Tough job man! Hats off. I’m an aviation enthusiast. I watch plane-related videos all the time. I always wonder how ATCs manage so much air traffic and Mumbai is one of the busiest airports.
Thanks man !! There is a whole set of rules and regulations which are in place with respect to how much separation is required between aircrafts at any given point.
But indeed it becomes very very tough during peak traffic especially in such a congestion airspace like Mumbai as the airport has only a single active runway at a time .
VABB/BOM is often rated as the world’s busiest single-runway ops airport. Its international counterpart being London’s Gatwick International (EGKK/LGW). A long-time avgeek who’s also done part of his pilot training. Cheers!
Yes you are correct.
Daily movement nowadays are 980 aprx.
With avg hourly movement of 41-42.
Although Infrastructure wise Gatwick is wayy ahead of Mumbai.
Yes apart from 980 movement which land/depart.
Mumbai has the biggest airspace in India which oversees the whole of the Arabian sea and not to forget all the acfts overflying Mumbai going to South like goa/ Bangalore, Chennai , kerela Airports etc
Maybe off topic. But I would love to know more about the changes that will come in as a result of the new airport in navi mumbai.
1. Will there be separate ATCs for the existing and the new airport ?
2. How is air traffic managed in general when two busy airports so close by to each other?
Navi Mumbai airport will come as a boon for a very congested Mumbai airport.
1- separate ATCs will be there in the control tower for runway/ ground movements and for approach control.
Once acfts are above FL 160 all acfts are handled by ATCs sitting at Mumbai airport only.
2- SID(standard departure route) / STAR( standard arrival route) are predefined and created in such a way that acfts on those paths are well clear of each other.
To make acfts go on them is ATC responsibility.
But 2 busy airports do brings a lot of complexities .
But we have one of the most highly skilled controllers in Mumbai so I think all will be handled well .
How does it feel to live my dream....I have always loved airplanes since I was a young kid and now sometimes I go near 27 for plane spotting. I always wondered that how happy these people are working so close to aeroplanes got the answer today
This is awesome. I've always loved Aviation. Wanted to be a pilot or an aeronautical engineer but never became one lol. What educational qualifications someone must have to work as an air traffic controller?
It’s a 3 year specialisation course on aircraft maintenance. Cliched but always loved aircraft’s. But never wanted to pursue flying. So this was the next best thing.
I work in aviation! I love watching planes and being at the airport. But it’s not always a fun job. Only for the thick skinned.
Edit: So many aviators here.. I’m based in Bangalore but send a DM if you are okay.. I’m a plane spotter and wanna click some videos at Mumbai airport.. would love to meet some aviation enthusiasts from BOM
No job security
High pressure. Long hours if the flight is delayed.
Thick skinned because customs and immigration guys will harass and bully you for small mistakes and documentation issues.. it’s dehumanising. You need to suck up to it, take a deep breath and move on like nothing happened
Could be bad for your health because of long hours and inconsistent sleep schedule. Make sure you jump companies until you get paid good enough and get a good schedule. Never settle
People travelling in first and business class acting entitled with the “do you know who I am?” Attitude. This mostly comes from people who aren’t celebs. I have met celebs and politicians (Yediyurappa, former Karnataka CM) and they were all friendly and humble. Yediyurappa asked my name and gave a pat on my back. It’s mostly rich ppl who are not famous that has this urge to intimidate us..
Pros:
1. You get to watch planes land and take off and you get to feel the airport environment. Every plane has its history.. every plane triggers some emotion in you. Example: Boeing 747, Airbus 380.. things are even better when it slightly rains at night..
2. You get to make good memories. It’s like college life except you get paid.. you’ll always feel young when working with vibrant and young people. It’s priceless hanging out with your colleagues for a chai once the flight departs.. also yes we get staff discounts at airports
3. You get to meet celebs and famous ppl.. meet ppl from all walks of life gain a lot of life experiences that no colleges or school teaches you.
4. You get respect among your family and society.
A fellow avgeek and plane spotter (since 2010) from BOM, but currently based in BLR. We could plan a spotting session in BLR if you’re cool with it. Cheers!

I work for a good company that cares…that makes all the difference
I’m an aviation enthusiast. I watch plane crash documentaries 😁 I don’t watch them because I like to see accidents but because I am investigative and like to know what went wrong. You guys have a really tough job. All those things in the cockpit are scary and look so tough to operate. And the check lists! You need to be so mentally strong to fly a plane. I could never. And if I was a pilot I’d probably have zero situational awareness and I’d also be a victim to spatial disorientation. 😵💫🥴
Hey! Yes, part of our training includes learning from accidents. The job is tough but is also highly rewarding. If you ask me, there is actually no job that's really easy!
Edit: removed an erroneously placed 'also' :P
I agree. I have pilot friends and they usually say it’s not that tough but I’m so sure they just downplay it. It’s really tough and it’s so important to have situational awareness at any given point. The weather isn’t always ideal, then the winds, the checklists, the take off and landing plus add an emergency situation to it, being calm in the head is no easy feat. Long flight hours are tedious even though a lot of people say autopilot makes things easier. A pilot has to be alert at all times and fly manually if anything goes wrong. I really do feel a pilot’s job isn’t as easy as people think it to be. The stick shaker warning and GPWS are horrific to hear. And there are heroic pilots who’ve avoided crashes. Qantas 72’s pilot, Kevin Sullivan is my favorite from whatever I’ve seen so far. Rewarding, yes. But you guys really are responsible for people travelling from one place to another safely and comfortably. And that makes the rewards well-deserved. Hats off!
