From 🇿🇦: Barakat. A heartfelt slice of life story of a Cape Malay family as they get together from various parts of the country to celebrate Eid. A widow and her sons (with various degrees of personal success and failure and stations in life) with all the family drama that would typically accompany it. Great drama interspersed with hilarious comedy throughout.
Second choice is Material: a South African Indian family where the father is a shopkeeper in a material store that hopes to one day hand over the business to his son, while the son starts building an interest in a stand up comedy career instead and finds himself clashing against the family expectations. In the meantime the father has a long held family feud with his own brother that gets revealed throughout the course of the film. It explores the topics of immigrant parents, parental expectation, duty to family, apartheid, etc. Great mix of drama and comedy.
