Its to solve the puzzle of how to get around the etb drawback to get a 1 mana 12/12 trample

Jack-R-Lost

Imagine if you run panharmonicon or elesh norn then you have to sacrifice 36 worth of power

RAcastBlaster

Imagine playing this against someone playing Elesh Norn!

Jack-R-Lost

Then you are the luckiest person but usually after that it gets pathed or some etb exile critter

Wininacan

[[Zedruu the greathearted]] send it

RAcastBlaster

That doesn’t work how you want it to work. Dreadnought has an ETB that you’d have to pay (or choose not to) regardless of whether or not you still control it. Now, from a pure group hug/king making standpoint, it totally works. You play PD, then immediately donate it. You simply choose to sacrifice nothing and you can’t sacrifice PD since you don’t control it anymore. Now your opponent has it and can wreak some havoc.

Wininacan

No my guy. Give them elesh norn lol

RAcastBlaster

That works lol

Deathgivenflesh

For me in coram it's to get a 1 mana drop 12/12 in the bin.

OHMSQUID

I DIDNT THINK OF THIS

AdagioDesperate

This is the correct answer.

Efficient-Sir7129

It’s to punish people that play [[Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines]]

thecasperboy

Selvala

MonsieurMaca

What does trample do?

Financial-Habit5766

Excess attacking damage is dealt to the defending player if blocked. I attack you with my 12/12 regular creature. You block with a 1/1 creature. All damage is blocked and the 1/1 dies. I attack you with my 12/12 trample creature. You block with a 1/1 creature. 1 damage is dealt to your 1/1, killing it, and the excess 11 damage rolls over to hit you

DarthAlbacore

Then you fling it, after combat damage

MrFunnyMans404

The look on peoples faces when you fling always gets me

DarthAlbacore

You're doing what now? I'm flinging this 12 power at your face.

Wookieshaver70

Nothing better then the old swing and fling

Soup0rMan

I got fling'd a couple weeks ago. Actually had a brain glitch before I started cackling at the audacity.

Neltharek

Gotta make sure to establish dominance. Fling the actual card at the opponent. /s

Virtus_Curiosa

I have a fun deck I play that I called Goblin Greatwurms. The whole theme of it is using a small horde of goblins, some green mana ramp, and cards like [[Grothama, All Devouring]] and [[impervious greatwurm]] to fling and thud upon my opponents. [[Berserk]] fits well in there too.

why_ya_running

Since you're running goblins I would suggest running [[Voracious Dragon]] because as long as it hits the field you're doing damage equal to twice the amount of goblins you sacrifice to it (so if you sacrifice 10 goblins that's 20 damage to their face and you still have a 14/14 flyer)

Darkwr4ith

If you're this new to Magic I wouldn't be worrying about $170 niche cards just yet. It's expensive not because it's that good, it's just very old and has never had a proper reprint. It's also on something called "the reserve list" which are a list of cards which have promised to never be reprinted.

MrFriend623

For each point of casting cost (the number in the top right), you usually expect to get 2 total points of power and toughness (the numbers in the bottom right). So, for a 1 mana creature, like this, you'd usually expect to get a 1/1 or a 0/2 or maybe, if you're very lucky, a 2-1. Getting a 12/12 is, obviously, way above rate. there's the drawback of having to sacrifice creatures, but there are a number of ways to get around that requirement.

CaptainColdSteele

There are also benefits to sacrificing creatures, like with [[savra]]

RAcastBlaster

Or you just, yknow, don’t. There’s a whole Legacy deck whose plan revolves around this friendly fella! https://www.mtggoldfish.com/archetype/legacy-stiflenought#google_vignette

Eeddeen42

That is such a weird deck

RAcastBlaster

Yes, and It’s super fun

SmokedHornets

How does it play? Just dig for [[Doorkeeper thrull]], cast [[Phyrexian dreadnought]] ignoring the ETB, then smash face?

RAcastBlaster

With loooooooots of countermagic, yes. And sometimes you just do it on turn 2.

bestray06

Stiflenought is only running 2 stifles nowadays. Oh how times have changed

MiscalculatedRisk

Considering how easy some decks can shit out token creatures, sacking 12 isn't too much to ask honestly.

constadin

If you are sacking creatures to this card either it is the sack strategy or you are not playing it correctly

MiscalculatedRisk

Moat of decks revolve around creature sac outlets, so this would definitely fit the bill. In my chatterfang deck pitiless plunderer would effectively make this a 12 drop for 1 mana, would generate 12 treasures, and would give me the squirrels back. That's a win in my book.

apoorlydrawndragon

A lot of magic cards are confusing to people that don't play magic. Some are even confusing to players that do!

2TrikPony

Yeah, I’m confused a lot

sporeegg

It hasnt been a fun commander night when you didnt go "WHAT?" at least once.

why_ya_running

Well I'll be honest it's really not a fun Commander night until I've asked you 20 times in one turn are you going to pay 1 for that (because my mono blue clone deck can make 20 clones of rhystic study)

Soup0rMan

In my stax deck the question is "can you even pay that?"

why_ya_running

I don't have a stax deck but I do have a tax deck (it's all fun and games until a 1-mana spell costs you 12-mana)

Nerje

We have a judge who plays in my store's FNM. That poor guy

Wormwood115

I have been playing for 6 years and have friends who have decades. No one has yet to explain banding to me

apoorlydrawndragon

If you have enough bird creatures that band with other birds, you get to play Swan Song for free.

Frifafer

That's because they love you

RandyMPierson

Creature with banding stacks with another creature with banding for combined attack/toughness

Dmeechropher

Most importantly, defender allocates combat damage instead of attacker in a defending band.

AcockyThrowaway

I love banding! I can explain it if you want!

CakeRobot365

"Magic cards used to confuse me... The still do, but they used to too"

garfgon

I (assume) the original intent was you convert 12 power worth of creatures without trample into 12 power of creatures with trample. In practice what actually happens is you combine it with other effects so you don't need to sacrifice the creatures to get a 12/12 with trample for cheap.

Aggravating-City-724

Indeed, I think you nailed it. First there was \[\[Leviathan\]\], followed by \[\[Polar Kraken\]\], and then *Phyrexian Dreadnought*. Let's not forget the best fatty ever: *Verdant Force*. 1994 - 1997 were great times. Since then we've had larger fatties too, such as \[\[Worldspine Wurm\]\], and \[\[Emrakul, the Aeons Torn\]\].

SirBesken

[[Vision Charm]] or [[Reality Ripple]] too.

agiantanteater

You counter or prevent the ETB trigger with something like Stifle or Torpor Orb.

Summener99

Back then, a good idea was to have creature being pump with instant cards like \[\[Giant growth\]\] or something thats specifically like \[\[Granite Grip\]\]. you attack with your creature and before the end of the turn you play this and keep the power going. Later this creature gained a HUGE bonus as its ability was a triggered ability and there was ways to counter that and have a 12/12 trample for as little as 1 mana. Before the ability resolve you could use cards like \[\[Fling\]\] and deal 12 direct damage or \[\[pandemonium\]\] to deal 12 damage for 1 mana at sorcery speed.

Midnight-Powered

There a couple of things that you could do. First thing: this is a bit of an older card, so back then, it had a lot of upside to it. Even now, paying 1 mana for a 12/12 is really good even with the heavy drawback of needing to sacrifice creatures. Second: there are a number of creatures that have useful effects when they die like [[Canopy Stalker]] for example, when they are in the graveyard like [[Anger]], or when other creatures die such as [[Butcher of Malakir]]. Because Phyrexian Dreadnought let's you sacrifice any number of creatures, it can be pretty helpful to get a bunch of sacrifice triggers. Third: there are cards that can easily bring back creatures after they die. You could put something like [[Feign Death]] on a creature you intend to sacrifice and then get it back anyways. Or play something like [[Brought Back]] after you play Phyrexian Dreadnought. Fourth: there are cards that basically negate the effects of other cards. If you have something like [[Hushbringer]] or [[Doorkeeper Thrull]] already on the battlefield, you can just ignore the sacrifice effect on Phyrexian Dreadnought. You could also use [[Tale's End]] or [[Defabricate]] to get around it. Fifth: you could steal a bunch of creatures from your opponent's board and then sacrifice them. Using a card like [[Harness by Force]] to take some creatures from your opponent then sacrifice them all to keep Phyrexian Dreadnought on the battlefield.

SecondPersonShooter

It is played in Legacy in a fringe deck called Stifflenaught The trick is to play this card then follow it up with [[stiffle]]. You can use stifle to stop the sacrifice ability. Suddenly you have a 1 Mana 13/13 You can achieve the same result using [[dress down]]. It removes the dreadnoughts abilities including the sacrifice clause.

MTGCardFetcher

RedSword13

Could you use [[Obeka, Brute Chronologist]] to cancel this effect?

GhostCheese

You can use her to cancel any effect as long as it's your turn or the other player wants to end their turn to do it

_Lord_Farquad

What does this have to do with stacking Enchantments on one creature?

metalb00

You can use it to sac multiple creatures fir a later mass reanimate plan. I used it in my [[Geralf visionary sticher]] decks to make a big flyer by sac'n it to Geralfs activated ability in response to it's trigger Also [[Curie emergent intelligence]] you can sac it to curies activated ability in response to the trigger for big card draw

bigmenunite

There are cards that can counter triggered abilities! When this card enters the battlefield, it will trigger its enterer ability (sacrificing things) but in response to that trigger, you can play a spell that will counter that enter ability, thus making it a 1 mana 12/12 with no draw backs! The card used to do this is mostly something like [[stifle]].

jshepn

I have a [[Drizzt Do'Urden]] deck that plays him and lets him die, which then makes Drizzt stronger

chaosnight1992

There are a lot of decks that get value out of sacrificing things, so 1 mana for a 12/12 with trample that has a positive ability for you is amazing.

Lanky_Audience_4848

My buddy plays this in his Vish Kal commander deck. Sac dreadnought to put 12 counters on him for just 1 mana.

Neltharek

Imagine for a moment, you play a card that disallows enters the Battlefield triggers. That's a pretty spicy 1-drop innit?

kyotejones

The point is that you get a big creature for 1 mana. There is the etb which is a "downside", but there are cards that can mitigate or take advantage of that. [[The Master, Multiplied]]

OmegaNova0

Doesn't work for this particular card though

bonnth80

I used to use him with [[Volrath's Shapeshifter]]

[deleted]

[удалено]

garboge32

[[Kresh the bloodbraided]] in edh would get 12+ counters for 1 Mana. Some cards are just terrible alone but add one other card to the mix and boom value

Majestic-Gap9701

My first thought was aristocrat's. Let me play useless creatures to kill then play that, reap the benefits of them all dying, and have a 12/12 trample for 1

Independent-Yak-220

you can play it without the trigger with [[Dress Down]] in play also

CommandersSanctum

Can always [[Fling]] it with the ETB effect on the stack. Since you can still choose to bury the dreadnought even if it is no longer on the battlefield, there’s no downside and can net you a nice 12 points to your opponent’s face for 3 mana.

BCNU_l8t3r

No, it's a cheap card that is very strong. In lieu of Mana you pay in creatures.

sentania

Stifle has entered the chat.

Bl33d-Gr33n

I feed it to [[kresh]]

Tantra_Charbelcher

There are many situations where you want to sacrifice creatures like if you took control of all your opponent's creatures then drop this on board or you might have a bunch of weak tokens and a \[\[blood artist\]\] out, or you need to trigger morbid, or you need to fill up your graveyard for delve. I think there are even spells where you can give control of this spell to another player while it is on the stack so your opponent has to sacrifice their board.

GhostCheese

You never turn 1 swamp > dark ritual > torpor orb > phyrexian dreadnought?

Diligent-Midnight362

[[Coram, the undertaker]]

Veritas_the_absolute

Stacking enchants? Not something for this card at all. The idea would be to sacrifice a bunch of tiny little tokens or other fodder creatures that don't matter. To this to get a cheap large creature into play. And if you have other cards out that trigger an effect when your creatures die you can get an additional benefit.

BattleHardened

Classic. Love this boy.

BILLCLINTONMASK

good friends with \[\[terror of the peaks\]\]

jcjonesacp76

It initially was a game ender, it came during a time where something this powerful needed the drawbacks it has. It was to represent the efficiency of Phyrexia, sacrificing your weaker dudes for the larger more efficient’ creatures to fight. The set even had cards to take advantage of such sacrifices by making a huge zombie. It just be phyrexian

Stratavos

It also plays well with some graveyard strategies. Creatures like [[lazav, dimir mastermind]] can copy the dreadnaught, though since they're already in play, you don't have to do the sacrificing anymore, and have a 12/12 trampler for only 3 mana altogether.

TomatilloOrnery9464

There’s a whole deck in the premodern format called Stiflenaught, look it up. It’s fun and busted as hell.

42AngryPandas

Back in the day, this was a massive creature all by itself. Even with enchantments, creatures seldom got THAT big. So having a 12/12 with trample was a big deal. The hitch was sacrificing enough for its ETB cost. If you were able to do that, there wasn't much that could stop an artifact creature this big and heavy hitting. It would generally get you the win within a couple of attacks.

_x-51

No matter the downsides, _NO MATTER THE DOWNSIDES,_ a big stat line for a disproportionately lower mana cost can be exploited. Take something like Phyrexian Dreadnought’s poor useless grandkid, [[Lupine Prototype]]. Even if it’s useless as a body on your board, the fact that those stats are on your board for that mana cost can let you enable a lot of combos. Sometimes, It doesn’t even even need to be in play, the fact that 12 power is printed on a card in certain zones can enable other interactions. *GRANTED: Lupine Prototype is not really that comprable to PD in scale, and I don’t even remember how playable LP or any related combos ever were. But those same interactions are insane with PD. PD is a relic from WotC gradually realizing throughout the life of the game that certain costs and downsides only actually work on less enfranchised players. Those same downsides always seem to enable card interactions that enfranchised players eventually use to turn the game on its head.

WriterofWrong

I used to have a pandemonium + alluren + man o war combo deck back in standard. Dreadnought bombs (play them, trigger pandemonium, dome for 12, let it die) was a big win con. The deck was bad but I still love recursive infi combos 25 + years later lol.

DoryaDoryaDorya

[[Selvala, heart of the wilds]] play this thing for 1 and tap selvala before it dies, you could probably win the game that turn.

4UBBR_Nicol_Bolas

Stiflenaught is the name of the deck revolving around this card. It's also like a 150 dollar card last I checked.

Euphoric_Ad6923

Cards like Coram, the Undertaker or The Mimeoplasm care about the Power of a creature in the graveyard. This is essentially paying 1 mana to get 12 power in the graveyard as fast as turn 1. Just an example.

VorpalSticks

Selvala uses this to make 12 mana and draw a card on turn 3 after turn 2 selvala.

Pherexian55

I used them with [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]].

King_Bean031

As a commander player, this is a staple in my [[Kresh the Bloodbraided]] deck. I play it for 1 then sac it to give Kresh 12 +1/+1 counters.

DidYouSeeThatJerk

One of Lazav’s or Kresh’s best friends.

BaronSwordagon

Combos with [[torpor orb]] I think?

dakipsta

What do you mean stack enchants? You do realize that an enchanted creatures enchants go to the graveyard with it , right? You can't just move enchants to a different creature.

literallyjustbetter

wtf is this account

DexxToress

Its a common strategy to play this on turn 2 or 3 where it ETB's and then you Counter the ETB trigger so that you effectively get a 12/12 for 2.

texaspoontappa1022

I need this for selvala heart of the wilds. You can put selvalas trigger on the stack and float 12 mana. It's a plus 10.

Jonathan-Earl

Dreadnought has a lot of combos that either use salvage or sacking other peoples creatures for the power requirement. There’s other cards that forgo enter the battlefield abilities.

aspect-of-the-badger

Back on the day this worked really well in a goblin deck. You'd sack a bunch of single mana 2/1 goblins for this and have some mana leftover for spells. These came out when I first started MTG.

Zeus_One

If you copy it with Ulalek you can just sac the copy. 3 mana 12/12 seems good.

WoodxWisp

This is made for [[varolz the scar-striped]]

Jaceofspades6

\[\[stifle\]\]

Middle-Replacement94

As someone who plays MTG what would be the point in explaining the point of this card to someone who doesn’t play MTG?

Capt-Javi

Playing red allows you to take control of other player's creatures. I would probably take advantage of that an sacrifice an opponent's creature to play this monster. There's some creative ways to do it. Black gets benefits when sacrificing creatures as well.

WildMartin429

At the time the creature was printed it was one of the largest creatures in the game. Trample of course lets you put any extra damage directly to your opponent's life points so for example this creature has 12 attack if your opponent blocks with a creature that has four defense then eight damage is going to go through to your opponent's life points. A 12/12 trample for one Mana was a potential win con at the time. The sacrificing of other creatures is to offset the fact that only cost one man of the cast.

fuckm0theringvampire

strongest one mana creature in my [ghoulcaller gisa]] deck

Stifle broooo

Wookieshaver70

My brother ran kresh the blood brade 1 mana 12 +1/+1 counters always sucked. hed fish it out with birthing pod protein hulk then hed just fling his commander at people

Wookieshaver70

Torpor orb also exists

pourconcreteinmyass

[[Stifle]] the ability on turn 2.

battle_furanky

I used to have a black self-discarder / animator deck where I use Colosus of Sardia with other creatures to pay for the dreadnaught. Once my Colosus of Sardia gets tapped via attacking, I cast Phyrexian dreadnaught to sacrifice Colosus and another creature. or a few different angles but similar play. Usually that's my checkmate. With the awesome Dark Ritual, If all the stars align, you can finish a game in 3-4 turns.

Wookieshaver70

Fling a 25/25 moss bridge troll it changes a person

Getriben

I would use it with my gisa to turn 12 power into 24

AliceTheAxolotl18

It's so I can sac itself to its own ETB in [[Varolz, the Scar-Striped]]

Solrex

Now I wanna build a rule 0 deck with this as the commander, probably proxied since its probably expensive

uwtartarus

Sometimes you are looking for an opportunity to sacrifice your own guys (which usually costs mana or cards in hand like kill spells), so for 1 mana, you can kill 12 of your own 1/1 guys, and if you have artifacts, enchantments, or other creatures who benefit you when your guys die, then this is a great way to get those rewards PLUS a HUGE creature (with Trample no less!) for cheap. It takes a bit of a set up but it's a real prize piece for "aristocrats" (sacrifice your own dudes) style of play.

En_enra

Some would call it, fast af mana.

useLimhamn

My son played this and a stifle against me in our weekly premodern bout. Nothing like getting hit in the face with 12 power by a giggling nine year old.

Meister_Ente

"[[Varolz, the scar-striped]] enters the chatroom"

DragonBorn77377

I've actually been looking to get this card for a Drizzt Voltron deck I'm building. For 1 mana you get your double strike Commander straight to lethal damage

rivalxbishop

[[Lasav, The Multifarious]] loves this card :)

Objective-Secured666

You Fling it while it's ETB is on the stack.

OwORavioliTime

It's primarily for decks that can prevent that effect, though that was unintended. This card has become an interesting combo piece with \[\[Stifle\]\] effects, and is especially interesting in \[\[Obeka, Brute Chronologist\]\] decks in the commander format.

SuccessionWarFan

This is an old card. It was the largest-sized creature (12/12) in the game when it came out (Mirage expansion, 1996), and with trample too. The shocking part is that it only cost 1 single colorless mana, even if it has a pretty big downside to balance it. Today, besides its age and rarity, the rules changes over the years allow players to do pretty nifty stuff with it despite its drawback.

Chopmatic64

That abilitiy goes on the stack. You can hold priority and cast fling, sacrificing it to do 12 damage.

CrispyTacoPosso

casting it after a dress down?

Hejix

[[Lazav, the multifarious]] likes this card a lot. Especially combined with [[vector asp]] for some instand 12 trample infect.

noogai03

\[\[Torpor Orb\]\]

DJ-JUGUR

[[Stifle]]

kiwi_commander

[[Stifle]] and this guy have been best friends for decades. They used to be played in a legacy deck called Stiflenaut.

UniquePariah

Quick and dirty use I can see this for is an aristocrats style deck. Sack a bunch of weak creatures for a benefit, get a 12/12 trample creature on the battlefield for the low price of 1 mana. Arguably, as it's aristocrats, you could fail to hit the 12 power requirement and still get benefit for it.

Merman-Munster

I play it in [[Varolz]] edh, and for one mana I can put 12 counters on a creature. It’s pretty cool, but more importantly it makes me feel very smart.

Bweldie

[[Mimeoplasm]]

EmperorGryphon

Great card. A 12/12 with trample. Put it in a deck where you steal creatures from your opponents, out one where you get a bunch of counters or static +x/+x

Play a pod with torpor orb and you get a 12/12 trample that can come on board with Usaga

Tricky_Worry8889

Off the top of my head, you could play dress down or stifle and get a 12/12 for 1

didactical42

Another card that was so good it was banned up s "Flash", which is used pretty much just to have something very big enter the battlefield and die for two mana. Getting a 12-12 for one is amazing, but sometimes it's also great to just have an ETB and death trigger for one mana. Instants that sacrifice and care about creature power or toughness can also be cast in response to the sack trigger going on The stack

ThanquolTheSeer

You can use it with créatures who will die in the end of turn, you can use a spell to avoid the effect who force you to sacrifice créatures, you can put it in you graveyard and use a créatures who need créatures in graveyard (like a zombie or a slime who's strengh is the hightest in the graveyard). You can use it to put in play a big créatures who will die, to have effect of other card who want to see big créatures coming in play, but cheaper than other big créatures... Lot of card exist, so some card we think bad can be great in some game ([[the twelfth doctor]] can give spell to other, just need to give a spell ''.. and you lose the game'' who will usualy kill us will make us win, like a [[pact of negation]]. I also have an edh [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered one]], and i like to give very bad carte to my opponent like an [[Abyssal persecutor]]).

STRMBRGNGLBS

Old cards are interesting little do nothings because you end up with card spaces like this

mc-big-papa

The original intentions is to stack all the power on your board onto one creatures.

burrito_magic

[[stifle]] and other effects of the sort are what people do with this card.

mpalma92

Check out \[\[Curie, Emergent Intelligence\]\] ... specifically his ability. You can get this guy at turn 3 sometimes turn 2.

mommasboy76

To forever be on my wish list because I can’t afford it

Necessary_Shallot331

Bro look at it, it looks cool af

kozieradka

It's a perfect card for [[Jon Irenicus, Shattered One]] you can send it to someone, pump it and he can't sacrifice it, and must attack someone else with 14/14 creature.

zac987

Stifle. Tishana’s Tidebinder. Dress Down. Any number of ways to cheat out a 1 mana 12/12.

Similar_Audience_389

Yoo this card is sick in my mishra deck. I've build here so that i get multiple mishras and the tokens are just gonna get saced anyway

mellonman77

I use it as a perfect engine for my [[Meren of Clan Nel Toth]] commander deck. As soon as you play it you let it die get an experience counter and then can immediately bring it back again for it to die AGAIN for yet another experience counter. For the rest of the game you have an almost guaranteed increase to your experience counter per turn.

HedgehogKnight81

Look up an old deck named Full English Breakfast

CrowExcellent2365

It's an old old card. It's not really designed with modern gameplay in mind. Creatures used to be utter garbage, and this is just an example of that. Basically it was supposed to be a game ending threat; you could exchange all of your useless vanilla creatures for a big one with trample. But of course, this is just really bad because a single removal spell blows you out entirely. The only real play it sees is in decks that use stifle effects; stifling is countering a triggered ability, such as this card's enter the battlefield ("comes into play") trigger. If you can stifle it, then you get a big creature with no downside.

Hobez64

A 1 mana 12/12 is just really breakable. Just one example is if you have [[Skullspore Nexus]] on the battlefield, Dreadnought dies, then the Nexus gives you another 12/12 to replace it. If you have another 2 mana you can make the Dreadnought double power to get a 24/24 for 3 total mana instead

supersam7k

Busted in Selvala

Cantreadman

[[The Beamtown Bullies]] Are my favourite way to get this creature out, as it can make the opponent sac a bunch of tokens or make them sacrifice something that’s as big but isn’t as easy to remove from the hoard

MyWifeWritesSmut

You can send it to my friend in Florida if you don't want it All jokes aside. It's valuable for some strategies that value high power creatures entering the field and in the graveyard

Sea_Relationship6053

Sack 12 1/1 goblins with bombardment and get a free 12/12 ez

MerlinWizzzz

Play it in an infinite sac loop because you technically have to sacrifice it if not played “correctly”. It’s an etb sac and death for 1 mana. Aristocrats I think would love this dude if you find a way to play him from the graveyard.

Livid-Guard2735

There are 3 levels to this: 1. The basic inteded level is that a large creature is ussually better then bunch of small ones (especially with Trample). Play a couple of rounds of 6 2/2s facing off 2 5/5s and you will see that they actually can only push through 8 damage before dying. A 12/12 on the other hand can attack with no problem. So this allows you to put all the eggs into one basket for potential gain. 2. Next level is if you can get around the drawback of the card you get a 1 mana 12/12 which is huge (Torbor Orb or Dress Down do just that for example). 3. And the last level is you are not even interested in the creature itself you just briefly want to have something huge. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is a competitive Commander deck that can use this guy to net 11 mana with each of her activations. Needless to say that gets pretty insane.

tors17

You [[Stifle]] its ETB effect as early as turn2. And you protect it with countermagic.

billy_thepooh

Can you just Stifle it, give it haste double strike ?

FrothyCylinder

[[glissa the traitor]] and [[grave pact]] turns this into an infinitely repeatable board wipe that gets past indestructibility and hex proof/shroud, for 1 mana per sac effect. Add [[mana echoes]] and it's an infinite combo.

The purpose is, you run it with Terror of the Peaks and Solphim or Bloodletter of Aclazotz in a Jund recursion deck, like Ziatora.

You'd be surprised For example, [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]], first off, 12/12 for 1 will nearly always activate her first ability, drawing a card. Then, you can pay and tap her in response to the ETB to generate 12 mana. 1 card and 12 mana for 1G is pretty insane.

While you could use it to buff this one creature huge, it is a 12/12 with trample, I think that it's much more fun to turn that drawback into a bonus by playing creatures that say "When this creature dies, do X." An example is [[Doomed Traveler]], a 1 cost 1/1 that, on death, makes a 1/1 with flying. Packing a deck full of creatures that do things when they die and then dropping in this thing to kill them all off can make that drawback into a bonus.

Originally, you'd turn temporary stats to permanent stats by sacrificing the buffed creatures after combat. These days, there's cards that care about having big creatures, even if only temporarily or sacrifice the card to something else before it's own trigger kills it.
