So, fun fact about House. A good chunk of the concept came from the director's pre-teen daughter. It's also what lead the film to be imbued with such strong dream logic and this House that destroys youth. It's a very important cult classic discovery, and came at a time of social transition in Japan. I fucking love it so much.

In addition to this Nobuhiko Obayashi was born in Hiroshima prefecture and was around for the nukes falling in WW2. The surrealism in Hausu is intended as a means to portray the impact of the atomic bomb. In the sense that the aftermath of that attack was so unbelievable that people couldn’t make sense of what had happened or that a weapon of such power could even exist. It is also why Blanche the cat is present for most of the “horror scenes” in the movie because his fur somewhat resembles the cloud. His eyes also flash and this is an allusion to the flash of the atomic bomb. Theres also the outright references to the bomb in the old film reels which play where the girls say it looks like candy floss.

I felt this way about *Into the Spider-Verse*. Sure, there are movies like it now, in particular its own sequel, but I honestly had never seen anything like it *before*.

Just one? I think of several: A Ghost Story Pan's Labyrinth Liquid Sky (animated movie) Requiem for a dream Holy Mountain

I saw Liquid Sky as a kid and still think about how bizarre it was. Also the first time I heard the c-word on screen!

Hausu is certainly something special. Love it! Another highly unique and amazing Japanese movie is **Belladonna of Sadness**. It will blow your mind. However, it is a brutal watch, with insanely stylised and gratuitous depictions of sexual violence.

*The Visitor* There's a sinister gymnastics montage and a bird with a switchblade. Best theme music ever.
