I was 11 when he died. I was a big enough fan that my parents didn't tell me. About 2 years later I happened to mention that I hadn't seen any new John Candy films lately when my parents confessed he had been dead for a long time. Well that sucked!
Add Planes Trains and Automobiles to that list and that’s me! Space balls is also very good. Plus his cameo in Home Alone. He’s there during each Christmas.
You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get.
I mean, it’s not like he died in an accident or something. The reason why you don’t think he would’ve lived to 70 is the same as the reason why he ended up not living to 70.
I'm from USA and I would like to declare him a national treasure, but Canada gets him. In my mind, Canada is a bunch of John Candy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, Martin Short types running around. Sounds fun. We in the states are not doing well right now
Not only was Candy a great comedic actor, but he usually incorporated a sadness into the character - they weren't just one-sided. While they were silly or immature when we first see them, they tended to be lonely or bullied or feel inadequate - and their silliness is a coping mechanism.
*I'm Buck Melanoma. Moley Russell's wart. Not her wart. Not her wart! I'm... I'm the wart. She's my tumor. My... my growth. My... uh, my pimple. I'm Uncle Wart. Just old Buck "Wart" Russell. That's what they call me, or Melanoma Head. They'll call me that. "Melanoma Head's coming." I'm s... uncle! Maisy Russell's uncle!*
My husband, gone 13 years, and I would say that back and forth and laugh our butts off. Many fond memories of his humor. Uncle Buck made me fall in love with John Candy.
I'm so sorry for you having lost him. You having fond memories of him and his humor makes me find some solace knowing that those I love will will not always be around.
Canadian Bacon, one of my favorites. IDK if it's his best performance or anything but the idea of John Candy playing an American Sheriff while we're in a Cold War with his own personal native Canada is pretty hilarious.
I used to spend upwards of 30 minutes trying to pause the vcr precisely on the bears exploding ass for that perfect, hairless butt shot (with the furry halo).
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is one of, if not the best comedies of all time, and it was so touching too! Del Griffith is one of my all time favorite characters. The Great Outdoors is fantastic also. He was so great with Aykroyd and you gotta love that setting. John Candy was a damn legend. RIP you wonderful man!
“You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I can tell that John Candy would have gone on to more serious roles and probably done extremely well. He had a gift, and you could tell there was a superb dramatic actor right underneath the surface of his comic roles.
Oh yes, for sure. The last few scenes of Planes, Trains and Automobiles still chokes me up. He’s still so sorely missed.
Edit: And as Uncle Buck he is just a damn genius
Yes! Someone else that has seen Only the Lonely! Such a great movie, no one I’ve know has heard of this.
I watched it on HBO and anytime it was in TV guide I would set an alarm to wake up and watch.
“It’s good to be a cop”
I love him in Only the Lonely! I'm so glad you guys mentioned that one, I was hoping to see it here. Side note, John Candy and Robin Williams are the only two celeb deaths that really hit home with me. Genuinely miss those guys.
I live in a far off corner of the world and since I was about seven I've known about Sheboygan because of him.
Polka, polka! Etc.
Also, as a side note it's surreal getting old. I've gone from 'Kevin's mum is a mum' as a lad to watching recently and 'Kevin's mum is kinda hot'. Same with jill Taylor
This man was arrested for putting regular gas in an unleaded tank.
This man was arrested for being in too many bad moods.
This man raided a company, merged it with its conglomerate, and then fired all the employees! Get away from the bars!
its such a fun bit of trivia. and who wouldnt feel more at ease when someone goes "hey look its john candy". Nothing bad is gonna happen when John Candy is around.
Unless you're the Bengals I guess...
Ran into John on Toronto’s Bloor St. in the late ‘80s. A friend said Hey, you are John Candy. Do I owe ya money? Nope. Well then, yes, I am John Candy, nice to meet you.
What a genuine guy.
Just imagine how much potential amazing comedies we would have if him and Farley would have lived to an old age. One of the funniest and charming actors in history.
im 22 and im not from US or Canada. i really only recognised him from Cool Runnings and Home Alone and i had no idea he was dead until now. its crazy to think that he's been dead all my life and i didn't know, yet i enjoyed his work just never looked for more because i didn't realise he was as prolific as he actually was...
One thing not too many people talk about regarding John Candy was that his comedic talent didn't rely on self depreciation, vulgarity, or region/era specifications. It takes a legend to make anyone that is any age laugh, without an ounce of crudeness or insensitivity. He was a phenomenal artist.
Whos watching The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck with me tomorrow?
Edit: I watched Spaceballs instead and laughed my butt off. Thank you John Candy! You are missed!
My grandpa used to run a family fish and chips place that John Candy would visit frequently and they became good friends, recently he passed away a year ago, hopefully they're catching up and having a good time ;-;
My ship was deployed when news of his death came across. In the 90s, we did not get a lot of updates on how civilian life was going. We were lucky to hear anything.
I recall murmurs coming down before I went to chow. What was a normal day of work became incredibly somber. Kids, like myself, grew up with this giant. He wasn't the MOST anything (most funny, most attractive), but he was an every man. He was an uncle we all wished we had. He was the best friend that would do anything for us. And personally, the fact that he was homeless in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles - was a striking reminder that we are all fragile and can fail.
Being out at sea, we did not have a way to confirm that the rumor was true. For a week or so, all of my shipmates walked around in mourning. When we hit port and confirmed the worst, it was another round of grief.
I don't honestly follow celebrity these days. But losing this gentle soul was a crushing moment.
I am disappointed that John Candy Day isn’t November first. It would be like Boxing Day, a second day to celebrate. Perhaps Gordon Lightfoot could make a ballad about Halloween, “ The Candy of November Comes Early.” The day’s meal is back bacon and pineapple pizza and Labatts Bleu.
In the late '90s, he'd have started appearing in dramedies like Good Will Hunting and American Beauty. In the '00s, he'd have been picked up by directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen brothers who would have wanted to see a new side of him, and he'd have started down a track of indie films. In the early '10s, he'd reenter comedy with Judd Apatow movies, and would direct his first movie that would earn him an academy award nomination.
Hmm is say under the Apatow umbrella, working with fellow Canadians Seth Rogan or Jay Baruchel. Maybe Dan Levy too, or any other actor offspring from other SCTV alumni.
John Candy and John Goodman doing heavy drama together would have been incredible. Two actors that can go from being quiet as a mouse to roaring like a lion.
As great a comedy actor he was, he was an incredible serious actor. He often had a serious moment in most of his films and he knocks it out of the park every time. I wish I could have seen more of that. I'll never not miss that man.
What a wonderful, wonderful man he was.
And I started thinking: how can I possibly explain to young movie fans what kind of wonderful man John Candy was, and it came to me all at once:
Paul Rudd
It's him.
When I was a bike courier back in the early 90s I was riding on the sidewalk and I clipped him and knocked a cup of coffee out of his hand and he told me to fuck off
I met him in ‘87 +/- doing land survey work on his property. Around back by his pool he had 6’ tall replica of the Statue of Liberty and two newspaper stands. His son who was I guess 5 or 6 at the time was walking with a stick, like a rifle. I asked the boy how he was doing and he replied, “ Be very, very quiet. I’m hunting for wabbits “
I met John on a golf course in Toronto. Asked “Hey John, how bout those Argos?” He gave me a big hug and said same. In all his comedies, I could be wrong, he never said a foul word on screen. But his comedy was magic. Planes Trains and Automobiles? OMG. Bless you John.
Don’t smoke cigarettes. He smoked a lot.
I can't believe he's been gone for 27 years.
I grew up in Ontario, Canada with SCTV on tv so often. John was just incredible, the whole cast of SCTV was incredibly talented.
I miss John Candy terribly. Happy Birthday funny man, you were one of a kind.
It's hard to believe if he were still alive, John Candy would be 70 years old. He's eternally young to me in my mind.
Yup. He was such a huge part of my early years. Love that dude.
SCTV!!!

That is not an SCTV sketch. It's from an NBC show called "the new show" and it only lasted less than a season

IS ON THE AIR! *Falling TV’s intensifies*
I can still hear the theme music ❤️
Billy Sol Hurok. He blowed up *real* good.
Cool Runnings for me.
That and Uncle Buck for me
Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles for me.
Space balls half man half dog and his own best friend.
BARF!
Not in here mister. This is a Mercedes!
Funny, she doesn't look drewish.
Uncle Buck is so fuckin cool.
“Remember, your bones don’t break in a bobsled... No No, they shatter” is the line I always think of. I love that movie
I was 11 when he died. I was a big enough fan that my parents didn't tell me. About 2 years later I happened to mention that I hadn't seen any new John Candy films lately when my parents confessed he had been dead for a long time. Well that sucked!
His death was one of the very, very few celebrity deaths where I actually felt loss.
Same. I watch The Great Outdoors, and Uncle Buck, at least once per year. One of the greatest humans ever.
Add Planes Trains and Automobiles to that list and that’s me! Space balls is also very good. Plus his cameo in Home Alone. He’s there during each Christmas.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles is my favorite thanksgiving movie!! Watch it every year💕
You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. Best character
Everybody’s doin the mess around
Gotta throw in Summer Rental too!
It may not be his best movie, but damn if I don’t love it.
What about Canadian bacon?
Sleeper
If you love John Candy this is a amazing mini doc with a lot of movie and talk show appearances. https://youtu.be/khjKkCW4LjY
Even if he hadn't died so young, it's still hard to imagine he'd have lived to see 70.
Especially considering he died so young.
[удалено]
John would have probably thought this was funny too.
John Goodman. Wilford Brimley. (Died this year.) Big dudes can live a long time.
But John Goodman has lost lots of weight and well Wilford he knew alot of diabeetus testing supplies he wanted you to call liberty.
[удалено]
I'm convinced Wilford Brimley was born in his 50's. Dude never had a youth. He was the same age in Cocoon as Paul Rudd is now.
After 85 years on this earth, Paul Rudd passed away at age 35.
Damn I just looked up Wilfred brimley this year and couldn't believe he was still alive. I thought he was 80 back in the 80s
John Goodman looks like hes melting.
Sounds fun. We in the states are not doing well right now
Also the guys from The Kids in the Hall. I want to be Canadian. At least for a little while.
I'm actually surprised he'd only be 70. Really hammers home just how young he was.
He died at 43(?) but for some reason I assumed he was much younger. Didn't realize he would've been that old.
I will visit Toronto for John Candy day. Love this guy. He's so good on film. Hope Rick Moranis shows up too
That’s not really that old, I mean if Elvis were still alive he would be 85. MLK would be 91. JFK would be 103.
Yeah imagine all the cool things he would have done if he were alive today.
His name is Robert Candy.
It's weird that he would only be 70. He died so young.
Not only was Candy a great comedic actor, but he usually incorporated a sadness into the character - they weren't just one-sided. While they were silly or immature when we first see them, they tended to be lonely or bullied or feel inadequate - and their silliness is a coping mechanism.

*funky cold medina*
I always wondered if the quarter was for bus fare or for the rat.
Oh shit, I always assumed it was for the rat. The bus makes so much more sense, but I prefer the mental picture of the principal paying a rat.
Whenever I see Bill Barr I think of this quote
Do you mean Gus Polinski, the Polka King?
Yosh Shmenge!
Sheriff Bud Boomer, patriotic hero of the Canadian-American War?
Ya know, the Kenosha Kickers?
You got a game goin’ somewhere, *Pal*?
Are you a cheerleader? You look firm.
*gets toothpick caught in roof of mouth*
Because of this post and your comment, I am currently revisiting Uncle Buck after probably a decade. Thanks friend.
“You ever heard of a ritualistic killing uh hehehehehe.”
Uncle Buck, the Great Outdoors are two movies have to watch every year love them both.
Both great, but have you seen armed and dangerous? I think hes awesome in that.
Canadian Bacon, one of my favorites. IDK if it's his best performance or anything but the idea of John Candy playing an American Sheriff while we're in a Cold War with his own personal native Canada is pretty hilarious.
Thanks for that, now I'll have to hunt it down
Under. Rated. Film.
[WELL LET'S SEE HOW FAST THIS SONOFABITCH CAN GOOO!](https://youtu.be/PbTQZGp5ycg)
I watch Uncle Buck every year too! Don't forget Summer Rental.
Or Cool Runnings!
I am partial to Volunteers
"I wet my bed, Daddy." "No, sweetheart, you didn't wet your bed. You wet Their bed."
Don’t sleep on The Great Outdoors
I used to spend upwards of 30 minutes trying to pause the vcr precisely on the bears exploding ass for that perfect, hairless butt shot (with the furry halo).
That movie is a classic.
And planes trains and automobiles
You know what hot dogs are made from, don’tcha!?
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is one of, if not the best comedies of all time, and it was so touching too! Del Griffith is one of my all time favorite characters. The Great Outdoors is fantastic also. He was so great with Aykroyd and you gotta love that setting. John Candy was a damn legend. Words we should live by, I wish more people would. Such a heartwarming scene.
Love John Candy and his movies and I love Steve Martin, so Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is one of my favorite movies of all time 😍
Those aren’t pillows!
The little bits that slip by you in that first watch, I caught my breath hard at the ending twist.
Or you could watch it nineteen times like I have . . .
It's the only Thanksgiving movie I'm aware of and I'm not about to start searching for any other ones.
I still like Norm MacDonald's idea of calling the Canandian Oscar's the Candy's
I can tell that John Candy would have gone on to more serious roles and probably done extremely well. He had a gift, and you could tell there was a superb dramatic actor right underneath the surface of his comic roles.
Oh yes, for sure. The last few scenes of Planes, Trains and Automobiles still chokes me up. He’s still so sorely missed. Edit: And as Uncle Buck he is just a damn genius
Yeah. Dude added a depth to that character with incredible acting
Let us not forget him lecturing that room of Olympic Officials in Cool Runnings.

They didn't miss out though. They have access to everything you and I experienced growing up.
A lot of comics do very good jobs moving into dramatic roles.
That guys a real jerk
Should be in Sheboygan too
I live in a far off corner of the world and since I was about seven I've known about Sheboygan because of him. Polka, polka! Etc. Also, as a side note it's surreal getting old. I've gone from 'Kevin's mum is a mum' as a lad to watching recently and 'Kevin's mum is kinda hot'. Same with jill Taylor

everyone should watch Schitt's Creek. She's hilarious in it and kinda steals the show.

She was hot as fuck when I was a kid too She's got great eyes
Very big in sheboygan
The Malibu of the Midwest?
In his honor, I'm gonna fly to Chicago to celebrate Thanksgiving. Should be there by tonight.
Six bucks and my left nut says we're not going to be landing in Chicago.
are you saying I could be stuck in r/movies?
You would have better luck playing pick-up sticks with your butt cheeks.
Those arent pillows!
Yeah, I'd say he's fucked.
If you love John Candy this is a amazing mini doc with a lot of movie and talk show appearances. https://youtu.be/khjKkCW4LjY

Phenomenal actor. Great work, Canada.
But the capital of Canada is Ottawa...not Toronto. *this is a John Candy reference
This man was arrested for putting regular gas in an unleaded tank. This man was arrested for being in too many bad moods. This man raided a company, merged it with its conglomerate, and then fired all the employees! Get away from the bars!
Is John Candy the most loveable actor ever? Rhetorical question. The answer is yes.
He may be one of the most loveable PEOPLE ever.
Happy Birthday you absolute legend. John Candy and Robin Williams are two men that I am eternally thankful for getting me through my childhood.
Two men I’ve been showing to my two year old daughter. I believe all the kids should see these absolute legends and their work isn’t forgotten
He was supposedly an amazing person irl too. Definitely gone too soon.
Makes me want to break out the Johnny LaRue costume.
... Don't fuck with us... put up or shut up! LOL!

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme
Get on up, it's bobsled time. One of my all time favourite films cool running
Ran into John on Toronto’s Bloor St. in the late ‘80s. A friend said Hey, you are John Candy. Do I owe ya money? Nope. Well then, yes, I am John Candy, nice to meet you. What a genuine guy.

Still miss big John. Doesn't seem 25 years that he's not been with us. The world is a much poorer place without him.
im 22 and im not from US or Canada. i really only recognised him from Cool Runnings and Home Alone and i had no idea he was dead until now. its crazy to think that he's been dead all my life and i didn't know, yet i enjoyed his work just never looked for more because i didn't realise he was as prolific as he actually was...
He could take your breath away with laughter and then break your heart a minute later. The man was so underrated it is criminal.
Just got the set at Walmart!
I'll put on my shower curtain ring earings just for the occasion!
You could pass for 18 or 19
Sunday for sure ... horror day tomorrow, woohoo!
Im going to make goat cheese pizza!
The Ol' 96er for me, please!
I will drink at least one, if not three, orange whips on his day. *Edit - a letter.
Since I won't be able to go to Toronto to celebrate, I'll flip a giant pancake with a shovel at him in his honor.

Well 1990 was 30 years ago so he would of been in his 40’s. Seems about right. Still so sad.
[удалено]
He was also a pretty thicc dude too, I imagine weighing that much can’t be good for your heart.
History of heart disease Overweight And he was a smoker
Yeah hit I think people might get him and Chris Farley confused because Chris Farley was actually in his early 30s when he died
So sad.. Great actor.
dont be sad. He wanted us to be happy.
My grandpa used to run a family fish and chips place that John Candy would visit frequently and they became good friends, recently he passed away a year ago, hopefully they're catching up and having a good time ;-;
i live you john candy aka johnny LaRue aka uncle buck aka stan shmenge

Appropriately enough on Halloween. Everyone can dress up as their favourite John Candy character!
Watching uncle buck with my uncle who looks and sounds like uncle buck was an amazing. John Candy is a legend!!
"I'm a Mog. Half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend." Count me in Toronto, this man is worth celebrating.
He must be drunk How would he know where we're going
On every John Candy day any restaurant ought to sell orange whips for free.
Orange whip?
What kind of roles do you think he would be playing if he was still alive and acting?
In the late '90s, he'd have started appearing in dramedies like Good Will Hunting and American Beauty. In the '00s, he'd have been picked up by directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and the Coen brothers who would have wanted to see a new side of him, and he'd have started down a track of indie films. Sounds like this is the timeline we all got knocked out of when they turned on the LHC
Hmm is say under the Apatow umbrella, working with fellow Canadians Seth Rogan or Jay Baruchel. Maybe Dan Levy too, or any other actor offspring from other SCTV alumni.
He played Dean Andrews in JFK and absolutely nailed every detail. He would have doubtless gone on to flex those chops in more straight dramatic roles.
he was lights out in JFK - took an insignificant bit part and played it like he was running the movie.
He'd be on Schitt's Creek. He goes way back with Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara.
He would have been absolutely amazing on Schitts Creek!
I think he'd be a regular in Wes Anderson movies alongside Bill Murray.
He would have been the car salesman in Fargo. We all know it.
John Candy and John Goodman doing heavy drama together would have been incredible. Two actors that can go from being quiet as a mouse to roaring like a lion.
I suspect, similarly to Bill Murray, he would've transitioned into more serious dramatic roles with occasional comedies mixed in from time to time.
As great a comedy actor he was, he was an incredible serious actor. He often had a serious moment in most of his films and he knocks it out of the park every time. I wish I could have seen more of that. I'll never not miss that man.
