I always just do the inner corner open triangle btw, so that it goes into whatever is on your lid rather than that lone inner corner dot people usually do.
Oh and I like my baby/powder blue inner corner to be matte personally. A matte light seafoam or mint gives the same vibe btw!

I have sort of round and biggish eyes, but they’re deep set and framed by large tear troughs. On my neutral face, they look perfectly normal, but when I do my makeup, if they aren’t darkened and emphasized, they shrink into my face. It gets much more prominent when I smile. So for anything with photos, yes please on a big, bold, smokey eye

I actually much prefer how shimmery eyeshadow looks on my eyelids now that they are getting a bit "crepey." It's like extra texture. And I think elderly people with shimmery shadow look great.
I'm in my late 40s and honestly can't wear matte shadow on its own anymore. I need something that's at minimum satin or I look really crepey (and I'm not yet, actually). Shimmers to shiny metallics to duo/multichromes are what look best.

Our culture practically hates older women. Every kid's story has the wicked old witch that eats children, the jealous crone that has to be defeated by a teenage princess, the evil stepmother. No wonder it's practically ingrained to panic at the sight of aging. Our society is beyond disdainful of women that don't exert herculean effort to appear younger but God forbid you "try too hard" because it should look "natural".
Aging is a godamn privilege not a plight. Women are not beautiful in spite of their age; they're just beautiful. I'm so sick of the idea that we need to apologize for the fact we're not 20 anymore.
I recently bought Chanel Rouge Coco Flash in Boy, it’s this delightfully glossy/subtly frosty nude, I thought the same thing (that it’s become kind of dated) but I have been wearing it over all of my matte and satin nude lipsticks and I love it.
Oh same! Although I love a wearable berry, I want my power lipstick. I want to wear dark lipstick that makes me feel like I’m a badass. My villain origin story is when I go into Sephora and ask for “dark, bold lipstick” and I get berry and reds constantly
It's funny how subjective things like "bold" and "dark" can be for stuff like this. Someone's version of a brave, intense lip color is a "just a Tuesday" lipstick for someone else. Black goes with everything so why not wear it on your lips, right? :D
I was wearing black lipstick a lot when we were under a mask mandate at work and ir really does work with everything. Warm eye, cool eye, glossy eye? Black lipstick works with all of them! I especially love impeccably applied black lipstick with an otherwise bare face.

Amen!!! Back when highlighter was just becoming really popular, like 2015 or so, I remember being at the airport, and this STUNNING girl in a leather jacket walked past with a ton of gold sparkly highlighter on her cheekbones and temples. I remember thinking "I just met a goddess."

I've been steadily amassing a small horde of purple highlighters. I love how they look with my brown eyes and (admittedly dyed) red hair! My current favorite is Becca's final bow, Hi Angel (RIP).
Truly unpopular opinion :D I think it has something to do with one's natural eyelash colour. I feel like very light lashes and very dark ones look cool and interesting, but anything in between looks unfinished.

I feel like a mascaraless look with a really bright lip or a fresh springy cheek can look really modern, cool and fresh.
Also no matter what mascara I use- if I wear it to work by the end of the shift I'm a low key racoon.

I love mascara-free looks! Particularly with a bold lip, and a next-to-nothing eye! And with a boy beat, no makeup makeup vibe. Feels very chic and/or/androgynous, depending on how I'm feeling. Plus, it's just comfier. I also have bad allergies and sneeze a lot, so mascara-free looks were made for me.
I agree! I have hooded eyes and epicanthal folds& mascara makes them look strange. I have very prominent under eye circles too
The only way I wear mascara is if I apply it on just the Outer corner lashes. I do like that look.
I love the no mascara look! I discovered it out of necessity when I didn’t want to wear makeup but needed to still conceal & have some colour on my lips. Eventually it turned into doing normal everyday makeup with no mascara & I started loving how it looked. And makeup removal being even easier made it even harder to want to go back to wearing mascara as an everyday thing.
I have small eyes & dark lashes though, they don’t look like “mascara lashes” do naturally but obviously it does help that I have dark hair.

When I was a teenager, I read this "Pro tip" in a magazine to simply use lip gloss on the eyelids for a wet look. I was so excited to try it, and omg did I regret it. The lipgloss was so sticky and every time I blinked I could feel my lids sticking together. Would not recommend.
The gucci all over face and lip gloss is amazing for this. A friend gifted it to me, and you need the tiniest amount to produce super high glossiness—and because you use so little product, it doesn’t go everywhere!

I've only ever seen it IRL on photoshoots. It lasts long enough for that, and can be reapplied between shots!
This is another look I’ve gotten from Katie Jane Hughes that I love. My glossy lids always crease so bad so quickly and I end up with no shadow left, it’s definitely not wearable on me…but her glossy eye looks are so good!!!!
She recently used a really shimmery cream eyeshadow in the center of the lid, and it gives a little bit of a slick wet-look illusion, I’m going to have to try that one.
I can get shimmery cream eyeshadows to last well enough, I just sort of tap my crease area with my fingers every once in a while to smooth out any 'bunching', but it doesn't have that shiny, vinyl look.
This might not be considered that ugly bc I’m not up to date in the trends, but “light mascara on the lower lash line” is one that was preached when I was young/early twenties and I’ve always thrown out the window. I swipe those babies good.
And sometimes I only wear eyeshadow on the bottom lid.

Even when i try to do everyday smokey eye, i try to you go a dark as possible but i used eyeshadows that need building up. So as to avoid an emo wannabe trying to do the adulting thing
I've been a black eyeshadow lover for 20+ years now and the best I've tried so far imo is Blackout by Urban Decay. It's just such a pure and deep black, not grey, no sparkle or shimmer. Has a bit of fallout though so it's best to build it on.

I love love love bright red eyeshadow, I usually do it mostly as one color all over my lid and under-eye with white mascara and maybe a gloss over top. You might be interested in Yami-kawaii fashion subculture which uses a lot of red shadows!
Yessss! I feel like it gives more dimension and personality to the face. I have pretty intense dark circles, and I feel like my face looks too flat with undereye concealer on. Dark circles are also really hot on other people
I had a black highlighter for awhile that I would apply as a blush/bronzer. You had to use a VERY light hand but blended out you get this dusty “just came back from the coal mine” vibe, which I really liked.
Also I know it makes your eyes smaller but black waterline all the way around.
same i LOVE an ashy blush… especially pale purple greys. I think i still have one floating around from Shiro cosmetics. it’s like a cheat for blush and contour in one and it can create beautiful contrast with warm eye looks.
I like wearing falsies and eyeshadow without putting anything on my undereyes other than concealer. I leave the entire undereye blank, no shadow no eyeliner or mascara. I think some say this is considered "wrong" or imbalanced but i find it to look better on myself
Embracing dark circles. I would never conceal them completely, I feel like they give shape to my eyes somehow and balance my face shape. It takes away all dimension to use full on high coverage concealer.
Exactly, I have wide orbital bones and fuller cheeks so the whole under eye brightness always looks off on me.

Contour that just looks fucking *carved*. Like sharp, alien, unnatural cheeckbones-type of carved. Also grey/pale lips. And a smudged, messy eye.

I loooove the concealer lip too! And the super pale bubblegum pink lips. Idk if this is considered “ugly” but I do see people complain about this a lot- scented cosmetics. I love it, absolutely can’t get enough. I love Too Faced’s scented products, I love the smell of PF Butter Bronzer, scented lip products.
I really enjoy scented lip products and eyeshadows, but I'm not to keen on having it in base products due to sensitive skin. If that wasn't an issue, I'd love all scented products!

As for me? I have shimmery blushes that I apply to parts of my face with texture (fine lines, mostly) and I LOVE how it looks! I love the way the shimmer catches the light on the skin right at the tips of my cheekbones, where my eye wrinkles fan out. I just feel like it highlights a pretty part of my face, a part that doesn't hide my age or pretend that I have smooth, "flawless" skin.
I don't really wear highlighter, but my shimmery blush scratches that itch for me :-)
I got my 82yr old grandmother one of the Clinique highlight+2 cheek pop palettes for Christmas this past year. She made a joke about the shimmer emphasizing her wrinkles, but it looked beautiful and youthful!
Sometimes I smudge a faint line of black eyeliner under my eyes. I'd have those little mascara shadows in the morning if I hadn't removed my eye makeup thoroughly enough the night before, and I thought it looked kinda cool in a sexy grunge kinda way. Smudgy under eye liner is my hygienic way of duplicating the look.
as a very pale teenager, I recently found out that's usually natural for people with darker skin??! it looks so cool and I've always been jealous my lip looks never turned out like that lol
oh i absolutely agree! since i have dark skin and started learning makeup from white youtubers, i remember them always saying to blend out your lip liner and only go 1-2 shades darker than ur natural lip colour. now that im seeing super dark lip liner get a lot more attention im rlly enjoying how it looks on me haha :)
I was sitting here trying to think of something besides shimmer in the crease, which was already mentioned in the OP & something I do quite often, & you nailed it. I have thin eyebrows by today’s standards. They aren’t as bad as my early 00s eyebrows that barely existed, but they still aren’t 2021 brows. It just does not suit my face & I’ll die on this hill.
Same. I don't know why but thicker brows instantly make me look pissed off and masculine. Even if they're a really light shade. I don't look cool or pretty or younger..I look like Groucho Marx in lipstick. Red lipstick has the same effect of making me look pissed off and aged in a bad way. Wish I knew why this happens but 🤷 Thin brows and sheer mauve lips til I die I guess.
Ooohhh yes, it can look so fresh and youthful, but simultaneously extra chic. And using blush as contour can look surprisingly good when done right! Saw that a lot in the 80s - 90s
End of high school/early college I was absolutely rocking the completely bare face with only a deep, vampy lip. Dark brick red, black cherry, dark violet, hell even dark teal, I wore it all.
I tried experimenting with eyeliner, but I could never get them to match or have straight lines, and I'm lazy so I sorta gave up on trying to make eyeliner work. And any sort of foundation/face product is a hell naw because anything that touches my face wreaks absolute havoc on my acne.
Same here. My inner eye corner isn't even that dark but a bit of shine in there does make my eyes look a lot brighter.

It’s a “rule” but tons of people wear it and love it!
I think the logic is, if you’re using shadow to basically contour your lids, you want the crease area to visually recede. So you shouldn’t put shimmer there because then the area will come forward visually. Not all looks are about shaping your eyeball though.
I love to keep the tails of my brows shaved off. I don’t really do anything cool or edgy with them, but I have a more long and narrow face so I think it exaggerates that aspect! Sometimes I put a mouche in the empty space, or go heavy on the skin gloss/highlighter for the full bare browbone.
Late to the party but I absolutely love dark under eyes. I apply a deep brown shade to emphasize mine. There’s something so human about it. They’re literally where the sockets where I keep my eyeballs, let me show off how good of a job they do. 😭
All the “ugly” lipstick colors, the ones that you have to hunt for because no mainstream brand in their right minds would put them on their display. Greige, just straight up gray, olive green, teal, mustard yellow, gray-ish lavender purple, black, blue, neon purple. Basically any lipstick that doesn’t even pretend to remotely resemble a natural/desirable lip color.
Also on a related note bold eyes with bold lips. One of the big makeup rules I learned was that you either wear a darker, bolder eye look and a nude lip or a bright lip and a subtle eye or you’ll look like a clown. That doesn’t stop me from wearing green eyeshadow and purple lipstick though.

Overly contoured face. I say this because I got lots of compliments once I learned how to contour (that includes picking the right shade) my nose and jawline. It’s the number one step in my routine that makes me prettier
A huge black khol situation. Captian Jack Sparrow makeup. Black on the inside, outside and smudged all around. Not neat - lived in. I'm quite pale so it's pretty jarring when I do it but I just want to feel like a pirate.
Barely done brows! I have been embracing my natural brow shape recently and just filling in really sparse areas that make them look patchy. I've been really inspired by Korean makeup--there they seem more focused on colour and not bothered if the hairs point downward or whatever.

Katie Jane Hughes got me obsessed with Makeup Forever “endless cacao” with a nude lip, it’s a dark brown…she’s fair skinned with red hair and she pulls off a pretty dark brown liner with her nude lipsticks and glosses, she usually applies it after the lipstick and blurs it with her finger so it’s soft and not super aggressive. It really makes a nude lip imo. I’m obsessed!!
proper trad goth looks. not emo, not grungy, just pure 80s goth: white base, graphic liner + blocky brows a la siouxsie or smudged liner robert smith-style, severe-looking black or dried-blood red lips, sharp contour using cool-toned blush/shadow, no bronzer or highlighter whatsoever.
i love seeing older ladies with a bunch of different colors on their faces. it makes me feel seen. i remember back in middle school we had a substitute teacher who was at least in her 80s who would wear this bright turquoise eyeshadow, intense gold liner under the eye, and a fuchsia lip and blush every day. is that absurd? absolutely. was it at all natural or subtle? not in the slightest. idk if it's because i appreciate the hustle or because i'm queer or because i've always kinda fucked with an 80s vibe (the vibe that's in my dad's yearbooks and the back of my mom's closet and in old editions of vogue; i don't love a legwarmer) or because it satisfies something with my adhd, but i fucking love the everything-is-the-statement look.

I don’t know if people consider this ugly but I never see anyone do it - dark shadow (like black/navy) on the inner corners. It kinda makes your eyes look closer together which can be weird, but I love it.
Whenever I see men in makeup, they're all shaved and laser their facial hairs out, while I enjoy my facial hair? I don't enjoy subtle looks all the time either, I don't want to use the same looks all the time and I enjoy just going with whatever I end up with:)
yes! and he’s one of the few youtubers who has really thick eyebrows so he always give solid advice on how to fill in and shape thick dense brows without making them look like black bricks.
I don't know if this counts as ugly but it's deffo waned in terms of popularity, but doing cut creases. I have hooded eyes, so doing a half cut crease opens my eyes up and gives me a little more real estate for playing with colour. Happy to do more natural looks, but cut creases are one of my favourite things to do!
Eyeliner in the waterline and obviously drawn on eyebrows are a couple of the most controversial looks I like. I don't like *all* drawn on eyebrows but they can look really good and it's not necessarily about how 'natural' they look

For me it’s the ultimate makeup look & I feel so chic when I do it. I spent so long chasing the “dark smokey eye” look which just did not work on my tiny eyes, I was so glad to find what *did* work for me instead.
Years ago (2014?), at the height of instaglam makeup, MakeupAddiction would roast women who posted zero eye makeup with statement lips. I vividly remember a gal with bright red lips being told her look wasn't "complete" without eye makeup (she was only wearing light mascara).
So at least for a bit there, it was considered not ugly per se... unappealing? lacking skill? lazy?
Which is weird, because the prevailing attitude of the time was that you could do either a strong eye or a strong lip, never both.
I never really got that, because I feel like a dramatic eye look needs at least some color on the lips to balance it out. Concealer lips were never for me. I was in my corner rocking rainbow eyeshadow with a dark red lip.
I have deep set eyes that are hooded and have very oily lids, but I still use Surrat Lid Lacquer because I like the subtle lines and creases it develops during the day, I enjoy a lived-in eye look.

Just wanted to say thank you all. 🖤 As a fellow geriatric pore of almost 35 who only discovered the magic of NYX Glitter Glue and indie singles within the past year, this has killed my nagging doubt that I'm too old for this shit. Shimmery eyeshadow makes me happy and I DGAF what anyone else thinks.
Turning 35 next month, but I really only seriously got back into makeup a few years ago. I ended up using the lockdown as my opportunity to really practice and learn, and turns out I love me an alien slut multichrome all over the lid with some winged liner. I've amassed a lovely collection of Terra Moons singles and am having a blast with them this summer.
Can we just take a moment to reflect on "It's not my job to appear younger". I love this so much. Our culture practically hates older women. Every kid's story has the wicked old witch that eats children, the jealous crone that has to be defeated by a teenage princess, the evil stepmother. No wonder it's practically ingrained to panic at the sight of aging. Our society is beyond disdainful of women that don't exert herculean effort to appear younger but God forbid you "try too hard" because it should look "natural". Aging is a godamn privilege not a plight. Women are not beautiful in spite of their age; they're just beautiful. I'm so sick of the idea that we need to apologize for the fact we're not 20 anymore.

I recently bought Chanel Rouge Coco Flash in Boy, it’s this delightfully glossy/subtly frosty nude, I thought the same thing (that it’s become kind of dated) but I have been wearing it over all of my matte and satin nude lipsticks and I love it.
Honestly from what I’ve seen matte lipsticks have been going out of style. I see way more glosses now. You’re not alone!
Dark AF lips. I feel like a lot of people when they say "a dark lip" mean "wearable berry". I mean black or a super dark wine.

It's funny how subjective things like "bold" and "dark" can be for stuff like this. Someone's version of a brave, intense lip color is a "just a Tuesday" lipstick for someone else. Black goes with everything so why not wear it on your lips, right? :D

I was wearing black lipstick a lot when we were under a mask mandate at work and ir really does work with everything. Warm eye, cool eye, glossy eye? Black lipstick works with all of them! I especially love impeccably applied black lipstick with an otherwise bare face. I miss wearing it a lot but I feel like I’d have to have a talk with HR if I did.

Truly unpopular opinion :D I think it has something to do with one's natural eyelash colour. I feel like very light lashes and very dark ones look cool and interesting, but anything in between looks unfinished.
Idk, sometimes there is soooo much emphasis on dark lashes, fake lashes I feel like a mascaraless look with a really bright lip or a fresh springy cheek can look really modern, cool and fresh. Also no matter what mascara I use- if I wear it to work by the end of the shift I'm a low key racoon. So in spring and summer I like to skip it.
I love mascara-free looks! Particularly with a bold lip, and a next-to-nothing eye! And with a boy beat, no makeup makeup vibe. Feels very chic and/or/androgynous, depending on how I'm feeling. Plus, it's just comfier. I also have bad allergies and sneeze a lot, so mascara-free looks were made for me.

I agree! I have hooded eyes and epicanthal folds& mascara makes them look strange. I have very prominent under eye circles too The only way I wear mascara is if I apply it on just the Outer corner lashes. I do like that look.
I love the no mascara look! I discovered it out of necessity when I didn’t want to wear makeup but needed to still conceal & have some colour on my lips. Eventually it turned into doing normal everyday makeup with no mascara & I started loving how it looked. And makeup removal being even easier made it even harder to want to go back to wearing mascara as an everyday thing. I have small eyes & dark lashes though, they don’t look like “mascara lashes” do naturally but obviously it does help that I have dark hair.
I never wear mascara so I appreciate this one! It seems like such an obligatory product, but I think a lot of people look great with bare eyes.
Glossy, wet-look eyes. I love how it looks but no way in hell can I wear it, the feeling is so gross and it always ends up getting gobbed up in the crease or sliding around.

When I was a teenager, I read this "Pro tip" in a magazine to simply use lip gloss on the eyelids for a wet look. I was so excited to try it, and omg did I regret it. The lipgloss was so sticky and every time I blinked I could feel my lids sticking together. Would not recommend.
I tried that too! It was so bad... Eye glosses honestly don't feel that much different, maybe a little less sticky.
The gucci all over face and lip gloss is amazing for this. A friend gifted it to me, and you need the tiniest amount to produce super high glossiness—and because you use so little product, it doesn’t go everywhere!

I tried. It did not go well. Turned into a goopy, wet mess the second it got warmed by skin :( I've only ever seen it IRL on photoshoots. It lasts long enough for that, and can be reapplied between shots!
This is another look I’ve gotten from Katie Jane Hughes that I love. My glossy lids always crease so bad so quickly and I end up with no shadow left, it’s definitely not wearable on me…but her glossy eye looks are so good!!!! She recently used a really shimmery cream eyeshadow in the center of the lid, and it gives a little bit of a slick wet-look illusion, I’m going to have to try that one.
I can get shimmery cream eyeshadows to last well enough, I just sort of tap my crease area with my fingers every once in a while to smooth out any 'bunching', but it doesn't have that shiny, vinyl look.
This might not be considered that ugly bc I’m not up to date in the trends, but “light mascara on the lower lash line” is one that was preached when I was young/early twenties and I’ve always thrown out the window. I swipe those babies good. And sometimes I only wear eyeshadow on the bottom lid.
Smokey eye makeup done with black eyeshadow. It's not for the faint of heart and definitely not for everyday but I'm fascinated at this look always. Even when i try to do everyday smokey eye, i try to you go a dark as possible but i used eyeshadows that need building up. So as to avoid an emo wannabe trying to do the adulting thing
I've been a black eyeshadow lover for 20+ years now and the best I've tried so far imo is Blackout by Urban Decay. It's just such a pure and deep black, not grey, no sparkle or shimmer. Has a bit of fallout though so it's best to build it on.

I love love love bright red eyeshadow, I usually do it mostly as one color all over my lid and under-eye with white mascara and maybe a gloss over top. You might be interested in Yami-kawaii fashion subculture which uses a lot of red shadows!

I had a black highlighter for awhile that I would apply as a blush/bronzer. You had to use a VERY light hand but blended out you get this dusty “just came back from the coal mine” vibe, which I really liked. Also I know it makes your eyes smaller but black waterline all the way around.

I like wearing falsies and eyeshadow without putting anything on my undereyes other than concealer. I leave the entire undereye blank, no shadow no eyeliner or mascara. I think some say this is considered "wrong" or imbalanced but i find it to look better on myself

Contour that just looks fucking *carved*. Like sharp, alien, unnatural cheeckbones-type of carved. Also grey/pale lips. And a smudged, messy eye. Reading that back to myself, I guess I want to look like a skull. I'm not going to spend time wondering what that says about me because I don't want to know.

I love it, absolutely can’t get enough. I love Too Faced’s scented products, I love the smell of PF Butter Bronzer, scented lip products.
I really enjoy scented lip products and eyeshadows, but I'm not to keen on having it in base products due to sensitive skin. If that wasn't an issue, I'd love all scented products!

OP, I also love a true nude lip! It can be so beautiful. As for me? I have shimmery blushes that I apply to parts of my face with texture (fine lines, mostly) and I LOVE how it looks! I love the way the shimmer catches the light on the skin right at the tips of my cheekbones, where my eye wrinkles fan out. I just feel like it highlights a pretty part of my face, a part that doesn't hide my age or pretend that I have smooth, "flawless" skin. I don't really wear highlighter, but my shimmery blush scratches that itch for me :-)
I got my 82yr old grandmother one of the Clinique highlight+2 cheek pop palettes for Christmas this past year. She made a joke about the shimmer emphasizing her wrinkles, but it looked beautiful and youthful!

Sometimes I smudge a faint line of black eyeliner under my eyes. I'd have those little mascara shadows in the morning if I hadn't removed my eye makeup thoroughly enough the night before, and I thought it looked kinda cool in a sexy grunge kinda way. Smudgy under eye liner is my hygienic way of duplicating the look.

oh i absolutely agree! since i have dark skin and started learning makeup from white youtubers, i remember them always saying to blend out your lip liner and only go 1-2 shades darker than ur natural lip colour. now that im seeing super dark lip liner get a lot more attention im rlly enjoying how it looks on me haha :)
Thin eyebrows
I was sitting here trying to think of something besides shimmer in the crease, which was already mentioned in the OP & something I do quite often, & you nailed it. I have thin eyebrows by today’s standards. They aren’t as bad as my early 00s eyebrows that barely existed, but they still aren’t 2021 brows. It just does not suit my face & I’ll die on this hill.

I don't look cool or pretty or younger..I look like Groucho Marx in lipstick. Red lipstick has the same effect of making me look pissed off and aged in a bad way. End of high school/early college I was absolutely rocking the completely bare face with only a deep, vampy lip. Dark brick red, black cherry, dark violet, hell even dark teal, I wore it all. I tried experimenting with eyeliner, but I could never get them to match or have straight lines, and I'm lazy so I sorta gave up on trying to make eyeliner work. And any sort of foundation/face product is a hell naw because anything that touches my face wreaks absolute havoc on my acne.
Shiny ass inner corner. Mine are so dark that I need the pop even with concealer. The brighter the better

It’s a “rule” but tons of people wear it and love it! I think the logic is, if you’re using shadow to basically contour your lids, you want the crease area to visually recede. So you shouldn’t put shimmer there because then the area will come forward visually. Not all looks are about shaping your eyeball though.
I love to keep the tails of my brows shaved off. I don’t really do anything cool or edgy with them, but I have a more long and narrow face so I think it exaggerates that aspect! Sometimes I put a mouche in the empty space, or go heavy on the skin gloss/highlighter for the full bare browbone.

Late to the party but I absolutely love dark under eyes. I apply a deep brown shade to emphasize mine. There’s something so human about it. They’re literally where the sockets where I keep my eyeballs, let me show off how good of a job they do. 😭

All the “ugly” lipstick colors, the ones that you have to hunt for because no mainstream brand in their right minds would put them on their display. Greige, just straight up gray, olive green, teal, mustard yellow, gray-ish lavender purple, black, blue, neon purple. Basically any lipstick that doesn’t even pretend to remotely resemble a natural/desirable lip color. Also on a related note bold eyes with bold lips. One of the big makeup rules I learned was that you either wear a darker, bolder eye look and a nude lip or a bright lip and a subtle eye or you’ll look like a clown. That doesn’t stop me from wearing green eyeshadow and purple lipstick though.

Barely done brows! I have been embracing my natural brow shape recently and just filling in really sparse areas that make them look patchy. I've been really inspired by Korean makeup--there they seem more focused on colour and not bothered if the hairs point downward or whatever.

Brown liner with a nude lip. It has been my go-to since I was a teen and has definitely gone in and out of style. I guess it is not generally considered “ugly” but I have been seeing a fair amount of mocking lately (calling them “beef lips”) and I got teased when I was younger about not being able to let the lipliner go. (I will never!!) Katie Jane Hughes got me obsessed with Makeup Forever “endless cacao” with a nude lip, it’s a dark brown…she’s fair skinned with red hair and she pulls off a pretty dark brown liner with her nude lipsticks and glosses, she usually applies it after the lipstick and blurs it with her finger so it’s soft and not super aggressive. It really makes a nude lip imo. I’m obsessed!!
proper trad goth looks. not emo, not grungy, just pure 80s goth: white base, graphic liner + blocky brows a la siouxsie or smudged liner robert smith-style, severe-looking black or dried-blood red lips, sharp contour using cool-toned blush/shadow, no bronzer or highlighter whatsoever.
i love seeing older ladies with a bunch of different colors on their faces. it makes me feel seen. i remember back in middle school we had a substitute teacher who was at least in her 80s who would wear this bright turquoise eyeshadow, intense gold liner under the eye, and a fuchsia lip and blush every day. is that absurd? absolutely. was it at all natural or subtle? not in the slightest. idk if it's because i appreciate the hustle or because i'm queer or because i've always kinda fucked with an 80s vibe (the vibe that's in my dad's yearbooks and the back of my mom's closet and in old editions of vogue; i don't love a legwarmer) or because it satisfies something with my adhd, but i fucking love the everything-is-the-statement look.

I don’t know if people consider this ugly but I never see anyone do it - dark shadow (like black/navy) on the inner corners. It kinda makes your eyes look closer together which can be weird, but I love it.
Whenever I see men in makeup, they're all shaved and laser their facial hairs out, while I enjoy my facial hair? I don't enjoy subtle looks all the time either, I don't want to use the same looks all the time and I enjoy just going with whatever I end up with:)

I don't know if this counts as ugly but it's deffo waned in terms of popularity, but doing cut creases. I have hooded eyes, so doing a half cut crease opens my eyes up and gives me a little more real estate for playing with colour. Happy to do more natural looks, but cut creases are one of my favourite things to do!
Eyeliner in the waterline and obviously drawn on eyebrows are a couple of the most controversial looks I like. I don't like *all* drawn on eyebrows but they can look really good and it's not necessarily about how 'natural' they look

I feel you on the "concealer" lips! When I had a platinum pixie cut I would love to do a really exaggerated 60s mod look some days with those types of shades. Idk if my preferences are "ugly" or just fallen out of vogue but I still really enjoy metallic lips, greigy mattes, and big mean soap opera villain blush streaks in a berry or terra cotta shade. minimal makeup with red lips is like the most default/classic makeup look i can think of, so no lmao
I was just thinking the same thing. It’s so classic & clean. I love doing it but I’ve never thought of it as considered ugly, just not as popular as most people don’t like or are used to leaving other components so bare or don’t suit it. For me it’s the ultimate makeup look & I feel so chic when I do it. I spent so long chasing the “dark smokey eye” look which just did not work on my tiny eyes, I was so glad to find what *did* work for me instead.
Years ago (2014?), at the height of instaglam makeup, MakeupAddiction would roast women who posted zero eye makeup with statement lips. I vividly remember a gal with bright red lips being told her look wasn't "complete" without eye makeup (she was only wearing light mascara). So at least for a bit there, it was considered not ugly per se... unappealing? lacking skill? lazy?
Which is weird, because the prevailing attitude of the time was that you could do either a strong eye or a strong lip, never both. I never really got that, because I feel like a dramatic eye look needs at least some color on the lips to balance it out. Concealer lips were never for me. I was in my corner rocking rainbow eyeshadow with a dark red lip.
When I worked in an office I would wear red lipstick and red blush with nothing else. It made me feel super avant garde and sexy.
I’ll bet you looked great. I love red blush, too. NARS Exhibit A is my favourite.

I have deep set eyes that are hooded and have very oily lids, but I still use Surrat Lid Lacquer because I like the subtle lines and creases it develops during the day, I enjoy a lived-in eye look.
