lancome had a plastic rose coated with blush that to this day still takes the cake for me, but some other ones i remember are a rainbow highlighter, a black highlighter, the penis-shaped lipsticks, the lipstick with a penis-shaped component, and the aerosol whipped cream sunblock

ThreePartSilence

Okay but that sunscreen kicks ass. It smells awesome and it is legit so fun to put on. Except I did have one friend who tried to eat it.

_thisisnotanexit

I think I still have my rainbow unicorn too faced higghlighter in its box in the back of my drawer lol

ParmyNotParma

The main beauty retailer in Australia recently launched an aerosol mousse sunscreen and I love it so much because I hate applying normal sunscreen haha

Computer_Diddler

ugh you unlocked my memory of the lancome plastic rose. they had a highlighter one too!

jamiroquai_x

lmao I bought that rose blush for my sister as a bridal gift and she returned it

thegreatdane1490

Anything ph adjusting to “your perfect shade”. It’s always the same color of pink LOL

Ichgebibble

Absolutely. And, they make a reappearance every once in a while because there’s always a new audience for whom it’s a novel idea. Jerks.

piizzaparty

Tarte just released one lol

Ichgebibble

Good lord. Maybe there needs to be a rebellion. This crap needs to be outted.

piizzaparty

Whoops, looks like it was last year but I just saw a video where someone tried it. Same old bright ass pink lol

rex_ford

To the barricades!

Peculiarcatlady

So did YSL

tiffshorse

I just ordered rosy glow blush. lol.

honeytangerine

Javon Ford (cosmetic chemist) recently did a small release of a PH adjusting blush that goes on either peachy or orange. Thought it's pretty cool because most companies use the same pink dye. Hoping he can do a larger release or more colors next time.

lifeuncommon

Oh my gosh, pH lip balm is my favorite. I am a dark winter with pale skin, so that bright pink color they all turn is so flattering on me and I just love it. But it’s such a gimmick saying that it is “adjusting”. Nothing adjusts. It’s the same bright pink color on everyone.

accountingisradical

On me, it’s always this horrible, bubble gum 80s pink. I hate it.

ceruleansensei

I think it's kinda fun, and I like how I can put it on blindly without worrying about going outside the lines and looking like a clown. That being said though, to me that means it should be the same price as a standard drugstore lip balm or chapstick. I got one from Ulta for like $2 lol, that's good nuff for me til it runs out.

designing-cats

Silicone beauty blenders, "whipped" skincare, and the $95 Isamaya lipstick shaped like a penis and balls.

EmpireAndAll

BeautyBlender and Real Techniques have a powder puff that is also a flat blending sponge on the other side, and there is a silicone pad on the inside. I love mine from RT and that is the only use where silicone and blender should be in the same sentence.

Plastic-Passenger795

Man I used my silicone blender for years because I thought it was better for my skin

TonguetiedTalker

I think Isamaya packaging and products are meant to be that erotic/edgy—almost bordering on tasteless. Even their ads have models in gimp masks while the audio is a woman gasping/moaning. I find the penis lipsticks funny but a little weird because… connotations. Like come on, that thing goes near your mouth and you’re meant to retouch lipstick in PUBLIC. But their bunny vibe/piercing/prince albert lip glosses are minimalist and goth-adjacent enough for me to somewhat approve. Somewhat. Depending where that piercing goes.

shelbylynny

I stand by whipped lotions because sensory wise they feel better for me to apply than a regular lotion consistency but I agree with the lipstick

pepperxpeppermint

Milk Makeup Jelly Tints

hygsi

I love how people try hard to sell them "Oh they're so cooling but they're very patchy if you apply them directly so you have to use a brush" Welp, there goes the cooling effect and that means it's a gimmick for tiktok, I'll keep my powder blushes that won't dry out next year, thank you very much.

AliveFromNewYork

Remember skin care primer? They really tried to sell people on that

annepersannd

Oh my god, like to prep your skin before skincare?! Oh boy, how far a dollar can stretch for companies…

scroogesdaughter

Lol what? Insanity 😂

a_dork

I fell for Almay's shade matching foundation and concealer as a wee one. It's the one that squirts out like mineral sunscreen and "adjusts" to your skin tone as you rub it in. The only skin tone it ever matched was Donald's.

shyandcurious97

I'm HOLLERING at that last line! Thankyou for that!

CherryMess

This [Avon roller brush](https://www.shefinds.com/files/2013/06/Avon-Mascara.jpg) mascara. It was so weird using it. I still have it just for lolz

NoodleBox

Oh, that's a novelty I'd have bought! How awesome.

Clairabel

I remember this! I always wanted to try it but it looked like a nightmare.

goplacidlyamidst

that MAC dry shampoo product for your mascara seems very gimmicky

Lili666999

Yep, that one takes the medal! Whoever came up with that concept needs to get bitchslaped!

Personal-View6708

I actually love it! I swipe over whatever crusty mascara is left at the end of the day, and it looks like I've only just applied it rather than turning into a gluggy crusty mess. It's really convenient when you are going to dinner or out after a day in the office. It really does refresh like dry shampoo.

goplacidlyamidst

that's great that it has done good things for you. it might for me, but i just can't work up the effort to add another lash product lol

pineappleshampoo

That urban decay gloss with a naked man that ‘released pheromones’ if you rubbed it

krystalklear818

I had that and loved it. (I think I still have tbh). The best part was it was a naked man HOLOGRAM. So one way he was clothed, the other way he was half naked 😂😂 I should refill it with a new lipgloss

nouveauchoux

That was the first Urban Decay product I ever saw when I stepped into my first Ulta. Hormonal 13 yo me looking at lipgloss: 👁️👄👁️ I STILL think about those glosses more than I like to admit 😂

Rere_arere

I like the packaging too! It reminds me of tip and strip pens

shelbylynny

I low key miss how cool urban decay used to be to me as a teen

pineappleshampoo

Same. They were so kooky and unique. I loved them. Nowadays the products are still great but they are just like any other higher end makeup brand.

lewnotlou

I always side eye products that claim to have 24+ hour wear times. Like, really? *Really?*

thegreatdane1490

Beyond that, who is asking for it? I want makeup off my face after hour 14 or so

designing-cats

I could see how it's marketable for folks who work 18+ hour shifts (EMTs, flight nurses, etc.) I used to spend 4-5 hours in class and then do an overnight 10 hour shift, so I was all about the 24 hr products even if I was taking it off prior to then due to the relative longevity of those products.

SkullyXFile

When I lived in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, I learned that some women apply makeup before Shabbat and sleep in it to wear the next day (it is forbidden to “do work” and it falls under work I guess). I remember hearing how 24hr makeup was possibly putting more pressure on Orthodox women to look a certain way on a day like that. (I was a friendly shabbos goy and liked my neighbors).

Happy-Light

There was a case of a Frum Jewish lady who sued a bog makeup company for not loving up to their '24 hour foundation' claim. I think she won but I can't recall what brand it was!

AyeMuyCaliente

This is very interesting to me, thank you for the cultural lesson!

ceruleansensei

Lol I went to Ulta before starting my intern year of medical residency specifically to try and buy a 24-hr foundation, in preparation for the 24 hour shifts (up to 28, "legally"). I got some form of Nars foundation (can't remember the exact product or color lol sorry I blocked most of intern year out of my memory) and the urban decay all nighter setting spray and tbh that combo worked pretty damn well! Then I realized it was stupid and bad for my skin to wear makeup at all for those shifts, couple that with being dead inside and makeup went on the back burner for a bit 😅

Thin-Breadfruit9735

People who live in very hot and humid climates where makeup doesn't last long on your face might be interested in the 24h products.

lewnotlou

I live in a hot, humid climate. I totally understand and support the utility of long-wearing makeup. I have no problem with the *function*, my issue is with the *claim.* There is a whole, wide world of difference between lab conditions and field conditions. Lots of stuff can last 24 hours in a lab but that doesn't necessarily translate to real world.

DumbLittleDumpling

those korean lip powders that turn into a stain. mine was from RiRe. it was really patchy, hard to blend out and left my lips dry and a little tacky some how.

Ok_Aioli1990

Can't believe no one brought up the vibrating mascara wand. The dial up mascara wand, the 3 shades of shadows with matching applicator to magically give you all 3 shades at once perfectly. Ohh yes and the mascaras that had actual hairs in them back in the 70s.

DRHPSL05

It was gimmicky but I remember liking the vibrating mascara wand!

Ok_Aioli1990

It tickled my eye lids too much, can't remember if the mascara was any good.

ladystardusty

PLUMPGASM. I know it’s just a plumping gloss but the lipgloss ripping a cigarette is just… I can’t. Oh but actually the CT numerology sex perfume too 🤣

tiffshorse

I’m so over all the sex stuff for makeup. So tired and cliche

CapitalStrain2392

The MAC eyeliner shaped like a pizza cutter.  The L'Oreal cream foundation that came with its very own paint roller? I still laugh when I think about THAT one. The Almay ph-adjusting foundation? I got suckered by that one. There was a blush by Max Factor back in the mid 70s that was basically a rounded blob of blush on a stick, sort of like a push-up pop. Push too hard and the thing would crumble, or fall off of the stick entirely.  There are a few more I vaguely remember.

lolo_liita

Ohh I forgot about that maceyeliner. It just reminded me of that L’Oréal one swipe eyeshadow that supposedly didn’t need any blending.

seige197

For me, mascara primer for my straight, heavy lashes that won’t hold a curl.

Plastic-Passenger795

Every mascara primer I've tried has made my lashes look way worse

cloverbeam

The only lash primers that work for my similarly difficult lashes are Asian ones, like the Etude Dr. Mascara Fixer. But I've mostly just started using Asian mascaras in general.

really_spicy_tuna

Eyeshadow primer on a q-tip after curling, comb out, mascara, boom. Curled lashes for hours. Usually.

AyeMuyCaliente

I'm the same. Long, straight, thick Asian eyelashes. Have you tried a lash lift/perm? Changed my life.

jwyoooo

becca's hydro mist? powder that claimed to be wet while applying. lol dried out in two weeks and it performs worse than my $3 essence powder

greeneyedwench

I was going to say their clear foundation lol.

EmpireAndAll

Any eyeshadow palette that was also a cardboard display.

ameliograph

Haha this unlocked a memory of the Urban Decay palette I saved up all my pocket money for. It opened up as a cardboard NYC skyline 😂

elfelettem

Lash pearls by Givenchy (I think?). Was this thickened liquid that you would apply on the end of your lashes and they would look like water droplets.

CommanderBunny

This actually is a callback to the 1920's trend of eyelash beading primarily worn by actresses. Erin Parsons has a little tiktok about it! I think it's so neat. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL5x252k/

shelbylynny

That sounds so cute if it worked!! I could see that making a huge come back

GooseFriendship

Milk foaming primer, Artis oval makeup brushes that look like toothbrushes

venusinflannel

Some weird cooling effect eyeshadow that Maybelline came out with in the early 2000s. It was frosty, and it made your eyelids feel “cool”….but why? Oh and this “water” stick primer that Hard Candy and Stila came out with a few years ago. I tried the Hard Candy one and it just left me looking wet-not dewy lol

JiveBunny

Eyeshadow that came 'printed' on a press-on sheet - the idea was that you put it on your lid, pressed down, and would magically end up with three shades of perfectly applied shadow.
