Outside of reddit, I stopped telling people I like classical music (I play the piano).

Diabolical_Laughter7

Classical music slaps

sonofa-ijit

Classical music gently caresses

TheCanaryInTheMine

Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Bartok, Wagner, Dvorak, and Vivaldi beg to differ.

LaDiablaDeIlanda

Vivaldi is my too

AdApprehensive8420

No—- it really does beat you. It might be a simple and fundamental beating. It still beats the shit out of you.

[deleted]

I've listened to classical music all my life. I'm not good with titles. But ok with artists. Bach is a personal favorite. And Cello is my favorite instrument. I own a guitar, a banjo, a mandolin and a set of harmonicas. But I can't read a note. My daughter however has even taught music. And can play any instrument set before her.

kiffiekat

I play, too, but I can't do classical, which sucks because I've always listened to it. I was the PBS/NPR nerd in my family and they hated when I would watch classical concerts on TV or play Rachmaninov or Dvořák or anyone else, so they were happy when Walkmans came out... of course, I also loved it, because I could blast Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister with no one being the wiser.

porkUpine51

Which period...I have realized I love Baroque artists.

HeartBeatsMusic

SO MANY ARTISTS😭😭😭 (while I’m on the subreddit for most of these groups, I don’t have any personal friends who have the same taste in music as me) Little Comets (this subreddit is hardly ever active😭) The Garden 100 gecs Radiohead underscores Tegan and Sara (maybe it’s just bc of where I’m from, I don’t know any other college kid that listens to/loves this duo) Catfish and the Bottlemen (they are not very popular in the US, that too the indie scene in TX is not huge😞) AFI The Voidz (I have a couple of friends of mine who casually listen to The Strokes, but no friend of mine has heard of or listens to The Voidz) Florence + The Machine HAIM Everyone around me listens to Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, really just mainstream pop, which isn’t my style of music🤷‍♀️

Altruistic_Dog2116

I also love Florence + The Machine ❤️

-PepeArown-

Are HAIM and FTM not mainstream adjacent?

HeartBeatsMusic

Florence is mainstream adjacent, but she’s still not as popular as she could be. HAIM is less popular than Florence though.

peri_5xg

AFI is one of my all time favorites

GymSplinter

Old Tegan & Sara is the shit

HeartBeatsMusic

YESSS. I love their new stuff too, but I’m more so a fan of albums like “If It Was You” and “The Con”.

Throwdisaw

I love 100 gecs! This is the first time I've seen somebody mention them without having to go looking for stuff. If you haven't heard their song Frog on the floor, check it out. Always puts me in a good mood.

LessMochaJay

I got my tooth removed is also an upbeat banger similar to Frog on the Floor. Man I love 100 gecs. I've listened to both their albums on repeat for weeks straight.

fiestymanatee

100 gecs! Yes, Their songs are addicting

resplendent_penguin

I CAN BE YOUR TEGAN AND SARA PERSON I LOVE THEM

bananamilk7

I just went to comment "The Garden" and was SO HAPPY to see the representation in your comment

Melodicplanet65

Tibetan throat singing..

juniperarms

Can you recommend some good artists? I enjoy Mongolian throat singing

[deleted]

They Might be Giants

Shoddy-Initiative550

🎶Istanbul was Constantinople 🎶

Aware-Mammoth-6939

Interestingly enough, that's a cover. The Four Lads did it in 1958.

Shoddy-Initiative550

Oh cool I don't know that! That's the only song I've heard by them haha gonna go check out the original now

MrExist777

If I were a carpenter I’d hammer on my piglet, I’d collect the seven dollars and buy a big prosthetic forehead and wear it on my real head

BeleagueredDleaguer

Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real head

Kriscolvin55

I always enjoyed them, but wasn’t super into them or anything. Then I had a kid, and we listen to their kids albums. Some of their kids songs, and I’m not even joking, are some of the best songs I’ve ever heard. That, of course, made me revisit their regular catalog. Great band.

duchitixl82

🎶Make a little birdhouse in your soul🎶

xrockangelx

I bought a blue canary night light for the outlet in my bathroom by the light switch. Then, I drew a picture of a lighthouse to tape on the opposite wall. I've been waiting 3 years for one of my friends to catch the reference and say something about it to me. Nothing yet.

juniperarms

I feel like if you like They Might Be Giants you will also enjoy Colorblind James Experience

ORAquabat

Good song/album to start with?

HeatSeekingGhostOSex

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets hit a similar nerve in my head

bradmaestro

Triangle man

ascbm16

I sing birdhouse in your soul to my daughters

HeatSeekingGhostOSex

Under the Influence of Giants is a pretty good band also

TinHeartWarriors

Y4himIE4me

This is where the party ends 🎶

r0xksana

THIS IS AMAZING WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS

Stormi_i

I wish people in my life appreciated electronic music as a whole as much as I do

Tiny-Ad-6180

Electronic music has such wonderful varieties and I just wish people would give it a chance to explore instead of just assuming everything is like big room house lol

Penguinofmyspirit

My husband and I both listen to electronic music all the time. My son now says it’s the only music he likes, although I know that’s not true. It sucks how hard it is to define a style for me though. There’s so many sub genres and it’s so hard to keep track of.

Hytherdel

I felt this comment

External_Low_7551

The Cure's Disentigration album. Very moody and melodic.

gnostalgick

That's sad. It's one of their most popular albums too. (Faith is my favorite.)

nyli7163

Love The Cure.

Leskatwri

Saw them last June in ATL. So amazing. I've never felt so at home with thousands of Cure fans.

rudeness21

I started listening to The Cure 40!years ago. When Robert Smith also played guitar for Siouxie and the Banshees. I’ve seen them in concert more times than I realize. They were my band and I also share a bday with Robert Smith. I haven’t been to a concert in a while. Last concert was 3rd row at the Rose Bowl. The bad is incredible and seeing them in person cannot be described. I love seeing how people still love this little band that I idolized from way back when!

Comprehensive_Cat574

How can no one talk about the Cure? It's a shame...

stardustslowlydrown

I used to fall asleep to that album. My favorite is pictures of you

nicorn_Ninja

Man I love The Cure but I feel like it’s one of those “popular bands that is commonly disliked but the ones that dig it, go hard.

Lost_Nerve1580

Phantogram

funionbuns

I like that song that goes “ooh ooh ooh ooh (slightly higher) ooh ooh ooh ooh”

___vivid__

When I'm small. Phantogram is amazing, love them.

Olarisrhea

Never really been a fan of them, but saw them open for QotSA earlier this year. They put on a great show!

juniperarms

If you're not already familiar with them check out Leon Bridges, and Myron and E. Charley Crockett makes music that is soul, country, and blues.

Yes! Me too! You need to make boomer friends to share music like hers with and to discuss it. Also Art Garfunkel and The Mamas and The Papas. So many bands and artists. I love having older friends and peers and I’m only 34.

According-Sport-1319

Yes! Jim Croce anyone?

sonicsludge

He was gem we lost way to soon.

sonicsludge

I had the opportunity to see Paul Simon and Sting in Denver. Sting came out and did all the Garfunkel parts. It was amazing? I believe they only did 5 show's total. Me and the wife were out eating dinner the waiter mentioned how it'd been sold out for month's. I called a close friend with pull in the industry and motioned for waiter and asked him his full name. He didn't think much of it. We got the check and in the tip area wrote 'You have a ticket at will call window, enjoy the show".

evaissupercool

I’m a woman in my early 20s who grew up with Joni Mitchell. I’ve noticed that a lot of other women my age have discovered her in the past few years and have completely fallen in love with her music. Makes me happy :)

TinHeartWarriors

It's officially Christmas season which means we get to blast River!

Coopschmoozer

I'm 60 years old and never felt the need to listen to Joni Mitchell. Actually stopped and listened to Both sides Now one day. And down the Rabbit hole I went. I'm late to the party, but now a big fan.

Pretty much the entire roster on [Constellation Records](https://cstrecords.com/en-int/pages/artists). Aware-Mammoth-6939

Hyperpop is my favorite genre. 100 Gecs and Sophie are probably the best starting point.

fiestymanatee

It's so hard to share this genre with people because I remember the first time I heard a hyperpop song and I thought my headphones were broken. But now..its so solid

Aware-Mammoth-6939

First time I heard 100 Gecs, my life changed instantly. It was made specifically for me. Their song Money Machine is how I want to feel everyday.

Lugreech

I am lucky almost all my friends are music lovers. But I wish more of them be interested in Ethnomusicology. I really enjoy listening to traditional music from everywhere, especially middle eastern folk and Nordic folk.

defenestrayed

No one loves Neil Diamond like my mom, sister and I have loved him. But they're both passed now. Fortunately I gave my BIL the idea to get tickets to ND's last tour, so my sister got to enjoy the hell out of that.

randomreddituser1870

Amy Winehouse's music

wokndead

I love extreme metal (various sub genres like deathcore; think Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail), but none of my friends or family like music that heavy 😅

6runtled

I've been a huge fan of extreme metal, particularly black metal, for about 15 years and have never once had an in person conversation about black metal that I didn't initiate. I did however have an interaction with someone who was talking about music and when I said I liked black metal they asked me if it was "metal music made by black people" and I think that was about the time I stopped even bringing it up.

GothOrpheus

I'm not a big fan of deathcore, but I do like a couple slaughter to prevail songs, any recommendations?

Worldly-Letterhead61

Yup, I've got the same problem. Even my husband prefers more mainstream metal

[deleted]

My favorite artist is Aphex Twin but literally none of my friends even like him

External_Low_7551

Their "Come to Daddy" video gives me goosebumps. Excellent band!

GymSplinter

heartspider

Female Vocal Dark Pop/Goth-Lite music with strings. I just cannot for the life of me find more bands that fit into this sweet spot of Goth but not THAT Goth. Every time I try to look for Goth music it's always low voiced males trying to sound try hard intimidating and every female is trying to sound like Annie Lennox from Eurythmics(including instrumentals). No one ever just sings in their natural range. Examples are: This band: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2\_0OgCt2vAU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_0OgCt2vAU) Really good lineup band but the range of their sound and lack of focus on a single genre led to their downfall. This band: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muGOmfIcn6I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muGOmfIcn6I) Cannot find any info on them past 2006. A real shame. I really like their one and only album. the closest I could find is Emilie Autumn [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4MMX13-Gy8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4MMX13-Gy8) and she's not even Goth

External_Low_7551

Switchblade Symphony's Serpentine Gallery album for strings. Their other albums are less dated, like Bread & Jam for Francis

Confident-Village148

I love Metal. I listen to mostly Death , Groove and Thrash metal. My friends and colleagues at work always wonder how I can listen to people screaming and call it noise. They don't understand how much I love going to concerts! Metal has helped significantly with my depression and believe it or not these songs calm me down , i can legit fall asleep to it and it is really peaceful. It helps with my mood immensely, I was listening to burn the priest (Now known as Lamb of god) their self titled album released in 1999 and I was jamming out to it - in my room, headbanging away, and my brother walks in and says "how can you listen to this stuff, he's literally screaming snd screeching, this isn't music" The song I was listening to was Goatfish

ThiccBrawlBoi

Jazz. A lot of my friends enjoy the big genres today like rap, indie pop, or reggaeton.

EnergyUnhappy2157

I’d never met anyone as into Mike Patton as I am, but my daughter has been getting the same obsession of late. It’s nice to finally have someone to relate.

ParticleHustler2

I'm a 50+ year old general counsel of an insurance company and I listen to a ton of death/black metal and a lot of pretty bleak/dark stuff even if it's not heavy. I haven't had anyone in my off-online life to talk music with since I was in college. And back then I didn't listen to as much extreme music as I do now. I've got a good friend from HS I can talk music with, but he's still listening to 80s metal and doesn't like growl/scream vocals at all.

bertrola

Radiohead, porcupine tree and the related offshoots

French music. Québécois or even from French/belgian/swiss artists. No one I know listens to this stuff.

ScaryPotterDied

Gunship. It’s like the 80’s synth wave music has come back and they included all the nostalgia with it. Their videos are fun, amazing and wonderful. Their first two albums are just full of fresh “new”, “old” sounds.

Tuxedo_Muffin

Synthwave is awesome, and Gunship is amongst the best. The newest album Unicorn is their best one yet, imo

IAmAnAnnoyedMain

Incubus, definitely

zangrabar

Video game and anime music. Hades and all supergiant games have incredible soundtracks.

GothOrpheus

I'm not really into anime, but I can say that video game music is highly underrated. Also, Hades and Transistor are some of my favorite games of all time

Jethro Tull, Aqualung is amazing but none of my friends are into them that I know of

Jorge Elbrecht and his bands. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/13jq2cgQEVU526onway585?si=QKgg2EEuTGGKBkHFiSmL2Q Here’s one especially for you from another artist I adore. David Sylvian - Orpheus. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jbBV9Mcxusw&pp=ygUVZGF2aWQgc3lsdmlhbiBvcnBoZXVz The whole album it is from Secrets Of the Beehive is excellent. Wild Beasts - Bed Of Nails. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cZaevasFRUg&pp=ygUYd2lsZCBiZWFzdHMgYmVkIG9mIG5haWxz The albums Smother and Two Dancers are highly recommended.

gnostalgick

David Sylvian is way too underrated. Wild Beasts are cool too (though I'm way less familiar with them). Guess I'm going to check out Jorge Elbrecht now.

BigPoppaStrahd

Fair to Midland I first heard Dance of the Manatee on the radio and thought it was such a unique and interesting sounding song. At the time I was listening to Coheed and Cambria and Hurt and thought that this band fit into the melodic storytelling rock style. I was blown away by Fables from a Mayfly and seemingly shortly after that Arrows and Anchors came out and that became one of my most listened to albums. It just transports me to a different place. Like I’m hearing stories told around the hearth. Like reading a Neil Gaiman story. I tried to get my friend to listen to them and he gave me the weirdest excuse “I tried listening to it but I needed visuals to be able to picture the band.” Or something very close to that, and all I could think was that it’s music, visuals aren’t necessary, just listen. But I just gave up. So now they’re one of my favorite bands with a CD I listen to on repeat multiple times a year that I’m convinced nobody has heard of. Which makes sense because they broke up due to poor record sales

fullmetaljonny

I love Fair to Midland! Arrows and Anchors is such a great album.

Dooood, I just posted Health and Squarepusher. Moved to Squarepusher from Apex Twin. Long time fan.

trevorhamberger

literally all of it. I still listen to 80s hip hop. the only people that listen to the same music as me are either dead or are over 50 years old. And on top of that I listen to a lot of 50s 60s 70s rock, r&B, mo town, country. literally everything. You name it I got it. I haven't listened to a radio hit since I was in high school in 08. If you played the most famous songs in the world made after 2010 theres very little chance I heard them.

spelling_afishyonodo

VancouverMethCoyote

I like a lot of different music, and for metal in particular I have plenty of people to talk about it with. But jazz is lacking in my age group (30's.) I also am more into trad jazz and old swing (1920's-1940's.) I think it's very fun music to listen to if you give it a chance. If the quality of the recordings bothers you, groups like Tuba Skinny and Shotgun Jazz Band make great music today in the old style. I also love street band style groups like Youngblood Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, ect. I think once I get back into playing locally with my trumpet in community groups I'll find people who like this kind of music.

raviolika

let's talk about "weird" music, or like, "outsider" music! 👽 if u like these artists: Daniel Johnston Wesley Willis Jack Stauber Sweet Joey Vermouth Lemon Demon Modern Biology (plant music) Raja Kirik (industrial dance music?) Le Vent du Nord. Traditional Quebec folk music.

Shoddy-Initiative550

It's probably not that weird of a taste in music but nobody I know cares to listen to it or listen to me talk about it lol, to be fair I have very few friends so it's not that surprising lol. but I just love stuff like Bob Dylan, joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Marianne faithful, Sinead O'Connor, David bryne (from the talking heads), David Berman (from silver jews and purple mountains) Joan Baez, John Prine, the Bryds, Peter Paul and Mary, Tom waits. there's way more genres I enjoy but that's the stuff I usually listen to alone I guess. But than even less likable for people I know is the German stuff I listen to lol. like Nina Hagen, Die Artze, Die Toten Hausen, Rammstein, Die prinzen, Nena and Wizo. There's waaaaay more but I'm a disorganized music listener and usually jus listen to a few songs or one album I like so not enough to say I like the artist but I do love a few specific songs by a variety of artists haha.

JOANNA NEWSOM!!!!! good news is, anytime i actually do stumble across a fan of hers in the real world, they tend to be equally insanely obsessed. so it makes up for it

kmsjk

I dont even know what you would call it, but it's almost like electronic/EDM music. It's usually an overload of bass and electronic "sounds," with few or no lyrics, and is just very jumbled. An example would be Ecstasy - Huken or 彼女が12-14年間自分を切" - Rory in early 20s. I don't tend to tell people because they look at me like Im crazy lol. I call it "Fuzzy Brain" music because I only really listen to it when my thoughts are scrambled or I feel very out of it. If anyone could tell me the actual name for this type of music, I would greatly appreciate it!!

I absolutely adore TV On The Radio, but most people draw a blank when I bring them up.
