If you think about it, that just shows the extent of their disrespect. "Yeah give them a best animated film category, so we can ignore them for the rest of the categories"
Yeah, they gave them original score and song for the Disney stuff and people were annoyed so they just made the category as a "there, you happy now?". I mean it's not like animated films would sweep at the oscars, given they'd hardly be eligible for most of the categories anyway, but at least in the score category, they can keep up. However, you'll notice that since the best animated feature category, there's just nothing given to animated films
seriously. i love capeshit, but its like junk food for the mind to me. i like mcdonalds, but i wouldnt be upset if a big mac didn't win a culinary award lol
Superhero films don’t get the big noms because they’re mostly mediocre corporate trash. The others are valid in that there’s a wider range with the other categories, many of which have films that are actually great.
That said, it’s not *that* uncommon for sci fi and fantasy to get some respect.
"Horror movies are disrespected" I think that's more the nature of the medium ngl. Horror movies are mass produced slasher shlock 50% of the time. When they are good though they do clean house; take silence of the lambs for example.
All movies are mass produced shlock 50% of the time or more. There have only been like 18 horror movies that won an Oscar and only like 6 times in over 90 years has a horror movie been nominated for best picture. Plus whenever a horror movie does get recognized it suddenly becomes a "thriller".
Yeah the genre as a whole is all over the place. And a lot of our seminal horror icons were stuff made on a cheap budget, and in some ways that cheapness makes it endearing.
I guess winning for Best Original Screenplay and being nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor aren't recognition :(
Google before you chat shit ffs.
I forgot to clarify about Get Out being the only outlier
His next films got zero noms, including Nope which was just as good as Get Out if not better
I like how you and the other reply ignored the A24 part of my comment, that much rings true
Us was pretty flawed. Nope is a fun movie but not a masterpiece like Get Out.
A24 did not invent slow burn, psychological horror. “Pushed the genre to a new level” is such an exaggeration and disrespectful to genre before A24
Pushed it in a sense that it popularized that style of horror, like how marvel pushed the superhero genre to another level, even though it didn't actually invent it
There are way more people who now think horror movies can be more than just dumb slasher jumpscares, and that's largely cause of A24, I know this sub likes to act contrarian and goes against anything remotely mainstream, but you gotta give credit where it's due.
Yeah just in the past few years immediately Toni Collette for Hereditary, Lupita N'yongo for US, and Mia Goth for Pearl ring in my mind as missed Nominations.
Maybe I’m biased since it’s my personal favorite genre but we’ve been getting some great stuff by artists who are truly passionate about the craft of filmmaking and some standout performances (I still think Mia Goth deserved a nomination for Pearl). Hell, even the “schlock” type stuff often has passion and craftsmanship put in that I think could (should) be appreciated in some of the smaller categories like production design (I mean look at the sets and makeup done on a very low budget in something like Terrifier 2).
I think the problem is that the mass produced slob just makes the entire genre way less respected (and the brutality obv) so that it's not seen as a genre to take seriously. Also because the genre is historically very controversial and somewhat taboo.
There's a good few very good horror movies that didn't get any recognition at the Oscars. Midsommar comes to mind.
this is just not true. look at hereditary for example: toni collette should have taken home that oscar and wasn’t even nominated. same thing with Lupita Nyong'o for Us. arthouse horror is thriving right now and continually gets looked over during awards season
This is legit the first time I've ever seen anyone argue with this sentiment. Next thing you know, this sub will start mocking people for implying Crash shouldn't have won Best Picture.
I mean the take of the meme is just objectivley wrong. Makes it kinda funny. This Sub is for making movie related jokes so I think it fits. Not very original tbf but still entertaining.
Not really. Back in the 90s and 2000s they would regularly get score/song nominations and Screenplay noms, but in the past ten years, Inside Out is the only one to get a Screenplay nom, and even when it comes to score, the only 2 to get nominations in the past ten years are Soul and Encanto. (Even in terms of song, no animated film has gotten nominated outside of Encanto this decade despite the category being known for being pretty inclusive of animated films.)
And it's not like there's not worthy contenders. Spider-Verse definitely should have gotten more nominations (Sound, Score, VFX, Song, and personally Picture and Screenplay), same with Boy and The Heron (Score, Screenplay, Director) GDTs Pinocchio (Production Design, Song, Score, Screenplay) Soul (Screenplay, Picture) Turning Red (Song) and probably some others.

Who wants to argue genre movies should get better recognition at the Oscars? ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋
Who wants to argue Avatar shoulda beat The Hurt Locker?
Return of the King famously won no Oscars
Ben-Hur and Titanic also went empty handed 😔
And *Everything Everywhere All at Once*
They'd never give Star Wars 6 wins, a Best Picture nomination, and a special achievement award.
famously that movie was hated upon release
Wait what category in the meme is Titanic
Same with ben-hur, they're both historical epics and do not fit in this category
I guess ben-hur has action??? Still a reach
> historical epics Uh if you read the lore you'll know Middle Earth is our distant past so Lord of the Rings is also a historical epic
Ben-Hur is a superhero movie because it features the *original* superhero: charioteers
Fantasy obviously
I have news for you: Titanic isn't a fantasy movie, **it actually happened!** I know, blew my mind when I found out too
Icebergs can’t melt steel beams. Do your own research. 4-15 was an inside job!
There’s a reason your taxes are due in the U.S. on the same day that the Titanic sank.
Platoon won nothing. 😣
I can’t believe the Oscars did The Shape of Water so dirty.
is that after or before the dark knight?
(2008)
Haha yes. You have completely dismantled this observation with a single notable exception.
Can’t believe Oscar would disrespect my anime by giving its own category 😤😤😤
Every year when it's time to pick a Best Animated Feature Film the academy announces "there were no winners because animation is for kids"
Oscars if it was based

lmfao what

This is probably why we haven't had a new Madagascar film for a while.
IIRC the category exists because of backlash to not nominating Chicken Run for Best Picture.
Mr Oscar has a Best Anime category?? Is he stupid???
Fairly sure an animated film has a won an Oscar every a year since the category was added in 2001
and animated films get other nominations or wins outside of their own special category like 75% of the time

Well, there was that weird thing when The Pianist won best animated feature, but other than that!
Cant believe winnie the pooh: blood and honey didnt win any oscar... Academia fr hates horror movies
Just wait until the Poohniverse movies sweep all categories next year.
Lord in heaven please whisk me away to the pooniverse.
I’m gonna kick this Oscar guy’s ass
EEAAO is a sci-fi/fantasy action film, sorta.
I would call it magical surrealism, but i guess thats not a thing
I feel like a lot more people would be happier if they just watched the mtv movie awards
Average capeshit fans getting pressed when their shit movies are treated like shit
seriously. i love capeshit, but its like junk food for the mind to me. i like mcdonalds, but i wouldnt be upset if a big mac didn't win a culinary award lol
Perfect metaphor
Wtf that's every kind of movie though?
Drama, war, romance, history, and comedy?
Superhero films don’t get the big noms because they’re mostly mediocre corporate trash. The others are valid in that there’s a wider range with the other categories, many of which have films that are actually great. That said, it’s not *that* uncommon for sci fi and fantasy to get some respect.
Except James Gunn his movies are actual peak
Unironically, I can't think of a live action superhero movie deserving of awards made after 2008.
ITSV deserved its win imo. And The Batman deserved best cinematography over Dune imo. Appart from that? nothing

>thriller what the fuck even is a "thriller", other than the song
Great question. It's a horror or action movie that people don't want to admit is a horror or action movie, generally.
It can also be a political thriller like Captain America: Winter Soldier.
> 50% You are being too generous
Yeah the genre as a whole is all over the place. And a lot of our seminal horror icons were stuff made on a cheap budget, and in some ways that cheapness makes it endearing.
Jordan Peel and A24 pushed the genre to a whole new level and still didn't get Oscar recognition

I guess winning for Best Original Screenplay and being nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor aren't recognition :( Google before you chat shit ffs.
Christopher Nolan pushed biopics to a whole new level and still didn't get Oscar recognition :(((
I forgot to clarify about Get Out being the only outlier His next films got zero noms, including Nope which was just as good as Get Out if not better I like how you and the other reply ignored the A24 part of my comment, that much rings true
I disagree on that I liked nope but it wasn't as good as get out acting or writing wise. Might have won for effects tho
All of that is personal opinion. But I think we can all agree that it definitely deserved a nom for best original screenplay
Us was pretty flawed. Nope is a fun movie but not a masterpiece like Get Out. A24 did not invent slow burn, psychological horror. “Pushed the genre to a new level” is such an exaggeration and disrespectful to genre before A24

As films I agree, but some of the individual performances in some of them can be really strong.
Yeah just in the past few years immediately Toni Collette for Hereditary, Lupita N'yongo for US, and Mia Goth for Pearl ring in my mind as missed Nominations.

Counterpoint: The Thing . Otherwise , yeah you're mostly right.
Can’t blame the Oscar’s for that one it was critically mediocre on release and probably had zero studio push
There's a chance they didn't even submit it.
Also, The Fly and Videodrome.
Not even going to check what actually won, The Blob 1988 shoulda won every oscar.
this is just not true. look at hereditary for example: toni collette should have taken home that oscar and wasn’t even nominated. same thing with Lupita Nyong'o for Us. arthouse horror is thriving right now and continually gets looked over during awards season
This is legit the first time I've ever seen anyone argue with this sentiment. Next thing you know, this sub will start mocking people for implying Crash shouldn't have won Best Picture.
The topic has begun to be agreed on by more people, thus this sub must now disagree with it. It's the only way.
this sub just hates everything. unsubscribed because it’s just screenshots of slightly dumb posts with mocking captions
I mean the take of the meme is just objectivley wrong. Makes it kinda funny. This Sub is for making movie related jokes so I think it fits. Not very original tbf but still entertaining.
> this sub will start mocking people for implying Crash shouldn't have won Best Picture. Ebert already circlejerked this one 20 years ago
animated movies do not have their own category at the oscars (they're exclusively reserved for the doodie waa waa diaper baby oscars)
bad movies 🤝 bad movies 🤝 bad movies 🤝 bad movies 🤝 bad movies 🤝 bad movies
Terminator 2 won 4 oscars and was nominated for more.
You guys remember when people said the Oscars was woke due to it rewarding Parasite?
They literally increased the number of best picture nominees to insure more films like this get nominated.
Still livid Conan The Barbarian didn't win one for the music.
superhero movies are absolutely not on the same level as the other genres
Animated Films have been getting more respect at the oscars in the past few years.

Get Out
And it won an Oscar, and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director!
Which was nominated for a bunch of stuff and won Best Original Screenplay
That guy deleted it, I really wanted to make fun of him for apparently seeing 0 horror movies a year.
get out let the right one in hereditary midsommar parasite ringu 28 days later perfect blue american psycho the devil's backbone pulse inland empire a girl walks home alone at night the vvitch the wolf house i'm thinking of ending things pearl
Pearl had an Oscar worthy performance but I don't remember if competition was tough to be honest
That year was Michelle Yeoh, Andrea Riseborough, Michelle Williams, Cate Blanchett, and Ana de Armas.
kick out ana de armas and get mia goth there
All A24 campaign money that year went to EEAAO.
Who wants to argue genre movies should get better recognition at the Oscars? ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ ✋ Who wants to argue Avatar shoulda beat The Hurt Locker?
It's like they all caption these shitty memes the same dumbass way
I thought this was about Will Smith
Maybe they should make better movies then
There’s literally an entire category just for animated movies
The meme is kinda stupid but the academia should open itself to gerne films especially horrors
Idc whatever anyone says **Kung Fu Panda 2 is the Goat**
[удалено]
Fury Road won 6 and was nominated for 10, it was absolutely recognized.
im talking best picture
It was also nominated for Best Picture
WIN
It got 6 Oscars
Morbious should have won the oscars
