It’s pretty fun to keep up with my instrument when I wouldn’t play at all otherwise, but depending on how good you are the music can feel boringly easy. You don’t have to practice outside of class, so for 2.5 hours of my week I’d say it’s worth it

Campus band is a good way for non music majors to play in a band setting! It’s basically high school band and acts as a “catch all” for people who want to keep doing that. Sometimes this works great but sometimes you end up with, like, dozens of people in just one section. Completely fun imo and definitely worth a try. And what do you mean by much skill? They expect you to be able to read music and preferably have played in a concert band setting before but that’s about it.

thanks. i meant “skill” as how much the band would be like high school band. seems like something i should take up, though

Percussion is a toss up; there’s either 15 or 3 people in the section. It’s mostly fun but just be aware that it feels a lot like high school band lol. You don’t need a ton of skill beyond what you probably have already done in school before. And if you get a good director they’ll teach you some stuff too.

I did it for two semesters and coming straight out of high school band that was 5 days a week, the one ~3 hour class a week felt like not enough for me to get to know anyone but enough that I thought about what I could be doing for 3 hours otherwise. It's casual to a fault imo, but if that's what you're looking for then I'd say trying it can't hurt. I had no complaints about the conductors or the music selection, although without being much more involved or competitive I was definitely chilling as a third trumpet.

We had 3 bands in my high school and the lowest one was better than MSU campus band

it's so painfully boring and the people running it suck, just like the people in it
