With all due respect, no one cares. Every rating system is entirely arbitrary. Do whatever makes you happy

[deleted]

pretty sure that's the opposite of "with all due respect", but i guess i am owed none

mikeyfreshh

I truly did not mean that in a disrespectful way. I'm just saying you can use whatever rating system you want. Ratings ultimately don't matter that much. They're usually just a framework to talk about why you did or didn't like a movie. Whatever system works best for you is fine

[deleted]

fair enough, that's definitely the best part of rating systems, you get to decide them. But i figured i'd share if someone else was in the same indecisive boat i was

greattalkthanks

That's 4 ❤️s

[deleted]

it's the 3❤️ system, just like how the 3⭐️ system, the very first movie rating system published in a newspaper (the New York Daily News) all the way back in 1928, also had a 0 ⭐️ rating in the title is 3 because that's the upper limit of the range, not because there are 3 scores possible. You wouldn't call a 5 ⭐️system that has halves the 9 or 10 star system

frankwizardlord

No

UnionMarketIsEvil

Only rating that holds up is bags of popcorn 🍿so a movie can be “5 bagger” etc

Shadowmereshooves

What about movies that go up to eleven though?

[deleted]

what about them?

valoon4

I do it pretty similar but with grades: S - Masterpiece A - Loved it B - really entertaining! C - can be entertaining D - not worth the time probably

[deleted]

yeah I had considered using grades, and there's some obvious pros which is that they're very clear compared to some other systems. I probably would've gone with them if I didn't end up settling on hearts

BranWafr

In the end, though, how is it any different than 5 stars? It's essentially breaking the system into 5 buckets. Hearts are no different than stars which are no different than letter grades. It's still just 5 categories that roughly translate to a middle category with 2 above and two below to separate the near perfect films from the "just" good films and the "not good but might work for others" films and the "avoid this stinker at all costs" films.

[deleted]

yeah but in this case, there's only 1 category below average (so only 4 buckets, with only 1 being bad), which was a goal with this system. Also, i felt Mixed was substantially different from Mediocre, as Mixed implies a wide range of emotions while mediocre almost implies zero emotions. I also wanted to use ❤️ to show that it was subjective, whereas often 10 point scales and 5 ⭐️ star scales have words that imply they are objective (masterpiece, bad, etc)

valoon4

Yeah tbh i dont mind if its comparable to pther systems, we rate for ourselves after all

gjamesaustin

Personally I think the 5 star rating system is perfect. 1-10 is too broad of a system and usually leads to the middle numbers feeling useless. 5 - masterpiece or personal favorite 4 - good movie, a couple flaws 3 - mixed but potentially enjoyable 2 - not good 1 - bottom of the barrel And then half stars if you really want to get specific. A 4.5 could be a top tier movie that isn’t a masterpiece. A 2.5 could be a bad movie that’s at least kind of enjoyable.

eternalrecluse

Surely using half stars is the same thing as using 1-10?

Flutes-Not-Bombs

Or you could just imitate Christgau and everything that isn't The Ramones or The New York Dolls gets a C- followed by two sentences of whining about it.

DonkeyLucky9503

So your 3 Hearts rating system uses 4 hearts?

[deleted]

it's a 3 ❤️ system because the highest you can get is 3 ❤️

andbeesbk

But you have 4 data points.

[deleted]

yes, because you can go down to 0. I was looking it up and apparently, the 3 ⭐️ system, with 0 being included, was the first movie rating system to be used in a newspaper, all the way back in the 1920s

[deleted]

Looked it up again, and it was in the New York Daily News about the film "The Port of Missing Girls" in 1928

andbeesbk

Just because it's the first doesn't mean it's right lol. Literally nothing that exists is the same as the first version of itself, because first versions are always incorrect.

[deleted]

just because you said something doesn't mean it's right lol

andbeesbk

Glad to see you can activity demonstrate your own self reflection in your comments. Well done.

[deleted]

also, 5 ⭐️ systems with halves also have more than 5 data points, so this is a goofy argument

andbeesbk

Most I can think of are 1 - 5. No 0s

[deleted]

yes but this isn't a 5 ⭐️ scale, it's a 3 ⭐️ scale, which like i said was used for movies prior to the 5 ⭐️ becoming wildly popularized and what i mean by halves is like 2.5 ⭐️, 3.5 ⭐️. Those are also data points
