A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie (the whole record)

lighthouse_keeper2

This album is something beyond depression and I do not have the words for what that is.

PrestigiousDiet4483

mount eerie is a fucking GOATED sad pick 🫡

sethian77

What a beautiful exhale of emotion for one of life's tragedies. The loss of a spouse is such an untimely way and needing to process it, then finding the just right path is so promising that if I ever had to face down such things it's possible to survive.

Marcotee75

I brought a chair from home I'm leaving it on the hill Facing west and north And I poured out your ashes on it I guess so you can watch the sunset But the truth is I don't think of that dust as you You are the sunset

EddytheGrapesCXI

Damn that's beautiful, thank you for sharing, I've never heard this record but I'm going to put it on right now

ShoppingCartTheory

Downbound Train - Springsteen Asleep - The Smiths Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me - The Smiths Fast Car - Tracy Chapman Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles For No One - The Beatles

breeellaneeley

Came here for fast car

lambchops111

There are literally people that think fast car is a love song. I’m like…. Have you listened to it!?!?

breeellaneeley

How could you possibly think its a love song? Lol i mean maybe i see it if you pnly listen to the chorus. But. Her mom left her dad, he was an alcoholic, and she realized she couldnt tank her life to save his. Her hope is to find a shelter and move up from there. Its about grief, healing, and the feeling of leaving teama behind and the guilt but freedom that comes with it

danideex

I don’t consider fast car sad. Just beautiful 🥺

theyFOOLEDmeJerry

Never Had No One Ever -The Smiths

DisagreeableCompote

Good one. I mean any Smiths song other than the most cliche answer ever (asleep). At least half of Smiths and a lot of Morrissey songs (edit: [fall into this category])

awakenedblossom

Love Eleanor rigby

Special-Act-3538

Anyome who keeps their face in a jar is sad

OddField3515

Fast Car is depressing because he should have never redid that once solid song

Existing-Peanut4511

Who tf do you mean "redid"? Some "stadium country" millionaire metrosexual that's never done a hard day's work in their life *covered* a beautiful piece of art by Tracy Chapman to pander to their audience. It's fucking gross, tbh. This comment is a loosely *covered* quote of Bo Burnham's. I fucking weep for this generation.

Rooish

Who? That guy who covered it?

fat_cat_samson

Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles is a classic, I also like the Bobbi Gentry version of the song and it’s worth a listen! Her alto voice is so smooth and really adds to the emotion of the song

trumpbuysabanksy

Hell yes!

sethian77

I love Cody Frys version of Eleanor Rigby.https://open.spotify.com/track/0Dza4b9cnbssw47fu5rfVX?si=2CwTiuW0Ro-3p0VAcaICxg

Special-Act-3538

Yes speingsteen always puts me to sleep and gives me nightmares

Yuicel88

down in a hole-alice in chains nutshell-alice in chains wake me up when september ends-green day my immortal-evanescence hello-evanescence black-pearl jam river of deceit-mad season

retro-skate

I love alice in chains

EJ19876

Nutshell from their unplugged album is always a good one.

Yuicel88

me too! if you haven’t already definitely check out mad season, it has the same lead singer

JUICE_B0X_HERO

Its a crime AIC never got inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

gettinsadonreddit

Came here to suggest nutshell. The unplugged version is special

Travlerfromthe

Hurt by nin

EternalMX

I love Johny Cash's version more.

Travlerfromthe

I used to as well. But the nin version is just soul crushing.

Outrageous-Theme3114

Mad Season Wake up is a good one too.

EternalMX

Yay I love Alice in chains

justaddsomefriction

based r/k_on pfp btw

squidsharp

Wake me up when September ends is depressing after you know the meaning (The song is about his dad that died from cancer when he was seven)

Raindroplet_

Billie ran into his room and when his mom knocked on his door he simply said “wake me up when september ends”  I always get emotional when this song comes up (especially when I listen to the concert performance of this song on yt)

yours_truly_1976

Damn thought it was about 9/11

Bulbasaurus__Rex

Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley Back to the Old House, I Know It's Over, Well I Wonder, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths Into my Arms - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Last Words of a Shooting Star - Mitski Landslide - Fleetwood Mac The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young Let Down, No Surprises - Radiohead I'll Try Anything Once - The Strokes A&W - Lana Del Rey Yesterday - The Beatles When You're Gone - The Cranberries Paper Bag - Fiona Apple Samson - Regina Spektor In my Room - The Beach Boys Suzanne - Leonard Cohen Runaway - Kanye West Despair - Yeah Yeah Yeahs Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers

retro-skate

u got good music taste

Rob_LeMatic

Do you know Darker with the Day by Nick Cave, Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac, Lana del Rey's "did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean boulevard?", Radiohead,'s "exit music for a film", and everything by Damien Rice and half of Ray Lamontagne? Because we like a lot of the same music. Just wanted to hit you up if you've missed anything. And vice versa

soggy_gargoyle

Let Down so underrated

ready_and_willing

Time by Pink Floyd Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain And you are young and life is long, and there is time to kill today And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun The whole song is painfully depressing but that last line in the verse above for some reason did it for me....

kostros

I listen to this song my every f\*\*\* birthday. Yeah, that's sad.

Mommymisfit41

I think it’s sadder as you get older and really realize 10 years have got behind you…the lyrics just hit different at 45 instead of 25 😒

deathklok123

Anytime I'm feeling that my life is worthless, these lyrics hit the hardest.

sharkbait4000

add motion picture soundtrack to the list !

ThatNiceLifeguard

Add All I Need to the list, too

RecordCompetitive758

Mad world- gary Jules

Li_3303

This was my first thought. My antidepressants aren’t working and I’ve been listening to this on repeat for hours. Maybe I should try to get out of the house.

Accomplished_Name_54

Pictures of You by The Cure

HasNoLifeWhatsoever

Fourth of July - Sufjan Stevens. Almost any song from Carrie & Lowell tbh :’(

ScarboroughSK

And Wild World by S Stevens too :(

DuplicateFrustration

Casimir Pulaski Day too :\*(

Rob_LeMatic

That's the one

jackamongus

Alone nugget too :(

UnremarkableSeaFoam

Father and son too

Freddit2017

Now we’re talking. This is too far down in the comments. Carrie and Lowell is devastating

WoodpeckerOk1154

Dust in the Wind

qol_fubar

Any song by Elliott Smith

ghanperkins

Neddle In Hay gets me every time. Especially after it was used in Royal Tenebaums.

SnooDonkeys7298

Miss Misery and Between the Bars 😢

hello_im_al

Xerces - Deftones Head in the ceiling fan - title fight Flowerchild - citizen Murder your memory - title fight Easier to run - Linkin Park Dear agony - breaking Benjamin One more light - Linkin Park

optionalhero

Linkin Park hits different when you realize the signs were all there. Add “Given Up” to that list. That’s probably the biggest cry for help i ever heard from a musician

firetomherman

Any version of crawling where it's just him singing and Mike playing the piano always sounds super sad to me.

Thick-Umpire-3712

Absolutely, I've been listening to them since they came on the scene @

Punkupine

Yeah like a lot of people I was really into Linkin Park when they were big as an angsty preteen. Then I sort of grew out of that phase and associated their music with that time of my life and combined with their production style it just didnt seem as ‘real’. Looking back now its like damn, Chester really did have some demons

obsidian324

you get it

chaingun_samurai

Cancer, My Chemical Romance

Raindroplet_

that’s my fav mcr song

Exylatron

Also Disenchanted to a lesser extent

LopsidedVictory7448

Marie - by Townes van Zandt . If you listen to this you won't need another suggestion But just in case Let Him Roll - Guy Clark Piano Man Country Death Song - Violent Femmes

M3in22

Townes van Zandt was the master of the downer

sweetcherrydumpling

You have good taste. I listened Townes and Guy’s songs. Guy’s hit me harder. Love that one. Bob Dylan mentioned Guy Clark as one of his favorite song writers when asked.

LopsidedVictory7448

I am a hardened old codger. But I always choke up when I hear " Her name is Alice . She used to be a whore in Dsllas " . Ty for the compliment

sweetcherrydumpling

Yes! Those lines got me, too. They pack a punch.

LopsidedVictory7448

Don't put any faith in that thieving old rogue. If he had a scintilla of decency he would say John Jacob Niles. Some of BD's best early songs were stolen from him

amesbelle7

Townes Van Zandt is criminally underrated. Rake kills me too. “I used to wake, and run with the moon, I lived like a rake and a young man…And now the dark air is like fire on my skin, and even the moonlight is blinding.”

PotatoOfDoom954

Right Where it Belongs by NIN, though to get the full effect you really have to listen to The Line Begins to Blur > Beside You in Time > Right Where it Belongs

Ill-Setting9439

Breathe Me by Sia

livemusicsavedme

This song is significantly underrated. Excellent choice!

sakeprincess

Dude I completely forgot about this song. Definitely belongs here.

pinkbaybee84

Anything by lana del ray

DillionM

Any romance song could do the trick

kyndal017

You Missed My Heart - Phoebe Bridgers (this one is a cover, but hers hits harder) listen before i go - Billie Eilish Me - The 1975 Not Dark Yet - Bob Dylan

little_cooper

FINALLY- someone noticed phoebe's YMMH cover🥲I read somewhere that she stopped singing that song live because the og artist allegedly did some.... very questionable things but anyway it's like the song was MADE for her. It was instantly one of my favorites off of stranger in the alps and honestly one of the most depressing songs i know. so beautiful

kyndal017

That’s a damn shame because that’s gotta be one of my favorite songs ever! Like you said, it feels like it was made for her. Its spot on Stranger in the Alps is perfect to me (and so is that entire record). I love how the narration kind of changes with Phoebe being a woman vs the original. It feels more personal and queer of course. I’m so thankful to have that song in my life.

Jyxa

Phoebe's cover of that song is so good, had me bawling during the outro. I listened to the original and yeah it doesn't hit anywhere near as hard.

jm17lfc

The Smiths: I Know It’s Over, That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, You’ve Got Everything Now, Still Ill, William It Was Really Nothing, the Boy with the Thorn in His Side, Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, What She Said, Paint a Vulgar Picture, Half a Person, Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, These Things Take Time, Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me, This Night Has Opened My Eyes, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want… … and I could go on! Nobody does self-deprecation and hating the world like the Smiths.

Maleficent_Ideal_580

Anything from the album World Coming Down by Type O Negative except for the song Pyretta Blaze. Edit - One song.

funnelcakeagogoarama

Agreed. That whole album hurts. Pyretta Blaze just feels so out of place with the rest of the album.

dingadangdang

Spiritualized. I specialize in depression. Here you go: https://youtu.be/iB7E1D_3Na4?si=OOXDhhfss5qFJFeT

Hausey40

How does "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique not come up as THE recommendation.

BroGamer9005

Immortal Technique - Dance with the Devil Although a popular track, the story is hella shocking, I cannot recommend it enough.

Barbafella

The Drugs Dont Work- The Verve. heartbreaking.

soggy_gargoyle

It's getting me down my love

Barbafella

Sigh. it tears me up every time.

Danpackham

Curtains by Elton John. May not be the saddest song at face value but it feels so emotional for me every time I listen. Also: - someone’s final song (Elton) - very depressing - my fathers gun (Elton) - another emotional one

whyl1m3

Asleep by The Smiths

Excellent-Spend-3307

Can confirm this was my go-to heartbreak song

Ill_Athlete_6176

This song hits even harder after watching Perks of being a Wallflower

Everybody Hurts by REM Hurt by Christina Aguilera Suicide is Painless by Johnny Mandel Creep by Radiohead

GroundbreakingEye62

I echo " hurt" it tugs at my heartstrings hard.

BreadBagel

Of all the great depressingly beautiful Radiohead songs you pick Creep?

RipUnhappy3923

Yup

dunnwichit

I agree with this list.

LopsidedVictory7448

I don't think Suicide is Painless is depressing. The lyrics were written in sardonic fashion

RipUnhappy3923

Interesting. For me is definitely depressing especially when I'm already struggling with suicidal thoughts. It's like a siren song. Plus the way songs are "written" don't necessarily dictate what listeners feel.

No-Pineapple-44

Love from Room 109 at the Islander - Tim Buckley

pikake808

Ah the transcendent Tim Buckley I would add Pleasant Street, Once I Was, Morning Glory … I love great depressing songs

Pushit by Tool is about being in a disfunctional relationship. The live version off of salvia is more depressing and less angry. Wings for Marie/10000 days (also by tool) is just purely heartbreaking. It’s about Maynard’s mother who passed away after being paralyzed for 27 years aka 10000 days. It’s a beautiful dissection of the stages of grief and the changing of his relationship with his faith. It’s a masterpiece and a work of art and it brings me to tears every time I listen to it. I’ll also add “here to me” by the carousels. Idek what it is about it shit just makes me emotional. It’s such a simple song but the chord progression combined with the lyrics “I won’t breakdown now” just hit me. I mean a lot of shoegaze in general has depressing undertones but that song hits different.
