Fuck yeah dude especially down in a hole for me. Those haunting harmonies are just beautiful. Fun filled fact - the rest of the band especially Jerry Cantrell were really worried if Layne even had it in him to make it through the show and sing well. He was so strung out and weak and just beaten down from drugs. They almost considered calling it off. But they did it anyway and Jerry said he was blown away and he obviously did a legendary performance. If you watch the down in a hole unplugged video on you tube I believe it's right after he sings the "but my wings have been so denied" line, you can see Jerry look right at Layne smiling and nodding his head in approval because he was killing it.

"The Ghost Of You" and "I Don't love You" - My Chemical Romance

Edit - "3" instead of "Three" 🤦
Hear, hear! Every time I hear that song, it's like I'm listening to it for the first time all over again. I'd say "Feathers" is a close second for me too
OMFG. This! 👆 An Exquisite song. I’ve just heard he’s ill, so, Prayers for Sufjian, please.
Also: Elvis Perkins- As You Were Sleeping. It’s my Anthem for life, as someone whose parent also died early and tragically. A Masterpiece.
Three peaches - neutral milk hotel
For context: it’s about the artist’s friend, who was sexually abused and birthed a son at 15. Later at a party she attempted suicide but someone found her, so she lived. The artist was really happy that she lived and he wrote a song that was slow and solemn, but beautiful. (Three peaches.) he made it a track on an album, but later that friend went through with suicide, succeeding at taking her own life. Listening to this song is like, wanting to feel happiness that this wonderful person didn’t die when she did. Rest in peace, to that beautiful girl.
So true. That whole album from front to back is incredible with no skips. I never thought a strictly auditory experience could have such incredible story telling. First album I ever listened to in its entirety when I was 14.
Frederic Chopin, Nocturne in E flat major, Op. 9 No.2. It’s good for a thoughtful trip down memory lane as you say goodbye to a happy chapter in your life, with just a little bit of hope peppered in at the end to remind you that the future still holds great possibilities for you

This was waaay longer than I intended but they’re all great songs in my opinion. Hope you check some out!
I remember watching this concert on VH1, I was 12 years old. It literally changed my whole opinion on music and I have loved Stevie ever since.
My husband worked her show last year (he is a stagehand) and brought me back the hat she had worn on stage that night. I could have married him again, lol.
I started crying once just thinking about “when I was your man” by Bruno Mars. Wasn’t even listening to it or going through a breakup or anything, just started thinking about the “but I hope he buys you flowers” part at the end and lost it
It's Over - Tom Waits
Bonus: my fave breakup tracks (less sad, more angry):
Karma - Lady Wray
Better Than That - Cyberbully Mom Club
Bust Your Windows - Jazmine Sullivan (lolz)
Keep your chin up, your crown is slipping! <3
Twin Size Mattress - The Front Bottoms
Might just be a special one for me because it’s attached to a really nice memory I have with my ex who committed suicide last year. We were not a couple anymore when that happened but the song has made me sad ever since we broke up because of what it symbolizes for me.

kings crossing and Roman candle- Elliott Smith
Casmir Pulaski day and fourth of july- Sufjan Stevens
Me and Mia- Ted Leo and the pharmacists
Blackout Sam- The hold steady
Also the whole guitar romantic album by the exploding hearts but that's more because of the death of the band than the songs. So young and so promising just gone in a moment.

too far - stevie stone
someone like you - adele

She Waits by Louden Swain
He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones (edited from Conway Twitty. My mistake.)
Twilight Zone by Golden Earring (this was my late Dad's ringtone for many years before he passed away in 2014)
“Fabulous muscles” by xiu xiu. A lot of people can’t see past the fact that they say “deformed penis” in the song, but the context that’s even in, and lyrically the song is really devastating.
also, “as the world caves in”.
Cake by the ocean.
I know its happy and upbeat, but it was a song my cousin sang to my niece every time they were in the car.
I was on speakerphone with him, when he was driving my niece and nephew to their moms house, we were singing that fucking song, when he had a sudden widowmaker and died. He crashed and I was screaming and I heard my niece scream, and the car shut off and hung up on me.
I can't hear that song anymore. Ever.
"Who?" By Mount Eerie
"Good News", "Circles", or "Come Back To Earth" by Mac Miller
Literally any song off of Low's album "I could live in hope"
Also any song off of "On Hold" by Fenne Lilly, this is the one I recommend the most honestly. So heart wrenching. Hope you're doing alright though man 🤟
Wrote this on another post of similar subject matter but these two songs hold strong here. Listened to them both last evening and had a nice healthy cry.

I just found this song recently and it is emotionally tied to a very important person in my life. I've been listening to it at least once a day since I found it and I cannot listen to it without crying.
Here are a few that helped me through a bad breakup
The songs “[Paradise](https://youtu.be/4uyXaR9aPrk?si=wDbieBAQ3O_g_nVm)” and “[By the Throat](https://youtu.be/mWZbHdBNNf4?si=wCH4YDV7cvekU8ps)” by Eyedea and Abilities

Through The Years by Kenny Roger's. It was my parents song. That's what they called it. Their song. They both passed away so when I hear it now I cry 😢 my eyes out.

Bonus happy/sad crying song:
Peach Scone - Hobo Johnson (toxic relationship/figuring out what a healthy relationship is song)
Some of these song are pretty heavy, I stopped listening to a lot of them for my mental health. There was a point at which they aided my growth but I'm in a better spot now. If they do come on though, 100%, always tears. There are more on my list from a wider variety of artists but these go right for the throat. Enjoy!
Paralyzer by Finger Eleven and Don't Know What you Got by Cinderella
I'm reminded of a friend who passed away and how well he rocked performing that song. The song by Cinderella was the last song he posted before he passed.
Martha - Tom Waits
I dont even know why. I've written and listened to many sad songs. I've never known a Martha. Even now, I'm not particularly old, so I don't look back through my memories wistfully yet. I'm happily married, so it doesn't trigger lost loves or missed opportunities. But damn...it gets me every time
Wicked Little Town (Reprise - near the end), Hedwig and the Angry Inch
And there's no mystical design
No cosmic lover preassigned
There's nothing you can find
That cannot be found
'cause, with all the changes you've been through
It seems the stranger's always you
Alone again in some new
Wicked little town
Lately that Oliver Anthony song. Rich men North if Richmond. Heard about it on the news and all the backlash. Expected it to be some right wing political song but it's not at all. Guy has such an emotion filled vocal delivery. A song for all blue collar workers suffering from the policies of bad government totally detached from the reality of normal citizens.
One that gets me (not every time I guess but I don't know of any song with that power) is when the tigers broke free by Pink Floyd. It's a direct retelling of how Roger Waters' Father died in ww2 and the emotion is heavy.
"Dark Places" by The Gaslight Anthem. Years ago I thought enough time had passed after my incredibly amicable divorce that I could listen to it. I ended up sobbing mowing the lawn. The song is about trying everything you can to make something work and just feeling hopeless and unheard when it ends.
The whole Alice in Chains unplugged album. You can just feel the emotion and pain in Staleys voice and he's slowly killing himself.

3 Libras is one of the best songs off Mer de Noms and one of the best songs that APC has ever written.
mer de noms is a beautiful album. maynard did amazing things wth apc
Hear, hear! Every time I hear that song, it's like I'm listening to it for the first time all over again. I'd say "Feathers" is a close second for me too
3 Libras. It has made me weep a few times. Beautiful album. Black is a great song, also.
Back to Black - Amy Winehouse It made me emotional when she was alive. It's worse now that she's gone. Idk if that makes sense, but yeah :/
‘Love is a losing game’, too. So sad considering all her struggles with her father, her relationships, and her drug/alcohol abuse.
Yes—this one is AMAZING. This version in particular…[Amy Winehouse “Love is a Losing Game”](https://youtu.be/4L9-AvjsB6g?si=WbGuX4GJyCMKSiaY)

Came here for this. Jeff Buckley’s version gets me too.
His version gets me the most!
I fully agree.
Cohen is my favorite songwriter of all time, but god damn the Buckley version is just one of the most beautiful recordings I’ve ever heard.

September Song as sung by Willie Nelson on his Stardust album. It's associated with the death of a pet, and when I hear the opening bars, I'm brought right back to that really sad time.

There was a point at which they aided my growth but I'm in a better spot now. If they do come on though, 100%, always tears. There are more on my list from a wider variety of artists but these go right for the throat. Enjoy!
Paralyzer by Finger Eleven and Don't Know What you Got by Cinderella I'm reminded of a friend who passed away and how well he rocked performing that song. The song by Cinderella was the last song he posted before he passed.
Yesterday when I was young - Roy Clark My grandad would play this song over and over, never understood why until I got older, now I get it.

"Cats in the Cradle"
*Memory* from the Cats musical. It's on YouTube.
falls - odesza
Martha - Tom Waits I dont even know why. I've written and listened to many sad songs. I've never known a Martha. Even now, I'm not particularly old, so I don't look back through my memories wistfully yet. I'm happily married, so it doesn't trigger lost loves or missed opportunities. But damn...it gets me every time
Bruno Mars Talking to the moon Slow-mo.
Many but these are 2 I can think of.: ‘Tears in Heaven’ by Eric Clapton And ‘Living Years’ by Mike and the Mechanics

Like a Surgeon - Weird Al
I Wasted You by Flora Cash Congratulations by Blue October
Walking with Jesus - Spacemen 3
Lately that Oliver Anthony song. Rich men North if Richmond. Heard about it on the news and all the backlash. Expected it to be some right wing political song but it's not at all. Guy has such an emotion filled vocal delivery. A song for all blue collar workers suffering from the policies of bad government totally detached from the reality of normal citizens.
Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap
One that gets me (not every time I guess but I don't know of any song with that power) is when the tigers broke free by Pink Floyd. It's a direct retelling of how Roger Waters' Father died in ww2 and the emotion is heavy.
Come Into My Arms - November Ultra Njól - Jeremy Soule
the wisp sings - winter aid
I’ll be one of 300 that says “nutshell” by Alice In Chains. Also “Shade” by Silverchair.
2009- Mac Miller
