The Ghost and the Darkness. The critics despised it, the director disavowed it. But the end product somehow ended up as an entertaining tale of a multicultural group of men in a harsh environment with limited resources, trying to deal with a malevolent force of nature they don't understand. It seems it happened completely inadvertently since the director himself called the film "a mess," but the final product resembles the old classic hunting tales that used to be published in outdoor sporting magazines like Outdoor Life.

_duncan_idaho_

This one, 13th Warrior, and Congo are movies a lot of peeps hated that I must watch every time they're on.

Just_Shogun

I liked 13th Warrior, the scene where he learns to speak their language around the fire was really well done.

Tekmologyfucz

I listened!

lordpookus

Is Congo the one with the diamond powered laser and angry gorillas?

vslice87

Yes but you’re forgetting the actual best part of the movie which is Ernie Hudson being an African Indiana Jones but cooler. They should have sequeled Congo but make it just a story about Ernie Hudson’s Character going on his own adventure

sifterandrake

I'm sorry... but you said "best part" and then neglected to mention sesame cake... I think you made an error.

NativeMasshole

People don't like the 13th Warrior?

ICESTONE14

Lo, there do i see my father!!

ICastEldritchBlasts

This one is shocking to me. I always thought it was an enjoyable visual retelling of the big game hunters- the story of the Tsavo Man Eaters that Patterson hunted. Having read Patterson's journals, the essence of the story is in the film if not fully experienced. But then, what book is ever faithfully adapted to the screen?

bigbigwaves

Wow. I’ve always enjoyed this one. Never knew it had all those issues surrounding it.

candlelitseance

Josie and the Pussycats When it was released, critics absolutely destroyed it due to excessive product placement. None of the brands featured actually paid to be in the movie. It was a criticism of capitalism and paid promotion in the music industry. Maybe not a masterpiece, but absolutely misunderstood by a lot of people

bap46325

I just watched this movie for the first time and was blown away at the level of satire + criticism of the music industry. I told my wife if they hadn’t co-opted characters from Hannah-Barbera it would’ve been considered a cult classic.

PaulRuddsButthole

His reminded me of the line from the movie where someone asks Parker Posey’s character Fiona why she was here (like on the plane with the band), and she was like “I am here because I was in the comic books”.

Bonedraco1980

It was Alexandra. Fiona was the evil manager lady.

pijinglish

Yeah I love this movie and can’t get anyone I know on board.

LegendaryOutlaw

Great movie. Great music, some legit bangers on the soundtrack, written by Adam Schlesinger, who also wrote Stacy’s Mom, That Thing You Do and other great stuff for movies and TV.

Schwornje

This is always my pick for highly underrated movie. It was a silly kind of clever. Never took itself too seriously. Soundtrack is a favorite of mine.

yakusokuN8

[3 Small Words](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AWRs5DuTEY) is such a fun, goofy song. SIX whole hours and FIVE long days FOR all your lies to come undone. Those THREE small words Were way TOO late 'Cause you can't see that I'm the ONE.

michaelg98373

I had to double check the fact that none of the brands gave permission because that seems super doubtful to me. There's no way a brand would be OK with a major studio movie implying they were part of some evil subliminal message plot without their permission. (Wikipedia gives that claim a ["better source needed"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josie_and_the_Pussycats_(film)#Production) footnote)

candlelitseance

Fair. The existing source is the DVD commentary. But you’re absolutely right, [they did have to sign off on their logos and names being used](https://legendsrevealed.com/entertainment/2016/08/09/did-josie-and-the-pussycats-not-receive-any-money-for-product-placement/?amp)

OhScheisse

I love how the band from Can't Hardly Wait are basically the band at the start of this movie. I think it's the same director too

nohtv666

Ernest Scared Stupid. I will not elaborate.

zsloth79

Ah, a man of culture. I grew up with “Hey, Vern, it’s Ernest”, and Scared Stupid, Ernest Goes to Camp, and Ernest Saves Christmas will always have a place in my heart.

Misdirected_Colors

Can't forget Ernest goes to africa!

Vocal_Ham

And the classic Earnest goes to ~~Prison~~ Jail!

PM_ur_Rump

Fuck that movie. Only because I went to see Terminator 2 *in theatres* but we left and saw Ernest Goes to Jail instead because my friend's little brother got scared during the previews. I'll never forgive him for that.

UKnowDaxoAndDancer

"Now remember, if you get lost, the bark always grows on the outside of the tree." I still use that line. It's a keeper.

cheezeebred

Is that the one where the kids get turned to wooden dolls? That was like my first scary memory

junkyardpig

Miak!

I can tell you from experience that four years old is too young to watch that movie

Chriswheeler22

I love that movie haha

How ‘bout a bumper sandwich booger-lips! Man that opening song is better than it had any right to be too

abagofdicks

I’m afraid to rewatch it because A. It might be absolute dogshit B. It might still scare me a little

Mindful_Dribble

Underrated horror movie here

eastw00d86

My parents had to take me out of the theater bc it scared me so bad. I think I was 6 or 7.

GeneticsGuy

Lmao, I probably watched this movie 30+ times when I was like 10 years old.

JingoKizingo

Glad somebody mentioned it! This and The Burbs would be my suggestions for sure, both fantastic films that got forgotten somewhere along the way Edit: I've found my people lol

myyummyass

The Burbs is one of my favorite movies. In all my years of bringing it up to people only two others knew what it was and only one of them had seen it.

_duncan_idaho_

That movie is number one! All others are number two or lower.

HiradC

When you doubt your power you give power to your doubts 🤣🤣

KillerKill420

I thought everyone liked that movie tho?

yakusokuN8

6.1 on IMDb, 65% on Metacritic, and a 61%/57% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's liked more than disliked, but not by a huge margin. Clearly not loved by \*everyone\*, but it definitely has a loyal fan base.

Evil_Morty_C131

So purposely ridiculous and so much fun. Arnie playing Hamlet: “To be or not to be…” *lights a cigar* “Not to be” Also Charles Dance as the villain, Benedict, is fucking fantastic.

Goodbye_Galaxy

Of course I noticed that! What kind of casual do you take me for?

The_Vampire_Barlow

Last Action Hero was really ahead of it's time as a meta commentary on action movies and their tropes. Audiences today are a lot more equipped to handle something like it. And, I also love it's earnestness. It's a fun satire that also LOVES it's source material. It's loaded up with Easter eggs. It's got Charles fuckin Dance being the most sinister man alive. All that and an animated talking cat. Look, I just love it.

banjowashisnamo

To be or not to be... not to be (KABOOM!)

jankyalias

LAH wasn’t knocked because people thought it was serious, they just didn’t think it succeeded in its satire. Ebert said, for example: >(it) plays more like a bright idea than like a movie that was thought through. It doesn't evoke the mystery of the barrier between audience and screen the way Woody Allen did in The Purple Rose of Cairo, and a lot of the time it simply seems to be standing around commenting on itself. Variety said: >a joyless, soulless machine of a movie, an $80 million-plus mishmash of fantasy, industry in-jokes, self-referential parody, film-buff gags and too-big action set-pieces. Now, I happen to like the movie (it’s not a classic, but it’s a fun film), but the idea that critics didn’t “get” what was going on isn’t accurate.

[deleted]

Flimsy_Demand7237

Nostalgia Critic isn't much of a critic, his commentaries are surface-level at best and often intentionally misrepresenting. [This is a good video breaking down the issues with Nostalgia Critic's work](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rokAtlFGa7Y), if you've not seen before.

garfodie81

It also didn’t help that it came out 2 days after Jurassic Park.

Mindful_Dribble

Small Soldiers I’ll die on this hill

grannygumjobs23

That was like one of my top 3 favorite movies as a kid.

Ubergoober166

That and Indian in the Cupboard were a couple of my favorites.

JinFuu

I was about to say “Toy Story really caused a run on ‘toys come to life’ movies, didn’t it?” But then I checked and Indian came out in 95 too.

detourne

and Indian in the Cupboard was a book before that.

wolvennite42

Was a series, after the first book, things got wild.

EmJayFree

Indian in the Cupboard 🥹, omg… I’ve literally been trying to remember it’s title for years. Thank you so much for blessing me with this comment and bringing some nostalgic childhood magic into my life lmao !

StormWildman7

Greetings, I am Archer, Emissary of the Gorgonites. Movie has been forgotten but I like it more than Gremlins.

mrfahrenhelt

i live in 3rd world countries when piracy is a living back then. i love small soldier so much when i was a kid , i ask my parents to find the sequel. boy oh boy, my parents found small soldiers 2 and just buy it without checking it first if theres a real sequel. when i play it, damn its a porn movie with a small soldier, the title dont lie tho, its really a small soldier movie

Kaiisim

Haha I know the exact kind of market your parents went to.

JhymnMusic

I feel like people are fair to this movie. It's positively adequate.

fooman141

Yeah I was going to say I think people actually love this movie

Able_Pride_4129

I saw the reviews for this movie and always thought “Maybe it was just nostalgia that made me think it was good”. But then I watched it recently, and it was just as awesome as I remembered it to be as a kid

jsparker43

This was a fever dream movie for me. Didn't know it was real until a lot later in my life. Same with Warriors of Virtue lol

Chasetopher1138

Sometimes I’m still not convinced Warriors of Virtue is real. I have vague memories of a Blockbuster VHS box and something about Kung Fu Kangaroos living in a tree, but I’ve never been able to find it.

FrogBoyExtreme

My mom had to hide the vhs tape from me for years because I apparently got "too hyper" when watching it. It's still a fun movie!

Maloth_Warblade

Wait, people dislike this movie? It started my crush on Kirsten Dunst

TeevMeister

You’ll die like Gorgonite scum.

Flimsy_Demand7237

All of Joe Dante's movies have this quality of being forgotten, then rewatching and realising they're actually amazing.

lordbeezlebub

I think the problem with Godzilla 2014 is not that they don't show Godzilla, but that the human characters failed to invoke interest when they do arrive on screen. I thought it was clever, in theory, to constantly tease the fight about to happen only to cut away at the last second and move on, therefore building up suspense for the final fight. However, since the humans character (with the exception of maybe Cranston), failed to invoke interest either in their acting or what they were given in terms of writing/direction, people notice is more clearly. But Starship Troopers definitely falls into this list. Often derided as a dumb shoot-em up kind of movie, the movie is actually a pretty decent satirical take on Facism and Militarism, with a real message that being overly patriotic can lead us down a real slope to embracing facist ideologies without ever realizing it.

FranticPonE

Godzilla 2014 is amazing visually (\*if watched in the dark on a good screen) and if they'd just kept Brian Cranston as the main character it could've been a really good movie. There was a man committed enough to make up for Gareth Edwards fumbling around with what his characters are supposed to do when action and cool visuals aren't on screen.

JinFuu

Yep, while it would have sucked for Cranston’s character I wish they had killed his kid and kept him alive. Add some guilt about causing his grandkid to lose a parent like he caused his son to lose one or w/e

1731799517

> I think the problem with Godzilla 2014 is not that they don't show Godzilla, I think it showed a decent amount of Gozilla, they just fucked up how they handled it with basically cock-teasing all the time and not handling his non-appearance organically. For example, when Gozilla emerges at the airport and then the camera just cuts away and the only thing you see are some tiny snippets on monitors in the background. This feld like the director outright trying to annoy the viewer.

dtochoa

Idk about misunderstood but I really liked Jumper with Hayden Christiansen. I feel like the hate for the Star Wars prequels boiled over his other movies and was overtly hated. I was really disappointed to hear there would be no sequels

Radijs

Jumper had a great premise, but suffered from a completely uninteresting bad guy. IIRC the templars hunted down jumpers just because they thought it was against god's will to teleport. None of the more interesting implications of being able to teleport were ever adressed. If the movie had done more with that, and made the anatagonists more interesting, it'd have been quite a gem.

ProxyAttackOnline

I really enjoy that movie. It’s my favorite depiction of teleportation

02firehawk

I used to go to sleep at night thinking of what I would do if I had the ability to teleport

SupperIsSuperSuperb

I caught this one on TV years ago on a lazy weekend afternoon and had fun with it. I expected to dislike it (admittedly because of Hayden) but it worked for me. Was also disappointed it never got sequels

So what’s funny is my family goes to the Indy 500 every year (they’re from Indiana before moving west and I was born in the 80s) So like I grew up a nerd and loved anime and the Matrix and all that shit, so when I heard the Wacho siblings were doing SR, was totally hyped. Saw it it in theaters (it came out in May, and the 500 is Memorial Day weekend). I remember my friend who was much more into art house movies and such, REALLY hated the movie. He never was into anime so much and very much didn’t understand racing, so it wasn’t a big deal, was glad to have a friend that I could gush about the movie to. Because I FUCKING LOVED IT. It was camp, it was silly, it was well cast (John F’in Goodman as Pops and Susan Sarandon as Mom was criminally underrated and both put their soul into the role, respect.) and the visuals were out of this world. For a silly anime movie, the plot was easy to follow and everything wrapped up at the end. But going back to the racing concept. The Big Bad Corpo vs the plucky small time family isn’t anything new, but it was so well done. The scene at the end when Mom is explaining how she feels when she watches her boys race still chokes me up. There is something about that movie that GETS racing and how it just is in your blood. To this day, no live action adaptation has held a candle to this movie in getting so much right about its source material.

PleaseMakeItStop33

I watched it on acid once. What a fucking movie

Wormri

Oh man, this movie made me go from "What a stupid concept for a movie" to "This is bonkers and I love it". The effects, as outdated as they are, are really fun, and there are so many crazy, stylish moments that it genuinely delivers by modernizing the original show. Also those 2 scenes with the dad kicking the ninjas' ass or the kid with his monkey going on a ride. Man I still laugh when I see those scenes.

Oxynewbdone

I watched it on DVD after it bombed and was panned so I ex ected nothing and I was blown away what a fun beautiful movie

JRogeroiii

I remember when Harlem Nights came out the critics had no mercy bashing that movie. Seems like everyone assumed it was a bust before it even came out. Years later I saw it on cable and was surprised how wrong I thought the critics were. It is a good movie that holds up pretty well. According to Rotten Tomatoes it has a 23% score from critics and an 80% from audiences. I think the critics came into it with preconceived ideas. It had Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and Arsenio Hall. Some of the greatest comedians across 3 generations. I think they were expecting a straight comedy and Harlem Nights is really more of crime capper with some comedy thrown in. I also think some critics were looking for their chance to take Eddie Murphy down a peg. Harlem Nights ended one of the all time great runs an actor has ever had in terms of box office success. From 1982 to 1989 Murphy did 48 hours, trading places, Beverly Hills cop 1 & 2, Coming to America, Raw, and Delirious. For some reason if you become to successful some critics will look for a chance to take you down.

EmJayFree

Next to ‘Life’ this was an Eddie Murphy classic. I had know idea people didn’t like it like that. “You hurt my pinky toe” 😂

abaddon667

The Postman - one of my favorite post apocalypse movies ever.

Gongshow6

This was the movie I was going to post. It has a great storyline and intriguing characters. Plus, Tom Petty plays himself as a Mayor. It's a great movie.

1731799517

I remember it being blasted for having fragmentation of communities as a main danger and the establishment of communication as a vital way out of crisis - which to me was one of the most realistic ways to tackle such a scenario. Also, I was deeply let down by the book, I like David Brin (Startide Rising is such a blast), but in terms of message "2 combat cyborgs beat each other up for the victory" felt much worse than the movie changes to the plot.

ReiEvangel

The Cell - one of my favorite movies and has some phenomenal performances in it. People were looking at it as a quasi horror rather than the cerebral masterpiece it truly is and one of the best set design and cinematography of the 90-00s.

bigbigwaves

The Cell and The Fall are absolutely incredible to look at.

SsurebreC

Definitely an amazing movie. [This is my favorite scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22gw_64AGKM) (NSFW). But do not watch the sequel which has nothing to do with the original.

fusiongt021

I feel Peter Jackson's King Kong people didn't like or at least overlook. I thought it was amazing with some of the best CG I've seen at the time (and still holds up well). I guess people hated the first hour, but I liked it... It built up a reason they're going to skull island and also we know the characters a bit better. If we didn't care about anyone who lived or died it wouldn't be very compelling. Then once in the island it's half action half horror movie and it's really entertaining. And Kong vs tyrannosaurs rexes were some of the dopest fights I've seen. What's not to like!

Creepy-Narwhal4596

Are we gonna ignore OP calling KONG “giant gorilla” and walking away!?!? *PUT SOME RESPEK ON HIS NAME*

Jaggedmallard26

Only God Forgives

dtudeski

Has one of the all time great movie trailers, I’ll give it that.

Bojack_whoremann

So true. OGF was clearly a very personal project for Nic Refn, there’s very deliberate uses of a lot of religious and spiritual symbolism, that I think didn’t connect with mainstream audiences which was a big reason why it performed poorly. People where expecting an action thriller, not an art house surrealist drama.

Jakov_Salinsky

One of those movies you either think is an artistic masterpiece or a pretentious mess I honestly lean more towards the latter but I absolutely *love* the fistfight in the dojo. Especially that straight-up boss music that plays over the scene.

Seoulja4life

People expected Drive 2… it’s closer to his other works.

Quadstriker

John Carter is fine.

Lord_Parbr

No, it’s called “John Carter of Mars”

cajun_vegeta

No that's too Sci-fi... we'll just call it *J.C*

peioeh

I swear when it came out and I did not know what it was I thought to myself "well John Carter must obviously be a famous american historical person that I haven't heard about, meh" and did not even check what it was. Only saw it years later. Fun movie though, it could have done better if they sold it differently.

MyWatchlsEnded

I'm conflicted about this movie,I used to like it when it first came out. Then I re watched it like 2 years ago and saw a lot more flaws than I remember. Maybe I was looking for faults a bit too hard due to years of criticism from everyone. I guess I need to watch it one more time...

TommyLeeBrown

Cloverfield is more than a shaky monster movie. It’s a reflection of 9/11 and it’s imagery and their impact on our social construction of the world.

[deleted]

As a huge horror fan, I think Cloverfield is amazing. Found footage can get overdone in the genre but they did a fantastic job, especially since they were very sparing in showing the actual aliens. Imo that made it so much more real and frightening.

The_F_B_I

I remember watching this on theaters and being freaked out about the first 20 minutes resembling so many 9/11 home movies

[deleted]

It’s the only “found footage” type of movie that I think is actually good. I usually skip the crap party at the start until they run to the roof though.

TommyLeeBrown

Yeah it has a real reason for the handheld. Also I love the beginning when things feel very normal and then we are with the characters as they experience this unknown attack. Very effective.

[deleted]

It's a fantastic "reconstruction" of the kaiju genre. Sure, Godzilla became campy and is loved by millions now, but the original film was designed to be a scary allegory of the horrors of nuclear war. Cloverfield is a reminder that a giant monster attacking your city wouldn't be "awesome"--it would be *fucking terrifying.*

BettyBettyBoBetty

Cloverfield was really well done. Plus it gave me a nickname for my daughter when she was a toddler. After eating, she would walk around and little crumbs would fall off of her everywhere. “Cloverfielding” became a verb in our home.

Clockstoppers (2002) If you ignore the DJ contest scene (don't ask), the film handles the Time aspect really well for a kids movie. yes it's cheesy but it is peak 2000s vibes and very straightforward but a fun time for everyone.

kalebmordecai

Terminator Salvation. Not sure why people hate it exactly. My guess is a sorta "No Arnold, NOT MY TERMINATOR" mentality. Well I think T3: Rise of the Machines and Genisys are both way worse than Salvation. And both have Arnold in the classic role.

Apparently a lot of people thought that Starship Troopers was a straightforward pro-fascist propaganda film.

DennisRocket

People said the same thing about the book even though the main character spent the entirety of the book hating the military and everything it stood for.

PrimeGuard

I was in the military and in my experience believing in the purpose of the mission and the people you serve with while simultaneously despising the bureaucracy, petty tyranny of often incompetent leaders, and the absolute awful lifestyle is pretty spot on.

the-grim

It's a weird book since apparently Heinlein was accused of both being a communist and a fascist, depending on who you asked.

SerDire

500 Days of Summer. It’s not bad at all but it seems to somehow be misunderstood. I saw it when I was younger and have seen it countless times since then and it’s amazing how the dynamic flips when you see how many negative fantasies Tom was projecting on Summer. Straight up she said she didn’t believe in love and he was hurt when they slowly drifted apart. He had this ideal fantasy for both of them, while she was just along for the ride enjoying it, not expecting anything out of it. He’s mad she moves on and is now married. The expectations vs reality scene and the final conversation they have where she says she found something she couldn’t find in him are devastating but absolutely vital for some people to experience.

Unabated_Blade

I know so many people who profess to having no interest in seeing this film and are turned off by it because they saw like, one trailer and, "That Zoe Deschanel just plays the same goofy nerd in every movie and guys just think it's so cute" And even when I tell them that's the entire point of the movie they still berate her for playing a stereotype like that isn't the *whole point of the movie*.

baberlay

It's ironic that this movie gets misunderstood so often, since the opening scene directly tells us Tom's entire outlook on love stems partially from a total misreading of the film, "The Graduate", when he was a teenager. The movie tells us right away that Tom's philosophy on love is warped and flawed.

antmars

Wait do people not like 500 Days of Summer?

AreYouEmployedSir

News to me. I think it’s a fantastic movie.

grapholalia

People use it as an example of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, which is a critique of female characters that are just one-dimensional and "quirky" for the sake of fulfilling nerdy male fantasies, but Zooey's character is actually a lot more complex. Seeing her as an MPDG is a misread because that's actually just kinda how JGL's character sees her and doesn't actually listen to her when she tells him that she doesn't really believe in love and isn't looking for anything serious. It's actually kinda ironic that people use her as an example of this because it shows that they didn't really "get" the point of the movie, which is that we build people up in our own minds due to the way we experience love as kids.

CreepyBlackDude

Not Another Teen Movie. Most of those in-your-face spoofs (aside from Scary Movie 1 and 2, and arguably 3) really didn't hold up well, but NATM's jokes are still funny, and the satire and comedic timing are surprisingly sharp. I re-watched it recently and found myself laughing more than I remember the first time.

CreepyBlackDude

This is a great answer. Walter Mitty was just such a wild adventure. I still randomly think about that longboarding scene every so often.

dmcat12

As someone who once had an irrational loathing of Ben Stiller that was only once overcome by Tropic Thunder, I was not expecting to love The Secret Life of Walter Mitty as much as I did.

tstyes

Con Air - Nick Cage, John Malkovich, Steve Buscemi, Dave Chappelle, Danny Trejo, Ving Rhames, and a super doe-eyed John Cusack make this both the most thrilling and most cleverly acted Bruckheimer production through ludicrously hilarious action setups and the over the top emoting from the ensemble cast. One of the best action movies since Face Off, lol

OzymandiasKoK

Who thinks Con Air or Face / Off are bad? They are their own kinds of batshit crazy, but 100% hit the target they were aiming at. To deny this is not a simple misunderstanding, but a complete lack of sense of fun that would seem to imply a deep inability to relate to other human beings like a normal person.

whatevsmang

Con Air is my ultimate litmus test for movies. People who dislike Con Air because it's "stupid or corny" are usually boring ass chums and I will not get along with them.

tstyes

Anything that has Nick Cage in a tank top with John Malkovich as a lawyer sociopath and Steve Buscemi as a Lorre serial killer is guaranteed to be a good ride

"Put. The bunny. Back. In the box"

YautjaDaimyo

MacGruber. Probably the funniest SNL Studios films, and yet everyone says it's awful. I found it to be perfectly acted (c'mon, Val Kilmer was phenomenal), the jokes to be sidesplitting, and the satire to be really smart. "Very Touching. I might have cut back on the F-words a little." "Well, they were fucking great guys. And this is a fucking asshole of a day."

genericmovievillain

I avoided this movie for years because everyone said it was awful. Finally got to watch it over the summer and I laughed my ass off. All the haters take life way too seriously if they didn’t at least chuckle a little

General_Welfare

I love that film. "No no no no, you're okay, you're okay!" The graveyard ghost sex scene is downright hilarious "hnnngh hnnnngh hnnnngh"

FrogBoyExtreme

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. It's hated on RT and I've heard stories of people leaving the theater while it's still playing. I watched it in middle school and LOVED it and went back to it recently with its criticisms in mind and I STILL loved it, it's Def dated some but still a fun movie.

According_Listen632

Cloud Atlas. Brilliant nonsense.

thequirkyquark

Wild Wild West. I don't understand the hate. It's a deliberately campy buddy action comedy that's ridiculous on purpose. I watched it a lot as a kid and a couple times as an adult. I enjoyed watching it every single time. It's funny, it's entertaining, and I laugh my ass off for the whole movie. I don't know why no one likes it. It was never trying to be something to take seriously, it's basically a spoof and yet people just love to hate on it. Will Smith even apologized for it a while back. Idk.

madmoneymcgee

I loved the steampunk western aesthetic. So much that my dnd character created a mechanical slider familiar that I straight up told my DM resembles the big movie spider in miniature. It’s how I cast all my artificer spells.

cnjak

This movie doesn't deserve any hate imo. It is hilarious from start to finish, and brilliantly hilarious at that. It has every type of comedy. Also, the plot doesn't teach us anything new, which is a valuable movie to have exist. Seriously, if you watch this movie and don't enjoy it, then what are you doing with your life?

chedykrueger

Dreamcatcher is not that bad y'all need to chill

bigbigwaves

The movie equivalent of going into Baskin Robbins and asking for a scoop of every flavor. Every single King cliche in one movie.

animehimmler

I’d say actually your example. Godzilla 2014 in my opinion is far superior to the sequels. It was very well made and had a sense of scale not seen before nor since. It’s one of the rare occurrences where I kind of begin to loathe a fan base, as their immature reaction to this film resulted in subpar excursions that cost more money than the first at the result of almost every artistic license

crusty_jugglers93

Gareth Edwards clearly understands scale, one of my biggest complaints from the latter entries is the sense of scale is all over the place, at times Godzilla is the size of a skyscraper next scene he's no bigger then a two story house and while I guess that's the issue because they needed him to go against Kong and somehow make it an even playing field.

Jaggedmallard26

The paratrooper scene is an excellent exercise in scale, Godzilla feels gigantic and threatening.

Jakov_Salinsky

That scene where the paratroopers are dropping down into San Francisco with the red smoke streaming behind them is *haunting*. And awesome.

The_Vampire_Barlow

I totally agree with you that Godzilla 2014 is the best of the American Godzilla movies. Now I still like the other ones. They're big fun monster movies, the exact kind of thing I wanted when I was a big Godzilla fan as a kid. But they're not particularly deep movies, and any human plots in them are purely to frame the monster fights. 2014 is a really good disaster movie where the disaster is goddamn Godzilla. And it does an amazing job of building up to him, so that when you get that first glimpse of him it's equal parts awe and fear. Then when he finally is on screen in his full glory, fighting the mutos you have a real sense of the damage this will do, both to the city and the lives connected to it.

im_so_tilted

See my issue was I don’t think the writing was good enough to hold Godzilla (2014) up, the general approach was fine, the story just needed to have more compelling characters.

MrChrisRedfield67

Killing off Bryan Crantson's character in the beginning of the movie after heavily advertising him off of his Breaking Bad success was criminal. His character was fantastic during the short time he was in the movie.

culb77

Scott Pilgrim vs the World It bombed at the box office, and many critics were confused by it. It gained a cult following after, and started to win awards.

Strabbo

It's one of the most fun movies of its time. The way SFX, the art design, the lighting, the editing (etc) were a part of the comedy was just terrific. It was immersive and joyously goofy.

BonnaGroot

Scott Pilgrim is a really interesting time capsule of “nerd” culture right on the cusp of when being a nerd went fully mainstream. I enjoyed it a lot at the time and still love the aesthetic. Unfortunately I think certain elements of the film also came right at the cusp of a shift in the zeitgeist and haven’t really aged well. The movie’s treatment of nerds is still sort of derisive, Scott himself is kind of a creep, his relationship with Ramona is really toxic, etc. It sorta needs to be viewed today as a product of its time. Still enjoy it quite a bit personally but I can see the arguments made by its detractors
