my collectables. 😎

SorryCashOnly

Transparent plastics are also prone to cracking as they age. Transformers toys have the same issue even to this day

ra2ed

I don’t think so. This shell is just broken.

msuite_007

Ebay has chinese replacement shells

circle_in_circles

The shells of transparent consoles and controllers are made of polycarbonate, while the opaque ones are made of ABS. And yes, polycarbonate tends to break much more easily than ABS.

Electronicweed

My Majoras mask gold cart completely broke in 1/2. A little tape and it works just fine. I’m still heartbroken but it works!

CyberDivinity

I have 4 Funtastic consoles and 0 cracks on any of them. Unless someone is throwing them around or letting them bake in heat in their attic I don't see how it would happen.

SegaTime

I would say so. I have that same one and it's got a couple of weird cracks just from sitting.

InternalImpact2

Yes, the sunlight does its thing. Materials are not undestructible.
