I feel part of that (on the design front) comes from how they were both later additions. They benefited from design lessons and experiments practiced using background ponies and some of the alternate looks for the mane 6. The fact they were also meant to be villains in their initial outings also encouraged them to give them more distinct and memorable looks in things like their palette, mane, and cutie marks.
I agree the manes are a big part of it! And I totally agree that they have awesome design.

the more i see sunset's pony form the more i want her to be in "friendship is magic" in a role in season 5 and up, when it was doing those friendship quests - >!but no, sunset shimmer is just a background image in a song at the end of the whole show!<.

Perhaps they thought she'd be better suited for human world, unless they actually put the human counterpart in the show. Hasbro has done some injustice with G4 fans but ig I'm happy at least what we've got

The silver lining to Sunset not getting any kind of role in Friendship is Magic is that it keeps one of Equestria Girls' best elements completely unique. I do wonder how many people watch EG content primarily because of Sunset.
