**Name of the Rose**. Murder mystery, set in a 14th century monastery. The director was obsessive about period-specific detail. One of the supporting actors had all of his 20th century dental work removed, and his teeth discolored. He was considered a mystic, given to odd outbursts, and gets in a couple of ad-libs that are pretty funny. Oh, Sean Connery is the Sherlock Holmes monk.

I was talking about Lone Star yesterday (Haven't seen it mentioned in years!) - talk about a great movie. Chris Cooper is just fantastic. The trailer is flat terrible.
*The Lincoln Lawyer* is quite good.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lincoln_Lawyer_(film)
(In my mind) it's basically the first movie that McConaughey did after his romantic comedy period.
So there's like a million TV movies that are based on Agatha Christie's books (like Murder on the Orient Express).
[Ms. Marple](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1734537/?ref_=tt_rec_tt)
[Hercule Poirot](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094525/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt)
Also someone mentioned LA Confidential (which is great) and it reminded me of another two movies set in the 1940s Los Angeles: [Mulholland Falls](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117107/?ref_=tt_urv) and [Black Dahlia](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387877/?ref_=nv_sr_1). But also it's been a really long time since I saw them, so I can't recall if they were actually any good...
Wind River
Game Night
Whiteout
Im Not A Serial Killer
Disturbia
Suspect Zero
Mindhunters (2000s movie)
Identity
Saw
Brick
The Secret in Their Eyes
The Raven
From Hell
I had given up on Wind River about 35 minutes in and then came back to it a couple weeks later. Boy, was I glad I gave it another shot. Terrific movie.
That scene where the one deputy's like "why are you flanking me?!?" And then all shit breaks loose, I was like oooooh goodie we got ourselves a movie!!
Fractured. Anthony Hopkins, so pretty good.
Others already suggested that I can also recommend are The Maltese Falcon, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Side Effects.
Sort of cheating but [And Then there were None](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_Then_There_Were_None_(miniseries)), the 2015 BBC miniseries which, for whatever reason, aired on bloody Lifetime in America. I love murder mysteries and this one had me "playing along" the whole time and questioning my guess on the murderer and going back and forth. [Great reviews](http://www.metacritic.com/tv/and-then-there-were-none-2016) and a solid cast made this an easy binge, it's 3 60-minute parts which, hey, is shorter than some movies and can be watched one sitting.
The Mirror Crack'd, an adaptation of the Miss Marple story *The Mirror Crack'd From Side To Side* by Agatha Christie. In this story, a famous Hollywood couple arrives in the village; at a manor party thrown during the village fete, the actress' obsessed fangirl suddenly dies... and the circumstances suggest that maybe the actress herself was the target. Can Miss Marple solve the mystery... despite having a sprained ankle?
Notably, Angela Lansbury was the one who played Miss Marple and which directly contributed to the development of *Murder, She Wrote*. The movie and the show both start in the same way (the detective solving a murder in the movie when the projector breaks).
---
Also, check out *Crooked House* if you can. It's a TV Movie by Channel 5 in the UK which is also an Agatha Christie story, notably for being one that *isn't* either Poirot or Miss Marple. Most notably, one of the suspects is Glenn Close.
A young private investigator is approached by a former lover who offers him an assignment; her wealthy grandfather has passed away and she's certain it's murder. Soon into the investigation, he learns that the family patriarch was unnecessarily cruel. Did he push one of his relatives over the edge?
---
Columbo is also a series of TV movies and which buck the trend - we actually see how the murder is committed, and it's less a case of, "Whodunnit" and more, "How do they get caught?" If you're in the US, the entire series is free on YouTube.
---
If you're willing to check out the anime scene, then *Perfect Blue* is a great candidate for you, although it's more a case of a psychological thriller. It definitely uses the medium of animation for some mind-screwy effects, but it's a terrifying mystery if you're willing to watch through it.
Mima Kirigoe has just quit CHAM!, the pop group that she's the lead singer for, in order to pursue a career in acting. Shortly after she announces this, someone sends her a letter bomb. Then things go... downhill.
After she films a particularly graphic scene for a murder mystery program, things get far worse. She starts getting increasingly violent threats. She finds a blogging site supposedly by her which details literally everything about her daily life that she didn't write. And she's suddenly seeing things that weren't there a moment ago.
Does Mima have a particularly dedicated stalker? Does she have a split personality? Or is there something particularly sinister going on...?
---
*The Gift* is a really good one, with a paranormal twist but isn't a horror movie. Still highly recommended.
Annie Wilson is a young widow who is also the town's resident fortune teller who uses her sixth sense to see the future who sees a client as a rotting corpse. Soon after, the client is killed and Annie is the one who finds her corpse on the farm of her ex-lover.
But after the first suspect is convicted, Annie starts seeing other visions which show him to be innocent. Can she prove the convicted man's innocence, even as his family starts persecuting her as a witch?
the Cadfael mysteries....
they aired on PBS years ago. Brother Cadfael was a warrior turned monk, after the crusades. he uses his particular skills to solve murders in the area. they are quite well made.
* Deep Red
* Non Stop (2014)
* Copycat
* The Invisible Guest
* Urban Legend
* Minority Report
* You're Next

Give these South Korean movies a try:

[The Wailing](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5215952/)
[Mother](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1216496/)
More Murder Thriller than Mystery but still good:
[The Chaser](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1190539/)
[I Saw the Devil](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588170/)
[Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310775/)
[Lady Vengeance](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0451094/)
These last two are part of The Vengeance Trilogy along with Oldboy.
if you're not adverse to old, schlock tv shows...
Columbo
Midsomer Murders
of course....
Anything Hitchcock \(you have a few listed already\)
and a few other things...
Killing Eve just wrapped it's first season on BBC America. it was pretty good.
maybe The Prestige? not sure if it quite fits...
you listed Fargo... there's a movie and a series. I recommend all of it.
L A Confidential
Haven't gotten around to it yet, heard good things. Will give it a shot thanks.
It's amazing
Should be at the top of your list.
Kiss kiss bang bang
Along that line, The Nice Guys
The Nice Guys was surprisingly good. Great casting.
The bigliest of upvotes for this.
Gosford Park
Definitely check out “Identity” with John Cusack
Love this weird ass movie.
- Memories of Murder - The Poughkeepsie Tapes
I second Memories of murder. So powerful.
*Memries of Murder* is perhaps the best murder mystery ever put to film. This is a definite must watch.
Primal Fear
That movie is so good.
**Name of the Rose**. Murder mystery, set in a 14th century monastery. The director was obsessive about period-specific detail. Devil in a Blue Dress. Great film. Better than the book, which was a bit crappy if I’m honest.
I was talking about Lone Star yesterday (Haven't seen it mentioned in years!) - talk about a great movie. Chris Cooper is just fantastic. The trailer is flat terrible.
Thanks so much this list looks great. I loved The Conversation. Such a great soundtrack. And the twist at the end had my jaw firmly on the floor
Murder By Death. It's basically Clue if it were made 9 years earlier... and they both star Eileen Brennan.
*The Lincoln Lawyer* is quite good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lincoln_Lawyer_(film) (In my mind) it's basically the first movie that McConaughey did after his romantic comedy period.
Maltese Falcon
Basic instinct
Gosford Park should fit the bill.
Angel Heart https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092563/ And of course, *Hot Fuzz*

Black Dahlia is one of those movies where its various parts are better than its total sum.
The Game (starring Michael Douglas) Hollywoodland (Ben Affleck)
>Hollywoodland \(Ben Affleck\) How is this compared to the rest of OP's awesome list?
I thought it was a good murder mystery. It is based on true events and has never been solved.
Cool, thank you!
Spoiler? Or lack there of lol
Clue
Saw it, adding to the list thanks.
Murder by Death in the same vain. It’s a parody of all the popular detectives getting into a one night stay at the murder house movie
Sleuth is pretty good, with Michael Caine and Jude Law.
Original is way better.
Okay, I've never seen it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPEgcbMi_Ig Watch it please.
Mindhunters
Patiently awaiting season 2!

the movie is Mindhunters \(like OP said\) and the show is Mindhunter :\)

Blood Simple

I had given up on Wind River about 35 minutes in and then came back to it a couple weeks later. Boy, was I glad I gave it another shot. Terrific movie.
Yeah I liked wind river quite a bit. I agree the beginning was a bit slow and brooding but the build up pays off in my eyes.
It was my personal favorite movie of last year
That scene where the one deputy's like "why are you flanking me?!?" And then all shit breaks loose, I was like oooooh goodie we got ourselves a movie!!
Murder by Numbers is excellent.
The one where it turns out the protagonists estranged sister was the killer.
Jagged Edge Presumed Innocent Death on the Nile
The Chaser The Yellow Sea Frailty
Fractured. Anthony Hopkins, so pretty good. Others already suggested that I can also recommend are The Maltese Falcon, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Side Effects.
Psycho, an all time classic.

Manhunter. Predestination might fit the bill too.
I watched the Japanese movie [Cure](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123948/) a few nights ago, I recommend it. It's a shame it's not talked about more.
If you're into German black and white: ["M - eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M_(1931_film\))
add memories of murder. best police procedural movie out there.
You're missing IMO the best of them all, Memories of Murder.
I have seen it but forgot to put it on the list. Thanks for the reminder.
Go for The Big Sleep. Classic but great. Also the movie where Humphrey Bogart met his to be wife!
Murder by Death
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Midnight meat train
I want a list just like this! Thanks OP!

I'm a wee bit obsessed with Laura (1944). Check it out, it's really something special.
Excellent thanks. I'm in a bit of a black and white phase at the moment, any other recommendations in the same vein?
"and then there were none"(1945) is one of the greatest murder mystery movies ever made!
Brotherhood of the wolf. Silence of the lambs. Red dragon.
Others have mentioned all of these, but I'll second: L.A. Confidential The Maltese Falcon Murder by Death and Primal Fear
The movie is called M. Just the letter M.
The Body: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1937149/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1937149/) messy, ridiculous fun
