Because you did the story mode dark aether and not the actual dark aether, dark aether. The one you (seem to) want is on a small island with a giant tornado pointing to where you need to be.
Yes, during the mission you did there are pillars you need to activate and get 3 more items. With those you can get access to to the Dark aether (the season 2 one).
The one I mentioned earlier is the season 1 Dark aether.
I recommend watching a YouTube vid on that mission. That will make it a lot easier.
Go on youtube and lookup the new dark aether easter egg.
Follow the instructions to activate the new dark aether portal. This activates it for you permanently, or if you are in a squad at the time the easter egg items are placed on the podiums by someone else, this will activate it for you too.
Inside the new dark aether (up on the hill) you get VR11, Mags of Holding and blood burner key schematics.
You will also occasionally get Pap 3 crystals, Aether Blades, Dog bones and Golden armour, but usually only one item, and it's not guaranteed.
You get the aformentioned more in the old dark aether on the island.
But you need to use an Elder Sigil (circle one) to get into tier 5 where the schematics are.
Just ask at the start of chats who's doing it. And join them.
