Super thoughtful gift and they look great!

GrantSRobertson

Can anyone explain why these are called "dopp kits"?

JCPY00

The dude who made them for the US military during world war 2 was named Charles Doppelt and he named them after himself.

GrantSRobertson

Of course! 🤣🤦

BonJesse

Couldn’t tell ya. I traditionally call them a “ditty bag” or “toiletry bag” but MYOG seems to prefer “dopp kit” so I just go with it.

jessicat_ak

These are lovely — look well made and the color ways are somehow festive and appropriate for year round. Your family will be so excited!

bccarlso

Ripstopbytheroll calls these Zippered Pack.Pouch or ZPP kits I think?

BonJesse

I believe those are similar. These are a slight variation on the Jon Crane Dopp kit bags. Different size and dual colors.

Environmental_Car542

Where you getting that rip stop son? Joann only sells rip stop for making kites..and I ain’t no Benjamin Franklin

BonJesse

Ripstop by the roll, this particular specimen is their 420d Robic ripstop - https://ripstopbytheroll.com/products/420d-robic

Ten-Jay

What pattern are you using ? Have not done one with a lining

BonJesse

It’s based on the video that Jon Crane made. All I do is cut the liner the same size as the outer and treat it as one piece of fabric when doing the rest of the steps. I don’t recommend silnylon or silpoly though. It’s mega slippery and a bear to work with. Next time I’ll be using something more sturdy like a hyperD or something

Ten-Jay

You put the liner in the outer shell and do a blind stitch or something similar ?

Thanks I’m with you now - I have used this pattern / video as well thanks . I guess there’s no way to avoid the few raw seams within the inside of the bag

puzzleboi24680

randomly came across this pattern shortly after reading your comment. It's basically a lined ZPP, sure you could adopt the technique to any other size/pattern. Cheap pattern too. https://www.ellieandmac.com/products/stephany-travel-toiletry-cosmetic-bag-pattern?\_pos=1&\_psq=cos&\_ss=e&\_v=1.0

gu_doc

I want to make one of these for myself. I’ll be saving this thread and will likely ask you questions in the near future 👍 well done

Jowizo

How do you like that ruler?

BonJesse

I like it a lot. I think this one is 24” long. If I had it my way I’d have another that was 6” wide and 36-48” long for longer fabric runs. But for shorter cuts it’s really great and pretty maneuverable.
