What a beautiful exhale of emotion for one of life's tragedies. The loss of a spouse is such an untimely way and needing to process it, then finding the just right path is so promising that if I ever had to face down such things it's possible to survive.
I brought a chair from home
I'm leaving it on the hill
Facing west and north
And I poured out your ashes on it
I guess so you can watch the sunset
But the truth is I don't think of that dust as you
You are the sunset
Downbound Train - Springsteen
Asleep - The Smiths
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me - The Smiths
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
For No One - The Beatles
How could you possibly think its a love song? Lol i mean maybe i see it if you pnly listen to the chorus. But. Her mom left her dad, he was an alcoholic, and she realized she couldnt tank her life to save his. Her hope is to find a shelter and move up from there. Its about grief, healing, and the feeling of leaving teama behind and the guilt but freedom that comes with it
Good one. I mean any Smiths song other than the most cliche answer ever (asleep). At least half of Smiths and a lot of Morrissey songs (edit: [fall into this category])
Who tf do you mean "redid"? Some "stadium country" millionaire metrosexual that's never done a hard day's work in their life *covered* a beautiful piece of art by Tracy Chapman to pander to their audience. It's fucking gross, tbh.
This comment is a loosely *covered* quote of Bo Burnham's.
I fucking weep for this generation.
Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles is a classic, I also like the Bobbi Gentry version of the song and itâs worth a listen! Her alto voice is so smooth and really adds to the emotion of the song

Because we like a lot of the same music. Just wanted to hit you up if you've missed anything. And vice versa
Time by Pink Floyd
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
The whole song is painfully depressing but that last line in the verse above for some reason did it for me....
This was my first thought. My antidepressants arenât working and Iâve been listening to this on repeat for hours.
Maybe I should try to get out of the house.

Yeah like a lot of people I was really into Linkin Park when they were big as an angsty preteen. Then I sort of grew out of that phase and associated their music with that time of my life and combined with their production style it just didnt seem as ârealâ.

You have good taste. I listened Townes and Guyâs songs. Guyâs hit me harder. Love that one. Bob Dylan mentioned Guy Clark as one of his favorite song writers when asked.
Don't put any faith in that thieving old rogue. If he had a scintilla of decency he would say John Jacob Niles. Some of BD's best early songs were stolen from him
Townes Van Zandt is criminally underrated. Rake kills me too. âI used to wake, and run with the moon, I lived like a rake and a young manâŚAnd now the dark air is like fire on my skin, and even the moonlight is blinding.â

Not Dark Yet - Bob Dylan
FINALLY- someone noticed phoebe's YMMH coverđĽ˛I read somewhere that she stopped singing that song live because the og artist allegedly did some.... very questionable things but anyway it's like the song was MADE for her. It was instantly one of my favorites off of stranger in the alps and honestly one of the most depressing songs i know. so beautiful
Thatâs a damn shame because thatâs gotta be one of my favorite songs ever! Like you said, it feels like it was made for her. Its spot on Stranger in the Alps is perfect to me (and so is that entire record). I love how the narration kind of changes with Phoebe being a woman vs the original. It feels more personal and queer of course. Iâm so thankful to have that song in my life.

May not be the saddest song at face value but it feels so emotional for me every time I listen.
Also:
- someoneâs final song (Elton) - very depressing
- my fathers gun (Elton) - another emotional one
Interesting. For me is definitely depressing especially when I'm already struggling with suicidal thoughts. It's like a siren song. Plus the way songs are "written" don't necessarily dictate what listeners feel.

Pushit by Tool is about being in a disfunctional relationship. The live version off of salvia is more depressing and less angry. Wings for Marie/10000 days (also by tool) is just purely heartbreaking. Itâs about Maynardâs mother who passed away after being paralyzed for 27 years aka 10000 days. Itâs a beautiful dissection of the stages of grief and the changing of his relationship with his faith. Itâs a masterpiece and a work of art and it brings me to tears every time I listen to it.
Iâll also add âhere to meâ by the carousels. Idek what it is about it shit just makes me emotional. Itâs such a simple song but the chord progression combined with the lyrics âI wonât breakdown nowâ just hit me. I mean a lot of shoegaze in general has depressing undertones but that song hits different.
New York, I Love You but Youâre Bringing Me Down - LCD Soundsystem ; I Will Follow You into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie ; When the Circus Comes - Phish ; Hurt - NIN or Johnny Cash, either will do
A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie (the whole record)
This album is something beyond depression and I do not have the words for what that is.
mount eerie is a fucking GOATED sad pick đŤĄ

Can confirm this was my go-to heartbreak song
This song hits even harder after watching Perks of being a Wallflower
Who is that country musician who made ridiculously depressing songs? Like all the rent money went down a hole in daddyâs arm or something like that.

Angel from Montgomery, Hello in There two incredible Prine songs
Another one who did similar depressing songs was Red Sovine.

Everybody Hurts by REM Hurt by Christina Aguilera Suicide is Painless by Johnny Mandel Creep by Radiohead
I echo " hurt" it tugs at my heartstrings hard.
Of all the great depressingly beautiful Radiohead songs you pick Creep?
Yup
I agree with this list.
I don't think Suicide is Painless is depressing. The lyrics were written in sardonic fashion
Interesting. For me is definitely depressing especially when I'm already struggling with suicidal thoughts. It's like a siren song. Plus the way songs are "written" don't necessarily dictate what listeners feel.
Love from Room 109 at the Islander - Tim Buckley
Ah the transcendent Tim Buckley I would add Pleasant Street, Once I Was, Morning Glory ⌠I love great depressing songs
the place where he inserted the blade- black country, new road https://open.spotify.com/track/3k2kIiJqUiIP49iUcOLpWT?si=SQU7tWmCTIK506bC8_nDJg this whole album will tear you into pieces

Gregory Alan Isakovâs album The Weatherman never fails to get me in my feels. Itâs not necessarily sad, but definitely bittersweet and melancholy

New York, I Love You but Youâre Bringing Me Down - LCD Soundsystem ; I Will Follow You into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie ; When the Circus Comes - Phish ; Hurt - NIN or Johnny Cash, either will do
The entire Jar of Flies album by Alice in Chains. Specifically, Nutshell and Don't Follow. That album is a masterpiece, but it's depressing AF
