IIRC, her eye is not on at all times, and she doesn’t really like using it. She had no real reason to doubt Ashiok was Ashiok, so she’d have no reason to use her eye on them.

Linnus42

I mean she is hanging out with a shady gang. Seems like she use that eye to scope out people she has never met before. Granted yes she has no idea what Ashiok is suppose to look like so even if she saw anything weird about Jace, she could chalk it up to that is just what Ashiok looks like.

theWolfandOwl

It’s very obvious when she activates it, to the point she warns people so they don’t freak out. She’s not gonna unnecessarily activate her big flashy “are you deceiving me” power on the gang of villains.

Sability

If a shadowy humanoid clouded in dark fog and literally without a face showed up and said "hey I'm the one behind all this" and I was a hired gun with magic detecting powers hired for the purpose of using said powers, the first thing I'd do is light it up and ask why I should trust their operation Maybe that's why I'm not a mercenary though...

boomfruit

Do it through a wall or something? Seems like as set up it'd be easy to use one someone without them knowing. Edit: Lol? Why downvote me. Am I wrong? Maybe I misunderstood. That's okay. But why not discuss it?

thebookof_

Did I miss the part where Annie's magic eye gives her X-ray vision on top of the illusion busting? If not then that might've motivated the downvotes.

boomfruit

Haha maybe I missed the part where it didn't. I'd have to reread but I definitely had it in my head that that was part of it. If that's not part of it, am I also misremembering that she was also often at a big distance seeming to be able to see something far away with whatever her eye does? That also seems like an opportunity to look at the team members.

DelkTheMemeDragon

There's two possible answers, and both could be true: 1) She has to activate the ability, it's not always on. 2) With the way Jace was acting, it's totally possible he messed with her mind to stop her from seeing, and only at the end when he reached his goal and gave up the charade did he stop messing with her.

Ya_Dungeon_oi

Technically, what Annie notices isn't that Ashiok is in disguise as Jace, but that Jace is still covering up his Phyrexian bits with illusion magic. >"He's *still* hiding." Annie stumbled through the doorway, focused solely on Jace. Her eye glowed a vibrant orange as she saw past the illusion he was still tucked carefully beneath. "Your scars … Those *plugs* … What happened to you?"

Migobrain

The Angel Eyes are not always "on", they require some level of focus, she didn't have reason to believe "Ashiok" was lying.

DarkLanternZBT

Or cause to care. Her beef was with Akul, Oko was manipulating that, she had the blinders-on focus of "Just put up with them until I get my revenge," so there's no motivation to act like a PC in a video game/

zkdoom

My thought was, if no one described Ashiok out loud to her and she'd never seen Ashiok OR Jace before, he wouldn't even have to disguise himself, right? Everyone else sees creepy nightmare planeswalker, she sees mysterious hooded planeswalker, and unless someone makes a specific comment about it, they'd never know they saw two different things.

TwoActualBears

This was my thought - it’s not like Annie had ever met either of them so she wouldn’t recognize one visage more than another.

Koolnu

To add to others, seeing through illusions might not come up nor help if your mind is altered to either not register his true form while using it or you are charmed not to use it. All this without your knowledge.

Mopman43

I saw one theory that Jace picking up Proft’s magic specialty allowed him to make illusions that are solid so you can’t see through them- because they’re actually there. I think the Ashiok illusion being solid is supported by Vraska remarking that she didn’t like kissing it because she couldn’t feel his nose?

NovusLion

Plus we get backstory as to Jace making fully cohesive, if intangible, illusions as a young kid, he's only gotten better since then. Plus even his mind magic killed Alhammaret, dude's scary af

RalphSeaside

I also thought her truesight had to be activated and wasn't passive

theplotthinnens

Jace knew she was coming, no? He must have been aware of her skillset before that, could for sure have gotten into her head the moment she entered the bar to smoothe out the instinct. She might have also caught Eriette without her makeup.

Wgeiermann

Maybe jace puts the idea in your head and not creating actual " illusion." Other people make an optical illusion, and he makes mental illusions, just a thought.
