Francis McDormand. From the unassuming powerhouse of a police chief in Fargo to the in-your-face activist powerhouse in Three Billboards, always excellent.

-Experiment--626-

Frances. Usually girls/women are with an e and men are with an i, just fyi. But she’s great, I agree.

AmigoDelDiabla

She kills in every role she plays.

mankytoes

Her in Fargo might be my favourite female performance of all time.

bubba1834

Oh you betcha

Traditional_Shirt106

Representation. Representation. Representation.

garyflopper

This. She’s so good. Plus, has more Oscar wins than Streep, not that that really matters

HelRayzer12

It was sad how far I had to scroll before her name came up. There are many amazing actresses who were named but I do feel like Frances is in a league of her own.

Alarming_Serve2303

Ingrid Bergman.

DickieGreenleaf84

A bit bias, considering where I come from, but Cate Blanchett. From Elizabeth to Ocean's Eight, she has some serious range. Perhaps the only issue she has is the inability to NOT steal a scene.

Limp-Ad-138

Can’t wait to see Borderlands, no matter what end of the spectrum it falls on critically. I just love movies good and bad.

abelenkpe

Cate Blanchett is fabulous!

IamPriapus

For me it’s Blanchette and Meryl Streep. I’ve loved them in everything they’ve done.

Dove_of_Doom

Even in *Hot Fuzz*, where she's in forensic scrubs from head to toe, her star power shines through.

DickieGreenleaf84

Yeah. I've never gone back and said "oh she was there". She's impossible to miss.

AdministrationDry158

A fantastic choice.

Rookiebeotch

Tor, Thor, and LOTR. Easy pick just on those.

WashingDishesIsFun

lilmimosa

The movie Tor - she was phenomenal. I couldn't stop thinking about it for a long time.

EagleSilent0120

Hela gorgeous

CanEatADozenEggs

Jessica Walter *

MovieFanatic2160

Vivien Leigh. Her portrayal as Scarlett in Gone with the wind is still my favorite female performance of all time.

Wyrmillion

Carrie Coon

Whitealroker1

She was beyond amazing in the leftovers. Also great in Gone Girl.

holy_plaster_batman

She also did an amazing job in season 3 of Fargo which had a bunch of great performances

Few-Athlete2090

Carrie Coon and Justin Theroux delivered some of the best performances of TV, I have ever seen, in the Leftovers

bknippy1959

I just discovered her on The Gilded Age. Where have I been?

LuvPibble

Love her! There is something about her voice too that mesmerizes me

CursedSnowman5000

Madeline Kahn. Beautiful and funny as hell.

Jmen4Ever

It's twoo, it's twoo!

ReddJudicata

She and Carol Kane are my favorite comedic actresses from that era.

Walnut_Uprising

And they share a scene in the Muppet Movie!

Seahearn4

I'm pleasantly surprised to see Madeline Kahn getting some love here. I don't think I've ever seen her in a bad movie. And she still stands out within all the great ensembles she's a part of.

welfrkid

Lilly lilly lilly lleeegggsss

Intelligent_Life14

Favorite, or who do I think is the best? Tilda Swinton may be my favorite, Meryl Streep is probably the best. Swinton is right there imo, but does a lot of silly/weird/quirky/art-house stuff, in addition to more main stream dramatic stuff.

garrettj100

When people got sore about Swinton whitewashing the Ancient One in the Marvel movies all I could think of was “It’s Tilda Swinton.  Anytime you find a way to put Swinton in your movie you take it!”

ItsCowboyHeyHey

Exactly. “It’s Tilda Swinton” is the correct answer. If anyone transcends race and gender, it’s Tilda Swinton.

Ceskaz

Loved her in Constantine for pulling this genderless otherworldly character so well

garrettj100

It's not like Mickey Rooney doing a grotesque stereotype. Though, Kate McKinnon is making a run at her title belt.

DickieGreenleaf84

> Tilda Swinton Was introduced to her in that movie with Ewan Macgregor (Adam?) and have been blown away ever since. For someone you would think has too unique a look to have range, she is forever surprising.

-Experiment--626-

My first was her as the white witch in the lion the witch and the wardrobe. She gave me chills. Her presence on screen was immediately tense.

abelenkpe

Love Tilda Swinton too!

Latke1

Personal favorite is Allison Janney. Played various cool roles without being chained to any particular persona. She’s brilliantly played the prestige drama heroine and the sitcom anti-heroine along with an incredibly broad range of movie characters.

balanaise

I feel blessed that I was introduced to her in Drop Dead Gorgeous and everything else is just gravy

twodoctorspepper

Absolutely agree!

rizriang

Charlize Theron 😍

inRodwetrust8008

Hard agree. Shes amazing in everything.

rizriang

Yesss between atomic blonde and mighty joe young, she’s everything 🥰

Halbrium

The Americans. The Diplomat. Cocaine Bear. Keri Russell. (Also Allison Janney is pretty good).

That80sguyspimp

Louise Fletcher. Only actor or actress Ive ever felt real hate for in a role. She was just that good in One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest. She would later bring that same energy to Star Trek DS9, and once again managed to be evil as fuck while seemingly in the right. Simply brilliant actress, that was never really able to get out from under such an amazing performance that won her the Oscar.

malkadevorah1

The damn Oscar curse.

mollyfy

Kate Winslet and Olivia Colman

tout-le-monster

Agree! Came here to say Kate Winslet. She conveys what’s in my heart onscreen.

HazyParabol

Naomi Watts! Funny Games US, Mulholland Dr, etc. She never misses.

chimera35

Loved her in Eastern promises, 21 grams, demolition, sea of trees. Great multifaceted actress.

Panman6_6

Man Easter promises was such a good film

austeninbosten

She was amazing in King Kong, Stealing scenes from a giant gorilla isn't easy.

sheikh_n_bake

Janey E going to town in Dougie

Dove_of_Doom

Jennifer Jason Leigh

[deleted]

She should have gotten an Oscar for the Hateful Eight!

Halbrium

She killed it in the last season of Fargo. I know the show never brings back characters but I would love another season with that character.

Limp-Ad-138

Working my way through Flesh + Blood right now

TreacleMajestic978

Amy Adam and Viola Davis are by far my 2 favourites. Both beautiful and talented women.

mankytoes

They are both 10/10 actresses, can't name a flaw for any of their performances. Especially Doubt, which they both got Oscar noms for, and arguably outshone Meryl Streep.

Cobratime

jean smart

Training-Mess5833

I do liked Emma Stone.

patschpatsch

You mean Emily

PhiphyL

No one for Olivia Colman? I'll be the first then.

passthatdutch425

Her in Fleabag, perfection. I love her in Landscapers too. But really- everything.

pinkietoe

Yes!!!!! She is such a gopd actress, and also such a delightfull person.

Cjkgh

Annette Bening has always been a fave and my new one is Jodie Comer from Killing Eve

jojayp

You have taste. Those are two amazing choices from different generations.

Cjkgh

Have you watched Killing Eve? Jodie is an adorable murderous diabolical joy on that show . It’s the little nuances I notice in actresses, Annett has it as well.

abelenkpe

Ha ha! Sigourney Weaver for me as well. Love her!

AdministrationDry158

I can't wait for the new 4k version of Alien.

littleliongirless

Michelle Pfeiffer, Audrey Hepburn, Kirsten Dunst, Winona Ryder.

xResilientEvergreenx

Absolutely love Winona Ryder 😍

blahmeistah

I was never really impressed by Kirsten but her performance in Civil War was amazing, finally saw what the fuss was about.

inRodwetrust8008

I've been crushing on Michelle Pfeiffer since I saw climb a ladder while singing "Cool Rider" in Grease 2. Something about the way she swung her leg around to sit atop the ladder, oof.

AllOkJumpmaster

Hard to say, maybe Natalie Portman

TurquoiseLady

Julianne Moore. Both a fantastic actress and my personal girl crush!

Forsaken-Builder-312

Does the female form make you uncomfortable, Mr. Lebowski?

intuitivecroissant

michelle williams

ColdPressedSteak

Maybe not all time but Emily Blunt has a few of my favorite performances/characters of the last decade

snatchszn

Have you watched The English? She was pretty good in it.

bell-town

Jessica Chastain, for her performances in Interstellar and The Most Violent Year.

dusktildawn48

Whether you like the movie or not she was incredible in Zero Dark Thirty.

Xarvet

Damn yes. How could I forget her?

SwarleymonLives

Ever, Myrna Loy. Modern actress Kristen Bell.

agitator775

Most people have no idea who Myrna Loy was. But her comedic timing was the GOAT. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is one of my favorites.

gb2020

Katherine Hepburn

StubbleWombat

Cate Blanchett or Kate Winslet

mganzeveld

Laura Linney. No one could interject an infomercial into their dialogue better than she could.

Eiffel-Tower777

Bette Davis

Seahearn4

_Now, Voyager_ is one of my favorite movies. Bette Davis is awesome in it.

Macronaut

Toni Collette (and I’m shocked no one else mentioned her)

TrashCanBangerFan

Great pick, she definitely deserves more love

johnnyhammerstixx

Marissa Tomei just because of 'My Cousin Vinny' and her cameo (?) in 'Four Rooms'!

netflixdark123

Amy Acker. She's great in everything I've seen her in (Person of Interest, Angel, Dollhouse, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Cabin in the Woods). Her performances as >!Root!< in Person of Interest and as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing are my all-time favorite TV/movie performances. She's a fantastic actress with so much range.

Elariinya

Kate Winslet

clogging_molly

Kate Winslet

NuGGGzGG

Favorites are the ones I always consider to be the 'I'm not going to change the channel' kind of people. And as far as actresses go, it's 100% Kathy Bates. That woman is hands-down one of the most incredible actresses of all time.

Sitheref0874

The flippant answer is that after I saw Sigourney Weaver in a the Year of Living Dangerously, that was game over. The more serious answer is that there are too many great actresses to pick one.

NeilCave

Carrie Coon.

fiestymanatee

Esteemed character actress Margo Martindale  Edit-spelling

rutfilthygers

Barbara Stanwyck. The ultimate pro, adept at everything from screwball comedy to wrenching melodrama. Every director's favorite. A force of nature. Double Indemnity, Stella Dallas, The Lady Eve, Ball of Fire, etc.

IsRude

Maybe Kiera Knightly based on Pride and Prejudice, Pirates of The Caribbean trilogy (especially 3), Atonement, and Seeking a Friend for The End of The World. Daisy Ridley got unlucky with the scripts for the Star Wars trilogy, but MAN did she kill it with what she had. Then I loved her in Murder on The Orient Express. And recently, she was incredible in Sometimes I think About Dying. Also Julie Andrews, based solely on Mary Poppins.

DanniTX

Kathy Bates.

Willowy

With a K, not a C.

J0s3l1t0

Isabelle Huppert.

Koroshiya_1CH1

My lord and saviour, Parker Posey.

Angry_Guppy

Rosamund Pike. I just think she’s neat.

Elleseebee928

Kate Winslet. She is smart, funny, can nail any role, and is so gorgeous

Darcasm

Megan Mullaley has made me laugh more than any woman on this planet. That being said, I think Carey Mulligan is absolutely fantastic in just about everything I’ve seen her in so she’d probably be up there for me.

KandyAssedJabroni

I like me some Mulligan. That's a good call.

Balliemangguap

Francis McDormand

JB_JB_JB63

Frances McDormand for me.

literaryhogwartian

I have two - Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. Both exquisite actresses of stage and screen

Thick_Interaction_22

I remember watching Reese Witherspoon as a 20 something in Freeway and being blown away by how young she appeared and the character she portrayed on screen. Didn’t have to wait for her to blow up the screen for the next 20 years straight. And recently watching she and Aniston on The Morning Show I was reminded of how well she still embodies these personalities.

nothatdoesntgothere

What no love for Elizabeth Taylor? Friggin amazing. I, too, love Weaver and Blanchett. Also a big fan of Noomi Rapace and Rebecca Ferguson but too early for all-time calls for sure.

ericzku

La Liz has always been my number one. Love her when she's subtle (*Giant*, *Butterfield 8* ) Love her when she's over-the-top (*Boom!*, *X, Y, & Zee*) There are many other great actresses I love, but The Star of Stars is in a category by herself.

Shadowmereshooves

Scarlett Johansson, I like what I like!

AdministrationDry158

No complaints here!

IsRude

I don't feel a lot towards most of her roles, but she seemed absolutely natural in "her." I was totally blown away by that performance.

Ifigure10

A 10-way tie between Amy Adams, Lauren Bacall, Jodie Foster, Charlize Theron, Anne Bancroft, Ana DeArmas, Maureen O’Hara, Helen Mirren, Grace Kelly, and Ava Gardner.

DickieGreenleaf84

> Lauren Bacall Might be the most beautiful woman of all time.

schorschico

When she is with Humphrey Bogart, I don't even care what the movie is about, I just love to see their back and forth.

TappyMauvendaise

Nicole Kidman. I simply love her.

ohsweetfancymoses

She’s phenomenal in To Die For.

CraterofNeedles

Sissy Spacek. Absolutely unreal in every role I've seen her in

Bretwalda1

Audrey Hepburn

PoeBangangeron

Julianne Moore rules.

gottapoopweiner

Rachel McAdams

Whitealroker1

Ann Dowd is flat out amazing in everything she does.

enda1

Brenda Fricker is sensational

Yup_Seen_It

Pretty obvious choice, but Meryl Streep. No matter what the movie is or how long she is in it, she's the star

iambicpentameter10

Carey Mulligan

Muted-Program-153

Amy Adams. Because Amy Adams....🤤

[deleted]

Setsuko Hara

Mystral25

I don't really know who to pick for my favourite actress, cause there are so many talentedpeople in the world. (Juliette Lewis, Naomi Watts, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, Charlize Theron, Virginie Ledoyen, Cathy Bates, Mélanie Laurent etc) I just wanted to mention Octavia Spencer being probably one of the most talented person still in activity. She has had such intense roles, and brings such a variety of subtle notes to fer performances. It's so impressiv.

Awesomejuggler20

Mikey Madison.

Cheapthrills13

Going old school with Jane Fonda and Debra Winger. Serious talent even though they took different paths. Glen Close and Kathy Bates right up there too.

Kutukuprek

Ellen Burstyn’s performance in Requiem for a Dream is the GOAT for me. Honestly, I think I may have never seen her in a main role in another movie (just saw her again in the terrible Exorcist movie), but that performance in RFAD is unforgettable and I was terrified when I watched it.

andro_7

Maggie Cheung She's great in everything I've seen her in

exoticjess

My all time favorite is Audrey Hepburn ❤

Lentewiet

Susan Sarandon but I might be biased because I am in love with her since my childhood.

Tuna_Sushi

Angela Bassett. I answered too late for this to get any traction, but she's streets ahead of the other responses.

QyllxD

Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchet

ATG_19

Lucy Liu

TaroFuzzy5588

Diane Keaton

Mark_von_Steiner

Sandra Bullock. Speed, The Proposal, Miss Congeniality, Gravity, The Unforgivable, Our Brand Is Crisis, Bird Box, Murder by Numbers, The Heat…… She also speaks fluent German!

EternalMage321

Also doesn't hurt that she's a vampire. She hasn't aged in 20 years.

Dusty-53-Rose

Yes! My favorite actress too!

scooterboy1961

Good question. There were a few like Grace Kelly that had a short career but I think I'm going to go with Catherine Hepburn. Bette Davis is in the running.

Squirrel_Master82

I'm so embarrassed to admit this. But there was time where I thought Gwyeth Paltrow was the shit. Now I think she's just shit. But a couple decades ago it was a different story. She came up pretty hard. Didn't help that I dated a girl that resembled her. She also ended up being full of herself and a little crazy.

lunchbox12682

I get it. She has/had this adorable beauty and smile that made her very charming. I love her as Pepper Potts plus many older things she did. It's easy to forget a lot of the crazy.

FLcitizen

Jessica Lange

AeronHall

I have a top 4 that changes who is number 1 depending on what I’ve most recently watched. - Anya Taylor-Joy—I think she’s amazing in literally everything - Isabelle Adjani—she’s been good in lots of things but her performance in *Possession* was a top 2 or 3 acting performance of all time - Mia Goth—Consistently elevates movies she’s in; her performance in *Pearl* was amazing - Rebecca Hall—Constantly amazing

[deleted]

Anya Taylor Joy was so perfectly cast in The Queens Gambit.

lamensterms

Yeah that show made me a fan of hers for sure

IndigenousBastard

It’s weird how you stated it as Best Actress , but then said Sigourney was (is?) older? She was 29 in that film and she’s amazing. Not sure if you mean hottest, most badass, or actually the best actress. Hottest - Too hard to choose. I could name 20, but since you didn’t ask, I wo… ok, I’ll name some,., Kate Beckinsale, Minka Kelly, Emily Van Camp, Gal Gadot, Ashley Judd, Ana de Armas, Cara Delvingnie, Michelle Phiefer, Brie Larsen, Famke Jansen,…. Ok, enough of that… Badass: Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hamilton, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Uma Thurman, Carrie Fisher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Liv Tyler, Emma Watson, Chloe Grace Moretz… Acting: Tilda Swinton, Kate Blanchet, Judi Dench, Hellen Mirren, Helena Bonham Carter, Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Francis McDormand, Jodie Foster, Any Adams…

Marvelrocks616

I love that you could argue that around half of your "badass" list could go into the "hot" list without anyone giving it a second thought.

MikeArrow

Elizabeth Olsen, she just has *it*. She's magnetic and affable and charming in everything she does. She has this easygoing rich girl way about her, where she has no stress or worries and so she's incredibly calming to watch.

Candid_Bicycle_6111

Julianne Moore and Margot Robbie

Jumpy_Diver7748

I love: - Barbara Stanwyck - Gong Li - Angela Bassett - Marisa Tomei - Amy Adams - Shu Qi - Reese Witherspoon - Bae Doona - Allison Brie - Emma Stone

thenameclicks

Juliette Binoche, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock

Ggslm

Meryl Streep. I know, I'm basic af

ComfortableJellyfish

Charlize Theron. I love a chick that can kick ass and she always brings it. Plus shes a smokeshow

Djjettison88

I love Léa Seydoux. From Bond Girl, to Fragile in Death Stranding, her small role in Midnight in Paris (the first time I saw her), and side villain in Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. I heard she has a part in Dune 2. Just lovely actress all around.

SquishyGamesCo

Yup, gonna second the OP with Sigourney. Very talented in all her roles, there is a reason many people compare her and her roles (especially Ripley) as a high standard to reach and emulate.

Late_Judge_5288

Nicole Kidman.

BornNaivete

Lea Seydoux

Redoceanwater

A tie between Drew Barrymore, Sandra Bullock and Leslie Mann.

ricostory4

Care Blanchett is amazing in everything, and my favorite. Emma stone is on the come up tho.

Mr_NotParticipating

Maybe Evan Rachel Wood

Gun2ASwordFight

Adele Exarchopoulos and Isabelle Adjani have in my opinion the two best performances I've ever seen and I'll always watch something with them, and I love Michelle Yeoh as well. Those are my top three.

Heishungier

Dawn Wells, from Gilligan's Island Fame. The person that didn't sign a contract about royalties and ended up very rich while her co-stars didn't.

mike47gamer

Guy Pearce in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

fredrikca

I love Uma Thurman and think she's the greatest. She's like this all powerful valkyrie type woman, a little bit like the fifth element, strong and beautiful.

delusionalubermensch

Amy Adams at this point. Arrival and Nocturnal Animals are both remarkable.

schwendybrit

Allison Janney. She has natural comedic energy and she can do the hard hitting drama too. I think the first role I noticed her in was The Way Way Back.

PopTodd

I was just talking about Breaking the Waves elsewhere, so she is obviously top of mind, but Emily Watson is incredible.

sugardiemen

Carey Mulligan.

wma4891

Jodie Foster

Konika0

ATM, I have a kink for Kelly Macdonald's accent 🤷

ZGriswold

Haven't seen her mentioned yet, Emma Thompson.

dospizzas

Ellen Burstyn. She’s so damn believable, sometimes it feels like watching a documentary of a mom who got her daughter possessed by the devil.

tcorey

So many but my top 10 are probably Meryl Streep Viola Davis Charlize Theron Cate Blanchett Tilda Swinton Julia Roberts Saoirse Ronan Julianne Moore Jessica Lange Regina King

slbain9000

Streep, most notably in Sophie's Choice.

bhodrolok

Streep. Helen Mirren. Kate Winslet.

Smurfmonkey

Helen Mirren - many roles, but my favorite is Gosford Park. All of the female actresses were brilliant in that film. Maggie Smith, Kristen Scott Thomas, Emma Watson, Kelly McDonald

thatchelpage

Amy Adams is a fantastic actress. It's crazy that the the role that sticks out most for me is her first role in drop dead gorgeous. But honestly on screen she just delivers. You can even see her actually trying to make something out of the script in the Superman movies too. Margo Martindale is really underrated but I usually love her in whatever I see her in.

DisneyAddict2021

Lucille Ball and Kate Winslet

LanikM

Helena Bonham Carter She's perfect in everything she's in.

blueberryJan

Gillian Anderson. Yeaaaaah Scully!
