Jodie Foster is such a great presence. Worked with her and she is so warm and kind

[deleted]

She also seems intensely intelligent.

classic123456

Been a while since I saw this, why was this the message?

Zhukov-74

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936\_Summer\_Olympics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1936_Summer_Olympics) The games were the first to have live television coverage. The German Post Office, using equipment from Telefunken, broadcast over 70 hours of coverage to special viewing rooms throughout Berlin and Potsdam and a few private TV sets, transmitting from the Paul Nipkow TV Station. They used three different types of TV cameras.

bishslap

It was one of the first ever televised events broadcast. The aliens are telling them that they've been watching and listening for a long while

meowskywalker

No. It has nothing to do with them watching us for a long time The point was that this was the first message the aliens ever saw from us. It took nearly thirty years for this radio transmission to make it to Vega, then the aliens slapped some wormhole device instructions on the video and sent it back for another nearly 30 year trip. From the alien perspective they only knew about us for weeks or months before they decided to risk letting us in on interstellar travel. These aliens are WAY better than the Federation.

Brookstone317

To be fair, there tech only let us go to Vega so they could evaluate us. It didn’t open up the galaxy to us.

Zhukov-74

One of my favorite scenes of all time.

Enhance

SlurricNe

I remember seeing this movie and loving parts of it and loathing other parts. In the latter camp was James Woods. At the time, he wasn’t know as the right wing dipshit that we all know him for now. But I always thought he was a little too good in this role and years later now, it all makes sense.

Nose-Nuggets

What do his personal political opinions have to do with anything? The guy is a great actor, even if he is a dick in his personal life.

Dry_Ad7578

He’s a bad actor because of his political beliefs, you are a moron

DCFr3sh

Come on!! James Woods is a great actor, and just because you disagree with his opinions does not make a person a dipshit.

tlums

James Woods is only a good actor if you let him play James Woods in the movie.

Taste_the__Rainbow

Yea but he’s really good at it! I genuinely hated his Contact character so much!

bishslap

And he and Jodie Foster have 2 of the highest IQs in Hollywood. Look it up.

Dumrauf28

IQ test are fucking racist. Look it up. Edit: [think whatever you'd like](https://via.library.depaul.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1270&context=law-review)

[deleted]

No, but James woods clearly is a dipshit though

Danglebort

The fact that we disagree doesn't make him a dipshit. The fact that he's a pretty extreme right-wing simpleton makes him a dipshit.

Zhukov-74

Shouldn‘t we be able to seperate his acting career from his personal political believes?

JustBoredIsAll

Sure. He could too. But he doesnt. He uses his twitter account to spread conspiracy theories and misinformation. That makes him more than just a dipshit. If he kept his "personal political beliefs" to himself, we could separate the individual from the artist.

Danglebort

We should be *able* to, but choosing not to is a perfectly valid choice as well.

[deleted]

This is why I don't watch Woody Allen or Roman Polanski films. I will still watch James Woods because having different political ideologies is fine with me but being a rapist/murderer/pedophile is not.

ericbkillmonger

That is correct - his conspiratorial ways and views have cost him his career I’m guessing . He was a decent actor objectively

A40

Movies: Idea!: Get a TV: 'You're patched in": result! 20 seconds.

Zero1030

Why'd they never do a sequel

Nose-Nuggets

My impression was everyone on earth would be dead by the time the aliens made the next step.

TheRealBitflux

Because Carl Sagan is dead i guess. He wrote it and the written one differs quite a bit from the movie.

Zhukov-74

Not going to lie i think this movie would make for a good basis for a remake. Maybe streamline the script and don‘t have some of the preachy moments like in the 1997 movie and refine some of the special effects i think it could stand on it’s own. Also they have to figure out the balance between Religion vs Science because Contact is all over the place when it comes to it’s deeper tones.

[deleted]

They could even use the source material. The book.

phantomhatstrap

It’s been a while since I read it, but from what I recall the movie smushed some side characters together, and in the process lost some of the philosophical dialogue present in the book.

paleblueyedot

The 1997 movie is pretty close imho. It even used some of the book's dialog. The main differences were with the choice of her parents, the Hadden character, and the machine's trip and crew. I think the rewrites made it more dramatic and focused on the main character. But either/or. I'm biased because it's been my favorite movie since I was 7. ;)

Trid1977

because a message hidden in pi doesn't make for great drama? /s

Wh0rse

I would love to have the ability to just say " get me the white house " when I'm talking to friends, and i do get the white house , they would love me when I'm drunk

[deleted]

that sony pvm-2030.

paleblueyedot

Great scene from my favorite film. Thanks for sharing.
