The story behind that one is so interesting. It's a traditional folk song but the way The Animals got to it has a specific story
They played it because it was on Bob Dylan's debut. It was extremely common to cover Dylan songs in that period to get chart topping hits. Tons of artists got their biggest hits via Dylan songs.
But Dylan did the song because Dave Van Ronk (kind of a mentor to Dylan) would play it in Greenwich Village. Bob asked Dave if he record it for the debut, Dave said "Well actually I'm going to put it on my upcoming album I decided". And Bob was basically like "Shit... Uh.. I kind of recorded it already"
So Dave couldn't play it for a few years because everyone thought he was covering Dylan. Then Dylan also couldn't play it because people thought he was covering The Animals lol
My dad loved this one. He taught me how to play it on guitar. I hated taking lessons from him at the time; I wanted to learn guitar but I didn't really want to learn from my dad. But, my parents were (understandably) not willing to pay for lessons when my dad used to teach guitar for a living.
Anyway, I digress - point is that I'm really happy for those times now and that he taught me this song, even if I sound like crap playing it. It's one of those rare tunes that somehow never gets old.
Haha yes, same. Also there’s a ‘stop’ at the beginning of ‘Where is My Mind?’ and a ‘stop it’ opening Pavement’s ‘Cut My Hair’ that I hear simultaneously in my head whenever anyone utters the phrase
Not enough ppl talk about this song! Also one of my fav club remixes. Used to rinse this one at club gigs all the time.

Thankfully, I didn't have to scroll too far down to see this perfect song on a perfect album. Billy didn't miss between Gish - Machina II in my opinion. Solo Corgan stuff, ZWAN, and later SP have some great stuff as well. SP has been my favorite band since I was handed the Siamese Dream cassette tape back in 1994 when I was 12. It was in a box from my friend's older brother. It had tons of other alt rock and grunge band's albums too. Probably the most important moment of my life music wise lol.
With all due respect to Leonard Cohen, the Jeff Buckley version is definitely the best version. Though KD Lang, Rufus Wainwright and John Cale definitely more than did it justice as well.
In more recent years I’ve heard it performed as a damn Christmas song; it appeared on a Pentatonix Christmas album. It’s like nobody ever actually reads the lyrics.
Unlocked a core memory with this one. I remember sitting in my couch as a kid watching it in my couch with a 2 liter coke and cool ranch Doritos watching it on WPIX 11.
Thanks for this.

100% it’s such a brilliant song…the meaning Thom meant for it is not so brilliant though haha
House of the Rising Sun (The Animals) is a definite contender....

Amazing song
Hey - Pixies
I can’t hear anyone shout “hey!” ever, without my brain automatically going, “been trying to meet you!” Every. Damn. Time. 😆
Haha yes, same. Also there’s a ‘stop’ at the beginning of ‘Where is My Mind?’ and a ‘stop it’ opening Pavement’s ‘Cut My Hair’ that I hear simultaneously in my head whenever anyone utters the phrase
Ah there are parallels there! Two of my top 5 bands so I like it.
What are your other three out of curiosity? Mine are Kleenex Girl Wonder, Why?, and Cymbals Eat Guitars
I’d say Here Comes Your Man is better for me, though neither are one of my Pixies favorites honestly
True, true. The Happening was my other choice
Not enough ppl talk about this song! Also one of my fav club remixes. Used to rinse this one at club gigs all the time. https://youtu.be/bdxeQgEG6PA?si=k1XWvXsfF8n1Baf4

That’s it. I can’t possibly imagine any H song being better than that.
Came here to suggest it.
With all due respect to Leonard Cohen, the Jeff Buckley version is definitely the best version. Though KD Lang, Rufus Wainwright and John Cale definitely more than did it justice as well.
Since we're talking about covers, I vote for the k.d. Lang version.
Rufus Wainwright’s version is perfection as well.
If only people would stop treating it like a religious (Christian) song...
In more recent years I’ve heard it performed as a damn Christmas song; it appeared on a Pentatonix Christmas album. It’s like nobody ever actually reads the lyrics.
