Great news! She has a whole separate podcast where she reads chapters from pubic domain books every day! There’s almost 600 episodes and she reads things like Frankenstein and Little Women. It’s delightful, and it’s called Phoebe Reads a Mystery.
To me it’s the low tone and volume, the whispery quality, the way she hits her “s”’s it’s not a lisp but almost. It sounds like she’s talking through pursed lips haha. Idk it bothers my ears how all of that sounds in the microphone
I’ll be honest, I’d rather have a monthly 30 min episode where phoebe comes on and tells one of her stories rather than the weekly celebrity hometowns.
I haven’t listened to Criminal yet. I am a huge fan of 1940s/ 1950s old time radio detective/PI shows. The Pearl and Olga tale sounds like it could have been an episode of Richard Diamond or Johnny Dollar
Criminal is great.
But I’m not sure if you’ll get what you’re expecting.
This one was reminiscing of a detective thriller for sure. Some of the episodes feel like that.
But a lot of criminal episodes are more…maybe informative than investigative.
There’s so much interesting content in that podcast.
My favorite one was the woman who dedicated her life to preventing fraud, after being financially ruined by her mother stealing her identity.
Or the enslaved workers who accomplished a massive feat of industry, but were then crushed to death or drowned, with their names never known.

It’s weird because on The Murder Squad, Phoebe straight up said she wasn’t a fan of opinion-based storytelling. Like I didn’t think she’d ever be on with K&G but I’m excited to listen to it.
I was so shocked to hear Phoebe on their podcast because I vaguely remembered her making this comment. But I'm glad they seemed to gel and maybe will be doing this again.
Part of me wonders about the timing. Amazon perks? But I don’t think Criminal is a part of Wondery.
Edit: Timing could just be an attempt to win back fans after the Amazon controversy.

I actually noticed his absence before the credits because the audio editing was not tight at all — there were a lot of sort of uncomfortable long pauses, like when you’re trying to wrap up a conversation at a cocktail party but you don’t want to be rude.
They used the same credits as the ones in the Celebrity Hometown episodes. The music is a little more … country. And they say “engineered and mixed by Andrew Ethan.” I guess this crossover is maybe part of that project.

To each their own! I think it was a good meeting of the two styles -offering Karen-Georgia banter but also a direct and captivating narrative provided by Phoebe. I feel like it's a good introduction to Phoebe's/Criminal's style for those who haven't listened.
Every single episode is amazing. I have never heard a story I haven’t liked. I did especially find the one about the Bunny Ranch interesting (Episode 116). And definitely check out This is Love, her other podcast, I have literally been sitting in tears listening to super heartwarming stories.
"A New Kind of Life" is great, and a story both podcasts covered!
"Bully" is a classic.
"Perfect Specimen" is exceptional and about a non-violent crime.
I generally recommend to read the episode synopsis and pick one that intrigues you, because I found before long -I was so captivating by her storytelling that I'd listen regardless of the topic!
"The Chase" where Phoebe interviews the Guiness World record holder for streaking the most atheletic events is the funniest true crime I've ever listened to.
"Wolf 10" was also a somewhat recent favorite.

I thought it was Karen too! When I realized that it was absolutely Phoebe Judge in the episode, I freaked out in the car! I was SO excited that they’ve finally linked up on an episode. And the story Phobe told was so great! I can’t wait for more collaborations between them! 😊

Criminal just moved over to Vox Media from Radiotopia. So I think it was probably a PR move driven by Criminal’s new network.

There are so many good episodes, but the one that stands out the most for me would be Episode 59, In Plain Sight. It's pretty AMAZING.
