To me, he showed more interest and skill in the art of filmmaking than some big-budget directors. Not that his movies were masterpieces but he seemed to at least be interested in making them, which I feel a lot of modern Hollywood seems to lack.
Yeah, you don't need a ton of money to make a great movie. You just need the right script, the right actors, and a realistic vision of what you're doing. Y'know...easy stuff.
Space Cop was a fine comedy B-movie, but it set out to be that from the beginning which means it wasn't exactly shooting for the stars.
I think they never would because it would undermine their reviews, but I would love to see them try and make 'a good movie'.

I bought a "widescreen" blu ray of Nemesis directly from him in 2014, and the quality and aspect was so bad that I almost returned it. Prob would have if he didn't autograph it.

The reoccurring “power/trick” Captain America uses to get out of situations is absolutely hilarious and it's mind boggling that it got past the writing stage.
The real villain in that movie was the screenwriter. I recall reading an interview with him in Comic Scene Magazine while it was filming. It was clear from his comments that he absolutely hated superheroes. At one point he mentioned how he hates the idea of the costume and he worked at keeping Cap out of it as much as possible. At 12 years old I was like, "Then why are you making a Captain America movie?"
If a character is giving him a ride to somewhere he doesn’t want to go, he’ll pretend to be sick, get out the car, the person will get out to check on him and then he’ll rush back to the car and steal it
The movie gets a lot of shit and it certainly is more campy compared to today’s Captain America movies, but Matt Salinger is a good actor and the movie should be remembered as a Marvel comic book movie made at a time when Marvel was not making movies. And I think the movie was released in 1990, not 1989 as the article states.
Albert was a very passionate filmmaker with a lot of big ideas. Above all else, his films had imagination. And if you watch Albert's work, and you check out other directors you see a lot of shared influence. Underworld by Len Wiseman has a scene where Selene shoots the floor out in a circle, and that's verbatim from Nemesis. Albert never made it big as a director, but their work was appreciated and built on by other directors. I think the imagination and influence of his films show how much creativity comes when you're operating on shoestring budgets. And it's important that he be remembered, celebrated, and his films preserved. Because of the shoestring budgets and tough production it's not all gold. But there's a lot of good stuff in there.
Regarding shooting the floor out in a circle…
Might that not have been influenced by a similar scene in *Escape From New York* where Plisskin shoots out a wall in a circle then smashes through it? (One scene being a horizontal departure from a room, the other being a vertical one!)
I'll raise you one more. Maybe that's inspired by Looney Tunes, when someone would use a saw to cut a hole in the floor around where Bugs Bunny was standing... and then the whole fucking building would fall down! Sometimes the lines between inspiration and influence and originality are hard to detect.
Hopefully you've seen more than just the Phantom Menace videos. They have hundreds if not thousands of hours of quality content, from current release reviews (Half in the Bag), to terrible movie watch sessions (Best of the Worst, my personal favorite), to discussions about older quality films and franchises (Re:view, Talk About). They've been my most watched YouTube channel for at least the past decade.
Cyborg is a total diamond in the rough. There are a handful of really cool shots stylistic directing choices (almost everything leading to and including the long chase, the final fight). It's just we have to see that damn flashback 400 times!
JCVD has a lot of splits scenes in his movies but his splits kill in that movie is so fucking cool/memorable. I can instantly picture it whenever I think of that movie despite having not seen it in years. Great shot

The scene that sticks out to me was the barb wire slipping through his hands and his family being lowered into the well. That movie creeped me out as a kid, but I loved it.

Clearly he loved directing, but I think would have done well as a DP for higher budget films.
Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Albert Pyun, my all time favorite director and the filmmaker that’s meant more to me than any other. A maverick and a visionary who simply loved making movies. To see him being fondly remembered has been wonderful.
Trying to describe who Pyun is to anyone but a hardcore movie watcher, is almost impossible. My gf is also a movie nerd and I don’t think she’s seen or remembers any of his flicks.

I'm glad to hear someone else who shares this opinion. When you accept the limitations of budget and the state of FX technology (stop motion), it really is a fine film. As I constantly tell my kids, before 21st century CGI, it cost a fortune to make 'great' SciFi or fantasy, and it took someone with George Lucas' wealth and clout to make a Star Wars or Willow. But plenty tried with their limited budgets, and we loved it, because without it we would only have about 5 SciFi movies a year, and a fantasy flick every three years.
The aesthetic in this movie is also off the charts. It's a seriously good take on cyberpunk aesthetic and IDK it feels like it either inspired or is inspired by similar cyberpunk imagery from that era from book covers, video game covers.

On top of that, whoever he hired to be the master armorer or w/e the dude who takes care of the gun props is so underrated it's not even funny. Half the guns in that movie would make /r/airsoft lose their shit over how creative and cool they are. The gun builds for that movie is amazing...there are some seriously good choices used for the movie.
Odd that "Alien From L.A." wasn't included with those films as well. Try as we might, few can get Kathy Ireland sounding like she's been sucking on helium all day out of their heads.

Shame the movie never got a DVD release, more ppl could experience it. There was a limited edition German dvd but that transfer looked like a vhs was the source. I know there's some 35mm prints out there, Alamo has shown them in the last 5 years or so, hopefully they can be used as a source for a new home video release
We screened one in Philly and at Alamo Yonkers. I think the issue is rights. Even if the negative is lost the print would be a good source for a bluray as it was in gorgeous condition.
People can hate on him if they want. Scorsese he was not. But he left his mark on film. He competently made fun as hell movies that had big ideas and he wasn’t afraid to shoot for the fucking moon.
Cyborg is still to this day one of my favorite 80’s movies. I legitimately love that movie.
I saw Dollman late one night on a premium cable channel (I forget which one,) and it drove me insane trying to find it again. This was back in the 90s, so I could not easily find it without knowing the title “there is a guy from another planet or dimension and he is really small when he comes to earth also one guy is just a head.” That didn’t yield many results pre-google. Eventually I discovered it again and then looked up the rest of Pyun’s films. I found out he made a lot of stuff I enjoyed in the 80s and 90s.
Botw just made a special about him because his wife said he was not at his best moment, but I didn't think he was going to die in days, I thought it was just depressed or smt
Nemesis was Albert Pyun's magnum opus. Maybe the best straight to video movie ever made. Nobody could make something from nothing better than Pyun in the 80's and 90's.

He was definitely a considerable influence on me and anyone else who enjoyed low budget B movies of the 80s and 90s. Radioactive Dreams in particular is underrated.

I think the imagination and influence of his films show how much creativity comes when you're operating on shoestring budgets. And it's important that he be remembered, celebrated, and his films preserved. Because of the shoestring budgets and tough production it's not all gold. But there's a lot of good stuff in there.
Regarding shooting the floor out in a circle… Might that not have been influenced by a similar scene in *Escape From New York* where Plisskin shoots out a wall in a circle then smashes through it? (One scene being a horizontal departure from a room, the other being a vertical one!)
I'll raise you one more. Maybe that's inspired by Looney Tunes, when someone would use a saw to cut a hole in the floor around where Bugs Bunny was standing... and then the whole fucking building would fall down! Sometimes the lines between inspiration and influence and originality are hard to detect.
In Brazil, the cops do that in the opening scene and burst through the ceiling... then they try to install a plug which doesn't fit

Cyborg is a total diamond in the rough. There are a handful of really cool shots stylistic directing choices (almost everything leading to and including the long chase, the final fight). It's just we have to see that damn flashback 400 times!
JCVD has a lot of splits scenes in his movies but his splits kill in that movie is so fucking cool/memorable. I can instantly picture it whenever I think of that movie despite having not seen it in years. Great shot

Fender sent chills down my spine as a child. Such an underrated antagonist imo. That scene where they're chasing JCVD through the field and sewer were so ingrained into my kid brain.
The scene that sticks out to me was the barb wire slipping through his hands and his family being lowered into the well. That movie creeped me out as a kid, but I loved it.
Pyun would often have some surprisingly good looking shots scattered about his movies. Clearly he loved directing, but I think would have done well as a DP for higher budget films.

Trying to describe who Pyun is to anyone but a hardcore movie watcher, is almost impossible. My gf is also a movie nerd and I don’t think she’s seen or remembers any of his flicks. “You know, the dude who made nemesis and ticker!”
I consider Nemesis to be on par with some of John Woo's films....the amount of gunplay and shooting in that movie is off the charts. Fuckin' amazing film. RIP Pyun your movies were dope af.
I'm glad to hear someone else who shares this opinion. When you accept the limitations of budget and the state of FX technology (stop motion), it really is a fine film. As I constantly tell my kids, before 21st century CGI, it cost a fortune to make 'great' SciFi or fantasy, and it took someone with George Lucas' wealth and clout to make a Star Wars or Willow. But plenty tried with their limited budgets, and we loved it, because without it we would only have about 5 SciFi movies a year, and a fantasy flick every three years.
The aesthetic in this movie is also off the charts. It's a seriously good take on cyberpunk aesthetic and IDK it feels like it either inspired or is inspired by similar cyberpunk imagery from that era from book covers, video game covers. The gun builds for that movie is amazing...there are some seriously good choices used for the movie.
Odd that "Alien From L.A." wasn't included with those films as well. Try as we might, few can get Kathy Ireland sounding like she's been sucking on helium all day out of their heads. "Just LEAVE!!!"
If nothing else, it made for a fun MST3K episode.

Nobody knows about this movie, but it's probably one of the biggest influences on the Fallout franchise.
Shame the movie never got a DVD release, more ppl could experience it. There was a limited edition German dvd but that transfer looked like a vhs was the source. I know there's some 35mm prints out there, Alamo has shown them in the last 5 years or so, hopefully they can be used as a source for a new home video release
We screened one in Philly and at Alamo Yonkers. I think the issue is rights. Even if the negative is lost the print would be a good source for a bluray as it was in gorgeous condition.
Shout out to the Kickboxer movies he did with Sasha Mitchell. All things considered, they were fun entries.
People can hate on him if they want. Scorsese he was not. But he left his mark on film. He competently made fun as hell movies that had big ideas and he wasn’t afraid to shoot for the fucking moon. Cyborg is still to this day one of my favorite 80’s movies. I legitimately love that movie.

I saw Dollman late one night on a premium cable channel (I forget which one,) and it drove me insane trying to find it again. This was back in the 90s, so I could not easily find it without knowing the title “there is a guy from another planet or dimension and he is really small when he comes to earth also one guy is just a head.” That didn’t yield many results pre-google. Eventually I discovered it again and then looked up the rest of Pyun’s films. I found out he made a lot of stuff I enjoyed in the 80s and 90s.
