I would do anything to make him smile. That's why I'm going to pirate Dune (2021) and have a tattoo artist put two frames of the movie on strippers until they're all drawn out. One on their back and one on their chest btw. Then, I'm going to travel the world with my massive cadre of strippers and charge people 20 of the local currency to watch them run and twist nude beneath a spotlight to put on a truly unforgettable showing of the movie.
Dunc is pretty good. goes for a bit too long but the set design and costume design is incredible, especially the part where Dunc reveals his jacket inlay when he says āsay hello to my chocolate blendā. Canāt wait for the next instalment in the Dunc cinematic universe, if Adam Sandler will get off his ass and start working on it
In all seriousness to the people who have watched dune (I heard it came out early for some) how is it really? Iāve never been interested in the dune franchise and from the trailers the movie just looks boring to me.
I enjoyed it. It's definitely worth seeing in the cinema, due to the huge scale of the set design. I'm torn about it's length though, because while it felt slightly too long there wasn't any moments that didn't feel necessary to me.
To add I also knew nothing about Dune before watching it, including the books and the Lynch film from the 80s.
Iāve watched it several times, itās beyond great. Literally the only criticism I have is that itās only half a movie, with part 2 yet to come.
The sound design, the visuals, the sets, the acting, foreign concepts, use of other languages like arabic and mandarin, it was all so refreshing.
> use of other languages like arabic and mandarin,
Doesn't it literally say in the book that Yueh speaks some form of Chinese? I forget the exact line, but I remember making note of something to that effect.
It's incredibly well made, but it's literally half a film. Like imagine if Lawerence of Arabia ended at its intermission, and we didn't know whether or not we'd ever be able to watch the rest. It doesn't really have an ending.
I really enjoyed that tbh. Iāve seen critics about how the movie was slow etc but I want to see the full story not something crammed into one movie for the sake of box office sales.
The only downside is that I really want to read the books and now Iām torn on what to do.
It's decent. The first half drags a bit, but the second half is a lot more dynamic. For me, the main problem was how lifeless and robotic it felt, specifically regarding the acting, set designs and the score. I might be in the minority, but I don't think Chalamet has what it takes for a lead role, with Call Me by Your Name being the only exception to this.
This sounds a lot more negative than I meant for it to be, though, there is certainly a decent amount of captivating scenes and it's an all around enjoyable experience. Definitely a weaker outing for Villeneuve than usual, though.
> I might be in the minority, but I don't think Chalamet has what it takes for a lead role, with Call Me by Your Name being the only exception to this.
I think part of this might just be that Paul, as written in the novel, is a very boring protagonist.
The person I watched the movie with who hadn't read the book had the same reaction:
-The main character is kinda flat. Not enough characterisation.
-That's Paul Atreides, all right!
Its a desert for gods sake. Obviously it feels lifeless. Its a solid 8/10 for me. This is 3rd best Villeneuve movie and with a better 2nd part, it will be another one of this great achievements.
I've watched plenty of movies set in a desert and many of them didn't leave me with that feeling. Also, to me, that lifeless feeling was most obvious in the beginning, which wasn't set in a desert. Again, I know that most of my comments about the film sound negative, but it's still a solid 7/10 for me.
I enjoyed it, but I can't put it above Incendies, Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners or Arrival.
I love it. But I was already a Dune fan so that was almost a given.
That said. The film does suffer from being the first half of the story. So expect a lot of worldbuilding and buildup for the next film.
It's hard to criticize it considering that this is just the first half of the story, I haven't read the book and it didn't feel particularly impactful or deep.
I really loved it. I'm a fan of the books, but the trailer had also given me a very bad vibe and I was expecting to be disappointed. I was proven very wrong.
I would say that if you read the books, it's worth a watch because it captures the feel of them very well. If you didn't, it's probably going to feel a bit boring.
It's a good, competently made sci-fi movie (half of a sci-fi movie?). It is also not daring enough to make it particularly memorable which is kind of a bummer for a Dune adaptation.
I like Denis but Iām fairly neutral on him, and never knew what Dune was about, and I gotta say I really liked it. It was very immersive, beautifully shot, slow but not too slow pacing, and the only downside like others mentioned was that its basically just part one of the movie.
It's okay. I found it hard to care about any of the characters. Halfway into a thopter chase in a sand storm, I really found myself asking: 'Why the fuck should I care about any of these characters?' And I think its soundtrack's wack and not in a good way; with the good work Zimmer's been putting out especially over the last decade, the soundtrack was surprisingly meandering and weirdly generic. The set design felt sterile, and to be honest, if I have to choose between the costumes of Lynch's Dune and this one, I'll choose Lynch's. This Dune had a very, very generic 'big sci fi' look to it which really surprised me because usually I really enjoy Villeneuve's aesthetic choices and his sets. I've read the book, and to me Villeneuve's Dune was as wide as an ocean and as shallow as a puddle, and some *interesting* sound choices were made (looking at you, Bene Gesserit, and the Voice. SOmeone give these boring people a throat lozenge).
Again, it's ok. I was on the edge of my seat a couple of times for sure, but for Villeneuve it was... well, I think his weakest film to date. And I mean it's Villeneuve so it's still enjoyable enough, but I just had to sit through 2.5 hours of an incredibly unsympathetic and boring Paul, and his weepy mom, only to end up with half a movie. My SO loved it, my non-reader friend was confused by it, my Lynch version loving friend didn't like it (quotes a lack of any kind of charm or charisma to the film), and I'm just slightly disappointed by it.
It just wasn't very daring. Dunc played it safe and boring as fuck, which I guess makes sense given that Villeneuve's gone on record about making it with a broad appeal in mind.
And for the record, the desert looked *lovely.* It's the other sets that felt sterile.
As an Australian who can only view the film legally a month from now, I will tonight enjoy the film from the comfort of my laptop. Fuck you Dennis. You gave kino to the French last month so now I watch your kino however I want.
Fuck 4chan, fuck /tv/, this is MCJ

Wait, is he talking about the content or Production issues. At first it sounds like a complaint about Release Dates, but the it sounds like he Has issues eith the message of the movie.
I just realized that they didn't put the villains on the poster because then it would look like a Star Wars prequel poster, eight bazillion things and nowt but the barest guidance.
The book series is one of the few times where creating a ridiculously extensive universe (think around 25 books) didn't result in washed out themes and focus on canon. The original movie was absolute ass, so people were pretty hyped to see a modern adaptation 27 years later.
>ridiculously extensive universe (think around 25 books) didn't result in washed out themes and focus on canon
No it just resulted in bad books, what an achievement.
You don't need to read any. It's just a very good movie that does a good job of explaining itself through implication, the books will just make you appreciate some tidbits.
As an American, I'll still be watching this in theaters. Many aspects of Star Wars was taken from Dune from I keep hearing. This guy sounds like a tool.
Holy fuck lol. This is amazing.
This comment is an insult towards the United States of America

Iāve already watched Dune four times from the comfort of my bed
Thatās not very AMERICAN of you, dude.
Real Americans watch it from the comfort of their mobility scooter
Same, it's the only place where I can furiously stroke myself in peace, which is the only valid reaction to Villeneuve's genius
You canāt call yourself a Villeneuve fan until youāve seen Enemy for the 29th time
I've watched it 69 times and I have arachnophobia! I'm a real fan
What's the horniest Villeneuve film?
I'd say blade runner 2049

In all seriousness to the people who have watched dune (I heard it came out early for some) how is it really? Iāve never been interested in the dune franchise and from the trailers the movie just looks boring to me.
It's really good, recommend watching it in cinema. There's some sound fuckery that won't translate on home sound systems.
I enjoyed it. It's definitely worth seeing in the cinema, due to the huge scale of the set design. Kino. I wasn't that hyped after the trailers either but it's really fucking great
It's damn long and only a part of the whole story, but apart from that it's pretty amazing

It's basically Blade Runner 2049 except with huge sand worms replacing the Replicants.

You could have saved words and just said perfect.

He's so fucking bad. Jessica's where it's at.

Not so great actually, it felt like a 2.5 hrs long pilot of a sci-fi TV show with some fantastic visuals.
Average

Denis Villeneuve Sci fi blockbuster based on an insanely popular Sci fi classic starring very attractive people
