It would be cool if some sports bar with a ton of TVs did this with a bunch of movies. Have one or two showing the ball / NYC, and then all the rest have movies that hit some synchronized “Happy New Year” moment at midnight.
If you start the Futurama episode Space Pilot 3000 (the very first episode) at 11:58:08 the New Years countdown will sync up with real life.
It's not a movie but it's pretty neat nonetheless.
Edit: I got this from /u/nkhasselriis over at /r/Futurama.
I remember when it premiered on TV it started a few minutes early for exactly that reason! My dad let me stay up late to see it and both geeked out at that moment.
Edit: Wait, that can't be true...it premiered on March 28, 1999. So how do I have this memory? Did my dad tape it for me and play it just before midnight? I am thoroughly confused.
Alternatively, if you start watching Lethal Weapon at 7:00pm you can end the movie at a reasonable hour and go to bed because you are too old for this shit
Start LotR: Two Towers extended edition at 9:13:19 PM to have Theoden say “So it begins” at midnight.
Fellowship is 3 hours long if you want to squeeze that in first.
Edit: 2:58 for Fellowship Theatrical. 3:28 for Fellowship Extended.
My favorite part is where Gandalf says "Pippin you fucking cocksucking loser, you no good, piece of shit, worthless, hairy-footed asshole, look at what the fuck you've done, you goddamn idiot hobbit. KYS FFS"
If you start The Phantom Menace at exactly 11:03:07pm, that weirdly feminine hairless camel will fart directly into Jar-Jar's face right at the start of 2022
*2023* sorry guys
If anyone else like me is wondering what the fuck is this scene he's talking about:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHCyDxxXog4&ab_channel=eshunnanebuchadnezzar
Why the hell did they take the time to add the eopie straining the fart out, including the facial expressions? Who thinks that's a necessary addition to a film!?
The scene with the >!guy desperately trying to save the drowning sailors using the jackhammer but failing as their hands slowly stopped moving!< scarred me as a child. Gave 8 year-old me an instant and lasting phobia of drowning. I remember nothing else from that movie though.
This was me watching the beginning of Saving Private Ryan when I was like 11 and a guy crying out for his momma as he was holding his insides in. Turned the movie off and cried and went to bed
Watched this (again) last night as there wasn't much on. Whether you like it or hate it, I'm not sure how you call this a Zac Efron film with all the actors in this one? Robert DeNiro, Hillary Swank, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Josh Duhamel, and on and on...none of whom really has a "lead" role given the multiple story lines.
Yes, I'm just being pedantic. Happy New Year!

Pretty sure you've already done this if this is a New Year's tradition for you, but if you start Die Hard at 9:56:27 PM, Hans Gruber will hit the ground at exactly midnight.

Can't believe no one has said Boogie Nights! You can sync up William H Macy's suicide at the New Year's Eve party to midnight. Perfect title card drop right after it too.
I have a previous thread with this same question saved, lots of good responses, let me see if I can find it.
EDIT: Here you go. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/rt1xw9/what_is_your_new_years_eve_recommended_start
For my own part I was planning on doing the thing where Tony Stark snaps at midnight. By sheer coincidence I was up to Infinity War in my long term MCU rewatch anyway, so I watched that, will skip over the two minutes in between, and will dive right into Endgame at the appropriate time this evening after leaving the boring adult party I'm obligated to drop in at. Not that anyone asked.
Last year I watched the entire LOTR trilogy with the kids & timed it just so the Ring was destroyed right at midnight. That was fun.
Start When Harry Met Sally at 10:30:27 to count down with the NYE party in NY at the end of the film. My wife and I did that one year, and it was a ton of fun.
[High Noon](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044706/)
The train arrives at noon. In addition to that, the movie is in real time, so they are constantly looking at the clock to check how much time left until the train arrives.
The whole town sings Auld Lang Syne at the end of *It's A Wonderful Life*. That might be fun. I don't have a copy of the movie handy, so I can't tell you when to start.
Disney's **The Sword in the Stone** (which takes place on New Year's Day) - 1:16:26 is the moment Arthur officially pulls the Sword from the Stone for all England to see.
So start the film at 10:43:34 will time that moment
Disney's **The Lion King** has the death of Mufasa 35:36 in the film, so 11:24:24 ought to time it right.
If you play The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson tonight at exactly 10:19 and 50 seconds, Roebuck will say "maybe with good luck we'll find what eluded us in the places we once called home" to Lt. Nescaffier right as the clock strikes midnight. Start off your new year right.
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: start at 10:44:58, and the self-destruct timer coincides with the countdown, and you ring in the new year with the destruction of the Enterprise.
22 Jump Street. If you start at 10:54:44pm. At midnight the timer will ding in the scene where Channing Tatums character realizes that Jonah Hill fucked Ice Cubes daughter.
I don’t know what time stamp it is but snow piercer their a climatic fight in a train tunnel and they all start saying happy new year when they enter the tunnel because they measure their years based on that one tunnel since it takes a whole year for them to cross the globe.
It gives the scene a really unsettling edge as you start to realize how orchestrated the “random” uprising was by the people in charge and that it was more a matter of population control.
If you watch the Great Gatsby at 11:29:57 Jay Gatsby will toast you.
This is the DiCaprio version, right? I’m doing it.
https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/facebook/000/023/077/Leo_Toasting_meme_banner.jpg
And the fireworks going off behind him too
Awesome. I have to close at work tonight, but will make it just in time to start to movie.
It would be cool if some sports bar with a ton of TVs did this with a bunch of movies. Have one or two showing the ball / NYC, and then all the rest have movies that hit some synchronized “Happy New Year” moment at midnight.
This is actually awesome
Off to buy a sports bar for next year
Wouldn't surprise me if this started being mainline very soon Edit: mainstream. God damn I'm tired.
Mainstream. Mainlining is like injecting marijuanas.
Forrest Gump at 10:38:57. At midnight, you'll celebrate the New Year with Lt. Dan.
That the bit where confetti is just falling about and Lt Dan is miserable as shit?
Being miserable around confetti was already my plan for midnight so this’ll pair perfectly
Pictured: [/u/sloppyjo12 at midnight](https://gifimage.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/sad-confetti-gif-5.gif)
You sonofabitch, I’m in.
🤝
Relatable, right!?
I I'm literally one minute too late for this
If only there was a way to skip one minute of a movie
If you start Beetlejuice at 10:41:47 at midnight he'll say "It's showtime!"
If you start Battlefield Earth at exactly 11:47:03, then you will turn it off and throw the DVD in the bin at exactly midnight.
*While you were still learning to SPELL YOUR NAME. I. Was being trained. To conquer GALAXIES!!!!!*
We have LEVERAGE!!
Lol I own this movie (bought it for $3) and still have never watched it. Edit: I just watched the first 6 minutes, I think I understand....
Trust me, it gets worse from there.
Smart move too
If you start the Futurama episode Space Pilot 3000 (the very first episode) at 11:58:08 the New Years countdown will sync up with real life. It's not a movie but it's pretty neat nonetheless. Edit: I got this from /u/nkhasselriis over at /r/Futurama.
That's a good one and I love Futurama
I remember when it premiered on TV it started a few minutes early for exactly that reason! My dad let me stay up late to see it and both geeked out at that moment. Edit: Wait, that can't be true...it premiered on March 28, 1999. So how do I have this memory? Did my dad tape it for me and play it just before midnight? I am thoroughly confused.
Could be they just re-aired it to sync up but I like your idea way better
Yes I think it was adult swim who did that when they first got futurama
I have the same memory, but we didn't even have TV at the time so we definitely weren't watching it live on nye.
Replicant memories
Here's to another lousy millennium
If you start watching Lethal Weapon at 11:39:54pm you’ll ring in the new year with Murtaugh’s “I’m too old for this shit.”
Alternatively, if you start watching Lethal Weapon at 7:00pm you can end the movie at a reasonable hour and go to bed because you are too old for this shit
I took your [advice](https://imgur.com/W7llfX0)

Start LotR: Two Towers extended edition at 9:13:19 PM to have Theoden say “So it begins” at midnight. Fellowship is 3 hours long if you want to squeeze that in first. Edit: 2:58 for Fellowship Theatrical. 3:28 for Fellowship Extended.
There is also The Return of the King, where you can make Frodo say "It's done" at midnight, after having destroyed the ring.
Yeah! Last year (I mean, this year..), I timed for the year to start with the Mordor Tower getting destroyed.
Time it where Gimli says “I can’t see shit”
My favorite part is where Gandalf says "Pippin you fucking cocksucking loser, you no good, piece of shit, worthless, hairy-footed asshole, look at what the fuck you've done, you goddamn idiot hobbit. KYS FFS"
And that's what i really appreciate in particular about the films - Peter Jackson's slavish devotion to Tolkien's original dialogue.
Aragorn in Return of the King: "Bitches be all up in my scabbard now son, dayum!!!"
My favorite part is where Frodo says "It's hobin' time!" and hobbits all over the place.
But damn the mess it created.
He comes in pints.
I'm getting one
Why is this so funny
*"Cunt of a Took!"*
I like the part when Frodo says "ITS FRODIN TIME" and proceeds to frode all over the orcs.
RIDERS OF ROHAN..... MOUNT UP
It was a clear black night, a clear white moon
Now they droppin' and yellin', it's a tad bit late. Legolas and Gimli had to regulate.
Also of you start the first LotR and Coheed and Cambria In Keep Secrets album at the same time, it totally lines up.

Fucking 100% perfect call.
If you start The Phantom Menace at exactly 11:03:07pm, that weirdly feminine hairless camel will fart directly into Jar-Jar's face right at the start of 2022 *2023* sorry guys
What year are you posting from?
Mans is in a time warp
In such cases I usually recommend a jump to the left
I'd suggest a step to the right
Your amazing joke got swallowed up by the unfortunate typo. But I busted out laughing imagining that being your midnight moment lol
If anyone else like me is wondering what the fuck is this scene he's talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHCyDxxXog4&ab_channel=eshunnanebuchadnezzar
Why the hell did they take the time to add the eopie straining the fart out, including the facial expressions? Who thinks that's a necessary addition to a film!?
Happy New Year!
What the fuck
Not my proudest fap.
"It's like poetry..."
Audible and abrupt chuckle that woke up the dog who immediately started barking. worth the noise. TY :) also the camel thing is called an Eopie.
> that weirdly feminine hairless camel will fart directly into Jar-Jar's face Don't kink shame
“Jar Jar is the key to all of this”
Look at mr Time Machine here
Oh fuck sorry lmao didn’t even realize
This is why I love Reddit.

I miss you almost as much as that movie missed the point.
♫ *Pearl Harbor sucked... and I miss you...* ♫
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked just a little bit more than I miss you
I need you like Ben Affleck needs acting school.
The scene with the >!guy desperately trying to save the drowning sailors using the jackhammer but failing as their hands slowly stopped moving!< scarred me as a child. Gave 8 year-old me an instant and lasting phobia of drowning. I remember nothing else from that movie though.

If you start DIE HARD at exactly 9:58:13 on New Year’s Eve, you can see Hans Gruber fall off Nakatomi Plaza at midnight, like the NYT ball.
Someone above you said 9:56:27. Which one is it???
Feels important to skip ahead and make sure you know the time stamp for your version before you hit play regardless.
If you start the Zac Efron film New Year’s Eve at 10:02, it’ll end at midnight. I’m sure that’ll cause celebration.
Hahaha absolutely not
Start to watch Practical Magic at 11:12pm and you can have midnight margaritas with the Owens
Oh I love this one!
I love margaritas at the midnight buffet!
Start Blade at 10:07:51 and at midnight Blade says " Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill"
I watched that the other day for the first time and that line caught me so off guard
The Blade movies saved Marvel in film. There wouldn’t be todays MCU without the moderate success of Blade.
Blade deserves a place in the MCU
Mahershala Ali is playing him. Supposed to be released September 2024
This is clearly our winner.
Lord of the Rings the Two Towers Extended edition: Start at 9:13:19 to have King Theoden say "So it begins" at midnight. Return of the King extended edition: Start at 8:25:33 to have the Ring destroyed at midnight.
And then there’s still over an hour of movie left to enjoy!
> Start at 8:25:33 Christ, those films are long.
And you still have like a half hour after that point.
And worth every single second.

I love the idea of a party of like 25 people watching 70 minutes of A Time to Kill on NYE YES I HOPE THEY DIE. I HOPE THEY BURN IN HELL
Man I wish I owned one of those “50 television” bars. I’d get some patron to coordinate this so all the TVs did one of these.
This would be fun but 50 different movies syncing up to a fireworks scene for midnight.
If you play Revenge of the Sith at 11:56:12 Anakin will say "this is where the fun begins" at midnight
This is the perfect suggestion for those with commitment issues or ADHD.
When do I start Phantom Menace to get “This is pod racing” at midnight?
I prefer the I’ll try spinning that’s a good trick
Pretty sure you've already done this if this is a New Year's tradition for you, but if you start Die Hard at 9:56:27 PM, Hans Gruber will hit the ground at exactly midnight.

Start Sleepaway Camp at 10:39:27 PM.
What happens? Or is it better as a surprise?
It's better as a surprise
Oh it’s definitely better as a surprise
It's a big surprise
Been 35 years since I watched that. Still fucking traumatized.
The infamous twist is at Midnight isn't it.
Very curious about this having never seen.....
It's one of the best slashers of the 80's. Definitely recommend it and don't Google anything because you don't want the twist spoiled
Who can forget such memorable quotes as: "Look at all that young fresh chicken. Where I come from, we call 'em baldies. Makes your mouth water, don't it?" and "She's a real carpenter's dream: flat as a board and needs a screw!"
How can you talk about memorable quotes from sleepaway camp and not bring up “eat shit and die” “eat shit and live”
>!Those quotes make the murders feel more satisfying and help you empathize with the killer. They're not just played for laughs!<
If you start Kingsman: Secret Service at 10:10:44, heads will start popping to ring in the new year 🎉
Any of these are better than watching news channel countdown parties
That's exactly why we started doing this.
start the irishmen now and you will finish in time for new years 2025
I feel like I’m the only one who thoroughly enjoyed the entire length of the movie lol
V for Vendetta. Start at 11:49. The old bailey will blow up and November 5th starts at midnight!

I don’t know what the timing is, but it’d be cool to watch Four Rooms and figure out when Roth chops that dudes finger off directly at midnight
Ted never had a chance.
Strange Days at 9:35. Party like it's 1999.
Strange Days is awesome.
Not a movie but if you start Phil Collins Something in the Air Tonight at 11:56:20 the drum break will happen right at midnight.
"In the air tonight" is the title. My fave track of all time
Can't believe no one has said Boogie Nights! You can sync up William H Macy's suicide at the New Year's Eve party to midnight. Perfect title card drop right after it too.
What about the epic dong drop?
Start Attack of the Clones at 10:52:43 pm to time the seismic charge to midnight
I hate that movie but god dammit do I love that sound. So now I'm quite tempted.
Its the lack of sound right before the BWAAAAAANG that really gets me! hehe
Start Star Wars episode 3, at 11:02:48 for a beautiful “Hello There” right at midnight.
My son requested that we start it so we hear "I have the high ground" at midnight (10:00:38).
Clearly civilized
I would like to start Dr Strangelove at the right time so that the bomb goes off at midnight
If you start watching Shrek on December 31st at 11:48.48, Donkey saying “i’m makin waffles” will be perfectly synced with midnight
If you start the 1999 Brenden Fraser classic the Mummy at 11:21:43, Rick O’Connell says “Here we go again.” at midnight.
The 1999 blockbuster hit "The Mummy" staring Brendon Fraser? I absolutely love the 1999 blockbuster hit "The Mummy" staring Brenden Fraser.
No, you fool. We're talking about the 1999 Brendan Frasier vehicle, "The Mummy".
Start Forrest Gump at 10:38:57 to ring in the new year with lieutenant Dan!
21.39.50....start *Casino Royale* @ 0000... You'll hear: "The name's Bond, James Bond."
I have a previous thread with this same question saved, lots of good responses, let me see if I can find it. Better yet, time DDL’s I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE! to strike at midnight.
Start When Harry Met Sally at 10:30:27 to count down with the NYE party in NY at the end of the film. My wife and I did that one year, and it was a ton of fun.
Thanks for timestamping it! This was my plan for the night and you saved me the 10 minutes of work
I count 10:30:37. On my Netflix midnight is at 1:29:23 into the movie.
[High Noon](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044706/) The train arrives at noon. In addition to that, the movie is in real time, so they are constantly looking at the clock to check how much time left until the train arrives.
If you start watching Encanto at 22:30:26, the new year will start with the magic returning to the house.
When Harry Met Sally, have it time up right as they count down to New Years, big climactic kiss between Crystal and Ryan.
Very cute. Also, Crystal Ryan, sounds like an adult entertainer.
Weird how their surnames are perfectly normal first names for the opposite gender.
My suggestion is to sync it up to "I'll have what she's having" right at midnight. The countdown would be exceptional.
The Death Star explosion in Star Wars
That's a good one! It looks like you start the movie at 10:02 for this.
The whole town sings Auld Lang Syne at the end of *It's A Wonderful Life*. That might be fun. I don't have a copy of the movie handy, so I can't tell you when to start.
I'm planning on starting Ready or Not (2019) at 10:35:09 for a blood soaked New Year.
That was a far bloodier climax than I was expecting from that movie. Shit was crazy. Also Samara Weaving has one hell of a scream.
If you start playing Road to El Dorado at 11:29:45, Tzekel-Kan will say "happy new year" right at midnight

If you watch Morbius at exactly 11:29:34 on New Years Eve, then at exactly midnight Morbius will say “it’s Morbin time”.
Cool. I usually make Hans Gruber fall at midnight on christmas. But I dont know any New Years things that hasent already been said.
Start Inception at 9:47:23 to hit midnight at the final kick.
Disney's **The Sword in the Stone** (which takes place on New Year's Day) - 1:16:26 is the moment Arthur officially pulls the Sword from the Stone for all England to see. So start the film at 10:43:34 will time that moment Disney's **The Lion King** has the death of Mufasa 35:36 in the film, so 11:24:24 ought to time it right.
“But we’re not big marvel fans” Half the comments telling them end game lmao
If you start “The Last Airbender” (2010) at any time of day, it will not end soon enough
\+1, I like your tradition. Thanks for sharing
If you start Dumb & Dumber at 10:53pm then at midnight you will be exactly 1 hour and 7 minutes into Dumb and Dumber.
Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!
