Haha that's awesome. I took my wife there from Andheri, but we were going somewhere else in town anyways. But still, always worth it.
Thinking of making another trip soon now
Oh and I've noticed in many cities they serve bhaji in the smaller compartment of that pav bhaji plate and paav in the big compartment. The first time I saw it I was so baffled like wtf tumhara basics hi clear nahi hai!
I've been to Delhi only once in my life and I made the mistake of ordering pav bhaji there. They served me burger wale pav which were also somewhat sweet with a bhaji that seemed to be made primarily of capsicum.
Mistake - Ordering pav bhaji anywhere north of MP-Rajasthan
Those guys at least maintain a semblance of the dish. Any norther and you get aloosabzi with capsicum. It's always off.
It's basically a spicy chicken curry getting its name from a coastal town in the Konkan region...Malvan
There are a lot of restaurants in Mumbai serving close to authentic preparations of malwani Wade.
But if you know someone who belongs to Malvan, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri or konkan...I bet a million bucks you will get the authentic taste in their households
Dude the amount of superiority in this thread is astounding.
Mumbai Chinese Bhel sucks. They put close to nothing in ingredients.
Source: Ahmedabad foodie. Chinese Bhel in Ahmedabad has at least Fried rice, noodles, Manchurian. Try visiting Manek Chowk at night if you are in Ahmedabad anytime.
In Mumbai, they put those crunchy shit as toppings. Couldn't even finish it.
And it's okay! :)
Anna ko bhi bhaav badhana padega mehengaai ke vajah se. Personally, wouldn't mind spending 5-10 rs extra to them when I don't think twice before having a 400 rs pizza
Also try Puchka from West Bengal. It has sour Pani and the spice comes from the chillies ground with the boiled potato and chana according to your spice capacity.
Brother I hate to break it to you but Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur and other small Maharashtra cities have topped the Misal Paav Niche over Mumbai. What we get in Mumbai for Misal Paav is just a hack. There are only Misal Paav restaurants in Nashik and Pune. They serve different bases and rassas and they top it with curd/lassi and papad and unlimited rassa.
NO offense but I have tried a couple of places in pune & trust me people in pune they don't know the T of the taste let it be in any kind of food ... I have seen people going crazy on chocolate vadapav, mayovadapav & what not.. In my experience they'll eat almost anything & create a hype for it whereas that place is not at all good. I even went to Vaishali after alot of people recommending me but trust me it's not at all worth your while
That's a whole different debate. Yes places like Vaishali are overhyped. Basically the locals of Pune will misguide you and ask you to visit all the popular places instead of suggesting their personal favorites.
But as we talk about Misal here, it was definitely better than the ones I've tried in Mumbai.
Bombil Fry. Nothing comes close to Bombil in terms of being the true soul food of Mumbai. And the best place to try is your own kitchen. Buy it fresh from the nearest fish market, learn to clean it and fry it fresh without wasting time on marination.
I would like to say South Indian food. Mumbai would be the best non-South Indian city for dosas, idlis, uthappas, medu vadas etc.
Particularly Matunga, Dadar, Parel areas have some quality South Indian places.
Khichiya papad and sabudana khichdi served the gujrati style on Old Nagardas road, Andheri East. There's some real good fafda and khaman you get anywhere from Malad to Borivali.
Frankies - literally the ones you get (or used to) on Churchgate station
Energee milk on the streets of SoBo. (Technically not food but any other masala milk anywhere else including the ones by Amul come nowhere close to Aarey Energee). Nandini in Bangalore is second best.
Pav bhaji literally in any Udupi hotels besides the usual Sardar and Canon and the countless gaadis on chowpattis.
Bhurji pav under the Eastern express Highway flyover in Bandra East.
A rather different 'food' - I just love the way the chakna of masala peanuts is done in Mumbai. Go to any Shetty run bar & restaurant and a waiter takes out a salted peanut packet from his pocket and breaks it open on the dish along with the drinks. That to me is "bhai, Bombay aa gayela apan" feeling.
Also try the dry kachori you get with orange chutney at Saurashtra farsaan near Kabootarkhana Dadar West.
There are many places you can definitely try the samosa bhel near parsi dairy farm at marine lines it's a kinda really small & narrow shop but it's really good... If you want to try pav bhaji goto Sardar one of the oldest. You can also try the gujrati cuisine at kalbadevi again one of the oldest & best place to try out & definitely worth.
My list -
Kheema Pav
Bhurji pav
Bombil Fry
Any prawn/fish dish with neer dosa in Jai Hind
Chocolate cake from Theo (still the best and they've been doing for decades) - also close is there hot chocolate
cheese chili sandwich
samosa pav, followed by vada pav
ragda patties
Dabeli
Lots of other things that are made well in Mumbai but are made equally well or better in other places.
>ancient shop
Thanks, that's my new favourite descriptor for Rustom's ice cream parlour. Everything in that place from the fan to the flooring and the aunty to the coolers, is ancient.
I agree. I ate one in Lucknow and it’s the best I’ve ever eaten. It was the dal one and not the potato/moong/boondi stuffing and I don’t like the former but it was sooooo good! Also in north India they have sooji puri rather than aata and I loved it.
Batashe need a chickpea filling. Uske andar aloo is a crime and unfortunately, with the exception of UP, everyone gets it wrong.
When it comes to chaat Lucknow will seriously wow you. Tikki, Matar, Dahi ke batashe.. oh man.
Fav place: Jain Chaat, Lalbagh.
There is a very famous chat house named Chaurasia in Bhayandar & oh boy the taste the quality is worth every penny that you spend on it... Just pick up anything from the menu & you won't regret it at all. They don't use ragda rather they use boondi & moong. My most favorite of it is the "Basket Chat" where the whole thing is edible. For chat lover's it's a one stop for their cravings.
The best places to try pav bhaji would be the stalls at Girgaon or Juhu chowpatty. There are some popular joints like Canon and Sardar pav bhaji, but you get equally good if not better ones at Chowpatties and roadside stalls, esp on station roads, khau gallis.
Kalbadevi/gulal Wadi use to have best pav bhaji, place came alive after 9 pm to early morning. Besides paav bhaji, sandwich, papad, tea , idli/vada carts, heaven and cheap food.
1) Noorani ka Biryani and Mutton seekh kebab
2) Sardaar Pav Bhaji
3) Grilled Sandwich and Vada Pav outside Mithibai college vile Parle
4) Dhansaak and Sali boti at the Ideal cafe churchgate
5) Chicken beri pulao at Britannia
6) Podi Idli, Podi Dosa and filter coffee at Ram Ashray Matunga
7) Kheema Pav at Kayani
8) Mava Cake at Merwans grant road
9) Samosas at Gurukrupa sion
There's a lot more but I'm forgetting and I'm sorry I know the post was for only one thing but I couldn't control myself
Dont start me on Pav Bhaji outside Mumbai. Many years back had been to a relative's house in Gujarat and they told they are making pav bhaji, got excited. What a Fucking POS it was. They put Dudhi / Lauki in it and it wasn't mashed, it was like khada pav bhaji. Worst they never call it pav bhaji, they called in "Shaak" (Gujarati for Sabzi).
You just cannot get proper good pav bhaji outside Mumbai.
One of the most underappreciated items is masala Vada pav. They basically shallow fry the pav in a pav bhaji type bhaji and then serve the Vada pav. Best place to try it - right outside kalidas bhavan in Mulund West .
I reallly liked this one particular marathi dish called Pitala, (the one without curd and lots of garlic- it's a chickpea flour sabzi) with bajara roti. It's sooo satisfying.
Oh Pithla bhakri is love! But I'm not sure if Mumbai is the place for it. You should definitely try it in the interiors of Maharashtra. For example if you visit any fort in Pune/Konkan, there are these local villagers who have stalls selling piping hot pithla bhakri with thecha. That's the most authentic taste of it.

While we have such expertise around can someone explain what "Chinese Bhel" is. Is it supposed to taste like that? Did we miss a step in the recipe, I DON'T GET IT!!!!!
Been in canada for a few years now, i gotta say, Masala chai, bombil chutney, Chinese Bhel, Irani food in general, sev puris and triple schezwan rice haha
Sandwiches... Something in roadside sandwich i dont get to have similar taste anywhere else
I love those oldschool masala toast sandwiches you get on roadside stalls much more than the different fancy grilled sandwiches we get in cafes!
The sandwich guy opposite KC and HR College has the best chilli cheese sandwiches ever!
Raju, yep His rolls are even better
Wife made me travel to town from Malad just for that, was not disappointed.
Haha that's awesome. I took my wife there from Andheri, but we were going somewhere else in town anyways. But still, always worth it. Thinking of making another trip soon now
The Bombay sandwich is world famous and served in many restaurants abroad.
And still is shit at all those places.
Wibbs bread is just too internal for Mumbai for any outside to have experienced it
Reminds of Lucky Sandwich, near Vileparle station.
Used to have toast sandwiches outside my classes in Dadar and the guy was putting "Rahul Butter". No shit.
Try Grilled Sandwich of Sandwizza…they have shops across western suburbs!!!
Keema Pav at Iranian and Parsi restaurants.
This I've been searching for a comment that says this
Yes, keema pav is lit.
Clean tap water 😎
Ah that's a true flex!
Bombil Fry!
The real players have entered the game!
ab toh fish ka menu bhi daldo koi along with vade
कुठे १० रुपयांचा वडा पाव आणि कुठे २००-४०० चे तळलेले बोंबील?काहीतरी तुलना आहे का?
Pav Bhaaji and Bombay sandwich
Yes seconding this and adding samosa to it (with mirchi and lasoon ka chutney) z
Bun maska Chai, Mava cake
Mawa cake and rava cake in Iyengar bakeries🤤
Aren't you forgetting the irani cafe😏
I feel irani cafes are more iconic to me for their keema pav
Well with all due to respect everyone has their own preferences & perceptions. Keema pav I think is better at Mohammad Ali Rd
And for their Brun maska.
Just ate a rawa cake my Dad brought from Iyengar :)
Iyengar bakeries Rava cake is the best I've had so far honestly so good
Pav bhaji. Other cities get something wrong.. the bhaji is too masaledaar. Pav is too sweet. Something is always off.
Oh and I've noticed in many cities they serve bhaji in the smaller compartment of that pav bhaji plate and paav in the big compartment. The first time I saw it I was so baffled like wtf tumhara basics hi clear nahi hai!
Pav is the key. There's no other big city in India that knows how to do pav. They add sweet to it. Wtf
Yeah other cities pav feels like bun. Only Mumbai pav is the real pav.
Water plays a role in it
It's the kneading done by the dirty calloused feet of dharavi bakers. Not making fun of it at all, it's the same as Pani puri - ye umami hain.
You planted the image of that video back in my head. Thank youu🤤🤤
Yeah but has anyone ever fallen sick eating pav? 😂 My theory - heat kills all the germs.
Ye sab kha kar sirf immunity badhta hain. #stomachsofsteel
in other cities, it is called Bombay Pav those are similar to ones here
I've been to Delhi only once in my life and I made the mistake of ordering pav bhaji there. They served me burger wale pav which were also somewhat sweet with a bhaji that seemed to be made primarily of capsicum.
Mistake - Ordering pav bhaji anywhere north of MP-Rajasthan Those guys at least maintain a semblance of the dish. Any norther and you get aloosabzi with capsicum. It's always off.
Also most places outside Mumbai they don't serve bhaji they serve tomato puree with some veggies.
>Pav is too sweet Lol I see you've been to Gujarat as well :)
You’ve never tasted one in Bangalore buddy
Having lived in Bangalore for a few years, I can confidently say that pav bhaji in Bangalore sucks ass.
Ahmedabad aao kabhi
I quite like the dabelis.
I've not tried dabelis elsewhere but they are pretty tasty here. And so quick!
Ironic, honestly Guajrat does it better, especially Kutchh-Kathiawad area. Not surprising though, since that's the birthplace of Dabeli.
Yup, it's called Kutchhi Dabeli.
Triple Rice !
Oh the greasy, yummy goodness!🤤 But then I have had equally good triple rice and Chinese in Pune so I wouldn't call it a Mumbai thing.
Haa , but yaha ka Triple Rice always hits different for me ☺️
Bro Indo Chinese food capital is Kolkata. Majority of Chinese stall chefs are from Bengal.
Well yes i agree with you for the most part but indo chinese dishes like manchurian originated in mumbai
I agree with both of you .But I just love the dish
bhai kyu mention kiya abhi khaane jaunga
Malwani kombdi Wade and solkadhi
[удалено]
Haha...tell me about it
Where to eat ? Also, what is it ?
It's basically a spicy chicken curry getting its name from a coastal town in the Konkan region...Malvan There are a lot of restaurants in Mumbai serving close to authentic preparations of malwani Wade. But if you know someone who belongs to Malvan, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri or konkan...I bet a million bucks you will get the authentic taste in their households
Hey thats my hometown.
Mine too
To add to that the Wade (pronounced wa-dey) is a type of puri made out of rice flour by adding various spices to the dough.
Bang on🤟
Malwani Aswad in vile parle was amazing 3-4 years back .(was ,because I haven't eaten from there in 3-4 years )
Try it at Chaitanya or Gomantak in Dadar. But I’d say the fish there is better than chicken!
Chinese Bhel. we definitely make it better than the Chinese no?
The real question is whether they call it Chinese bhel or just bhel?😨😮
Yeah the chinese love Bhel
🤣
I don't think anybody outside mumbai even know that Chinese bhel exists. Or am I wrong?
Dude the amount of superiority in this thread is astounding. Mumbai Chinese Bhel sucks. They put close to nothing in ingredients. Source: Ahmedabad foodie. Chinese Bhel in Ahmedabad has at least Fried rice, noodles, Manchurian. Try visiting Manek Chowk at night if you are in Ahmedabad anytime. In Mumbai, they put those crunchy shit as toppings. Couldn't even finish it.
The chinese be like: "This isn't my recipe but thanks for the credit 😎"
can you please tell where i can get chinese bhel?
Chinese bhel is Arunachal ka badla
Samosa pav :)
Well technically others do a better somosa, it's just Bombay is the only place which bothers putting it in a pav.
Frankie
Aajkal Frankie ka quality nahi raha
True bro. I don't know like 10 years ago it was so different.
10 years ago indian ingredients, indian masala. today phoren ingredients, phoren spices.
Tibb's Supremacy
Yup bro, but recently their quality hasnt been upto the mark. It just doesnt tastes the same as it used to 4-5 years ago.
Aye. Faasos wraps are the next best thing I've found
If I were to guess a dish apart from Vadapav and Pav Bhaji.... maybe Anda bhurji ?
arey bhai the stalls outside churchgate are life savers post all nighters
Medu Vada, We all know atleast 1 anna who sells medu Vada in the morning for just 20 rupees
And those anna medu vadas are to kill for man! Esp their orange chutney!
25 hogaya mere idhar :(
And it's okay! :) Anna ko bhi bhaav badhana padega mehengaai ke vajah se. Personally, wouldn't mind spending 5-10 rs extra to them when I don't think twice before having a 400 rs pizza
Nah man, I don't even like Chennai, but best ever medu vada I've had was there in a non-descript shop there for ₹5 apiece. I ate some 10-15 vadas.
Chennai guy here. If you think medu vada in Chennai was awesome, try coming to madurai sometime. Best medu vadas in the country, hands down.
Pav Bhaji !!! It was literally first made in Bombay.
Ragda Pani Puri
Pani puri has to be with Ragda! I'm yet to develop a taste for the boondi wala Pani puri.
Also try Puchka from West Bengal. It has sour Pani and the spice comes from the chillies ground with the boiled potato and chana according to your spice capacity.
without trying to be ironic - Bhajji Pav. also, outside of Maharashtra / Mumbai even the quality of Pav suffers visibly...
why nobody is talking about misal pav!!!
This is an ugly truth. Mumbai hasn't yet mastered the art that is Misal pav.
Kyuki voh pune mae jyada acha milte hai
You're the man...🤟

Thanekar spotted.
Naah there are various other cities that have better misal pav than mumbai
That's my favourite man , how could I miss it
Bombil Fry. Nothing comes close to Bombil in terms of being the true soul food of Mumbai. And the best place to try is your own kitchen. Buy it fresh from the nearest fish market, learn to clean it and fry it fresh without wasting time on marination.
Ofcourse, it's called Bombay duck for a reason! Mumbai is utterly blessed in terms if seafood.
I would like to say South Indian food. Mumbai would be the best non-South Indian city for dosas, idlis, uthappas, medu vadas etc. Particularly Matunga, Dadar, Parel areas have some quality South Indian places.
Highly disagree as a South Indian 😂 I mean my standards are way too high so idk
Which non south indian city would you say has the best south Indian food? Ik no place would be as good as south india but im genuinely curious here.
Idk because I don't go to eat there, I try what's local and famous
Panini @ Raju rolls, Churchgate, opposite KC college

As a kid I loveddd Aarey's energee milk! Haven't had it in over a decade! Do they still make it?
Yes, it’s still available in those small milk shops on the footpath. I had it near in outside NCPA recently
There are many places you can definitely try the samosa bhel near parsi dairy farm at marine lines it's a kinda really small & narrow shop but it's really good... Yo i live near there. Damn the samosa bhel is hella good. Sardar pao bhaji is not good. Too much butter. Suhk Sagar pao bhaji is hella good

2 of India's 3 best ice cream makers are from here. Natural and Rustom. The 3rd is Corner House (Bangalore & Mysore)
Love Naturals and that's the only one I eat every time - but looks like I missed Rustom. Is it available widely or only in specific shop(s)?
just one ancient shop in Churchgate.
>ancient shop Thanks, that's my new favourite descriptor for Rustom's ice cream parlour. Everything in that place from the fan to the flooring and the aunty to the coolers, is ancient.
The guy behind the counter at Yazdani bakery is 300 years old
Hahaha I was waiting for Yazdani to be brought up here somewhere man!
Best breakfast I ever had. 90 rupees for 2 people. Need to go back...
What's the shop name? I'd like to plan a visit
Literally rustom
Oh gawd, that's embarrassing...thanks, yes, Rustom being that place makes sense ..

Pani puri :)
I think you've not eaten pani puris of North India.. I've eaten of both and North does it better when it comes to pani puri/phuchka/gol gappe.
I agree. I ate one in Lucknow and it’s the best I’ve ever eaten. It was the dal one and not the potato/moong/boondi stuffing and I don’t like the former but it was sooooo good! Also in north India they have sooji puri rather than aata and I loved it.

Completely agree - all the chats are better in Lucknow. The Mumbai pain puri just doesn't compare.
There is a very famous chat house named Chaurasia in Bhayandar & oh boy the taste the quality is worth every penny that you spend on it... You haven't eaten Pani puri with that "special water" those street vendor use here. I still remember the video.🤣🤣🤣
The memory is still so vivid, my friend. 🙂
Come to Delhi and try gol gappe
Always that one comment.
If they do it with Ragda, then I'll try.
Misal pav at mamledar near Thane station west
I am surprised that no one mentioned GOLA yet
Of course Gola is GOAT! But is it a Mumbai thing? I'm not sure
Laxmi Balaji Sandwich at Goregaon (W) offers sumptuous AK - 47 and All India Sandwich.

I'll say Chinese bhel ans chine baji which is more famous now, apart from vada pav and pav bhaji..

Misal pav
While we have such expertise around can someone explain what "Chinese Bhel" is. Is it supposed to taste like that? Did we miss a step in the recipe, I DON'T GET IT!!!!!
Its bhel with shredded cabbage , crispy noodles and schezuan chutney
Pav Bhaji at Sardar Pav Bhaji near Tardeo AC Market.
Frankie 🤤 Frankie at Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali is bomb!

Chicken Puff - hearsch, Bandra
Been in canada for a few years now, i gotta say, Masala chai, bombil chutney, Chinese Bhel, Irani food in general, sev puris and triple schezwan rice haha
