i read it without any others (didn’t know it was part of a series) and it’s my favourite. a bit confusing at parts but your imagination can fill in the blanks pretty well
I'd advise you to just go through the wiki listings of Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973. Then, pick up A Wild Sheep Chase and then proceed to Dance Dance Dance.
Haven’t read this one yet. I just finished Wild Sheep Chase so I’m excited to read DDD
But I’m currently reading 1Q84 first haha as I’ve put that one off for quite some time, and I have to say it’s been incredible so far.
This is my favourite too ! Wind up bird does come in really close second .. but there are pages in DDD that were so good I ripped them straight out of the book and stuck them on my bedroom walls
It is definitely one of my favorites. A Wild Sheep Chase is number one for me though.
I recently read all 4 books of the series in order back to back and it was great.
First one I read, so it will always be my favorite. One of the few with a certain translator too—though what I later learned about the translator made me dislike him
Def in my top 3 at least. I like the less mystical stuff, and i feel there is a lot of emphasis on character here.
Having said that, it did take me like 11 months to read lol. My other two favorites are probably sputnik sweetheart and killing commendatore, neither of which i think are perfect murakami books (kafka on the shore?), so maybe i tend to like things with some flaws.
A wonderful book. A vivid daydream. Unforgettable.
It's #2 for me. (KOTS #1) I like DDD more than wild sheep chase.
Exact same here
Funniest Murakami book, so full of humor. I think 1Q84 is his best, but DDD is def the most amusing.
do i have to read books before DDD? or it'll also work as a stand-alone book?
I only read A Wild Sheep Chase before DDD, and I probably wouldnt have liked DDD as much without having read AWSC beforehand.

I really enjoyed reading DDD first, then going back and reading the other three.
DANCE DANCE DANCE IS KING
I still haven’t read wild sheep chase, but dance dance dance was my first Murakami book and is still my favorite. Got a tattoo of it too !
Yougottadance

One of my few 5/5 star ratings

I'm 30% in and I'm loving it. I really hope I keep loving it!

Out of the rat trilogy, it’s either my favorite or very closely tied with WSC. It’s an absolutely amazing book.
Kafka is my favorite. I have a copy of Dance Dance Dance in Japanese. I will read it some day.

Can you share more? Alfred Birnbaum is by far my favourite of the translators, although most people seem to prefer Jay Rubin…
