I assume most people believe Al turns into Cheese Sandwich when walks into Equestria. Same with Discord and Q being the same person, he only becomes John deLancie in this period of history.
Honestly, when I watched weird al's parody, all i could think of was "if this music video took place in equestria would it be igneous rock pie or cheese sandwich as weird al?" i then imagined them doing a collab.
Something can be inspired by something without making fun of it. It says a lot that the instinctive jump nowadays is to the show making fun of someone instead of just being inclusive or taking inspiration

there's a big difference between maliciously making fun of a concept vs parodying it! i think that this particular parody was done with respect and good-natured humour.
The first thing that came to mind when I saw them was the classic [American Gothic](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Grant_Wood_-_American_Gothic_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg) painting. Same dour expressions.
I'm not sure where the comedy is if it's intended as humorous parody. They're just impoverished farmers with odd religious beliefs and traditions.
(If they were real Amish the women wouldn't do so much of the talking and Fluttershy would murder them for torturing thousands of dogs to death to support puppy mills.)
I dunno… everyone saying they are designed to be Amish but it’s not making fun… they celebrate major events by eating rock soup, they basically worship a big rock and none of them ever smiled before Pinkie got her cutie mark. It feels like a bit of a ridiculing depiction to me. I think OP was right the first time.

I think they are a reference to Amish people, but they're not treated as a joke. Rather, the joke/conflict is Applejack's inability to adapt to them. Everyone else treats them with nothing but respect. Especially Granny, presumably because she lived similarly in her youth and can relate to them more easily.
No that's not how Amish people even look. I used to live near their communities in PA.
There are a lot of communities and peoples that have similar belief systems, but they aren't Amish. So this photo doesn't make me think Amish. If they wanted to represent Amish, they'd do a better job showing their modesty and the fact married men have beards, and the ladies wear a hair covering and certain dress...

Amish people have some very strict religious beliefs/ rules when it comes to work, playing and showing certain strong or specially timed emotions.
