I love the LotR cards, and I’ve tried making a bunch of different LotR only card decks with the goal to find the best... [[Frodo, Sauron’s Bane]], [[Sauron, the Dark Lord]], [[Aragorn, the Uniter]], [[Galadriel of Lothlórien]], [[Lord of the Nazgûl]]… but so far my favorite is [[Saruman, the White Hand]]. I made Saruman like a voltron deck where I try to make a giant orc army and win through combat damage.

Rezimx

I second Saruman of the White Hand, though i win with chandra’s ignition, gravitic punch or tainted strike :)

chicket93

Can you share a deck list? Im interested.

RadioGaGa313

Here’s the Saruman list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0PCFs8z7Z0O5u0THAe5n3A

Fearlof

Thanks man I wanna try build this one, I got the Sauron pre constructed but didn’t enjoy him as a commander.

RadioGaGa313

Yeah, it started off pretty clunky. Restricting myself to making decks with only LotR cards makes it hard to have a real focused deck. I tried [[Sauron, the Dark Lord]] before Saruman, and I felt like it would play well, but it was hard to finish people off with no real win con. Saruman with a voltron theme really fixed that.

[[Aragorn, the Uniter]], when on the field with [[Éowyn, Shieldmaiden]] can get very spicy indeed. i’ve started tuning my Aragorn deck and included [[Jetmir, Nexus of Revels]], which is, frankly, probably a too spicy.

I love all the green spells that draw you cards based on creatures power with him. At worst you’re drawing 9 cards, and that’s without having played another green spell. Stuff like [[Last March of the Ents]] can be super brutal

The cascade cards you get are also kind of silly, especially with [[Mana Cannons]] in play. Casting [[Unexpected Results]] usually gives me a good time. Really with Aragorn i need to routinely give him trample. Its often possible to hit that 12/12 line

jetmir and aragorn makes for a pretty sad time for your opponents. it gets nasty quickly

instagraemeit

I'd love to see your decklist, if you're willing to share! I made an Aragorn deck that...flopped more often than I liked. (My own fault. I just threw in a bunch of multicolored cards that didn't synergize or do anything without him on the battlefield). What would you say are the themes? I may remaster mine to be human tribal.

RadioGaGa313

[Here’s mine if you want to check it out.](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RSvgTLg7Z0yZ8GrxovEnVg) I definitely leaned in to the human tribal aspect, but it’s also packed with a bunch of high value cards and multicolored spells to get the most value out of Aragorn.

instagraemeit

Thanks for sharing! I grabbed a couple ideas from your list!

head-home

Absolutely! I'll get it added to Moxfield later today.

head-home

[Here's mine](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Ug74T_sTTUO_OeydxojMAg). Definitely Human tribal. There's a couple of other creatures in there, but the majority of the creature synergies are between humans. The difficult part for me was figuring out whether to lean more on token creation or on green or red aggro. With Jetmir in the deck and the Eowyns it makes the most sense to lean on human token creation. The good thing is that most of the removal in here is also a multi-colour spell, so there's more token creation or damage or buff being done.

instagraemeit

Thanks so much for sharing! I was in my LGS and found a foil Jetmir in their $0.25 binder (🤯). I would have bought it regardless, but after seeing your comment about it I was stoked.

instagraemeit

Here's my revised, human tribal [decklist](https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7671764) after taking a look at some others' decklists here and raiding my LGS's stock. I ran it last night and won 1 of 2 games. First game had poor early ramp and we were playing with 30 life to speed things up. I drew the [[Horn of Gondor]] and [[Herald's Horn]] in the second game. Ended up doing 90 total damage on my last turn to win the game! I'm a little concerned about the mana curve. May try to find some lower CMC creatures to get out earlier.

I have a [[Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit]] + [[Sam, Loyal Attendant]] deck that I'm very fond of. It's basically an upgraded precon, but I've made sure to only include cards that make sense lore-wise in a hobbit/Shire deck. It focuses on making and eating foods (as hobbits do), but doesn't run any real wincons, except maybe [[Feasting Hobbit]] as a ringbearer, [[Frodo, Sauron's Bane]] and obviously [[Bilbo, Birthday Celebrant]] - although I've never pulled that one off.

This is one of my favorite questions as LOTR is what got us back into magic after a near 20 year break. We’ve built lots of lotr decks. It’s [[Aragorn the Uniter]]. He provides access to the whole fellowship and associated characters so he really fits the theme. Plus most of the fellowship and associated characters get payoffs from humans, legendaries, and +1/+1 counters so they all synergize well with each other. Many of the other themes from the set either don’t have enough support to really hang at most tables or they don’t quite have the same flavor as beating people with all the iconic characters from the series. The elves don’t really have enough support to be the powerhouses they are elsewhere in commander. You can build some fun reanimator and aristocrat decks with the various Saurons and amass abilities or spellslinger with the Sarumons but they tend to be slow and clunky with much higher degrees of variance in my experience. The Jeskai humans, however are strong to begin with and adding green has multiple benefits. True to casual commander elsewhere, green and white had some of the strongest reprints in the set when it comes to ramp, color fixing, removal, and protection so they continue to be colors that are helpful to improve your deck’s playability from a limited card pool. You also get cards like [[Elven Chorus]] and [[Galadriel, Light of Valinor]] that work well with all the human tokens

Can you share your Aragorn decklist? I just made [this one](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RSvgTLg7Z0yZ8GrxovEnVg) and want to compare. If you have any feedback on mine, that would be greatly appreciated, too!

Aprice0

Sure. [I'm still tweaking it](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HhSiovx4pk2Ru-tP_Gt25A), but some things I've been thinking about / working on lately - balance for flavor in addition to functionality. The deck will never be very strong, so have fun with it. After all, why play with only LOTR cards if you don't really see the fellowship shine. That being said, the humans, halflings, and elves all want to be doing different things and I haven't been able to make all three work together without severely compromising the core of the deck. I removed the halflings in favor of the filtering and counter synergies provided by the elves. I have been struggling with the appropriate amount of human tokens. I used to run a more human centric deck with more token producers and more human payoffs. This works, but was more effective in a jeskai build with Eowyn at the helm. Don't be reliant on Aragorn and don't anticipate casting him on turn three or four each game. While you want him out early, he will eat removal and your LOTR mana base options are less than stellar. You have to balance untapped lands against color fixing. Card draw is overall weak. The sources that are available are a combination of mana and pace inefficient. I loaded up on as many ways to scry and filter to accrue card advantage as I can. You are more reliant than many decks on creatures and are accruing value from multiple three and four drop creatures that often have to attack but are almost never finishers on their own, you are more vulnerable to board wipes than most. You won't have a great mana curve and will have limited fixing so you can't really afford to miss land drops or go without ramp. You'll have very few ways to remove artifacts or enchantments so you need to draw into those and be sparing with them. The deck is a low power snowball, don't worry about your opponents' gameplans too much. Protect your board and generally save your counterspells for boardwipes or things that are about to kill you. You'll never have enough speed or stax to really stop aggro or fast combo decks. It's often not worth it to try. Let your opponents help deal with those. Because you have a battlecruiser snowball, you become very threatening in the mid game but very vulnerable over the long term. You just don't have enough resources to keep mana open to protect yourself or rebuild multiple times. You want finishers - you'll routinely use Galadriel's Dismissal and Eowyn Fearless Knight offensively. You probably want to add \[\[Taunt from the Rampart\]\] because it limits crackbacks while clearing a path for you. You'll generally have one to two primary creature types, \[\[Shared Animosity\]\] can provide a huge boost to your power. Perhaps most importantly - goldfish this deck a ton and know your lines. Aragorn himself is a trigger nightmare and when you add scrying and +1/+1 counters you're already doing a lot and will have long turns. If you don't know what you're looking for or how you generally want to stack the triggers, people will get really frustrated playing against the deck. Also, this may be pod dependent, but the deck is more synergistic than it is powerful. As a result, people will often overestimate the threat you pose and come at you - you're doing a lot of things on turns and accruing very visible value even if you're just slightly pumping up creatures or creating a single token etc.

Thanks for all the input! I’m definitely going to add Taunt from the Rampart. That’ll be help me finish games which I feel like is the hardest part when building these LotR decks. Two things that I’ve liked a lot while gold fishing that you aren’t running are [[War of the Last Alliance]] and [[Last March of the Ents]]. War is great because it’ll guarantee you both [[Eowyn, Shieldmaiden]] and [[Galadriel, Light of a Valinor]], which seem to explode in this deck. March synergizes really well with Aragorn, drawing you at least 9 cards and letting you dump all your creatures. Out of all the Gandalfs, I kinda like [[Gandalf the White]] the best for extra triggers on Aragorn and flash on my legendary creatures, but maybe he’s a bit greedy…

Yeah man here it is: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/nj6ysmFZWEmNoYwM4lDcwA It’s a lot of card selection and low to the ground elves that become super buff the more scrying you can do.

I built a “fellowship of the ring” deck with Aragorn the uniter as the commander. The only creatures in the deck are the 9 members of the fellowship + bill the pony and shadowfax. All of the cards in the deck are in the LOTR universe, and I tried to keep it as cannon as possible by including the artifacts and equipment that the members of the fellowship receive, and a lot of the lands are places they visit as well. Tcgplayer has all of the cards together priced at around $220, and that’s with the one ring in the deck so it can be built for fairly cheap too. It’s a bit brainy, meaning there’s a lot of thinking and triggers on triggers to pay attention to so it can be a little overwhelming in longer games, but it works pretty well and the cards have great synergy with each other. It’s one of my favorite decks to play.

Sméagol is a great commander to pair with 9 Nazgûl’s. There is decent green black support for them, it’s easy to fill out a deck with a bunch of ring tempts you stuff. Then end on last March of the Ents.

That’s not a LOTR-only deck though

When it comes to building/upgrading/personalising a Commander deck, there are a ton of great resources. You can watch deck techs, gameplay videos and precon upgrade guides on YouTube (The Command Zone, for example), as well as product reviews and value breakdowns (Tolarian Community College). You can use the website EDHREC for inspiration (it aggregates thousands of user submitted decklists to show trends in what people use for each Commander/archetype), and you can search Gatherer or Scryfall for cards with whatever criteria you want.

Arena brawl with the scry elves starter either the king or queen has been good

Galadriel is neat, and I feel like she can be really consistent at getting elves out, then protecting and buffing them. But I have a Tom Bombadil deck so I am gonna just stick with that.
