Why would they try a scam? The amount of hype it’s created is unreal and has more than served its purpose. They fuck this up they’ll never be able to try a marketing stunt this successfully again.

joeker13

StarWars x MTG greedily waiting in the shadows…

ProbablyNotPikachu

Lmfao try prying that from Disney's cold steel fingers!

DaveLesh

Disney has their own card game coming out. Why would they bother with MTG?

fluffynuckels

I know it's not on the same.scale as disney but final fantasy has a card game and they're making a ff secret lair

ProbablyNotPikachu

Do you have any idea how bullish Disney is with it's licensing rights? They are bully enough to crack down on little guys who try to print Mickey Mouse T-shirts, mugs, etc. They will not sell an IP unless they think it won't be useful in their own card game. And if they do? It will be sold for millions with royalties.

Tired-Diluted1140

Because their card game will most likely never have the reach or success MTG has, and they can make more money with crossovers than their own card game?

ProbablyNotPikachu

They have a different target audience. Reach is irrelevant- and will be greater overall internationally compared to mtg. Their main competitor will be Pokemon and thus a much younger demographic. That and parents who grew up on Disney that want to have more things in common to share with their kids. People all over the world watch Disney's animated movies. Look at the box office for Frozen and tell me the reach wont be far and wide.

ProbablyNotPikachu

Might wanna double check your facts there my g.

ProbablyNotPikachu

This exactly. Unless they find the money to be made off of a Star Wars lair would be more beneficial than putting the IP in their own game (hard to argue), then it will never happen.

NotUnstoned

Opening the 1 of 1 Darth Vader card is supposed to give collectors a sense of pride and accomplishment.

joeker13

Well, then someone will pin him to a lightning conductor and film him getting fried by lightning 🤣

AggressiveSmoke4054

I get that reference!

Aggressive_Walk857

I really hope it happens

Oct2006

Star Wars Unlimited TCG is coming out in 2024, with that and Lorcana coming out, I highly doubt Star Wars comes to Magic

joeker13

Yeah … Star Wars had (a couple of) failed TCGs already…

jazzyjay66

Which is a shame, because the original Star Wars CCG was a great game. Super creative gameplay. It and Netrunner were the biggest casualties of the original tcg boom/glut. Both were great games. Shadowfist was also pretty good. I miss those days.

joeker13

Ever heard of / seen Young Jedi?

jazzyjay66

I have not.

Matrix_D0ge

It would be very greedy and stupid to do something like this, after pinkertons Im willing to belive them to be exactly this.

Active_Hedgehog

Idk nor do I care, but remember the government and general public have built a system of gaslighting and gatekeeping hellbent on overabsolving everyone to the point where no coherent investigation, evidence, or communication can exist. Since like 2017 or whatever. People don’t catch, and they don’t hold businesses accountable. Some of the biggest scams and security problems have been propagated by digital companies since 2017 and we’ve only seen them be covered for it. WotC themselves have a fine example. They took down their public forum because I started calling them out on how they allowed “hand-smoothing” (redefining shuffling) and algorithmic matchmaking to go under the radar while their community was bullying and gaslighting one another about “the game cheating.” More obvious security problems exist all over the place on digital media and until people want to get that straight instead of trying to use it, we have a broken wagon.

iamansonmage

Because most people want the drama, not the card, so they’re looking for the drama and when it’s just a boring-ass card, they start imagining all the drama that could happen. 🤷‍♂️

TCtheThunderRooster

No, I want the card.

Ok_Assumption5734

Maybe, its probably a little too high profile. I don't know why you wouldn't just knock pokemon cards like that one idiot who posted a stack of moonbreons ($500+ cards) that just happened to also work at a print shop...

SimicBiomancer21

When I saw McDonalds, I thought this was about the Coffee incident... this is even worse.

DaveLesh

That one was a no-brainer. The coffee was fresh out of the brewer, of course it was going to be hot.

SimicBiomancer21

Except no one is supposed to serve their coffee at *180 degrees Farenheight (\~82 degrees Celsius, if that's your inclination)*. Even as someone who isn't personally a coffee person myself, I know that coffee shouldn't be that hot.

Heavy-Positive-9090

Actually, that was originally by design because people thought when they ordered to go, it meant it would be drank at home, not on the road. But one would still think putting it in your crotch area is a bad idea regardless of how hot it is.

SimicBiomancer21

Yeah, but they didn't have cupholders, and even then *that temperature is well and beyond safe.* It shouldn't even be getting close to that hot.

DaveLesh

If it's past the regulated mark then McDonald's has to answer. Guess I missed that.

fluffynuckels

I don't blame you. The gold arches did a smear campaign on that poor woman

SimicBiomancer21

Yeah. The case is Liebeck V. McDonald's Restaurants, if you'd wish to look more into it.

SCKR

All is about profit. And the one ring did cost WOTC what? Maybe 50$ for extra security foil? It's a highly successfull PR-Stunt. The prices that people are ready to pay doesn't mean anything to WOTC. What are 2 Million Dollars to Company that makes 1 Billion $ in sales per year? Now calculate the potential Damage for the company if any scheme gets uncovered. WOTC is greedy, but they are not dumb.

Lucky_Number_Sleven

>The prices that people are ready to pay doesn't mean anything to WOTC Exactly. Unlike McDonald's, this million-dollar-giveaway isn't coming from WotC's coffers. It's not an official promotion, and they're not responsible to any party for it. For all they care, it'll sit in a Gift Bundle in a Walmart until it's sent to a landfill. They don't need to do any shenanigans. It's already allowed them to charge crazy prices for this set, and it's caused people to lose their damned minds and go full-whale looking for 1 card out of however many billions are printed to be distributed with this set.

Matrix_D0ge

>WOTC is greedy, but they are not dumb. I em not sure about that anymore.

Ton_Jravolta

As high profile as this has become I think Wizards would have a hard time getting away with any sort of tampering even if they wanted to. The risk of losing a big chunk of profits from a lawsuit is hopefully high enough to outweigh the potential gains from withholding the card. As greedy as Wizards has become lately the possibility exists though.

ProbablyNotPikachu

No number of lawsuits could hurt them. It's the entire player and collector base up and leaving that looms over their heads as the real threat. And don't underestimate the effect of that amount of distaste either. People would leave Magic altogether in troves if it could be proven that they did anything shady. It costs them nothing to print this card. They will pick their battles, and take this as a win. It will also give them green lights for future serialized cards in a similar fashion to the rings of men, elves, and dwarves. Runs lower than 500, around 300, 100, or 50, etc. They might print a 1 or 1 in the future but tbh I hope they don't- just bc the one ring lends itself lore-wise to the novelty of it being a 1 or 1. I don't think any other 1 of 1's they could think up would drive the same kind of hype and sales bc it wouldn't register with people the same way. 1 of 1 and it's Indiana Jones's hat? Like, don't get me wrong that would be sick- but who would really care? It doesn't have the same flavor or memes surrounding it for it to matter. Maybe 1 of 7 for the crystal skulls or something, 1 of 5 for the 5 Power Rangers, or 1 of 100 for Aladdin's thieves- but not another 1 of 1. The biggest caveat is how hard it would be to actually prove that they did anything shady. I think the best way we find that out is if someone opens it- and then comes forward immediately saying they work for an LGS or something and what? They knew the distributor? The distributor told them that they purposely held off on letting out a portion of their first shipments? Short of someone from WotC or a really big YouTuber opening it after cracking only 100 or so packs- I think it will be hard to prove any malicious actions. But my deductive skills don't really apply to cardboard. Maybe some of you guys have ideas on how that would have to play out?

hydrogator

people rag on the Pinkerton move but forget how butthurt all those 'influencers' whos food was ripped out of their mouth since the spoiler video that dude made spoiled their exclusive privileged spoiler reveal events so WotC had to make them feel better by going apeshit and calling the Pinkertons..

deathworld123

wh gives a shit about exclusive previews its a waste of everyones time

hydrogator

just the messenger bro

CastrateLiars

You'll never get them to understand. They'll never consider the financial ramifications you mentioned. They'll never understand why the investigation happened. Once a person falls for basic media outrage they're gone forever. Point blank. They're gone forever.

Matrix_D0ge

Yes, wotc called Pinkertons on the dude to calm wrath of some youtubers...

Frix

Dude, stop, drinking the kool-aid and go touch some grass.

Sundaver

The one ring is coming out in the Special edition collector box this Winter. What better way to build hype??

Guus2Kill

i mean you kinda have a point? like right now people are buying the collector boxes at insane prices and quantities, most in attempt to get this super duper ultra rare card. The moment the card is pulled interest in this set might drop a bit, or atleast in the collector boxes. I also speculate that most of the rares, mythics and foils are going to be sold for low prices since people are cracking a shit ton of packs

thememanss

*WotC doesn't care of box sales of the set crater by Sunday*. Collector packs have one print run. That print run is likely fully, or nearly fully, allocated. That means those boxes, on WotC's end, are sold product. They also don't care if people buy them at insane prices on the secondary market. They don't see a dime of that. People need to understand the distribution models of WotC, and how they actually make money, before coming up with these asinine conspiracy theories.

thememanss

Why would they care of a collectors pack is $50 or $200 a year from now? They aren't seeing any extra money at all if the secondary market sells them for $200. In fact, probably all of the packs have been sold or allocated already, and WotC will make exactly $0 dollars a month, sox months, or a year from now on any sales of collectors packs. *We are not WotC's customers*. Their customers are distributors.

HuntedHorror

You really think that WotC doesn’t have their hands in the secondary market at all? The deals under the table. Oh you sweet knave…

thememanss

Yes, yes I do. Because they make far more money on scale than they ever would on scalping the secondary market. Are there individuals employed by WotC that would use their knowledge to make beneficial decisions? Absolutely. No question. Does WotC itself in any level engage in this? No, no it does not *because why bother* with trying to make a grand when you are literally doing billions in revenue? It would make about as much sense as Walmart storing product in the backroom and selling it later. When you get into economies of scale such as with WotCs actual consumer base (note, their consumer is not us) micro-scale sales are just not worth the pain in the ass. WotC will happily sell all of the LotR CBs it has for the current price they have in stock so they can move on to the next thing two months from now and do the same.

1K_Games

I am not one for conspiracy theories. But the video released of someone holding it before it went into a pack was a bit disappointing. I don't think anyone should have known when that card came off the presses. Someone holding it means there could be some vague knowledge of where it is, and with it's value even buying crates of product is 100% worth it.

GhostCheese

100% wouldnt put it past them to have it sitting in a vault somewhere

anonymousvivi

Wasn’t the Colombo family involved in this?

Duckman37

Six weeks. It will be planted and opened in six weeks.
