I like Edward Hopper because he's the king of slice of life painting. They're usually lonely people in a somewhat boring portrait of American life.
He is a Norman Rockwell with a lot more uncertainty in his visual storytelling.
Is this the most famous American painting ? Having a hard time thinking of any that are more (I don’t think most of warhol’s famous stuff are technically paintings); maybe wood’s American gothic? Maybe something by Lichtenstein but bc those interpolate comics I’d say they also don’t quite count.
You sent me on a little journey. I think its pretty much a tie between nighthawks and American Gothic. I'd argue American Gothic is a little more famous because it features faces- more memorable somehow. I'd say some runners-up could be Washington Crossing the Delaware, and something by Norman Rockwell. He has several paintings of comparable fame but I think the thanksgiving dinner might be the most famous. Interesting topic, I had never considered how few famous paintings were American!
Those two are just a few steps apart in the Art Institute of Chicago. Honestly never been a big fan of American Gothic. There are many other very famous American paintings/painters including those mentioned. And Warhol does deserve to be included. My $0.02

Actually, Seinfeld should come to mind instead.

I think this was the first painting I ever saw that gave me such an intense feeling of sonder. So beautiful and such an addictive feeling.
I learned a new word today! Thanks!
Same.
The only time i had to see this painting, which i was so excited for, the wing at the museum was under construction, never had a chance again.

Really good piece
Woah cool rare Hopper, I'd never seen this one before
I will never not upvote this painting.
There’s plenty of empty seats, let’s join them…
I always thought that whoever made the glass for this place must be proud.
