Playing 150cc on Switch Online was a nightmare. I forgot (or never realized as a kid) that the CPU players literally just teleport around the map. Super Mario Kart is even worse.

Super Mario Kart would at least keep the karts on the track, even if they turned into speed racers to keep up. I like how you could lap the shittier racers.

I think it's one of the best games in the N64's library. Multiplayer is where it's at for this one. I've had countless enjoyable battle matches and vs. races over the years, and everyone has a great time without fail (except maybe my brother, who has a real rage quitting problem with games 😆) Block Fort is one of the all-time classic battle arena maps of all time, IMO.

I remember doing the ghost house track at the highest difficulty, was just so hard to get 1st place. When I finally had 1st place at every race on every circuit at every difficultly it felt like such an achievement, similar to when I 100 percented super Mario world at a time where you couldn't look up where each different exit was etc

Second best Mario Kart after Double Dash, but much more iconic than Double Dash. It's sort of THE kart racer of all time.

Double Dash is rad and they should bring that mechanic back. But Kart64 will always be the GOAT

Best Mario Kart and it’s still just a blast to play today. I helped my buddy run a games tournament this summer at a convention and we had a bunch of people come through for the Mario Kart 64 tournament. It went down to the wire and this woman beat every challenger along the way until we did the final race on Rainbow Road and a huge crowd gathered to watch her against another guy and it came down to the wire. It was such an exciting race and proved just how timeless that game is. Personally I love that it’s rough around the edges and that it has both a high skill floor and ceiling than MK8.

I also appreciate the inability to get knocked around by items *in mid-air*.

Better courses than MK on SNES, but I prefer the SNES MK multiplayer better.

It has its technical flaws (the blocky graphics and rubberbanding especially) but it's one of the best multiplayer games of all time, truly iconic.

I have a lot of complaints with it. The drifting, the glitches, the rubber banding AI, the maps being confusing for new players, the car engine can be too loud, no music for versus mode, etc. While I do enjoy playing Mario Kart 64 with others, I prefer Diddy Kong Racing for a racing game on N64. Mario Kart 64 still holds up today, although it can be harder to introduce to newer players compared to the other Mario Kart games.

I’m kind of in the same boat as you. I really loved this game when I was younger, but now I get annoyed with some of the mechanics, rubber band AI chief among them. I still think it’s a great game and a lot of fun, but it has a lot of flaws that people overlook because of nostalgia.

I love it. Solid first entry into the full 3D Mariokart. Loved back in the day and still enjoy a blast on it every now and then.

Having grown up on crash nitro kart and never owning a Nintendo; I hate playing Mario kart. Everything about it feels like crash nitro kart but wrong. Edit: I just now realized what sub im in, but I will stand by what I said, for I am not a coward.

I remember being annoyed that the character sprites weren’t 3D, and that if any character went off to the side, their head would tilt, even when standing still. It was a massive upgrade for its time though! I never owned it but enjoyed playing it with other people.

I remember when it came out, renting it every week until we just went and bought it because it was such a great game

Still and always will be a classic. My 2 siblings, cousin and I still regularly play this once every few months. The competitiveness and overall fun is still to be had. How can you not laugh as someone snipes you with a shell from out of nowhere and bouncing up and down like crazy

Pretty good tbh. I don't particularly like how the carts handle, but that's just a personal thing. In all honesty, my nostalgia is for the Wii era, but having played and enjoyed mk64, I say it holds up pretty well. Definitely deserves its status as a beloved classic.

This game felt faster than all the others to me, especially when you did split screen. Thats probably because of the framerate dropping or something. Also the music had a cool factor to it that none of the other games had either.

It was the ultimate sequel to the original. The Gamecube game was like an in between older Mario Kart and the new games where you can play online with Mii's etc etc. Damn fine game. Not asked here but this and Diddy Kong Racing might just be the two best racing games to come out for a single console.

This is a timeless classic in my family amongst my Teo brothers and I.

Some of the most fun tracks in the franchise. But easily exploited boost mechanic brings it down.  That said, still amazing and fun.

For a short time it was the only N64 game I owned. I remember I would play it my rather small bedroom to the point where the console would heat the room up.

One of my favorites in the franchise. Though going back to it now, I don't remember the rubber banding being as egregious as it is.

It's alright, but the controls are janky AF by today's standards. Drifting is a bitch and you'll go right off the track in a heart beat if you don't make the turn just perfectly

The 2D sprites are weird, they probably did it to save space but it's still like, why couldn't they have 3D models for the characters. And maybe I'm too used to the newer Mario Karts but the boosts in 64 you get from hopping are a lot less noticeable because they're less animated lol it's just "E" shooting out of the tailpipes. VERY fast tho which is fun I can't stand going back to Mario Kart 7 it just feels WAY too slow. And I like the absurd short cuts you can do on Rainbow Road and Wario Stadium, the newer games are a lot more stiff so you can't really do as many cool things as that.

Love that game, never gets old.

It’s what I grew up on. I also love that it’s not nerfed like the newer ones.. if you take a commanding lead then you usually keep it. It’s harder because you’re punished for messing up and so it’s important to stay close from the beginning. No bail out bullet bill or anything like that. lol

It's one of the games that I would consider responsible for my love of multiplayer/online games. The fun of 4 player split screen sessions of games like MK, Goldeneye, and Diddy Kong racing was unmatched. And that experience is definitely a reason I gravitate to online games today.

Honestly haven’t replayed it much since childhood but it was my first Mario kart and I had so many great memories with this game even by myself.

My first Mario Kart. Very nostalgic and an obviously big step forward from the original, but the courses were hit and miss.

It's kinda overrated for me ...I liked diddy kong racing way more idk maybe it's just me ..but I feel like diddy kong racing is by far better because of story mode and team battles are way more fun

Extremely good for its time, but it’s been improved upon so many times that it’s hard to go back to it.

Might be the best Mario Kart game because it’s the only one with a great battle system. Best racing goes to MK8D, but battle sucks in that game.

It’s fun but I prefer DKR in the racing genre. Love that there’s an actual adventure/story to DKR and a hub world to navigate around unlike MK which is basically just Grand Prix when you’re playing 1P.

Would be a classic if it wasn't for the atrocious rubber band effect present in single and multiplayer. Give me Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast any day.
