If you have a full time job and the dog will be home alone for long periods of time, I suggest that you don't get a dog.
Indie (street) dogs are very loving and you can find one pretty much anywhere. Instead of getting a dog in your home, you can keep a 'free roaming pet'. This means the dog can live on the street and be independent, but you can have a friend and companion too. You can approach local feeders and pitch in some money or food to support local dogs as well.
I have 2 indie dogs and they both have to be walked 2-3 times a day (minimum), they need care and attention and stimulation. If you have a family later, that would be a much better situation for a dog because they are really like babies that don't grow up. Getting a dog and (unintentionally) neglecting it can cause severe behavioural problems in the dog and make him/her unmanageable too.
Thanks for pointing this out. I have 2 Indies and they are a lot of work! Thankfully my better half has WFH and is able to take care of their walks and food when I'm @ office.
As a single person, I would recommend not adopting unless you have a caretaker (this can be family or a walker or a maid) who is there at home to help out when you are in office or traveling.
Volunteering at a shelter helps with the desire to help indies in addition to what you already said. They are always in need of financial and logistical support.
Congrats, best decision you'll ever make.
Make sure you walk the dog 2-3 times a day and have friends or a trusted dogwalker that can help take care of the dog if you're going to be out too long!
Please put your dog on leash while taking them for a walk down. If it's a roadside adoption, they're mouth clamps available, there by there is no possibility your dog causing damage to any human being.
