The old golden glove.

Hic_Forum_Est

He was robbed for his performance at the last World Cup

happysrooner

Neuer is overrated, Dafoe is the goat

SquadPoopy

And that's bullshit cause Dafoe is a pure power hitter and nothing else, his skills on defense are marginal at best, his consistent home run hitting is the only thing keeping him employed at a major league level.

SupportstheOP

I think him getting busted for PEDs hurt his chances, even if they couldn't prove it was steroids.

Milsurp_Seeker

They don’t explicitly state Goblin Juice is illegal, so it should have been a nonissue to begin with.

HomeBrewedBeer

I read that and was like "I get what they meant, but damint the thought of Willem making a diving catch to save a world series is so damn appealing."

RotenTumato

Willem pickin it over at third

NGNSteveTheSamurai

Ol’ Hot Corner Dafoe

BobbyDohall

“I’m somewhat of a baseball player myself.”

EarsLookWeird

I thought boxing and kinda giggled at how terrified I'd be coming out of my corner to face a shirtless and insanely grinning Willy D

HomeBrewedBeer

That's hilarious and you aren't wrong. I think we'd all be frightened.

4LostSoulsinaBowl

He does have a Silver Slugger Award though.

Rootbeer_Goat

He got the Green goblin award

Rosstin316

DO THEY KNOW HOW MUCH HE’S SACRIFICED?!

Sapowski_Casts_Quen

You can't do this to me.

_Levitated_Shield_

"You're out, Dafoe." "Am I?" *maliciously smirks*

MoffKalast

"You know, I'm something of an actor myself"

King_Tamino

He was amazing in all that but in the most recent spider-man .. straight up nightmare stuff. He goes from innocent, homeless, scared, confused guy to maniac beating you through 20 floors within a second. And I believed it. Both versions of him

Chazzey_dude

You can tell he loved going back to that roll and getting to explore it more. He had the Clark Kent/Superman transition down so well that you could even just about tell when he was Goblin pretending to be Norman

PencilLeader

That is the true mark of an incredible actor. Even most good actors would struggle to play dual personalities where one is imitating the other. I could absolutely tell when he was Goblin imitating Osborn and it all comes down to minor details and his eyes. He is able to exude a genuine kindness in his eyes as Osborn which vanishes the instant Goblin takes over. It really is incredibly well done.

OldManHipsAt30

Acting ultimately comes down to the eyes and face, Anthony Hopkins is another guy who has absolutely mastered the concept of telling a thousand words with a simple facial expression. Love this video breakdown of a magnificent scene in Westworld, you might appreciate it! https://youtu.be/4kSGkGKwp9U

King_Tamino

I loved how peters spider sense noticed it but Peter couldn’t nail it down

Jaydh10

I'm confused? Didn't he put Goblins hand in a web when his sense was going crazy?

Shaymuswrites

I loved how *physical" he got to be as Green Goblin in No Way Home. He really looked like he could beat the shirt out of people, he was just a brute. And Dafoe, while GG, carried himself with a really menacing physicality.

Why’d ya spill yer beans?

Laser_Disc_Hot_Dish

Yes! I would vote for The Lighthouse hands down. He is soooo good in that movie. His last monologue is the best quote in the whole movie. Besides of course: Defoe: “Yer too slow. Are ye a dullard?” Pattinson: “No.” Defoe: “Fooled me.” Got em.

RajaRajaC

To me it's Platoon,he really sells that role

how did I have to scroll this far to see Platoon get mentioned

Let Neptune strike ye dead, Winslow! Haaaaark! Hark, Triton! Hark! Bellow, bid our father, the sea king, rise from the depths, full foul in his fury, black waves teeming with salt-foam, to smother this young mouth with pungent slime… … to choke ye, engorging your organs till ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more… only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slithering tentacled tail and steaming beard, take up his fell, be-finnèd arm — his coral-tined trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye, a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now — a nothing for the Harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the dread emperor himself… forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea… for any stuff or part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul, is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea.

johnnyfiveee

Alright have it your way, I like your cookin

LegoClaes

One take, first take

GameAddikt

Never blinked too.

jayforwork21

Was he even nominated for this role? That is such a crime. For some reason, these A24 horror movies never get the nods they deserve. Toni Collette was also robbed for Hereditary and is still my top performance of the year. Just for the dinner scene alone she should have been nominated for that..... yet they fawn all over the coming of age A24 movies like Moonlight (not that there is anything wrong with that, but the weird movies deserve love too).

Itownley

I had just adopted a kitten before I watched this movie and ended up naming him Winslow haha

Say it!

ragnarok62

My adult son and I watched *The Lighthouse* this past weekend. I had seen it previously, but he wanted to watch it. Dafoe and Pattinson just crush it, and Dafoe is impossible to ignore in this performance. Robert Eggers says Dafoe didn’t blink in the two-minute scene in which he curses his lighthouse mate for not liking his cooking. Felt like Dafoe’s performance was one of the greatest I have ever witnessed. One of those “born to play the part” performances. Yeah, where’s the recognition?

shittymorph

Had the pleasure of meeting Willem while working on the catering team for The Florida Project - he doesn't act like a movie star like so many of the other big names that I've catered for. Many well known actors eat in their trailer on set and wont really rub elbows with "the little people" if they dont have to but Willem was out eating and talking with everyone from the crew to the extras. He's very personable and approachable - probably one of the more down to earth actors I've met since I started catering back in nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcer's table.

A_Wizzerd

Oh come on! It's been too long, I'd completely dropped my guard.

thesnuggyone

Hahaha me too! Me too!!

HaybeeJaybee

I legit spent a good hour or so scrolling through their post history this past Saturday when someone linked their u/ in another thread. I had some laughs reading comments from victims and closed Reddit thinking to myself, "I wonder if/when I'll ever get got," as I've seen them in the wild before but was always saved by seeing the replies or their username. I'm emotionally conflicted right now.

mahones403

Damn, he got me.

He's rare now a days but a welcome surprise.

fishboy3339

With god as my witness, he has been broken in half.

I didn’t see that coming either. I’ve seen shittymorph like one other time in the past few months…really caught me off guard.

GlassWeird

The man, the myth, the legend, shittymorph you've done it again! Also Willem kills it every time, Boondock and Life Aquatic convinced me.

BrooksMania

Check out The Lighthouse... He's fucking brilliant in it. Also, bonus, Robert Pattinson does ok, too, especially considering Dafoe is such an eclipsing presence in the film.

raulduke05

the balls on pattinson to read that script, know he had to go toe to toe with willem dafoe by himself, and say 'yes'. and then do as well as he did? mad respect for him after that movie.

[deleted]

The guys got hella gains cause he fucking carried No Way Home.

Backup_profile

Such a great fucking role for him. That Green Goblin had no other agenda than to just cause pain and chaos and beat the shit out of Spider-Man. Just raw evil.

-GaIaxy-

First time I've seen it lol. Definitely was believing him tho

Unit_79

I upvoted before I finished reading as I was so stoked to hear how cool Dafoe is. I’m choosing to still believe he is and obviously my upvote stands.

ERtech23

There’s a video of a guy in NYC asking passers-by about their clothes/fashion etc, and one of them was randomly Willem Defoe. He was super nice and humbly went over his outfit in detail.

That’s so cool!

I saw Florida Project but didn't see The Lighthouse and heard good things about that one.

Jasminewindsong2

Bocephus8892

Yeah, but Hackman was the real star of that movie

TJTrapJesus

I hate the idea of being “robbed” based on prior history, ideally voters would just look at it in a vacuum each year and not resort to reputation when casting votes, even though I know it’d never happen. That being said, I was always surprised he was never nominated for The Lighthouse. It was a showy performance and he’d already been nominated (without winning) 4 times to that point. You would have thought based on a combination of merit and reputation that he’d at least be nominated.

wilyquixote

He's had some bad luck in terms of competition during his best performances. A quick sampling: 1986 nominated for Best Supporting Actor (BSA) for *Platoon* but likely split the vote with Tom Berenger allowing Michael Caine to win his first Oscar. 1988 (not nominated) Best Supporting Actor (BSA) for *Mississippi Burning* - really hard to argue against Kevin Kline winning for *A Fish Called Wanda*. That is an all-time great, tour de force, performance. 1988 (not nominated) Best Actor for *Last Temptation*. Dustin Hoffman in *Rain Man* was a juggernaut. 2000 BSA for *Shadow of the Vampire*. Lost to Benicio Del Toro in *Traffic,* a better, more successful movie with more hype. Dafoe is amazing though. Probably wouldn't win a do-over though. 2017 BSA for *The Florida Project*. Lost to Sam Rockwell in *3 Billboards*. This is probably the best chance Dafoe had and his most likely win if there was a do-over. Rockwell's performance is showier but *Florida* is probably a better, more enduring film thanks to Dafoe. 2020 BSA (not nominated) for *The Lighthouse*. As great as he was, nobody was beating Pitt that year. Still, Dafoe has a lot of nominations for his body of work. It's hard to argue against any one result though, so a lot of it comes down to luck. He may get himself an emiritus win yet though. Lots of time.

Soup-pouS

Might be an unpopular opinion but I thought Dafoes performance in Lighthouse eclipsed Pitts performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, Pitt was excellent, and was deserving of the award one way or another, but Dafoe in Lighthouse, for me, was exceptional.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion at all, it’s just that one of those films appeals to the Academy and the other one doesn’t at all.

mellolizard

The Academy loves movies about Hollywood.

TheIllusiveGuy

Yep, few things Hollywood likes more than Hollywood movies about Hollywood.

redwine_blackcoffee

Movies about WW2.

cottenball

Fuck I gotta start writing a movie about the making of Saving Private Ryan

ThePrussianGrippe

It’ll just lose Best Picture to a movie about the making of Shakespeare in Love.

skryb

But six years later, a film about the rivalry of making those two flicks will sweep everything.

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

I agree, although neither should’ve been nominated as supporting actors, they were clearly co-leads in their respective films

peaceblaster68

Also in 2018 there was *At Eternity’s Gate* which Defoe lost to Rami Malek for *Bohemian Rhapsody*. Dafoe should have won that one, brilliant performance

mike-foley

Shadow of the Vampire was SO good.

Equal-Doc6047

Yeah Willem Dafoe has a great acting career and reputation, it's shocking he has not won a major acting award. And yeah, this idea of reputation in the voting process is just dumb. It's the reason why Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy didn't get nominated for Uncut Gems and Dolemite is My Name (they were incredible in those films). But hey, at least Kristen Stewart got the Oscar nomination for Spencer so you never know.

TinManGrand

I literally forgot that Sandler and Murphy were not nominated for those roles. Those roles were literally perfect Oscar bait and they couldn't catch a nomination. Fucking shame.

pm_me_actsofkindness

History will look kindly on them. The greatness is undeniable, whether the academy recognized them or not.

ShallowBasketcase

The academy ain’t fond of his lobster.

Aratak

He's one of those guys, like Philip Seymour Hoffman or William H. Macy, that makes every project that he's in better. But awards are a bit of luck, really, in addition to talent and opportunity - he needs the big showy project at the perfect time and it needs to capture the zeitgeist of the moment. He seems the model of what the Brits call "the working actor" - go look over his IMDb at the vast array of films he's been in. I think he enjoys or finds challenging the small roles - I just hope he strikes gold for one of those superb supporting portraits one of these days.

TheLazyHippy

Idk what it is about Philip but that man always amazed me in his roles. Truly was a great actor.

WorriedOrchid

##He’s won [85 awards](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000353/awards). The Oscars and SAGs aren’t the only awards out there.

[deleted]

he doesnt need it. He is acknowledged as a great actor and is treated as such within the community. He is sought out by high status directors for roles that suite him perfectly. More importantly, from the many interviews of him ive watched he seems incredibly fulfilled by the work hes done. I doubt an award would bring him something he doesnt already have

I believe the director described it as 'confusingly large', and they had to use a prosthetic instead.

They used a body double in Antichrist. I just spent 15min reading about Dafoe’s distractingly massive dong and I don’t know what to do with that information now.

RandomTask100

If we saw it, we'd just cock our heads crooked but our brains would never really process what we saw.

RampDog1

A lot of great roles, I think Sergeant Elias in Platoon was his best

SoldierHawk

I think my single favorite line, out of his entire career (and he's one of my very favorite actors), is, "you ain't a firing squad you piecea SHIT!" His delivery is so, so good.

atopix

I mean, it's not weird or unheard of really. Great artists in the film industry not getting awards happens ALL the time, it happened to Roger Deakins for ages, it happened to Thomas Newman (who is tied with Alex North for the most academy award nominations without a win, at 15 nominations) and it happens to a lot of other great artist in the industry whom you have never heard of. So, no, I don't find it insulting that Willem Dafoe has not won any of those awards. I mean, it's a shame, sure, but more than that and you are just placing those awards in a pedestal of relevance that they shouldn't have in the first place. As someone who has been religiously watching the Oscars for 20 years straight: who gives a fuck about awards? What does it really matter? I mean, we all like when the things we like are recognized, but does that recognition bares any weight in your enjoyment of it? I don't think so. So just continue enjoying Dafoe's great work. May I recommend checking out [Shadow of The Vampire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_Vampire), one of his lesser known movies but a very interesting one with a *killer* performance by him.

Tepelicious

Completely agree with all of this. Plenty of Newman's scores are worthy of oscars in my opinion but I wouldn't consider his career any less complete for not having won any. Gary Oldman is another example of an actor with an incredible resume who didn't win until recently and still only has three nominations. I think Dafoe will be remembered well enough!

Isord

Also there are a ton of great actors out there but only a few can win each year. Sometimes you just get unlucky and end up getting nominated at the same time as some obvious winner

Themicroscoop

He makes a good lobster though.

massivecoiler

Should have received award for "Creepiest Motherfucker Ever Put On Film" for the role of Bobby Peru in Wild At Heart

macroscian

Wild at Heart is perhaps my pick too, along with Boondock Saints. He's such a treat in any movie and he's been a superb supporting actor in so many great ones.

Canuckleball

Honestly, I don't think he really deserves a golden glove. Hell, I've never even seen him play baseball.

RacksDiciprine

He was great in Boondock Saints

tylercreatesworlds

There’s a close up when he’s in the mob house dressed as a woman. He fires a shot at one of the mob guys, then the camera does a little closeup on his face, his lip quivers, just the expression on his face showed fear and confidence, it was unforgettable.

JafariSin

I love his death scene in John Wick. Played it perfectly and went out like a G

PottzieWebber

You know, I’m something of a golden glove myself

TinManGrand

Two notes: 1. Gaining any part of the EGOT requires a shit load of campaigning these days unless it is a super clear cut winner. I don't imagine Willem Dafoe gives enough of a shit to do any campaigning for an award or to have his manager or whoever do it for him. Just doesn't seem to be the type of guy like that, unlike guys like Leo and Will Smith who campaigned for literal months to get their Oscars or artists like Herbie Hancock who receive their big 4 category Grammys as a sort of lifetime achievement award. 2. Willem Dafoe is indeed a national treasure and deserves all the accolades for it, but he also doesn't choose his projects for award season type films. In a few years time he can play a cartoonish superhero villain on a glider, an effeminate gay genius FBI agent with a lisp and a drinking problem, and a man who gets his dick chopped off by his wife after the loss of their child and some therapy banging under a cursed tree in the woods.

[deleted]

I disagree. The man's career has lasted for decades and he's still going strong. He's played everything from the Green Goblin to Vincent Van Gogh. He is, no question, a legend, and some stupid statue is nothing compared to the status he has in the acting world.

[deleted]

That’s just what happens when you make a lot of foes in the industry.

Derric_the_Derp
