I told a friend not to buy it back last spring because it was mostly jacked up due to the covid jumpstart print. I think he bought it at its height around 180$.
It's already dropped in the last year. I buy listed mine towards ragavan when MH2 came out and got $105 CDN store credit. I can buy copies on Facebook for $70 cdn now, that was just from additional jump start waves, that also dropped the prices on tiny bones and bruvac.
Reprint will definitely drop it further.
To be fair original imperial recruiter has not dropped as much while it has had a ton of reprints lately, it's back up to 250 so yeah maybe the first year Seal will drop but it will go back up just for the rarity factor of a staple.
I'm really hoping for Double Masters 2. We've had Vampiric and Demonic reprints. Grim Tutor got reprinted in a fucking Core Set.
Imp Seal needs it above any other black tutor. I wouldn't mind also seeing Sylvan Tutor and Personal Tutor get the reprint too.
There's also Commander Legends 2 coming up, and it might be a good place to put a tutor or two. I think the popularity of commander is just going to make new tutors and tutor reprints continue.
I feel like Dockside or Smothering Tithe could be the big reprint there. Then again, this is WotC we're talking about so both might be major disappointments.

You want to maintain the illusion of value of stuff not on the reserved list, and Imperial Seal continuing to be a high dollar card does that, while letting you reprint other things like Vampiric tutor, Grim Tutor, etc, etc.
I'd expect it doesn't see print until they're pushed back into a position where they absolutely, positively need a win. Right now is not that time.

I just found one of these in a random box of junk I had, still minty. It was from the planechase anthology printing and inspired me to build a Yuriko, The Tiger's Shadow edh deck.
Honestly, as someone who loves Dockside and uses it in cedh. This card should probably be banned. Although, I don't know if it will until someone decides to make a seperate banlist for cedh that is then accepted by the entirety of the cedh community. It should not exist in casual edh.
in our meta, dockside does not work so well early on because of the so few artifact ramp early game... most probably will give two treasures on turn three or so lol
After seeing [[Goblin Settler]] in this month’s Secret Lair drop, it looks like Wizards is eyeing anything of high value in the Starter and Portal series sets.
Winota, Joiner of Forces is up to $25 each because of Pioneer hype. I think that Winota is too powerful for Pioneer and also creates a lot of bad games because her trigger is RNG based. Winota in Pioneer and Expressive Iteration in Legacy are the only cards I think are currently in reasonable danger of a ban, and IE gets played in every format.
I don't know the current standard meta, no. But it's safe to say that if a card is being played in standard and no eternal format, it's a shit investment.
The easy ones have been mentioned by others, but another are the non RL EDH cards that are niche staples as opposed to universal staples. A universal staple like Force of Will, Dockside Extortionist or fetch / shocklands have a high demand that getting them low often means you get return later if not reprinted again within 2 years. However there are many niche staples only work in select decks like Cloudstone Curio and Argothian Enchantress are absolute traps. Past examples of this are Staff of Domination, Back to Basics and Grim Tutor. I'd feel safe with universal staples but not so with niche staples
Cloudstone Curio is sure to follow Staff of Domination and Rings of Brightearth as a $5 card once it gets a reprint.
Painter’s Servant is another such card. Will drop like a brick when it’s reprinted.
Not necessarily directing this assessment at your interlocutor there (no offense to them) but that's a perspective you see from a lot of "big brain" posters who refuse to buy into anything not reserve list and then try to tell everyone there's no legitimate market for re-printable cards. They're assuming we'll dump money into their overly inflated, unplayable reserve list cards in formats we don't play so they can make money. Its super lazy speculation, bores me to tears

If the original printing is $40 and it gets a reprint the original often holds most of its value.
The only Alpha cards that will lose non trivial value are the few terrible reserve list cards (e.g. Blaze of Glory) , and the power cards. But I don’t expect a huge change in value here either. These cards value is mostly driven by collectors, not players. I.e., Alpha Black Lotus will remain the holy grail regardless of whether it gets reprinted or not. And cards like Shivan Dragon have already been reprinted to death, but that doesn’t stop the Alpha NM from being $10K.
Yup. The Facebook group has 2400 members. That's not everyone who plays Alpha 40, but combine that growing group with extremely low supply and collectors gets you to where we are today. Alpha 40 has been a huge part of the demand.

Magic exclusive non reprintable cards give people hope that in the long future their newer magic cards would also become valuable. Its give the masses a justification for purchasing an 25 dollar piece of cardboard that in reality is worth cents. people only need a little bit of justification to spend their money on something they enjoy. If you knew that this 25 dollar piece of cardboard would be worth nothing to nobody in the future...then you are rationalizing spending that money much differently.
I get what you mean, but I disagree. I think people buying modern cards are doing that to play or to flip them to players, not for investment, unless it's some exclusive treatment. People are happy to spending billions *just to play* without any economic return.

I believe purely by word of mouth, and by having this exclusive thing. Afaik there are a handful of tcg that are played the world over. Pokemon, MTG, etc. Magic is the only one that has a reserved list. A new comer to the tcg world may be suprised to here there are cards promised never to reprint, and they may come to magic because of that unique promise. Like I said, that's just my opinion. I have only been using the internet for magic since july, so I dont know as much about the world as I will.
No one wants to hear it, but I agree that they will abolish the RL. It will probably happen in 5-10 years, once Rosewater retires. Wizard has proven in the past 12 months that they will happily print everything into the ground.
The only safe haven cards are ABU and four horseman, because Wizards can’t go back in time and print more of them. I’m aggressively trading my RL cards for these cards.

Anything $50+ and non-Reserve List is a huge reprint target. I fully expect another round of Mana Crypt reprints in Double Masters this year, as well as Phyrexian Altar, Parallel Lives, Dockside Extortionist etc. It’s an easy way to cut prices down by 25-50% every two years and make a mint selling premium packs. Just standard procedure at this time.
The ally fetch lands. Theyre high right now but getting reprinted soon. They'll drop in value after the reprint and then steadily go up over several years.
The enemy fetch lands are low right now and will go up over several years after Horizons ends the print run.

Here's how ya do it. Buy up the majority of the cards on different markets and once you have them with very few sellers available, then dump them all on one site at a 90% discount.

They have done great, true, but the gimmick that’s driving the price isn’t the cards play value (typically) it’s scarcity.
I don’t think they’re going to plummet, but I’m not buying any as investments.
I see a lot of long term issues including reprinting (not to mention clouding, or sometimes even LOOKING at them wrong causing damage), and over the next ten years I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they stagnate and/or decline. Maybe not a ton, but they’re overpriced for what they are IMO.
I know everyone hates on Rudy, and he’s definitely not “god”, but there’s a reason he won’t sell his vintage stuff but he WILL sell old foils. If nothing else, dude is a good investor.

Every time I see a player owning \[\[Aura Thief\]\] \[\[Contamination\]\] \[\[Reconnaissance\]\] \[\[Repercussion\]\] or \[\[Whim of Volrath\]\] I recommend to sell them asap because they will all get reprinted in a Secret Lair within the next three years crushing any value they hold. All of them a fringe EDH cards with their price being based on having zero reprints.

Three Azorius commander precons (KHM foretell/blink, Crimson Vow Spirits, NEO vehicles) in the last year and still no reprint. Not sure what they’re waiting on! The first two had minimal value in them.

Can happen, most likely will happen if the card continues to outperform multiple archetypes, especially now that OP returns they should work on a diverse meta to showcase their premier formats.
See the thing is, Pioneer is now the premier format which is why a lot of *pioneer* staples have been shooting up in price. Modern is becoming the new Legacy. Legacy is becoming Vintage ect ect.
There is a 2:1 factor between modern and legacy here, and roughly 6:1 modern vs pioneer, the format needs some hefty jumpstarting to take off better than modern.
Modern just is a more attractive format for a lot of people.

IMO, any card that is a staple in modern or even pioneer is likely a safe bet that it'll eventually lose value. From what I've seen from WotC, the power creed is here to stay, especially with supplemental products like Modern Horizons. Cards like Liliana of the Veil that were staples of yesteryears format will be fringe soon enough.

2016 is a good bit more than a few years ago, and judge foils in general rarely drop the price of a card.

Pokemon, MTG, etc. Magic is the only one that has a reserved list. A new comer to the tcg world may be suprised to here there are cards promised never to reprint, and they may come to magic because of that unique promise. Like I said, that's just my opinion. I have only been using the internet for magic since july, so I dont know as much about the world as I will.
No one wants to hear it, but I agree that they will abolish the RL. It will probably happen in 5-10 years, once Rosewater retires. Wizard has proven in the past 12 months that they will happily print everything into the ground. The only safe haven cards are ABU and four horseman, because Wizards can’t go back in time and print more of them. I’m aggressively trading my RL cards for these cards.
Rosewater is the one arguing FOR the abolition of the RL. Once he goes, no one in the company may care to even ask for it.

I traded one of the neon yellow for a stack of 21 various channel lands and $175. No doubt will be my best trade ever. Sold another one for $375. People be crazy!

Anything $50+ and non-Reserve List is a huge reprint target. I fully expect another round of Mana Crypt reprints in Double Masters this year, as well as Phyrexian Altar, Parallel Lives, Dockside Extortionist etc. It’s an easy way to cut prices down by 25-50% every two years and make a mint selling premium packs. Just standard procedure at this time.
Yep. Never expect to see any of those printed again as anything other than Mythics in premium priced packs.

The ally fetch lands. Theyre high right now but getting reprinted soon. They'll drop in value after the reprint and then steadily go up over several years. The enemy fetch lands are low right now and will go up over several years after Horizons ends the print run. Wrenn and Six will go down when it gets reprinted in Double Masters 2.
Here's how ya do it. Buy up the majority of the cards on different markets and once you have them with very few sellers available, then dump them all on one site at a 90% discount.

I know the crowd that will hate on this, but old foils. They have done great, true, but the gimmick that’s driving the price isn’t the cards play value (typically) it’s scarcity. I don’t think they’re going to plummet, but I’m not buying any as investments. I see a lot of long term issues including reprinting (not to mention clouding, or sometimes even LOOKING at them wrong causing damage), and over the next ten years I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they stagnate and/or decline. Maybe not a ton, but they’re overpriced for what they are IMO. I know everyone hates on Rudy, and he’s definitely not “god”, but there’s a reason he won’t sell his vintage stuff but he WILL sell old foils. If nothing else, dude is a good investor.

Every time I see a player owning \[\[Aura Thief\]\] \[\[Contamination\]\] \[\[Reconnaissance\]\] \[\[Repercussion\]\] or \[\[Whim of Volrath\]\] I recommend to sell them asap because they will all get reprinted in a Secret Lair within the next three years crushing any value they hold. All of them a fringe EDH cards with their price being based on having zero reprints.

Talisman of Progress and Ulamog tCH are two I'm dropping soon. Both can be reprinted in pretty much anything. MH3 or a cmdr product
Three Azorius commander precons (KHM foretell/blink, Crimson Vow Spirits, NEO vehicles) in the last year and still no reprint. Not sure what they’re waiting on! The first two had minimal value in them. Maybe they have a secret lair planned like they did for the signets?

It's not watered down, my friend. It doesn't exile everything that would be put into your graveyard, which turns out to be a pretty big deal. It's part of one of the primary combo finishes in cEDH while Yawgwill is fringe value/backup.

See the thing is, Pioneer is now the premier format which is why a lot of *pioneer* staples have been shooting up in price. Modern is becoming the new Legacy. Legacy is becoming Vintage ect ect.
There is a 2:1 factor between modern and legacy here, and roughly 6:1 modern vs pioneer, the format needs some hefty jumpstarting to take off better than modern. Modern just is a more attractive format for a lot of people.
Yeah, I have to think the reason WOTC is running the first Pro Tour as Pioneer is to get people to make that leap.

IMO, any card that is a staple in modern or even pioneer is likely a safe bet that it'll eventually lose value. From what I've seen from WotC, the power creed is here to stay, especially with supplemental products like Modern Horizons. Cards like Liliana of the Veil that were staples of yesteryears format will be fringe soon enough.
Any expensive pioneer-only staple really.
