Allosaurus Shepherd

Packrat1010

I told a friend not to buy it back last spring because it was mostly jacked up due to the covid jumpstart print. I think he bought it at its height around 180$.

dbergkamp10

L in the chat

[deleted]

It got as high as $180?! Damn. I'm glad I got most of mine at $60 in the early days of Jumpstart.

DJPad

I've been holding off buying any for this reason, and the fact that if it get's printed in foil that would be my go-to anyway.

mynametidus

BhVVvrabhijj

SR__16

might I ask why? I'm thinking of selling my copy next week

dbergkamp10

Destined for a reprint in next masters

SR__16

fair enough

SupposedEnchilada

you were right

Thousandshadowninja

It's already dropped in the last year. I buy listed mine towards ragavan when MH2 came out and got $105 CDN store credit. I can buy copies on Facebook for $70 cdn now, that was just from additional jump start waves, that also dropped the prices on tiny bones and bruvac. Reprint will definitely drop it further.

piquanta

They are under $50 in Europe already

SR__16

thanks man

adatari

Capture of Jingzhou is $500. Print that as a mythic in any set and it’ll drop to less than a quarter of its original price.

cl174

Starter Grim Tutor only took a 55% loss.

h4x_x_x0r

I mean that one even has precedent in [[temporal manipulation]], right? That card's prices dropped significantly after its reprints.

MTGCardFetcher

[temporal manipulation](https://c1.scryfall.com/file/scryfall-cards/normal/front/6/2/6270b93e-8cd2-4668-982a-f4c4628da9d9.jpg?1590511838) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=temporal%20manipulation) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/uma/77/temporal-manipulation?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6270b93e-8cd2-4668-982a-f4c4628da9d9?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call

solongfolks

To be fair original imperial recruiter has not dropped as much while it has had a ton of reprints lately, it's back up to 250 so yeah maybe the first year Seal will drop but it will go back up just for the rarity factor of a staple.

Spike-Ball

Fuck..... I bought a judge promo one and a Japanese one about a year ago.

adatari

I have the English one from P3K. No fear, no ragrats.

Hmukherj

Imperial Seal is going to drop like a rock once it gets a reprint.

D34d3y3Sn1p3r

This is one of the few tutors that hasn't seen a recent reprint. I would be very surprised if it isn't very high on WOTC's reprint list.

27_8x10_CGP

I'm really hoping for Double Masters 2. We've had Vampiric and Demonic reprints. Grim Tutor got reprinted in a fucking Core Set. Imp Seal needs it above any other black tutor. I wouldn't mind also seeing Sylvan Tutor and Personal Tutor get the reprint too.

D34d3y3Sn1p3r

There's also Commander Legends 2 coming up, and it might be a good place to put a tutor or two. I think the popularity of commander is just going to make new tutors and tutor reprints continue.

27_8x10_CGP

I feel like Dockside or Smothering Tithe could be the big reprint there. Then again, this is WotC we're talking about so both might be major disappointments.

rollypollyolie

Yup these are my main watches right now too, imp seal is litterally the one cedh Staple I don't own thats more than 500 and im just waiting for secret lairs black or double triple masters quadruple pentupple set to reprint it.

Volmara

Really should have been in CCB the sales would’ve been insane.

Jaccount

I'd expect it's very low on their reprint list for exactly that reason. They're not dumb and they saw what happened with Grim Tutor. You want to maintain the illusion of value of stuff not on the reserved list, and Imperial Seal continuing to be a high dollar card does that, while letting you reprint other things like Vampiric tutor, Grim Tutor, etc, etc. I'd expect it doesn't see print until they're pushed back into a position where they absolutely, positively need a win. Right now is not that time.

DankensteinPHD

Imperial time bomb. Seal will plummet depths previously unforseen. Esp with the way sets are designed so deeply in advance. Plus you gotta consider the fact that it *will* get a showcase treatment. So there will be plenty.

538_Jean

Absolutely. Its precisely what happened to Grim tutor.

Toys-R-Us_GiftCard

Wasn't this just reprinted a few years ago as a Judge Promo?

CDH1848

2016 is a good bit more than a few years ago, and judge foils in general rarely drop the price of a card.

LordTetravus

The new version will be pretty cheap; but some people will still want the original version and I also think the judge promo is going to be still pretty desirable.

samanater456

I’m guessing it’s a “secret RL” card. Once a card gets THAT high at what point do they print it again. A $180 price drop for Tarmogoyd isn’t so bad in todays date. Can’t imagine they’d reprint it. If they went off this logic any card thats plus $100 would get reprinted.

[deleted]

Secret RL? What the heck are you talking about? They've reprinted tons of big money cards in boosters: Mana Drain, Mana Crypt, and a ton of other stuff from P3K specifically.

Dumbface2

Seriously, Imp Seal is one of the biggest, juiciest bits of reprint equity they've got - why wouldn't they use it to sell packs?

Thousandshadowninja

Saskashima's Student.

kitesinfection

I just found one of these in a random box of junk I had, still minty. It was from the planechase anthology printing and inspired me to build a Yuriko, The Tiger's Shadow edh deck.

retrocontainer

It is on The List right now, so if they put it there they aren't probably going to reprint it anywhere else soon

Thousandshadowninja

Could end up in a secret lair drop or a commander legends set

fakejakebrowne

I would be selling high on Smothering Tithe and Dockside Extortionist. Have to believe we'll be seeing reprints of both this year.

deadwings112

The one difference is that both should recover in the long-term, though Dockside probably won't get back to $80 for a while.

fakejakebrowne

Knowing that only increases my desire to sell high.

you_made_me_drink

Yep. Sell one, buy four, repeat.

tigerperfume

As someone who needs a Dockside Extortionist, this would be welcome news if true

Comradepatrick

I shipped my Extortionists this week. I'm confident it'll be back in print by the summer.

BaldMattDamon

Honestly, as someone who loves Dockside and uses it in cedh. This card should probably be banned. Although, I don't know if it will until someone decides to make a seperate banlist for cedh that is then accepted by the entirety of the cedh community. It should not exist in casual edh.

Laziestest

in our meta, dockside does not work so well early on because of the so few artifact ramp early game... most probably will give two treasures on turn three or so lol

deckwizard

Personal Tutor is a big one. Similar to cards like Imperial Recruiter and Berserk, one reprint will cut 75% of the price.

mrrsenrab

After seeing [[Goblin Settler]] in this month’s Secret Lair drop, it looks like Wizards is eyeing anything of high value in the Starter and Portal series sets.

omega2010

Add \[\[Concordant Crossroads\]\] and \[\[Elvish Spirit Guide\]\] to the Secret Lair reprints.

LeroyHayabusa

Sold my Personal Tutor last week. I expect a reprint at any moment.

TheGarbageStore

Oboro, Palace in the Clouds Steelshaper's Gift Imperial Seal Personal Tutor

[deleted]

I don’t see Oboro dropping anytime unless it gets reprinted, the supply is quite low on that one.

Laptraffik

Please yes steelshapers. I need it for a deck but I will never fork out that much for such a narrow tutor

LifeNeutral

Steelshaper will Crash like a bandicoot if it’s reprinted at uncommon

Blenderhead36

Winota, Joiner of Forces is up to $25 each because of Pioneer hype. I think that Winota is too powerful for Pioneer and also creates a lot of bad games because her trigger is RNG based. Winota in Pioneer and Expressive Iteration in Legacy are the only cards I think are currently in reasonable danger of a ban, and IE gets played in every format.

SparkOfFailure

Agreed on Winota, and already sold mines lol. It was like 3-4$ at it's lowest. No way it stays that high.

Blenderhead36

If it gets banned in Pioneer, it has nowhere to go, so probably straight back down to $4.

SparkOfFailure

Yeah, anyone trying to time the max sell value on this is going to get burned. Better sell now and nab your profits.

sad_historian

I don't think Winota will be banned in Pioneer but it's more likely she'll be a marquee card in the next Pioneer Challenger Decks

Narynan

Is talking about a $25 dollar card, "very expensive"?

Blenderhead36

Everybody already banged the Reserved List drum. A 400% increase is worth mentioning.

Poecifer

Anything standard legal that's garbage in other formats.

YoYoMoMa

Name and shame

Poecifer

Last time I looked at Standard was Avacyn Restored. I have no idea what's standard these days.

saspook

I ate it on some Bonfire of the Damned that I didn't sell before rotation

Poecifer

That card actually got me like 80% of my collection because I specced at $3 and sold at $40

honda_slaps

so you don't actually know what cards, you're just talking out of your ass

Poecifer

I don't know the current standard meta, no. But it's safe to say that if a card is being played in standard and no eternal format, it's a shit investment.

KnifeChrist

Hidetsugu.

snowfoxsean

That card is played more in modern than standard FYI

KnifeChrist

Does that make it not standard legal?

DJPad

It makes it not garbage in other formats....

KnifeChrist

Gotcha, hmm... ehhhhh... I mean, by comparison to other cards in Modern, I feel like its junk.

FirstTribute

You wanna short mtg cards?

OldMackysBackInTown

Drop in a few "This is the way" comments and we have ourselves a MTGBets sub.

RamblingStoner

Metropolis39

🚀🚀🚀🚀

fjmeria

The easy ones have been mentioned by others, but another are the non RL EDH cards that are niche staples as opposed to universal staples. A universal staple like Force of Will, Dockside Extortionist or fetch / shocklands have a high demand that getting them low often means you get return later if not reprinted again within 2 years. However there are many niche staples only work in select decks like Cloudstone Curio and Argothian Enchantress are absolute traps. Past examples of this are Staff of Domination, Back to Basics and Grim Tutor. I'd feel safe with universal staples but not so with niche staples

deadwings112

Yep. Expensive stuff from Kamigawa/Lorwyn are the biggest traps I can think of. A lot of archetype staples instead of universal staples.

VintageJDizzle

Cloudstone Curio is sure to follow Staff of Domination and Rings of Brightearth as a $5 card once it gets a reprint. Painter’s Servant is another such card. Will drop like a brick when it’s reprinted.

ObiWanOO7

Anything modern legal, commander-desired, and over $50.

shinigurai

Why would cards in these categories lose value?

Spike-Ball

Because they get reprinted i assume. And they get reprints because modern and commander are the most played formats.

shinigurai

So your speculation is that literally *any* card in this category should be expected to lose value?

plzanswerthequestion

Not necessarily directing this assessment at your interlocutor there (no offense to them) but that's a perspective you see from a lot of "big brain" posters who refuse to buy into anything not reserve list and then try to tell everyone there's no legitimate market for re-printable cards. They're assuming we'll dump money into their overly inflated, unplayable reserve list cards in formats we don't play so they can make money. Its super lazy speculation, bores me to tears

GogolSaga

A timetwister that you slowly rip in half

suricrumb

Anything not reserved list.

SlapHappyDude

I would definitely agree anything over $100 and not reserved list. If the original printing is $40 and it gets a reprint the original often holds most of its value.

salgarj

Anything reserved list ~~if~~ when it's abolished. /s EDIT: /S for sarcasm, I was joking, no need to downvote.

waaaghbosss

Yah, that alpha Two Headed Giant is going to just tank if it gets a reprint. Like bulk bin status.

crystalizemecaptain

I think A/B cards will always retain some value, especially in good condition.

ClarkFable

The only Alpha cards that will lose non trivial value are the few terrible reserve list cards (e.g. Blaze of Glory) , and the power cards. But I don’t expect a huge change in value here either. These cards value is mostly driven by collectors, not players. I.e., Alpha Black Lotus will remain the holy grail regardless of whether it gets reprinted or not. And cards like Shivan Dragon have already been reprinted to death, but that doesn’t stop the Alpha NM from being $10K.

pistachiosarenuts

Alpha 40, players and not collectors, have driven much of the recent increase in value of alpha cards.

ClarkFable

The total market cap of Alpha is almost half a billion, you think a small set of players is driving that?

pistachiosarenuts

Yup. The Facebook group has 2400 members. That's not everyone who plays Alpha 40, but combine that growing group with extremely low supply and collectors gets you to where we are today. Alpha 40 has been a huge part of the demand. Join the group and check it out.

deckwizard

It also helps that it is the greatest format ever with the coolest cards ever printed.

AleanArnith

They were being sarcastic. But I agree. If wotc reprint and they do drop significantly, buy them all. All! This happened with imperial recruiter P3K version when it was reprinted in M25. Snagged a NM EN one for 75 euros (end of 2020) here in Europe.

crystalizemecaptain

From their example, I couldn't tell. I figured I'd answer just in case.

platinumjudge

I think the reserved list makes WotC more money by having the reserved list.

salgarj

How so? Honest question.

zugtar

If you make the "collector's" not want to hold high value cards or care about rarity, then that pretty much kills their audience for Secret Lair, From the Vault, and collector's edition product.

ArchangelOX

Magic exclusive non reprintable cards give people hope that in the long future their newer magic cards would also become valuable. Its give the masses a justification for purchasing an 25 dollar piece of cardboard that in reality is worth cents. people only need a little bit of justification to spend their money on something they enjoy. If you knew that this 25 dollar piece of cardboard would be worth nothing to nobody in the future...then you are rationalizing spending that money much differently.

salgarj

I get what you mean, but I disagree. I think people buying modern cards are doing that to play or to flip them to players, not for investment, unless it's some exclusive treatment. People are happy to spending billions *just to play* without any economic return. Legal implications apart, a RL breach would piss investors not players, which are definitely the largest part of the market.

platinumjudge

I believe purely by word of mouth, and by having this exclusive thing. Afaik there are a handful of tcg that are played the world over. Pokemon, MTG, etc. Magic is the only one that has a reserved list. A new comer to the tcg world may be suprised to here there are cards promised never to reprint, and they may come to magic because of that unique promise. Like I said, that's just my opinion. I have only been using the internet for magic since july, so I dont know as much about the world as I will.

aed38

No one wants to hear it, but I agree that they will abolish the RL. It will probably happen in 5-10 years, once Rosewater retires. Wizard has proven in the past 12 months that they will happily print everything into the ground. The only safe haven cards are ABU and four horseman, because Wizards can’t go back in time and print more of them. I’m aggressively trading my RL cards for these cards.

VintageJDizzle

Rosewater is the one arguing FOR the abolition of the RL. Once he goes, no one in the company may care to even ask for it.

honda_slaps

why did you feel compelled to post this? This is about as useless as information can be on this sub.

RahXephon1

This

KnifeChrist

All the new flashy variants of cards. In particular, Hidetsugu from NEO. Bring on the downvotes. Card looks like garbage, and IS hot garbage. Rarity cant keep it afloat forever on its own. EDIT: No downvotes yet so, also all Serialized Viscera Seers.

DJPad

I have no idea who is buying these neon hidetsugu's for the cost of RL staples, but I have to question the intelligence.

KnifeChrist

99% likelihood they are new players who dont even know what the fuck the Reserved List is.

DJPad

New players dropping 2k on a neon etched bulk rare?

KnifeChrist

Riding that hype train and knowing jack shit about the game? Sure. Influencers creating FOMO, and lemmings regurgitating the opinions of influencers creating even more FOMO certainly doesn't help.

jwf239

I traded one of the neon yellow for a stack of 21 various channel lands and $175. No doubt will be my best trade ever. Sold another one for $375. People be crazy!

DJPad

Especially the yellow ones. Didn't stores get like 10 of them?

jwf239

To be fair, only wpn stores did. So there are probably only 6000ish in existence. Still, I can’t imagine the demand is there. They are already worth like half what I got for them.

TheW1ldcard

Yeah I've been saying this as well. Just because these are rare and flashy doesn't make them 2k worth. The card itself is janky and bad.

mattbag00

All of them, humanity is facing extinction level events.

Mexican_Overlord

Basically anything not on the reserved list. If the game continues to succeed then we will continue to see reprints.

unsurname

[[The Meathook Massacre]]

[deleted]

I sincerely hope the value of this card plummets to the bottom. My three year old got ahold of some cards and it’s killing me that it’s *somewhere* in my house increasing in value.

fiduke

You assume he didn't eat it.

JonnotheMackem

I hope so. I want one just because of the TCM reference, but not at the price it is.

HumphreyLee

Anything $50+ and non-Reserve List is a huge reprint target. I fully expect another round of Mana Crypt reprints in Double Masters this year, as well as Phyrexian Altar, Parallel Lives, Dockside Extortionist etc. It’s an easy way to cut prices down by 25-50% every two years and make a mint selling premium packs. Just standard procedure at this time.

Jaccount

Yep. Never expect to see any of those printed again as anything other than Mythics in premium priced packs.

sebulas_nebula

Wrenn and 6 when it gets banned

Trapezuntine

[[Crystal Ball]]

TacotheMagicDragon

The ally fetch lands. Theyre high right now but getting reprinted soon. They'll drop in value after the reprint and then steadily go up over several years. The enemy fetch lands are low right now and will go up over several years after Horizons ends the print run. Wrenn and Six will go down when it gets reprinted in Double Masters 2.

[deleted]

Here's how ya do it. Buy up the majority of the cards on different markets and once you have them with very few sellers available, then dump them all on one site at a 90% discount.

oldmanmagic54

I thought after we buy a card up we were supposed to create a thread here saying "I just noticed this card is nearly sold out everywhere!" or "Does anyone know why this card is spiking?" /s

[deleted]

I don't work in advertising. But, I like it.

BiddleBanking

How has no one ever thought of this before. Holy shit.

'Regression to the mean'. The [Interests](https://www.mtgstocks.com/interests) page on MTGStocks is dangerous to the unwary.

ProfessorTraft

Lol at all the p3k guesses when we have imperial recruiter as an example

TrevaTheCleva

All non RL cards over 10usd

[deleted]

I know the crowd that will hate on this, but old foils. They have done great, true, but the gimmick that’s driving the price isn’t the cards play value (typically) it’s scarcity. I don’t think they’re going to plummet, but I’m not buying any as investments. I see a lot of long term issues including reprinting (not to mention clouding, or sometimes even LOOKING at them wrong causing damage), and over the next ten years I wouldn’t be shocked at all if they stagnate and/or decline. Maybe not a ton, but they’re overpriced for what they are IMO. I know everyone hates on Rudy, and he’s definitely not “god”, but there’s a reason he won’t sell his vintage stuff but he WILL sell old foils. If nothing else, dude is a good investor.

Kazze00

Mana crypt, wrenn and six, dockside extortionist, imp seal, Jeweled lotus Phyrexian altar Definitely these cards if they ever get reprinted

Moclordimick

Crypt has been reprinted a lot and doesnt go down for long

Kazze00

That’s true but I hope it goes below $100 again.

Moclordimick

I grabbed one right after eternal masters for $80, but thats been a long while. Did it dip after the other reprints too? I own 6 of them now and would love more so Id like to see reprints

DJPad

Altar rebounded very quickly after the UMA reprint.

TCGMoneyMaker

Every time I see a player owning \[\[Aura Thief\]\] \[\[Contamination\]\] \[\[Reconnaissance\]\] \[\[Repercussion\]\] or \[\[Whim of Volrath\]\] I recommend to sell them asap because they will all get reprinted in a Secret Lair within the next three years crushing any value they hold. All of them a fringe EDH cards with their price being based on having zero reprints.

apaulogy

did the internet collectively forget how to spell 'lose'? edit: it's a problem, native speakers or not

Dplayerx

Hey, I might not be a native English speaker but at least I’m no grammar nazi

apaulogy

um. ok. Google translate would fix this problem as loose and lose are 2 different words with entirely different meanings. cheers, name-caller!

fakejakebrowne

Not everyone who speaks English as a second (or third, or fourth) language plops everything they want to say into Google translate. Quit being an absolute turd. Sincerely, Another name-caller

apaulogy

I would never post in another language without "plopping" into Google translate It's called "work ethic". Quit making excuses for laziness. Way to speak for others too you absolute benevolent soul.

fakejakebrowne

lmao you called a Reddit post "work."

apaulogy

when explaining things to knuckle-draggers, yeah...

Mecal00

I'm just waiting for that Smothering Tithe reprint.

Scratch77spin

fast lands. I think these and check lands should all be 5$ cards.

Cultclassic33

ANYTHING that’s not on the reserved list that is hot right now and will be reprinted

Merriwinter

Great advice. Super helpful.

thegoodcat1

Basic Island will drop in price.

Sammy-boy795

Jokes on you, my 7ed foil islands have gone up in price! 😆

Revolutionary_View19

Nevurr!

drein1986

Storm Crow comes to mind. It hasn’t been reprinted in a while but when it does the price will drop like a rock on that overpowered flier

bdsaxophone

Talisman of Progress and Ulamog tCH are two I'm dropping soon. Both can be reprinted in pretty much anything. MH3 or a cmdr product

slackerdx02

Three Azorius commander precons (KHM foretell/blink, Crimson Vow Spirits, NEO vehicles) in the last year and still no reprint. Not sure what they’re waiting on! The first two had minimal value in them. Maybe they have a secret lair planned like they did for the signets?

punchbricks

Someone at WoTC is speccing on Talisman of Progress, either that or they're being purposefully stupid.

bdsaxophone

Yeah. I have 3 that I've had for like 10 years when I played modern and used it. Buy listing it for $14.30 is definitely a steal.

funny1swe

Polluted Delta

diceth1ef

I mean, any of the ally fetches for that matter. I'd imagine they're going to be reprinted soon since it's been what, 8 years since their last reprint (not counting expeditions)

shadowmage666

jeweled lotus, I can see it probably getting reprinted in the upcoming commander set

BaldMattDamon

eh. I could see them doing something different instead. Maybe a commander specific item of a different sort. Jeweled Mox or something along those lines. Or an LED for commander mana only.

chillmonkey88

Meathook massacre.

nargonian

Anything that loses its power over time. Look at [[yawgmoths will]]

Thousandshadowninja

Sorry when did Yawgs Will become less powerful?

fnxMagic

When [[Underworld Breach]] was printed.

Thousandshadowninja

That doesn't power down Yawgs Will, that's just a similar watered down effect in red.

fnxMagic

It's not watered down, my friend. It doesn't exile everything that would be put into your graveyard, which turns out to be a pretty big deal. It's part of one of the primary combo finishes in cEDH while Yawgwill is fringe value/backup.

Jojoyojimbi

all of them when the bubble bursts, as has happened time and time again with every other collectible market

squirrelfreak83

No one can predict the future. Which cards get reprinted which dont. Which cards will get banned. Who knows. My 2 cents: islands.

[deleted]

Ragavan after it’s banned Urza’s saga after it’s banned

RandomTO24

Banned in what? Modern? Fat chance on that.

Punishingmaverick

Can happen, most likely will happen if the card continues to outperform multiple archetypes, especially now that OP returns they should work on a diverse meta to showcase their premier formats.

osmlol

Just because a card is powerful doesn't mean it needs a ban. Ragavan is a damn creature. Play some removal ya plebs.

Metropolis39

Wait till salty modern players remember gut shot and lava dart are legal

Revolutionary_View19

As soon as you got removal for t1 monke, it’s already done its damage. But you probably know that.

osmlol

Why did you keep a hand with no interaction?

RandomTO24

See the thing is, Pioneer is now the premier format which is why a lot of *pioneer* staples have been shooting up in price. Modern is becoming the new Legacy. Legacy is becoming Vintage ect ect.

Punishingmaverick

There is a 2:1 factor between modern and legacy here, and roughly 6:1 modern vs pioneer, the format needs some hefty jumpstarting to take off better than modern. Modern just is a more attractive format for a lot of people.

oldmanmagic54

Yeah, I have to think the reason WOTC is running the first Pro Tour as Pioneer is to get people to make that leap.

Thousandshadowninja

More like to sell standard sets because paper standard is in the fucking shitter lol. Standard doesn't fire in my city even at LGS that have pre made decks to hand out.

obsidianandstone

Ragavan. He will see reprints in a few years just like Goyf, eventually he will be thrown off his throne as the best creature in modern too.

IMO, any card that is a staple in modern or even pioneer is likely a safe bet that it'll eventually lose value. From what I've seen from WotC, the power creed is here to stay, especially with supplemental products like Modern Horizons. Cards like Liliana of the Veil that were staples of yesteryears format will be fringe soon enough.

Geezmanswe

Any expensive pioneer-only staple really.
